Further plans coming soon? - Motorola Photon 4G

Motorola timeline was updated so the photon and atrix are now listed as "Further plans coming soon". Now I'm no longer on the photon any more, but this pisses me off.

It's annoying effort sure. I was using joker's cm10 on my Electrify, but needed more stability and battery life so I'm back to cm7 for now.
Even if they would just release drivers to the public...I won't even ask for a full build.

I will think 100 times before planing to buy a MOTO phone in the future.

I'm thinking "Future Plans" means we are skipping ICS entirely for JB - I mean Development already started for The Photon back in the last update. They can't just announce right now that they are doing that for those 2 phones.

If my phone gets JB, I may just **** a house. However, I'm not concerned with wait time cause I'm not due for an upgrade till May.
Also, this will be my last Motorola unless we get a nexus device.
Even then, Motorola and Google are gonna hafta wow me

If we do actually get an update now to anything i will be happy because we can use the drivers to make the roms on here run better but my hope is that they do not cancel everything and do not give us an update at all because i will also definitely think twice before buying another moto phone. I am already on the fence about wanting to get rid of my photon and trying to pick us a nexus because of the timely updates and good developer support. Just waiting to see if motorola really does push me to do it by getting rid of any update for our phone.

I'm hoping that "further plans" means they are doing JB, if they were going to cancel they would have put "Will remain on Gingerbread (Android 2.3)"

I'm been using the AOKP JB Build on my photon and absolutely love it. So I'm not too concerned if there ends up being a JB update or not. Our devs rock. Screw motorola.

Big props to the XDA devs for sure. Unfortunately I'm on a locked bootloader so I can only use a few good roms.

Are you not wanting to unlock the bootloader? I know you lose 4g. But I personally haven't missed it. I've enjoyed the freedom of an unlocked bl.

No I can't unlock it. My phone was on 2.3.5 OTA update when I bought it. So it's never getting unlocked as of right now.

Page updated. Atrix 4G and Photon 4G to remain on Gingerbread.
USA:
Atrix 4G: Will remain on Gingerbread (2.3)
Photon 4G: Will remain on Gingerbread (2.3)
Same for Asia pacific.

Verizon Rejecting Motorola GB Updates?

Wonder if there is truth to this or not.
if it is true then +1 to verizon. tmobile or att would probably allow them even if they were buggy.
Yeah I saw that on phonearena.com this morning. I wonder how often this kinda stuff happens. Moto needs to step up their game bigtime.

Lmao are you kidding me? Have you seen how long it takes AT&T to push out updates to their android phones?
I'd rather have a buggy release sooner because devs on XDA are like 10x faster at fixing them anyways.

Maybe the update also has the possibility to unlock bootloader and Verizon is saying f*&k no, take it back.
probably not, but would suck for vzw users
Hopefully that doesn't delay the Atrix update D:

It's relevant because the same or similar bugs could exist in the Atrix GB they are developing. Also, if they are putting more resources into making Verizon happy, this could delay an Atrix release.
The whole point of the thread was to raise discussion about the possible implications if this news is in fact true.
I don't think that it should have any effect on our beloved Atrix 2.3 release (AT&T version), coz the bootloader is unlocked, so even if the update will be buggy the skillful devs here at XDA will do there magic to provide us with stable roms.

I believe you are wrong. As soon as the GB update goes live everyone is going to dump the HKTW build and flash the Moto update. At that point everyone is running stock and waiting for devs to fix all their complaints. Yes most of us will not be running stock, but that will be after the update comes.

I'm not dumping the HKTW build until it's been verified that the AT&T 2.3.4 build will have an unlockable bootloader. I've had a couple of friends that got hurt by the Sprint EVO 4G update and are still stuck waiting just to get root back.

From what I've seen and heard, being rooted won't prevent you from receiving this OTA, but you will lose root access unless you backup su and temp-unroot with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper or the like.

Unlikely to be soon, seeing as there are no known soak tests for ICS on the XT910 yet. Knowing Moto's treatment of their GSM users, we probably won't get an ICS OTA until the MAXX is out over here... in May.

Most likely scenario is that the ICS work was originally being carried out for the GSM RAZR, then someone in management intervened and made the DROID RAZR a priority due to Moto's contract with Verizon. I imagine once the ICS update goes live and there are no showstoppers, they'll continue to QA test the update internally for about a month before pushing it out as a soak test for a week, before finally pushing the release version.

When I see the fastboot-files for JB emerge, then I will believe it...
expect a waiting period of now to infinity
It took them 6 months to release ICS in the states... in Canada only 9... some people still waiting... I'll believe JB when I see it not even gonna bother hoping this gets officially released

Sent from that su*kin-fu*kin piece of sh*t with a locked bootloader...
I think they probably will release it this year, cause the leap from ics to jb is a small one, just a few changes. So they should release it in one month not three. But this is trying on their side to get customers back. They won't admit it but they lost a lot of customers with their attitude. But it is too little to late. Interest in their new phones is virtualy non existent. Nobody is getting exited and that is a sign of bad things to come for the company. They will try evrything now even maybe to unlock the bootloader, but nobody cares anymore...most of us are just waiting for contract to expire and to move on. RIP Motorola.

I partialy agree with you BUT:
"So they should release it in one month not three." - we will be happy if they release it in three months instead of 9....
"even maybe to unlock the bootloader" - I am affraid that they are to proud to do something like this...
"but nobody cares anymore" - in fact there are users who doesn't care about rooting, roms etc and from that point of view are the motorolas phones good choice as the hw is great...
"RIP Motorola." - right... Motorola lost nearly all their powerusers....
I think it will happen & you are going to see a complete swing shift now that the Google takeover is complete and they have started putting their personnel in charge, as well as the lay offs etc.
I know they originally said that they would let it run as a stand alone but I think the company is too big a worldwide name for them to let fail, they would lose too much face if they let that happen. You also have people that have now not lost their job, bricking it that it may still happen and looking to make names for themselves within the company and in that environment anything can happen.
Biggest thing for me is for another Operation Mosh should be ran right now and by everyone that possibly can, with the noises they are making about upgrades, changes that are being made in the company, new phones and bootloader unlock tools etc, I think the time for a push on this has never been better to try accomplish this goal.
Or worst case scenario, they will do what they did with 2.3.6 update to nonefigs when ics update was announced. They will dump it , because ICS was so close , just now they will do it with 4.0.4.
Just joking (hopefully )
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I just hope something leaks so the devs can get into it, because my wife was still running official 2.3.6 on her RAZR, nothing custom ever flashed on it and when the notification came through for the OTA ICS update Australia it just failed at instal everytime, i even took it out of cache folder and attempted manual installs all different ways and just kept failing... Upside was, my wife finally let me root and flash her phone so she now knows what she was missing out on lol.
So basically, going by past experience Moto would be better off sending there updates direct to the devs so it can be fixed and improved

I wished Google was more involved but it seems they don't really care. They just make the OS. Apple got their stuff on lock, nobody tells apple what to do. Apple doesn't need the carriers, the carries need apple. They probably have enough money to create their own carrier if they wanted to.

motop said all phones from 2011 on will be getting jellybean and that only a few wont because of device performance (i would guess the citris for one). For those that wont get it will get a $100 credit from moto for a razr hd/maxx or m models. Now what if moto says we have 4.1.x for the verizon cdma/lte razr but vzw wont allow the update. The update passes our moto tests and does not degrade the performance of the device. So no $100 credit then i would guess...
