[Q] Have to clear Cache/Dalvik everyday to keep Tab from running like molasses - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my tab for almost a year and I always have the same issue with every single ROM. When I flash a ROM everything works great for a few hours but by the end of the day it gets soooo slow. It gets so slow web browsing is next to impossible. Scrolling web pages becomes painfully slow and even the most basic functions such as screen unlock and other basic UI slowdowns are driving me nuts. If I use recovery to wipe the cache & Dalvik cache things speed up quite a bit, while a factory reset or re-flash bring it back to where it should be for a few hours. Regardless, it always ends up slowing back down. I've used everything from Stock HC and stock ICS, Task650 ICS and HC, to CM9 and CM10 (to include AOKP and other CM based builds) and a few others with CPU speeds everywhere from stock to 1.4GHZ. I've also tried every kernel I've found to no avail. It runs great right after a flash which is why I find it hard to believe that my issue is simply "the Tegra 2 just sucks". Anyone else have similar issues or any insight?

Is this slowdown also happening after factory reset with no additional apps installed? Could otherwise be one of your extra apps creating a memory/cache fragmentation. But if it happens on vanilla (i.e. no additional apps installed) it could be hardware?

I was going to ask the same thing as Just-another did. From my understanding the davlic cache is where the OS stores application loading information. read here for more details on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_(software) The davlic also stores this information to speed the boot up process. when you wipe it, the OS has to reload this information into it about each application during hte boot process (thats why new flashes and boots after the davlic wipe take forever. With the introduction of ICS, I personally noticed that the OS actually told you it was preparing applications whereas GB and Froyo didnt do this. I had tablet that wiped it out each boot. that sucked.
I would suggest looking at the regular caches or your apps to see if one is hogging processes. then again, I may be way off base.
edit: this is a good concise explanation.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7541281/what-is-dalvik-and-dalvik-cache

This may be a bit simplistic but have you tried just rebooting your device? Mine sometimes slows down to a crawl and this fixes it for me..

I agree with Pickupman66,
I would start from scratch again.. Process of elimination. A nice CM10 should do it.. But don't load new apps at all for the 1st day (don't fill in you google acount details). Leave it standard, and see how it behaves over a 24 hour period. Then slowly install apps.. install the most common and confident ones first, and leave time to make sure they're not hogging the system. Sooner or later, you'll find the one that causing the issues.

Mickey
And it also interested me sometimes and I tab slow but works ok after restar not like it when I reset the time lost as the speed of response ?
I have a Samsung galaxy tab P7500 4.0.4 stock room . !

[Q] Better Cache Management?

I find that when I flash my phone, with lets say the latest synergy, my phone will work amazingly well. Very snappy, with no lag. After a few days of use, no matter what Rom I'm on, the phone becomes less responsive, and i notice a much greater deal of lag and delays.
My phone is pretty active. It runs K9 Mail, and Touchdown Exchange. Both apps together most likely see nearly 250-500 e-mails a day. I have both set to delete mail more than 2 months old. You can see my other apps here: http://www.appbrain.com/user/DeMiNe0/apps-on-the-pg86100
I'm assuming the slowdown is caused by the numerous caches on the phone. If I clear my caches everything tends to speed back up for a few days. Is this normal for Android? I'm assuming it is(Atleast for HTC Devices), as I had this issue with my OG Evo too. Are there apps that will manage your cache so that this issue happens less often? It's just a pain having to dump my caches and then waiting 15-20 minutes for the phone to restart.

Out of curiosity, when you say clear your caches, what specifically are you referring to clearing? i.e. which directories?
There is definitely an issue with some android applications storing large amounts of data in their /data/data directories. Not sure there is any type of quota or limits on them either. I know I've seen the browser cache accumulate many files.
Also, in agreement and support to your observations with both the EVO and EVO 3D, HTC Sense doesn't seem to contain the most optimal code or procedures. I know when I ran CM7 (based off AOSP) on my EVO, the base OS was a lot smoother and quicker than the base HTC Sense.
As a possible solution, I think I've seen a few applications on the Market under the term wipe/clean/clear cache but I haven't tried any of them. I have thought about creating an application to fulfil this function but there seemed to be enough on the Market so I scratched the idea.
Always good to know somebody else has the same observations! Hope some of the feedback helps!

No effing way it should take that long to reboot. Are you on a custom ROM? Most of them boot in a minute or two. When you wipe in recovery the ONLY one you should wipe is cache, and NOT dalvik. Also, there are a few good root apps that wipe your app caches from the OS, no reboot required. Two come to mind - "cache cleaner" "cachemate". Try those, or wipe just cache in recovery not dalvik, should boot really fast.
Edit : the app "fast reboot" may help too, if it's just a bunch of open processes in your OS. It closes all of them and restarts them, without an actual reboot. You could also try a root app for memory management, like "autokiller", etc.

[Q] Statusbar is a bit laggy

Hey guys I need your help The problem is that when i scroll down the statusbar it seems a little bit laggy for me. Is that normal and could you check it out on your devices? And it's only laggy when I let it scroll down slowly.
DaGodfather
I've not experienced lag on the notification bar myself, but could you give us more info? What ROM are you on, and how can we reproduce the problem?
I am on Omega 10.4 with Phenomenal 4.0 kernel. I will try FOiL 1.4 soon..
It's more likely (nearly 100% likely) to be an issue with your current configuration (ROM & kernel), so a change of ROM will probably resolve the issue, or at least change it. If you want to be sure then the best bet is to flash one of the stock or lighter ICS ROMs.
I just changed the rom and it got much better thanks mate Just one more question. Could it be that after a kernel "settles" the device could become smoother. Because i flashed Phenomenal 4.0 a few hours ago.
maybe is your ROM ... I'm using latest sammy ICS XXLPB and the status bar scroll down is super fast
Hmm okay i will try it out. How is the batterylife?

There are things that will only happen after a wipe/reset, which I assume you did as part of the flash. I suppose if you had a lot of Google data syncing then it could slow your device down for a considerable amount of time. It depends if you use things like the Google backup/restore that automatically (when it feels like it) reinstalls your market apps, or if you've got a LOT of contacts. Also the usual suspects, like Facebook and Google+.
It'll obviously vary from device-to-device, depending on how you use it. Also, I always make sure to enable wifi (if available) as soon as possible after a flash, just to ensure that any syncing is as quick as possible and not eating into my data plan.
Hmm i wiped cache and dalvik cache before i flashed the kernel but after the flash i didn't do anything like that Hmm i guess i should free my device from all that crap. thanks again!!

[Q] A working rom?

I really hate to make this post, but I've had such bad luck in the recent days, that I'm at wits end and need a little help figuring out whats going wrong here. As of now, I am runing LiquidSmooth 2.9... But as with all my recent flashes, there are tons of problems. Currently my issues are: external SD card doesn't show, GPS doesn't lock on (which from what I read I need to install a working GPS rom, get a lock, then reflash.. ok cool) and lastly facebook and instagram are aggravatingly slow. I can have full service, even be on Wifi... text from posts will load fast... anything else... You're better off playing the lottery than hoping a quick picture will pull up.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong here, I throw the zip file on my phone, go into TWRP, wipe cache and dalvik, install, wipe again, factory reset, reboot, and then start using my phone...
With every rom I've tried there are issues from no gps, no camera, no keyboard, bluetooth cuts out... etc...
Is there a rom that works? Or are there steps I'm missing or a fix to my said issues? Any help would be great

Try flashing devil kernel from the Original Development section for your SD card woes. AOSP doesn't support exFAT by default (I'm guessing that's what your card is flashed as and is why you can't see it). This kernel adds support for exFAT to any AOSP ROM.
Try enabling Force GPU Rendering in the Development Options and see if that doesn't fix your slowness with Facebook and Instagram. I personally don't use Instagram but have had no issues with Facebook on CM10.2.
Finally, you already have the fix for your GPS issues, just need to bite the bullet and get it done. The good news is that as long as you stay on AOSP ROM's you shouldn't have to do it again.
Let me know if that does/doesn't work and we can try some different options, good luck!
Thank you the GPU thing seems to have worked, doesn't seem to lag as much anymore. However, the devil kernel didn't seem to do much other than replace TWRP
I'll take that back =S pics aren't loading again.

Devil kernel not recovery.
It is a kernel that will work on AOSP and TouchWiz ROMs, and in combination with the recovery allow you to dual boot one of each.
You do not want this, you want just the kernel.
ok so I've tired the devil kernel, no luck. I tried a couple different roms, no luck. Finally flashed with CleanRom3.5 and my SD card is back. But now the issue I'm experiencing is when I try and play music through spotify it randomly shuts down the audio channel. The music still plays according to the app, but I can't change songs. I can pause and hit play, but no audio. I have to force close the app, and I can then again listen to a song, maybe two before it happens again. Sometimes it happens within 2 minutes, either way I have not made through 2 consecutive songs. Any ideas on that?
try beans Jellybeans build 21.. no issues works great.
I have to be honest, I have had nothing but compatibility issues with the use of TWRP. I switched to CWM and I stopped having little glitches and hang ups in the Roms. I would give it a shot, not saying it is even the cure all but it worked for me as crazy as it sounds.

[Q] Everything keeps failing

So I was using the CM11 mod for my fascinate for about 2 months. The first 2 weeks of using it, it was awesome. After that, my RAM was going down for no reason, and i had some problems but i could fix it by optimizing my device.
A few days ago, my phone kept crashing. I kept on getting messages that Trebuchet had failed, Clock had failed, Play Store Services have failed, etc. Today morning, almost everything on my phone failed. It would just keep reloading the home page. I restarted my device several times, but after that nothing would really load.My battery had about 93% charge and i went to school. When it was 3rd period in school, my battery was 15%. I had no applications running. I just turned it off
When i got home, it would load but everything was slow. i optimized, cleared cache and everything but it wouldn't work. When i open an app, it takes a long time to load. The home screen, and menu pop us normally, but the apps are slow. I really dont know what to do and what ROM to move onto next. Im not getting a new phone for a while, and i really need help.
What ROM should i flash? I need something stable, that wont have problems like this. I also like to use Facebook a lot.
Please help me with my problem because i really want my phone to work. I bought the phone for $200 and it was a bad decision, since all these problems started occurring. What ROM would be the best for me?
@samsung striker
Wow, you have a lot going in there...
Hopefully when you say cm11, it's the version from unjust 06/04/14
That thing is ridiculously stable...
I'll start off with this, Facebook and any fb messenger apps are huge memory hogs.
Next, i saw you mention optimize several times, what program are you using to do that with?
The particular problem i see with the fascinate right now is browsing and using social media sites fill up the cache folder quickly. When that happens the phone well act like you have described.
You can easily fill the cache on one or two days depending on how heavily you browse.
At a minimum, what i think you need to do is boot into recovery and wipe cache and davlik.
Then reboot and let it rebuild things, if things don't smooth out within 15 minutes of booting up, go ahead and reboot again to see if it clears up.
It's very possible if you filled up the cache it probably tried to write information somewhere else and why it freaking out
I would recommend ever other day wiping cache from in recovery and you should be real safe with things and the ROM would be very stable.
If you have done that and are still having issues,,,
Or if you at ready to sacrifice losing your call history and text history and apps etc,,, Go ahead in recovery and do the factory reset,,, it will wipe your apps and stored data (not download items like music or zip files) & put everything back just like you did a fresh install of cm11, so you have to set up all your preferences and gapps and other apps you want all over again
.
Yea i use Facebook a lot. I like to download a lot of apps and most of the time it works fine, but sometimes these problems start to occur, followed by a lot of lag.
When i optimize my device, i optimize it with this program called "Smart Booster." I also use this other app called "Fast Reboot."
Anyways, ill try what you suggested and see if it works well. If it doesn't work out for me, do you have any other Rom's in mind that are better for me?
Thanks.
I had the same issue pop up a week or two ago. Cleared cache and Dalvik on a semi-regular basis (although I probably browse less than it sounds like you do) but it didn't do too much for me. Ended up on the most recent CM 10.1 nightly and only installed the apps I use regularly instead of my usual restore of every app that had a TiBu backup. It's been working great for me over the past week or so. Personally, I couldn't handle the data drops on CM 11 any longer either, so CM 10.1 has been a good solution on that front.

How did you go back to CM 10.1 Nightly? Did you just download and flash it? Im worried that somethings gonna happen since im going to JB from KK. I wanted to try the PAC man Rom.

Also, Can you please post the link for the CM 10.1 Nightly? i cant seem to find it.. Thanks
Grab the latest nightly from the CyanogenMod site - I PM'd you the link since I can't post them here.
I booted into recovery, wiped data/cache/dalvik and installed the zip. It failed, I rebooted back into recovery, and installed the zip again and it worked without a hitch. Very similar to flashing CM 11.

Yea thanks for the help
So i flashed it, and it was working pretty good. I downloaded a few apps such as Messenger, Kik, TB, Smart Lock, and Clash of clans. It was working well, until i used Facebook Messenger, which made it lag just a little. I used clash of clans, and it did lag a little so i had to get Smart Booster, and optimize.
I like to download a lot of apps so im not sure how my device would handle it, since im experiencing a little lag from these few apps. Did you download similar apps as me? Also, do you like to download a lot of apps? Im just asking just to see how well your Fascinate runs compared to mine.
Again, thanks for the help. My Fascinate runs better now
Im gonna try to get a custom kernel and see what happens.
I found that when I installed ALL of my apps that the phone would slow down significantly. I just have the essentials now - a few games, a few social apps, and some other items, well below what I had earlier. The Fassy didn't respond too well when I had a ton of apps on there, so I scaled back and it seems to be working a lot better for me. The single-core can only handle so much - hopefully Devil or another kernel will help you out if you need additional apps!

Yea that's the bad thing about the fascinate, and i don't think there are any kernels for Cm 10.1 because I searched online, and couldn't find anything.
Check out HHP's thread in the General section - plenty of JB kernels to choose from. I think Devil was the most widely liked from that group if I remember correctly.

[Q] Slow phone

Hi all,
This is my first post on the forum!
I have a XT910 bought in Nov 2011. The phone is from Asia Region. I faced the well known SMS issue on this device on Asia Retail 4.0.4. Initially there was no problem but later it just randomly started. Fed up I rooted the device and flashed the EU JB Official ROM from this forum. Later on I have since installed Cyanogenmod (using Safestrap and done a dual boot with my stock ROM intact). The problem I face these days is that the phone is too slow / sluggish / unresponsive at times and it really drives me crazy. The problem occurs usually when I open some heavy app like Chrome or do some "new" activity .. like a new app installed and configured etc. The thing is this slowness is visible in both the stock / cyanogen mod. I have been on CM10.2 to 12.1 now but the problem exists always. I have done multiple reflashes / formats for CM as well as factory resets for the stock ROM but the issue does eventually crop up after a few days. I have observed the following though using various tools:
1. RAM usage is almost touching 85%+ but rarely do I have less than 50MB of RAM left.
2. Processor also seems to be okay
3. The I/O on the disk is too high tough. Sometimes I have seen GB of data "written" just when opening a blank chrome window (using System Monitor Lite). I wonder if my on board flash memory is to blame? I also have an external class 10 16GB SD card, though removing this doesn't seem to give any performance boosts.
I have been facing this problem almost since I moved to the EU JB ROM about 1.5 yrs back, though I must say the Asia Retail ICS wasn't really fast either.
What are your opinions / troubleshooting hints that I can follow or do you think the phone is plain simple too old and really needs to be replaced?
Thanks.

Hello again guys..
100+ views but no replies!!!
Any help will be appreciated Thanks.
Installed the monitor. That monitor app reports estimated transfer speed not amount data transferred. I.e. installing chrome is done at about 790kb/s. Since I don't have the paid version I cannot see how much it takes to open chrome. At least you know that it is not heat forcing your processor to throttle.
Doing RSD can be a better approach. And then factory reset WITH internal sdcard deletion. Just in case you have bad file system.
You explain in the post that first rooted then installed EU ROM over an asian phone. I don't think it would have worked but if it did, maybe rom is not working well with your kernel. Do a Rsd or flash the corresponding kernel. Second choice have gave me troubles before, so be ready to rsd.
Minimal installation of gapps. Avoiding heavy launchers like aviate. Using .nomedia files to disable media search in certain folders.
Not messing with ad blockers or location services or permissions for a while. Also ohmster had an interesting post in cm11 thread about what he does to get a better experience.
