How to make wifi better - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
This last weekend I rooted and installed different roms to try. Most of them still have poor wifi performance, just like stock.
Is there a way to make wifi better? Maybe flashing a new kernel, a new modem or something?
Thanks.

Modems/Radios are meant for Service network provider thingies, like your signal. Whereas, Kernels are for more "internal" things, they affect battery life and WIFI.
so i suggest you flash a custom kernel that best suits you
I hope this helps!

Thanks!
I was thinking of trying siyah kernel. Is it the best one for Wi-Fi performance or is there another one better?

If you're on ICS, Siyah and Franco both worked well for me, if you're on JB, Siyah alpha/beta builds are the only option until the i9300 sources are released.

Despite Siyah is on beta build for jb, it's very stable...

I cant quite tell cause it's a matter of how you set it.. but imo, siyah is the bomb

I flashed siyah 1.5.3 with CM10 teamasek rom but wifi still doesnt work. I dont options for wifi inside Stweaks.
I will keep trying with other roms.
What I want is the best combo for the best wifi performance. Best combo rom - kernel - whatever. I really need to improve my wifi performance at home.

What Kernel do you prefer?

After trying a few, which kernel do you prefer and run as your normal kernel?
For me, I have to stick with Entropy's Daily Driver kernel. Its just rock solid for me and its nice to know that we have a dedicated kernel dev who is always looking to better his kernel and when there were some problems he went through his whole patch-a-day to try and pinpoint the issues and resolve them. My hats off to him.

Im with you. EDD is my fav.
they are both extremely solid. I slightly prefer Siyah only because I tend to get better battery life when combined with the "init.doh" scripts
+1 for Entropy... been rock in for weeks now with zero issues and great battery life. I am so excited to see what he has in store for us now that we have ics source.

Weren't all these threads nuked before?
Entropy always, but if I wanted something experimental I tried Siyah.

We dont do "POST THE BEST ROM" threads. This is a poll to see what people run.
I am using Entropy and it has been rock solid. No freezes or anything. For me with Siyah I would have multiple lockups throughout the day that I had to reboot to get past. Granted I was using Siyah on cm7 though as that may make a difference.

The recovery menus with the siyah kernal are much more compact. It's annoying have to scroll through all the -NO- options when trying to flash something. Don't have to go through all that when you have the siyah kernel.

[Q] Slow H+

I recently installed Omega V8.0 on my Galaxy SIII. Previously I had good H+ connection with stock ROM (Telenor Branded, with Telenor CSC). But after rooting and Custom ROM, my connection is getting pretty slow.
Should i try to flash Nordic or Telenor CSC? Will it improve my H+ connection?
Current
AP: I9300XXBLFB
CP: I9,00XXLFB
CSC: I9300EURBLFB
Any help is mutch appreciated. :good:
Your CSC doesn't change the speed, the modem does.
You can try flashing your old modem again, or try out other modems until you've found a satisfactory one.
Note that the faster/more stable modems always drain more battery.
I prefer it that way though, what good is an expensive phone to me if it's slow but can stay alive > 24 hours?
Thanks man, that clarifies a lot for me. Should I leave CSC as it is?
Gonna try out new modems when I get back home.

You should check if you can still do voice calls... People have been experiencing problems with this update and mixing modems with it.

You are so right, had issue with voice calls. Flashed back to I9300XXLFB, and no problems with voice call. However I feel that 3G has somehow improved
Anyway thanks,
PS I need some thanks to climb XDA ranks

Yeah only the XXLFB modem works with the XXLFB rom for now :S I found my H+ wasn't amazing, but H works awesome? I would have thought H+ should be faster than H?
I am having another issue, ill just post it here. I recently flashed Omega V9.0. But when i try to flash "Extended Power menu.zip" or "Home button lag.zip", CWM says it's bad zip. Yes, i updated Omega Files to V1.05
Any suggestions?

H+ is a newer version/revision of HSPA. There can be multiple reasons why it's slower for you:
- the HSPA+ capable antenna is probably overloaded
- you have a better signal with the antenna running the old revision
CWM says it's bad zip.

Re-Download the files. They are probably broken.

I am experiencing slightly glitchy animations with TW launcher. Will flashing another kernel improve this?
I prefer smoothness above all like battery and performance.
Can someone recommend a custom kernel? I am currently on latest Omega V9.0 and stock insecure kernel.

All I can say is I'm running siyah's latest kernel on Omega 9.0 and my phone's flying with excellent battery life and no visible lag.
Give siyah's kernel a try.

It's noteworthy that you should install the ExTweaks app (free) from Play Store. It allows you to tweak several parameters of the kernel either for performance or battery life. I always go with performance on all.
Stay clear from the overclocking parts of the CPU/GPU sections though, the phone is fast enough as-is even if some people seem to believe their (mostly SSD-related) lags are gone by overclocking. Placebo ftw
Thank you guys. I flashed Siyah, and I have no lag whatsoever. Battery is okay too. I downloaded ex tweaks, but I didn't bother to alter settings, as I don't see why I should yet.
Should I just leave them on default?

s3 can take a lot of uv, i have undervolted cpu by 75mv and gpu by 50mv and have no issues, phone runs cooler too, try uv in stages, 25, Then 50, then 75 You just have to change the audio as this makes a massive diffetence

Preferred CM9 ROMS?

Not to start a controversy...but I just wanted to get an idea of what people are using and how they are enjoying their CM9 roms.

You mean what ROM we are running?
I'm using (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ at the moment, it's been working pretty solid for me.
You really can't go wrong trying out the various latest builds, Gray's is pure CM9 with no tweaks added, the rest have various things added/modified/removed.
Best way is to try them out, as everyone is going to have different opinions.
The builds are all pretty much the same, just small tweaks here and there, but Snuzzo's kernel is a beast, so Rage is the winner for me at the moment.
Rage all the way
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Neo's Rage is awesome the inverted gapps are sick.
I prefer plain CM9, so I'm using Gray's ROM. Replaced the kernel with the Super Charge kernel though
Maybe this is a good place to ask: I'm running Gray's 9/21 CM9 build, does Snuzzo's kernel work with it? I'd like to give that Wheatley governor a try.
Which phone are we talking about here? Cm9 and kernels aren't universal right? Still learning.

Yea, I just went back to it because of stability problems with AOKP. Snuzzo's kernel works great with it. Screen-off battery life is crazy on Wheatley.

Try this one, you'll get the best battery life anyone on here has ever had. I promise.
I use dorimanx kernel 7.11 + slimbean 2.8
In my case the battery lasts longer and it's stable and heavily customizable :good:

Seems all of them are the best. Gonna flash them all together.
The absolute best battery you can get is with Kernels that have MMC_CAP_ERASE enabled.Trust me. It might take you a while to find one but when you do, woah. Be sure to do a few data wipes after you've flashed the said kernel to get the most optimal battery life. I promise you it works, I did that and haven't needed to charge my phone for over a month now.

I would love to encourage Samsung to install this lovely kernel to all it's android line-up so we all can get benefit of life time battery life
Hi Guys,
I'm a new member so I cannot post in the Development Thread of the Super Nexus 2.0 ROM for the Galaxy S2 GT - I9100.
Galaxy S2's battery life is horrible as experienced by most people and I am no exception. So I was looking for a Good ROM with best battery life.
My search ended with Super Nexus 2.0 ROM. Its a very good and stable ROM. But its been almost a month since i installed the ROM but the battery life is almost the same as the Stock ROM. Tried some battery saver apps, but not satisfied. I would not like to change the ROM as its brilliant expect the battery life. So thinking of changing the kernel (Never done that before), so what do you guys think which Kernel is the best for Super Nexus 2.0 ROM and Battery Life.
Thanks.

What do you mean "not working for you"?? There's an AOSP kernel by Gustavo_s as well, but I don't know if it's been updated for 4.3 yet. That's pretty much your options AFAIK. I use Dori & it works great. So what issues are you having? A kernel doesn't just "not work".
