wasnt really even a work around just a leaked bootloader and 0 bootloader protection. surprized the crap out of me that there was no bootloader protection so it could just be dd'd over the top of the exisiting one

Thanks for posting this

I added root in this Stock firmware for Odin .. Bootloader should be silent (I hope).. If you need busybox-install from Market.. let me know if this works?
Download

Looks like this had made it to some android sites

Any body flash it via Odin? I think it's impossible...
Modem original mast be 12,6MB, and this 47,5MB...
flash will fail...
needs to cut a blank space (zeros)...

This rom has multiwindow.jar and multiwindow.odex files inside /system/framework. If I'm not wrong those files were not present on XXALIE roms, so it could have multiwindow working...
Anyone want to try it and make a port for the SGS3? xD

Anyone with dev chops getting a vzw version and want to take a look into this dump that was graciously provided?!? Don't know if it's useful in its current form but at least it will provide somewhat of a head start. :fingers-crossed:
Either way, bump to the top for vis.

Considering the fact that the bootloader on the Galaxy S III was cracked and unlocked I'm pretty sure if Verizon forces Samsung to lock the bootloader that the same method can happen and get the bootloader unlocked. Sure it probably took a month or so but the bootloader was still cracked.

Coming from a Rezound which you use a paperclip to short the board to achieve s-off, anything is possible. I am optimistic about the bootloader, and for some reason we don't get it, I will be mystified, and heartbroken. Have faith in XDA. Sorry for posting in the dev section with nothing important, thanks....

Usually I care a great deal about this stuff, but in reality, beyond rooting to remove junk, using any other AOSP rom rather defeats the purpose of all the features that are included, and ONLY included with the TW rom. Split window and the like are all TW only, which means I LOVE paranoid rom, but it is highly unlikely that could be simply ported over with an app.
Other than root to remove bloat, I'm freakin STOKED to be jumping to this phone over my GS3. Booya, can't wait!

I second the Booya!
After bloatware, the sprint versions seem to have around of 9gb ram left (give or take) which is enough for me. VZ may be more or less but if they have full multi-tasking features (which seems to look good) I'll be happy as a clam.

The bootloader wasn't cracked, an unlocked version was leaked. Big difference.

Since this is sporting JB, it should at least have the disable function for the bloatware apps. Out of sight, out of mind

Can anyone confirm that the software has NFC?

They were a tad quiet about that. So much for a press release or anything.
I feel sodomized now...
This is a load of legal BS, which is only to benefit one party (ASUS). I wonder if such one-sided contracts will even stand up in court...
Great news !!!!
This future certainly looks bright !!
Bring on the Roms etc.
unlocking success XD now booting up it only takes a few seconds...
Finally! I really hope this will kickstart development.
strange recovery... only had a look for a few seconds as there is a timecounter in the background, but there is an option to install linux , mnt usb? maybe with FS? and to wipe (I don't want to press the button). I think it checked up the internal storage for some special files, like bootloader in htc for the pd**.img
Basically this unlocker grabs the serial of the CPU, tells the Asus server... Gets back the necessary info to unlock, unlocks the device and leave a marker for warranty thrashing (It mentions some sort of flag), then reboots.
Edit:If anyone was wondering, the serial of the cpu would be independent of the device serial (In format 0245xxxxxxxxxxxx) is acquired from /proc/cpuinfo
Edit2:I believe the unlock server is mdm.asus.com via HTTPS, also I believe it uses the Android device ID as well.
More Info!!! Thanks
couldn't someone just make a app, that does all this, except tell the asus sever our cpu number?
that way they would still think we havent unlocked it?
this is great news, the only problem i see is not being able to recieve OTA anymore. i am sure a dev will figure out a way to get us unlocked primes a way to install/flash them.
This is good to know and I will be keeping an eye out for any results that the community has using it. However, I won't be downloading/installing the tool because my Prime has not been rooted or gone backwards with ICS versions. I want to go the official update route for awhile yet. This is just a personal preference. I have too much money tied up in this unit to void the warranty.

It's a challenge-response thing with the challenge built from the cpu serial and device id (or one of those, or more... Didn't take a close look). Only Asus and the person in possession of the device would know these.
Also they're not stupid enough to just let you throw unlock requests at them without recording them. (After all they do have to look up the keys to unlock the bootloader)
Also they're probably wiping the DRM keys on the device as well, so devs don't go extracting them after they've unlocked their bootloaders.

DD'ing blobs *should* work still, although YMMV.
nice! now let's hope for a good recovery and custom roms!
As much as I want to use this I'm not going too. Don't want to lose my warranty as I dont trust this device with the amount of problems that surround it so far. Also wont get OTA updates. Asus know how to screw over there buyers, should of been unlocked before release.
Hm, did anyone get fastboot to work? For me it stays for ever at the line "Starting Fastboot USB download protocol"

There is not really a usable recovery. Only the OTA one which just shows you an error once you start it. (Because there is no OTA file to apply)
Once booting with VOL_DOWN you can choose between a cold boot, wiping data or entering fastboot mode (which does not really seem to work for me)

[Q] Unlocked bootloader before upgrading firmware

Hello,
First thing I did when I got my phone before even playing with it was unlock the bootloader in fear I would not be able to later on (was so tempting to have the file and not actually unlock it, so i did). Afterwards I realized i did not run the OTA first and i am on firmware 1.26. I am seeing some blurbs here and there with people stating that in order to update the firmware you need to relock your bootloader and than do the OTA, it is not something that would get done by installing a new rom. I am new to HTC, had the nexus before this and everything could not have been easier. Just want to see if I am understanding this correctly, and would it be wise of me to relock my bootloader and than do the ota and than re unlock.
thanks for your help!

I'm fairly certain that isn't true. You just need to wait for someone to post the stock update "rom".
What is the most current firmware?
I did a software update and found nothing earlier today. I'm on 1.26.502.10
I remember seeing in the at&t forums that people were getting an OTA right off the bat, and in the international they have 1.29.401.12.. but maybe I am just being paranoid? I am on same firmware as you.
I'm not worried about it too much. I'm sure to have a custom ROM on this thing sooner rather than later.

I stand corrected. But the way I see it - if you unlocked the BL, you can back it up, then relock it, flash it, and then restore everything.

Why not flash a custom rom now from the international forum? Or just flash stock international rom?
Something in android revolution thread stated that if u have a different firmware version than what they are using u need to wipe data through aroma.. which i understand.. just was curious about running the most up to date firmware and such.. but if that's just for international. Than no biggie. Plan on flashing this afternoon!

After realizing how much confusion there is about root and customizations for our precious Z Ultra. I decided to remain on stock ROM unrooted. Itś annoying for sure not having root permissions of my own device but I rather stay on square stock than scary shady root/rom. Just hoping to see some exploit that will give me a FULLY TRANSAPARENT root.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Finding an exploit is usually the first port of call for a new device. However every dev on here and the Z1 forum has already rooted and installed recovery. So there is no need for them to work out another method of rooting.
Even though tools like 'vRoot' are possibly suspect, 90% of people have used this method, and if its bad, then we can not do anything about it.
-For those that don't want to use that tool, and never have... then you may never have root access..
-For those that have used the vRoot tool or a similar app, and now have 'unrooted' to try and be safe... ... well there is no real point in that. Once rooted, if they have your info... then they have it. Can't be taken away.
What I think... is that they have not stored our information.... that it was only read.
There is no real reason to store IMEI numbers. Nothing can be gained unless they want to release fake Sony Xperia Z Ultras, with our IMEI numbers. and considering the Ultra and Z1 its a specific device for a specific purpose... it doesn't make sense.
For a Samsung S4... i could understand..

Thanks for your post on this matter. Why would they provide an unlock bootloader tool for the Deluxe model and not the Ultra? That frustrates me just a little, as an owner of this Phablet. I purchased the Asus Utra for it's small tablet qualities and even though I enjoy using it the way it is now, I would like to get more out of it, by rooting it.
Has anyone tried the www.kidapso.com AutoRoot tools to unlock the Ultra Bootloader, as they claim it does?

This claims to be able to root (without unlocking bootloader) through Super-Root:
http://www.how-to-root.stream/2016/09/asus-zenfone-3-ultra-zu680kl-8130.html
Don't have the device, so can't try.
As far as my outdated knowledge goes, root with locked bootloader is possible, but install custom recovery isn't, but with root you can at least use TB and an adblocker.
Can anyone confirm that this works? Will it stop OTA updates? Would you be able to install Xposed?

Thank you for your post. But as for me, Since you can do more with the bootloader being unlocked, I will be patient awhile longer to see what happens with this issue on the Asus Ultra....
As a side note many of the sites that claim to have unlocked bootloader and/or root for the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra, you have to jump thru hoops to get to the actual site. For instance the kidapso.com site you have to fill out your information for receiving some product of various types, whether signing up for a gift card or something else. Then you actually have to agree to giving up your privacy by agreeing to allowing multiple vendors contact you by phone(in small print), even if you are on a national registry not to be contacted by sales persons or ads before you are even allowed to the site that supplies the actual info for unlocking the bootloader. So I don't even know if the information is legit, because I'm personally not going to agree to the above. As mentioned, I will be patient awhile longer while waiting for more information on the subject of the unlocked bootloader for the Ultra
Sorry guys I meant to say the base model Zenfone 3 ze520kl, not the deluxe.
Kipaso is a fake site.

How do I root a Verizon Galaxy s4?

The videos in the sticky are incorrect or defunct. Many of the required files that these videos link to are broken links and the video near the top telling how to root a verizon s4 is false. The files this guy links to are blocked by Google Drive because they are "infected" according to Google Drive
I am not sure why XDA Developers are stickying videos with links to infected files. But there seems to be no other videos on rooting Galaxy s4 and I do not want to use KingRoot because it is potentially spyware.
I prefer something using TWRP and Odin.
So what is the real way of rooting an s4?
I am preparing to be passed an s4 myself... I've so far found some instructions, but will not try anything until I hold the device, of course... https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/jfltevzw/install
I hope I don't have to jump through too many hoops...
After a small amount of searching, it seems that if the phone ever took an ota upgrade, it will be impossible to bypass the locked boot loader... I've got my fingers crossed... But not too hopeful.

Use the "old method" if you don't want to use Kingroot. The application only had a 5 day trial, so just keep that in mind.
