I'm not new to Android or the Galaxy family - this is my fourth Android phone, and I'm most recently coming from the Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy SII) which has the same camera [hardware-wise] as this phone... and software wise I'd expect similar if not some improvements, given this is the next version of that phone line.
I've only had this phone a few weeks, so I'm hoping there's a setting that I'm not aware of to relieve this: the autofocus is painfully slow. Much slower than the E4GT (GSII) Why?
I was at a wedding yesterday, and missed about HALF my shots, because after pressing the shutter button, it took I'd say between 2 and 3 seconds for the camera to autofocus and finally take the picture. And - half of the time, they didn't even autofocus right, the pictures ended up blurry.
I've also observed this in the past just taking random snapshots on this phone - it didn't become such a concern until I found myself at an important event like this wedding. I can't have a camera that's completely unreliable and impossibly slow.
I didn't have this problem with the E4GT, that camera performance was absolutely beautiful. I showed off the detail of the pictures I took to my family who was taking pictures with "real" cameras. This doesn't even compare - my old HTC G1 had a faster autofocus and shutter.
What's the deal here?

I'd say you have a faulty camera? I've taken hundreds of pictures with mine, with absolutely no auto-focusing issues. It's blazing fast. If you know someone else with a GS3, try a comparison, if yours is struggling while the other one takes pictures with ease, then you have your answer. On the other hand, a software update might fix the issues. Jelly Bean should be out soon for the S3, see if that does the trick.
Which ROM/Kernel/app were u using when u took the photos?
If u used the stock ROM, it should be super fast...

It's only occasional. Sometimes I snap a pic and it's fast. But I never had such delays on my E4GT...

Don't waste your time and take it to the Service Center if you re clueless.

Sounds like you are clueless. I don't appreciate that comment. And honestly, what kind of fool snap-reacts and exchanges his fully-configured phone on instinct? That's the definition of clueless. Wow.
If you tap the shutter button, yes - instant - because it skips focusing entirely.
But if you hold the shutter button down and release to take the picture, it's not instant. It's not instant when you release - it finishes focusing, THEN captures the picture. And if there's any motion of the camera (like trying to capture the bride/from walking into the reception), if anything else comes into the focus box momentarily, it seems to restart focusing again.
Even if you don't do that - if you try to whip your phone out, unlock it, open the camera, and point it at something - it initially auto-focuses on its own. It's a nice feature, but that box doesn't go green instantly - far from it.
This is a software difference, not a defect, compared to the GSII.
Yes, focus is important.
There's clue #1 for you do you don't ruin important photos.

Sounds faulty. Tested one in the shop the other day and it worked superb.
You could try changing the focus mode to macro maybe or by a sony xperia s I hear the phone has a dedicated camera button and is 12 mp. If you want the phone to be a camera sony maybe better.
On my s2 the focus is slow like you said but I use fixed focus mode in a custom rom and just touch the screen then snap away.

Yeah sounds like you are in macro mode, usually takes a long time and at the end it doesn't focus the object but does take the picture regardless of focus, It has happened to me too many times now... if you are on auto then there might be a problem, and HARDWARE wise this camera module is not the same as any other android in the market.. you can say it's the same as the iphone 4s but not GS2 or whatever other phone out there with 8mpix camera.

I've recently purchased a Motorola Atrix and was very happy with it, until once upon a time, I came to take a picture and a lot of click / pop sound sounds were emitted from the mobile.
I was a bit scared and immediately opened the back cover to see if it was the battery, but to my surprise it was the camera clicking noise.
The phone was taking pictures fine for the first week and although I noticed some noise, I knew that this was normal as stated in this forum as well.
After that, clicking noise, the camera is not focusing well while taking a picture. It's kinda stuck on Macro and can't focus on distant objects / scenes.
P.S. I 've also tried to keep pressing the shutter button to focus. The square comes green and the image is blurred. So yes, i know how to use the camera.
The preset is not in Macro Mode, I've tried Auto, Landscape, everything I could.
Picture quality also deteriorated. I've tried restarting the mobile, pulling out the battery and clearing the camera cache from the applications. I've also tried a HARD RESET but still the same crappy photos =[ video is also kinda strange as well... And at night, the camera is horrible...
Do you think this is a software or hardware problem?
My Atrix is still stock and it came with Gingerbread 2.3.4

Maybe try to install MIUI camera from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244829 and try to take some pictures. If they are blurry too then it is hardware. If not then software. Either way I would seriously consider returning it for repair or replacement if you can.
So I just download that and install it? Does it need CFW? or? Thanks!
P.S. I've just tried that camera from MIUI, and still the same problem, I think it must be a hardware problem :/

I thought I bought a good phone. Guess I hv to return it ;/ Any thoughts if I keep the same phone model or get a replacement with an Lg Optimus 2x? It has an 8mp camera with full hd support and hdmi mirroring out of d box. The only drawback 512mb of ram instead of 1gb and less resolution on screen although lg has an ips display.
P.s. would you recommend any other model with same specs? I would love to get an htc but they're expensive :/.

I would personally get another Atrix, unless I could get one of the new 720p display phones like the Galaxy Nexus or Razr Maxx. The camera and screen on the Atrix aren't the greatest, but overall I think this is a pretty solid phone. I haven't had hands on experience with many other phones though either.
Hmm I see, though if you would opt between an HTC Sensation and the Motorola Atrix, which one would you rather go for as solid OS and performance as well as the durability of the phone?
I also had a pretty bad experience with the Motorola Defy, constant lags and so on on the stock Rom, though it was a really tough phone. Seems Motorola engineers don't quite optimise the OS for the handset ;/ Some also say the camera of the Atrix is able to take better photos but due to the lack of software support it's kind of choppy.
As far as CFW I know a bit or two but am a bit afraid since you void the warranty... And not certain whether you can re-install the original one. Say the screen goes, you now have a jacket potato in your hand haha

I've used all of the image settings, Auto, Portrait etc, and I'm sure I know how to use a mobile camera as I also have an SLR camera.
I also keep touching the shutter button so that it automatically focuses, I've even moved the focus point and tried using the autofocus by keeping pressing the shutter button. Same result unfortunately ;/
Try downloading another camera app off the market, anything at all will do and see if the problem persists. If it does then it may be worth sending it in with a broken camera. My camera makes the odd whirr when it focuses but no clicks or pops.

Yeah, I have the exact same issue on my Bell Atrix 4G that I bought used a while ago. Was working fine until recently.
Here's what I found, I tried the MIUI camera, and whenever you tap the screen it is supposed to turn on the LED and focus the camera.
First off It didn't work, then I smacked the phone against my leg, and after that it started working, definitely flaky hardware in the camera.
This and the flaky SD card trigger are both issues I would definitely be contacting Motorola about if my phone was under warranty.
Overall the phone is pretty solid, and running CM 7.2.0 RC3 has made me very happy with the phone again.
Oh well, maybe just have to put up with it until I get the Samsung Galaxy SIII.
yep, it actually was stuck, got it refunded as I am planning on getting the One S or something like that, since the Galaxy S 3 or One X would be too big and I wouldn't want to drop such phones ;/
I might try ordering a replacement camera off the internet since the Atrix 4G is supposedly one of the easiest phones to fix yourself.

okay so ever since i got the LTE EVO iv been seeing people take AMAZING close up pictures of bugs/insects that are in FOCUS!

Ill find a bug outside and take out my LTE evo, open up the camera app and put the macro on "close up" and i can NEVER get it to atuo focus/touch focus good enough to see that its even a bug!

I've been using "Depth of Field" effect for close ups and I've been getting some really good results.
I've had inconsistent results with up close pictures.
I agree that indoor pictures are bad on the auto mode.

From the Camera app, it is the blue semi-transparent button above the camera shutter button. That gives you different options for effects when taking pictures (and video also if I'm not mistaken)
Make sure you're in close up mode. Hit the A and scroll down to close up it's near the bottom.

that actually makes it even worse. it does focus on anything close up.
Close up work for me, i was probably less than an inch from the keyboard in this photo. Are you half pressing the shutter button or pressing on the screen to focus the image?

You press it halfway and it will focus, press it down all the way and it snaps a shot. You can also focus by pressing on the object in the frame on the screen, it will actually make a noise when you do that.

Umm, the OP mentions using the mode in the 1st post.
It works perfectly for me as well but clearly not for him.
Hence a possible bug in the camera application. Just because is fine for us doesn't mean its fine across the board.

It's unfair for people to immediately blame the camera, but by the same token, it's unfair for you to claim it's simply user error. There's a degree of subjectivity (not sure if that's even a word LOL) that needs to be taken into consideration when talking about camera and picture quality.
With that being said, my personal opinion is is that the camera software on this phone is certainly flawed. It's good, but it can be better in so many ways. The camera itself is very very good. Tons of potential there, but the software is holding it back.
As for my personal experience when I had this phone, it consistently takes very good outdoor shots, but was very hit or miss when it came to indoor, lowish light shots. I have 2 pictures that was able to find that illustrate my concern. I think the problem is with the AUTO settings. Manually changing settings prior to taking the shot will produce better pictures, but it's a bit impractical to expect that (EVEN from a phone). In regards to the physical camera button, maybe my phone was defective because the first step of the button did absolutely nothing. I was told it's supposed to SEEM like it does nothing, but that it's actually auto-focusing. In my experience, that wasn't the case. The auto-focus usually happens automatically (kind of like the iPhone 4S) center-weighted, unless you use tap-to-focus. Pressing the button didn't refocus anything. In fact, it didn't seem to do anything AT ALL. Again, my phone may have just been defective. Going to make sure to try this again when I get another one in my hands.
I'm adding a few pictures. The one of the boxes and of the notebook is a prime example of the kind of shots I would get when shooting AUTO in indoor and low-light conditions. As you can see, the shots are terrible. For some reason the camera is maxing the ISO (among other things) so they came out extremely grainy. They are perfectly focused, the image simply isn't optimized. The keyboard picture shows a much better shot. In this shot the camera did a better job of optimizing under AUTO settings. It also maxed the ISO, yet it still produced a good looking shot. This one had better light, as you can see.
Overall my grade of the camera was an 8/10, and only because of the software limitations. As a reference, I also give the Samsung Galaxy S II an 8/10. On that phone the camera itself isn't as good, but the software (or maybe just the capture algorithm) is significantly better when shooting in AUTO.
Just my 2 cents.

Um, no it doesn't.
Press it down half way to lock focus and exposure, not to command a focus.
The camera is constantly focusing. Half-pressing the shutter button only maintains the focus at the time it was pressed.

Your hardware button isn't defective. It's programmed to lock focus and exposure settings instead of manually focusing.
Unbelievable how slow this camera is...
Makes it almost unusable, especially with moving objects.

This camera has literally made me want to throw the phone against a wall.
What makes it worst is the results are the same with every camera application.
It has to be hardware.

Taking pictures of moving objects is painful to say the least. It makes you wonder how they were able to get those pictures on their commercial...
I would of thought with optical stabilization that moving objects picture taking would be improved.

Optical Stabilization has nothing to do with that. It has to do with "shake" caused by handholding the camera. OIS has nothing to do with moving objects. That's shutter speed.

I would say the slowness of the camera is my biggest/only? gripe of the entire phone. This should get fixed soon, but we need to put the word out to them that this is a major concern of its users.
Taking pictures of the kids is ridiculously hard!!!! I have to put it on time shot so it takes multiple shots
TL;DR: A cellphone camera is a lot less flexible than a dedicated camera. If a scene is extremely well lit (read: direct sunlight), a cameraphone should be able to freeze frame, such as that soccer photo that was posted above, but if it's not well lit and/or the camera is biased towards slow shutter speeds, good luck. Gotta use the right tool for the job, and a cellphone isn't it.
Here comes the long version:
To create a picture, a specific amount of light is needed - too little, and you're underexposed, everything is too dark, too much, everything is over exposed; white. There's two primary factors controlling light taken in: Aperture (amount of light let in) and shutter speed (how much light is collected). Imagine filling a cup: aperture is how much you open the tap, and shutter speed is how long you keep it open. However, there's an additional factor: sensor sensitivity (ISO), which is a multiplication factor, but introduces noise when used. Think of measuring rainfall with a big bucket or a small glass. The glass will give you a ballpark figure, but the bucket will be much more accurate.
However, in all cell phones, the aperture is fixed, leaving only iso and shutter speed to be adjusted, and in most cell phones the max ISO is low due to the abysmal noise performance of these tiny sensors. In the case of the G2, it only has 4 stops of adjustment in ISO, where most compact cameras can manage 6 (iso 100-3200) and DSLRS can manage 8 or more. And, you really don't want to be using the last 2 stops if you can at all help it.
Problem is, the shutter speed can only go so low until hand shake becomes an issue. The whole point of image stabilization is to allow slower shutter speeds than could normally be used, with the ancillary benefit of less shaky video. Slower shutter speeds mean a lower ISO can be used, which results in better image quality. IS is one of the big selling points of this phone, so it's not a surprise they've decided to make it heavily favor its usage to increase image quality.
But, for moving stuff, you want fast shutter speeds.... with a bias towards slow shutter speeds, well, there's your problem. Sometimes there is a sports mode which will change the bias towards faster shutter speeds, but the G2's doesn't seem to do that (or it doesn't help much). I'd say, set ISO to max (800) and pray.
Or, if you are talking about focusing on a moving subject, either tap on something on the right plane as the moving subject, and take the picture when the subject is in the right spot. In the case of the G2, you have another option, which is to use manual focus. Either works.
Wow, the entire time I thought my camera was defective. The commercial makes a point of shooting pictures while the subject is moving and getting a still shot. In real life with this phone it's pretty impossible.
For most part the G2's camera has been fine for me but I usually don't take moving pictures with my cell phone camera.
It's true. I hope LG addresses this issue so long as it is a software defect. I'm concerned that it could be a hardware limitation though. capturing moving subjects is near impossible even in good lighting. However, the camera app opens fast enough, faster than SOME other devices. The shutter speed also gives the impression that it is faster than the nexus or moto camera. Galaxy devices are faster and then iOS has fastest shutter speed.
As for still subjects or scenes, this phone has arguably the best camera on any android device. In some instances, it is better than the iphone 5s, in others it is not. Low light shots are heavily softened yet the shot is brighter than any other camera I've seen. The smartphone camera that beats all of them is of course the lumia 1020, which many HAVE also complained to be slow.
Well I have a 9 month old and this thing doesn't miss a beat. I do however have that auto intelligence on and that snap is instant.

Zigzag is point on. This is cell phone camera. I find it to be one of the best overall in that area. Every cell phone I have owned has had one weakness or the other. If you need quality pictures of moving objects then you need dslr. Or, snap a bunch and take the best one.

The camera drives me nuts as well. Every time I read about it someone chimes in saying "well its a cellphone camera" but I have had more cellphones than most people and never had such trouble taking pictures of my son/nephew/nice, etc. To get a child to stand still for a picture is tough and sometimes it takes up to 7 seconds (I've counted) to take the picture. That's an eternity as a parent. I love everything about this phone except that aspect of the camera and the fact that Verizon doesn't offer it in white, which I'm hoping is fixed tomorrow. From there I just have to hope LG has an update for this. I don't care about the science of taking pictures, how it let's in light, I don't care if they have little Indonesian kids working in a little micro-sweat shop drawing pictures. It takes way too long to take a picture in anything but perfect sunny daylight, and thats not because it's a cellphone camera, that's comparing it to many other cellphone cameras.

I wasn't saying it drives me nuts... I was saying I don't have an issue with the camera... my son is crawling now and becoming more playful everyday. I don't have any issue with the camera. It does a great capturing him moving around. Not sure what some of you guys are going through because what I use it for it does an awesome job......

It takes way too long to take a picture in anything but perfect sunny daylight, and thats not because it's a cellphone camera, that's comparing it to many other cellphone cameras.

I meant to quote the person on top of your post, not your post. The strangest part is that I had the phone for about a week and didn't notice any problem with the camera. I rooted it and still didn't even notice any issue. I uprooted back to stock so I could hopefully return it for a white one If it comes out in the next couple of days and it wasn't until that point I noticed it. I took many pictures the following days as I ended up in Great Wolf Lodge and took many unsuccessful pictures of the kids, but I wonder if it was working OK and then gave me a hard time after either rooting or unrooting or if it just took me a few days to get out of the honeymoon stage to realize it. I'm curious to see what happens if I do get the option to switch my phone in the coming days, if it'll still be a problem or not.
Didn't mean for such a long post, sorry. Just following the lead of the thread, "Blowing Off Steam."

I read somewhere (most likely on here) that the Optimus PRO had the same issue for a while with the slow shutter and was eventually fixed with a software upgrade. I never had LG before (mainly because it isn't a heavily supported brand, which is frustrating with this one as well) so I don't know how they've been in the past.

I have read others with your issue and then those like me with no issue. Could be bad batch ois in some of the phones.

Im asking for myself, as well as for others in the future.
the first photo I took after unboxing the phone was missed. horribly. the camera seems so slow. If compared to a note 5, iphone etc.
Using auto for settings. i figured itd be at least almost as fast as comparable flagship devices.
Can anyone provide a decent list of settings for those "gotta take it fast" settings?
I have no problem at all. Just open and the camera app and shoot.
Haven't had any problems here. I used it all weekend to take picture of fall leaves.
Only thing that was "slow" was opening it by way of the double press of the down volume button. Not as fast as I'd like between the press and the actual picture.
But just opening the camera from the icon (i have it on my second screen) was very fast! The actual picture taking is blazing fast too. It was especially appreciated when taking panoramic pictures. My note 2 is pretty slow for those.

Any way to make the camera app on the second screen when main screen is off? That would be awesome. Btw I didn't even think out putting camera on second screen. Thanks!
I have the camera on the second screen when the screen is off.
Screen off defaults to the date/time/battery display but swipe to the left and it's (sound) (wifi) (flashlight) (camera)
I don't remember setting it that way. I thought I was just by default...

I have problems with the camera on the LG V10 too. For stationary stuff it's fine, but my Note 4 was much faster to take a camera shot on auto, and the picture always looked much better, with much less noise and blur... I have a 3 year old. So he moves fast, and I don't want to carry my expensive camera with me everywhere. I really thought this would be at least as good as the Note 4 on auto but it isn't. I really love the LG v10 overall, and don't like the thought of losing the removable battery, SD memory expansion, the DAC, and other great stuff, by moving to a Note 5. But I'm just that disappointed in the camera. Anyone think I might have a defective phone? I mean I hit the camera button to take a picture, and it just lags. And the result is blurry more often than not.

I've had none of these problems that you speak of...You might try to exchange your device....sucks bro.
Make sure OIS is on.
Make sure it's saving picture to phone
This camera is not as fast as note 5 when it comes to shooting quickly. Auto focus is nice but remember note 5 had camera api running in the background constantly so it's easy to open camera and snap.
It seems to have a slight lag with focusing in auto mode, especially compared to note 5.
I use it mainly for manual shots, but I also have note 5 too.
V10 has many more camera and video options than note 5, but is slightly slower
I have no problems with the camera at all.. Its fast and amazing. I came from a note 4 that became very slow after a half a year. N4 took 20 sec just for the camera to get in focus after opening the app. V10 Manual mode is the shiiz

I agree with you on this. I was debating on the note 5 and this. i love the big screen and removable battery and sd card and the storage is awesome but the camera pictures really disappointment. very much noise and blurry on the ends. like it just focus on the middle. Im thinking of returning it but i don't want to loose the whole other features..

I agree have the same problem. I wa sdebating on the note 5 and this but I love the whole big phone, storage and memory so I went with this. but since I am in the 14 day trial period I want to return it and get the note 5. just yesterday i took pictures and it took for over to take so when people saw the first flash they assumed it took and moved and yeah not good. IS there a setting or something?

I come to you today a little sad and depressed. I live in Pittsburgh and its blue skies here today, 73 degrees.
Naturally I'm out and about taking pictures.
Quick background, I love cameras. Love the S6 active, but there were times I wish I had more manual settings ( all the time).
Enter the LG V10. Loved the presentation, advertisements, heck I love manual video mode. But I'm a little disturbed by the quality.
I'm one of those people that zoom in, not necessarily to critique but to enjoy the delicacies that my eye cannot normally see.
Day1 of the LG V10, I dropped some money and bought it.
Was a little curious why after I take a picture whether it's in manual or auto mode I have to wait a second until I take another picture. This is 2015, almost 2016. Not 2012.
Also, the compression LG uses on this is...to say the least, disappointing. I'm talking picture mode. I zoom in just once and its distorted, blended, blurred. Why, LG, why?
This is LG's chance to shine. Not with the processor gpu or RAM, but with the camera and Video.
I'm considering fresh installing and master resetting this just to see if the camera is any better after complete reinstall. Has anybody had any success? I'm...seriously disappointed. Not a Samsung fanboy but when I see greatness I appreciate it. I know Samsung will copy this on next flagship, more manual camera and Video settings but this is now, I want a great camera that can compete with the big boys with that f1.8.
Any suggestions? I don't want to take this back but on a beautiful day like today, these pictures should be turning out amazing. Sad That the RAW image is crap too. ?

Hate to say this, but sound like you are whining to me. Though I am not a camera savey individual...so I can't fully say. The camera...I can tolerate one second for anything. If I wanted true manual camera, I will buy a camera...a real one.
You could try factoring reset to see if that will change your perspective. Also you can return to the store and play with their store demo and see whats up.

Thanks. I honestly want to hear what other people say. I can wait too, but the point is not to wait with these processors. Snap snap snap. Just was curious about how other individuals felt, not the reviewers who honestly almost never know what they are doing or have another objective in mind.

Yes, that's not what I'm referring to, however. From the time you take a picture to the time it takes to take the next picture, there is a delay.
That being said, there must have been something wrong while taking pictures outside yesterday. Not sure what but pictures are a little better today for another wonderful clear blue skies and 73 degrees.
Btw it appears to be an autofocus issue. I'll press button and it will take photo but won't allow me to take another photo for over a second. Same on G4. Tried it in Best Buy last night then the S6. S6 can repeatedly take shot almost instantaneously after you take last shot. I'm still not sure why there is such a delay.
Is this happening for everybody? I keep reading in posts that everyone who loves this phone the camera is "fast" and I'm not sure what they are referring to?
In AUTO mode I think it has a lot to do with HDR. If you turn that off, it'll be much faster. I'm not exactly sure how much will you lose in quality though...
But in Manual mode, it's quite fast for me. I can basically take the next picture instantenously. It doesn't have that lag that it has in Auto mode with HDR on.
After I read this I tested again to see how quickly mine takes shots and the details. I've not done too much with the camera as of yet.
The results :
In Auto mode with HDR auto it fires off pics as quickly as I can press the button.
In simple mode there is a slight delay because when I touch the screen it wants to focus then snap the pic.
There is a little bit of grain upon zooming in with both modes which I've not noticed before. Seems like a little much for a 16mp shooter and I don't think it was that much on my G3. I think for what it is though it is very solid. As some others have said if you want the most crisp detail for zooming an cropping you can't beat a true DSLR camera but I don't think you're sacrificing alot by using this for everyday point and shoot.

Youre definitely NOT whining! I believed the v10 camera hype and bought one two days ago. And i agree 100% with you that the camera is not great. I'll even go further and state that it sucks. The shutter delay is bad and the quality is muddy and noisy beyond words in low light. This clearly stands as my last big mistake of 2015!
I agree. The cams are absolutely not what they are hyped up to be. Especially the front cams. The selfie quality is just horrendous. Both cams are very noisy, terrible in low light, and blow out lights, lamps, etc. to an excessive amount. If I didn't get the phone on AT&T's Next plan.... it would be going back. The cam/vid hype was a huge decision in getting it & it doesn't live up to it.
The best thing to do is complain on both their Twitter & Facebook pages, although they are more responsive on Twitter. I would like to think a lot of these issues could be remedied with software updates for the cameras.
