data issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I purchased an S 2 from AT&T a while back. I have sense let my plan run out and now bought a prepaid SIM card. the problem is is that now my data does not work because of the 4 G AT&T does not offer 4 G with a prepaid. there is hardly any 4 G coverage where I'm from anyways but I would at least like the 3G to work. is there a way that I can get it to work like flashing ROM or something. I'm not a total noob to this stuff I just hang out at android Forums because of my zte. thank you very much for any of your help.

If your SIM card doesnt allow it, then its not gonna be possible. No S/W can change that.
But if your SIM does allow 3g, then odds are you need proper APN settings. Google it if thats the case.

I would think that it would the 50 dollar monthly unlimited plan. from everything that I've read thus far I've got it narrowed down to something with the phone. I read about the apn settings once before and thought that that was it so I will definitely read more and do what needs to be done.thanks

By any chance are you using Straight Talk? You were vague about which prepaid service.
Straight Talk is supposed to offer an AT&T compatible sim that actually works off the AT&T network.

sorry about being so vague yes it is the AT&T prepaid service. I'm doing the apn settings as we speak so will see if they work.

I had the 50 dollar unlimited plan as well but it really is only for calling and texting. I still had to purchase a data plan and it was 25 dollars for one gig. After I got the data plan 4G started. You have to use the old cingular apn settings to get 4G but you cannot get 4G LTE on a prepaid plan. And just a heads up...when your prepaid needs to be renewed..4G data will shutdown for a few hours.

[Q] Possible to use Note i717 without data plan?

At&t has me buying a mandatory data plan(3gb) when I use about 300mb a month and that is because I purposely shut off wifi so I dont feel like a jackass for paying for something I do not use...
I have no need at all for data,I am always near a wifi spot,is there a way to make it seem like my smartphone is a dumbphone?
I have a bunch of att branded flip-phones laying around,is there a way to take the imei from of these and put it on the Note i717?
I'm sure if it is possible,it is complicated.Just wondering.
Thanks.
Buy a sim card for a dumbphone and put it in your smartphone
Sent from my MB855 running AT&T using xda app-developers app
I tried to do something similar.
I called At&t and told them that I wanted to use a flip phone and gave them the IMEI and everything,I used it for a few days and after I put it in an Atrix 2 I have. After 3 days I got a text saying they added a data plan for $20 to my account lol.
They can read the IMEI of the phone,if you call customer service, they can even tell you what sim is in what phone at that very moment.

I don't think that will work. I had that argument with at&t about not needing the data add-on for my sister-in-law's phone. She wanted the large screen for SMS and doesn't know the internet exists. I put an old 64k sim in the phone, and within the day the phone was cut off. After a call to at&t, they told me I need a data plan with the phone. They detect the type of phone.
Don't bring up the topic of phone cloning - its illegal and banned on xda, as it should be.
So it is "phone cloning"?
didnt know, thanks for the heads up.
I can understand making data mandatory on a subsidized phone but on one bought off contract,it is unfair.

Believe me, brother, I'm in 100% agreement with you, but it's at&t's tune we dance to.
I think i am just going to sell this Note i717 and get a Nexus 7 for my tablet needs and pick up a tmobile branded galaxy s or something else cheap.
Pick up a Roger's I717R Note if you want to stay with this phone. ATT can't recognize the phone and won't put you on a data plan.

That doesn't make sense. Sprint phones are CDMA not GSM. Sprint network doesn't use a sim card to register. In other words, no sprint phone on at&t network.

I've been using AT&T prepaid plan for a few years now, the GNote is my third phone with prepaid plan ($50/mo: unlimited calling, text, data{only for non-smart phones}) but I'm cool with that. So I don't see why you can't do the same.

To add to this comment. At&t will also know if you are using any smartphone from any network or assume its a smart phone I guess. My wife uses a galaxy s 4g exclusive to t-mobile for about 4 months now. Last week she was hit with the 3 gig addition as well. They dont even know what type of phone it is. All she did was turn on the data to download an sms and bam a day later she got the the email.

I switched and im not sure of the exact speed, but its pretty fast and I have no issues. However, I'm on a ATT Straight Talk sim, not a Tmobile sim. The ATT sims can only be purchased on ebay/amazon. The tombile sims can be purchased directly from straight talk. I'm in Charlotte NC. Give me a mobile testing site, and ill get you exact speed numbers. Only switch if you use less than 1.5gb a month in data. Otherwise your throttled.

Net10 is 1.5gb data too so no need to pay the crazy ebay prices for att st sim. Can get net10 for a buck
Get about 6-8 mps with st att sim in ne florida. Awesome voice coverage to boot!
So just to be clear, if I use a straight Talk Sim I would have to get my phone off contract with ATT?

Correct. As long as you use an ATT SIM from Straight Talk, you can port with no ETF. However if you leave straight talk before your actual ATT contract is up, you will be hit with an ETF.

B/c I did a lot of research and heard that throttling of data is wayyyyyyyy worse at Net10, which is why the Straight Talk sims are so pricey. If you are not a datahog, it is a goldmine.
I have a Straight Talk AT&T SIM for sell that I bought yesterday. Im willing to sell it for $30 and take a $10 hit.
After thinking it over I decided to stay with AT&T

The price is higher for the straight talk att Sims because you can't buy them anymore, not because they are better. Also a difference with net10 is that you can't port a number to net10 like you can straight talk

if there wasnt a demand then sellers couldnt get away with those prices. especially since net10 sims are so much cheaper and easier to come by. from my research, throttling on net10 is more prevalent and strict.

Yeah, I understand. I'm not an expert in switching handsets between CDMA carriers, but I do know it's not quite as simple as just flashing a ROM. If I'm not mistaken, it takes specialized hardware for reprogramming at a pretty low level.
Good luck, and maybe someone with more knowledge can enlighten us both.
You know you can use At&T prepaid mvno partners on your Verizon handset? I am currently using GoPhone's $60 month unlimited call/text & 2gb data with hspa+ speeds.
You can also use StraightTalk, Red Pocket, H20, & Net10, plus there might be some regional carriers in your area.

Root, Roms and Straight Talk

Any one knows if rooting and flashing roms will mess the service on a AT&T Mega(SGH-I527) flashed on Straight Talk?. if not, what rom would be the best one?.
Thanks.
Hello!!!, anyone?????????
there are no roms on the at&t version yet
The phone is not flashed to straight talk, it is neither unlocked. Your phone is most likely an AT&T version and straight talk uses AT&T towers so the phone will automatically run their network, no flashing networks.
To answer your question rooting your phone will be like rooting a regular AT&T phone as you have nothing flashed on it.

correct.. and Straight Talk, Walmart Family, Net 10 etc sim cards....
so.. no flashing neccessary...
only different APN settings needed.
Hopefully your Mega will automatically find the correct APN settings of the particular sim card that you put in before boot up..
If it doesn't work for any particular sim, then you'll have to find the APN settings and create one that will work with any given sim
good luck.

It's really working.
don't go over your 2.5gb data cap.
I always thought I was invincible to the cap because I had a iPhone 4 and the speed always seemed the same. Well I got my galaxy mega on monday and by wednesday I was at 4.1gb. It was because I had downloaded Asphalt 8 and a few more games using the incredibly surprisingly fast straight talk 4g. Well then my internet completely disappeared. I know straight talk had nothing to do with this. But my apn settings deleted itself. I don't know why haha. But anyway I called straight talk saying I couldn't find the correct apn setting they helped me get the correct one and then I asked her if she thought if I used to much it would go over ( I didn't want to say I went over) She then said oh wail actually you already have seemed to exceed the cap. She said I should experience slower data. She then proceeded to tell me that once the 2.5 gb cap is passed that the internet slows down to 2g? I asked her if it was edge and she said no 2g.
I plan on switching to simple mobile within the next two days.

What Straight Talk option... CDMA or GSM, the procedure is very different and of varying degree of difficulty...
CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) - need a donor ST phone, and clone the ESN/MEID, plus tweaks in the radio settings. Unlocked or S-OFF and root required, 3G data possible, no 4G
GSM (AT&T/T-Mobile) - Edge (2G, around ~220kb/s) data possible out of box with no changes to phone except change radio mode and add APN setting. 3G/4G possible on AT&T only with pretty in depth modification of radio settings and some prop.build file edits, this is still in the works for a walk-thru, this also would require an unlocked bootloader or S-OFF and root.

The method to move it to Straight Talk w/Verizon towers is the relatively the same as moving a Rezound to PagePlus, follow that tutorial except substitute a Straight Talk 3G smartphone (instead of a PP phone) as a donor and program the Rezound accordingly.
If AT&T has service in your area and you are not comfortable with the heavy modifications required to do that, I would recommend moving to GSM service... get a Straight Talk AT&T GSM SIM and go from there. AT&T is recommended over T-Mobile as the frequecies used for higher speed data on T-Mobile are not compatible with the Rezzy.
Why is it going to cost you $500 to get out of your current contract? Honestly, unless because of service coverage you are forced to Verizon, drop them completely... A good GSM smartphone with HSPA+ can be had for well under $150 used, a new Nexus 5 will set you back $350, and a Straight Talk/AIO Wireless/AT&T Go Phone SIM card will run you $45-$60 per month, saving $40-$60 per month, easily paying for the phone in a just a few months.
Well I'm getting off my parents line and getting my own. Considering my lack of credit, Verizon is going to charge $400 for a security deposit, along with the first months bill. If I want to buy a phone that is on there too ($199 but I'll get $100 back). I have considered a gsm company, but up here in the mountains, Verizon is basically monopoly. All the other carrier's coverage is hit and miss.

Actually, for that kind of money I would look at some of the ZTE, LG, or Samsung phones that Straight Talk has that are CDMA (Verizon) based, for under $200 you can get ST phone that will just work (sometimes using Verizon ST on a flashed phone isn't the most reliable for all services) with Jellybean. ZTE are not the best phones, but they are not crap either, a friend has the ZTE Solar and loves it... Plus you will still save $50/month over a traditional VZW plan.

We just don't have many choices here at our Walmart. I think the beat phone I've seen for ST that would work here is the S3

The S3 is nice, but at $399 its a little steep, although you might be able to get one on eBay for around $320 or so. The ZTE Solar is $179 online, 4.5" display, dual core 1.2ghz, 768MB ram, and JB 4.1. Not super impressive, but acceptable.
EDIT: Nevermind... it seems the Straight Talk ZTE phones are all GSM, not Verizon based, it has a SIM card when I looked at my friends this morning. Guess I was barking up the wrong tree the whole time. :/
No problem, I appreciate the input! I wish st would get the S4 already

Ah... gotcha... Out of the box you will only get Edge, the radios in the Rezound are not tuned for US GSM frequencies.
HSPA(+) is possible in some instances with significant tweaks to the build.prop file and radio NV settings, not a procedure to be taken lightly... And the signal has to be really good or it won't work... I mean REALLY good... This is @REV3NT3CH area of expertise, I'll tag him and hopefully he can be of assistance.
I been reading up on it but there are so many post I get lost in the shuffle, lol Im just trying to make sure I'm using the right sim before I go locking the boot loader and flashing to stock, but hey thanks for the quick replays, much appreciated.

Ok... Just for your info, nano, micro, mini, or standard SIMs are electrically identical, just the physical size is different.
