[ROM] MROM-Encore [4.2.2][LINARO][CM10.1] build:20131003 - Nook Color Android Development

Introducing MROM-encore. Custom ROM for the B&N NOOK Color
Free Yourself and Feel the Difference
This is my attempt to build a stable, complete, and fully functional custom ROM for the B&N NOOK Color completely built from source code; MROM-encore is built on top of Cyanogen ROM latest source code. I recompiled all components to guarantee maximum efficiency and performance. Along the way, I realized that I needed things to work different for the B&N NOOK Color, so I also made some changes. If you like my work, consider a donation to my cause.
MROM-encore is entirely build from source. You will see the difference when you run it. Just to list a few features:
Entire ROM and Kernel are compiled and optimized with Linaro toolchain 4.7
Superior Performance. (User benchmarks have reported excellent performance)
Excellent battery life
Multi-User Enabled
Contains all the most common tweaks
QuickPic gallery application
While I tried to maintain the main core small, size is not the main focus.

The first comment I get is negative and shuts me down... It's fine, if you think that way, however, this particular ROM has been very successful for both the Atrix and the HTC Incredible 2. Before you slam down something, you should try it first...

It's nice to know that there are still people developing custom
ROMs for the NC. I'd try it out.

While it may be stable, it still has never felt as fast to me as the cm7 builds have ( even the hw acc builds) .
Anyway, thanks op, will be trying it in the morning!

Answering my own question - YES!!!! And this ROM is unbelievingly fast. I usually run the kanged version of CM7.2 but I am totally amazed by the smoothness and speed of this ROM as compared to CM7.2. I will post further observations when I get home from work.
Well Done!

Looks like I'll have to try this one out when I get home. One thing though, your warning is not applicable to us because we don't have a phone.

Can you get Cynaoboot in there? I'm having issues booting into recovery to flash GAPPS since TWRP keeps freezing on me. Your reboot to recovery works fine, but I seem unable to boot after a TWRP freeze and hold "n" to get into recovery. Cyanoboot I never seem to fail getting in there.
So far your ROM seems responsive enough, but until I get GAPPs I can't get any apps (I really should start saving Titanium on my SD or something) to give it a good run through.

I guess that makes me assume all responsibilities...:crying:

I'm looking forward to trying this out. Thank you for your work!

Have to try it out!
Thanks for doing something new for the Nook. Have used your Atrix Rom so will have to try this out.

CM9 roms is just not for Nook Color, all are to slow... I used Kang's CM7 and this new ROM seems as fast, if not faster. I like it very much, only this blue style is not for me If the OP could make a classical theme, it would be great. Thanks for this rom, it's really great!

This is definitely faster than any Nook Color CM9 that I've tried and extremely smooth. Running all day and not one issue, no fc's, nothing. I'm overclocking to 1200 and undervolting using Nook Color Tweaks - battery life seems good. While listening to an audiobook AND surfing the web I am only losing about 3-4% per hour.
As far as themes, there are other themes included - just use theme chooser (comes installed with ROM).

Theme
Hey Guys,
Thanks for testing out my ROM, I just wanted to drop a note about the theme, the current theme that comes pre-selected is Mixer-MROM, which is an extension on Mixed Theme, plus little enhancements for the swype keyboard.
But if your preference is to use something else, the ROM still has the default themes, plus, the android market is full of CM7 themes that you could apply, for a minimalistic theme, my preference is Minimal Bread... it's very simple and good looking...

To the OP, thanks for the great ROM! Just installed it this morning, and except for ADW crashing once on the first boot, it's been great.
docfreed, thanks for the tip on the Theme Chooser ... I prefer a more traditional theme.
I'm not very knowledgeable about undervolting. Can you tell me what settings you are using?
Also, does anyone know of a key combination that can get it into recovery on power up? As Quantumrabbit mentioned,
it's sometimes useful to be able to get into recovery without booting fully and then booting back into recovery.

Thank you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is still not a stable fix for hardware acceleration/video issues with CM 9/10. That kills Netflix, etc. CM7 is stable and everything works.
Thanks for the ROM, OP! Will try it out. :good:
If there's demand, I could make a flashable zip of the stock theme. The theme chooser themes are often problematic because the Nook Color uses MDPI sized pngs for the status bar in the hdpi framework and SystemUI. Also, some themes lack appropriate pngs for the soft buttons used by the NC.

Instructions
Make sure your Prime is unlocked and you have CWM installed (see this thread for help and a handy tool to do that)
Shut down the prime
Hold both the Power-button and the Volume-down button until the splash screen appears and some white text in the left top corner is visible
Release both buttons and press the Volume-up button
The device now boots into your CWM recovery
Make a backup of your current ROM
Inside CWM select "wipe data/factory reset" (optional but highly recommended)
Then flash the rom zip as usual
Downloads
Make sure you do a full wipe (aka "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM) before flashing this!!!
Please note that the ROM needs to settle down after the flash so give it at least 10 minutes after booting to reach the normal speed and smoothness!!!

What I've been waiting for!
Oh man, I can't wait to get home and flash this. I'm ridiculously excited to get my flashing fix on the Asus now. Good job on getting this out there, I'll post again once I install and give my 2 cents.
Edit: Installed, restored all my apps. So far the tablet is running very smoothly. I didn't do any metrics before I installed, so I can't compare, but I'm happy so far. Can't wait to see what else is added to the ROM.
TYVM & I can't wait to try this out! ^ Darn you beat me to 1st
Plain awesome. Bootloader unlock, Recovery and the first custom ROM on one day!
Awesome work on getting a custom rom out on 'Unlock Day' can you confirm whether the 'sd card' aka. internal memory partition will get wiped when installing the rom via CWM or not please ?

I installed the rom quite a few times and also used the normal wipe data feature. None of those actions wiped my internal memory
I updated the OP with some install instructions
Awesome, downloading and flashing right now, matching DHD and Prime.....
... well almost.
P.S. Thanks for all the help earlier, and the point in the right direction.

I am a bit sad kernel flashing won't be as easy, so many features are a bit harder to get... But I'll try to get a kernel with working init.d tomorrow
And with init.d I can give you better performance too

Dammit, I was just thinking how I couldn't wait to change that as well. You must be reading my mind.

EDIT: Installed, seems super smooth at the moment, love that I have been able to wipe everything properly and start from scratch with a great ROM.
Are the kernel mods you're planning related to the wifi idea you had about the aux antenna? Or are they just improvements overall?
tfp first rom!
Much faster then stock... thanks so much! we'll be using this until cm9 is released!

Great work buddy on being the first official custom Rom out on Prime. Plus its on the same day unlock tool came. Can't wait to try out your ROMS down the road once I decide to Unlock. Ill make sure to send thanks your way once it resets. I ran out at the moment. Very anxious to see how you tackle the wifi and GPS issue like discussed before. I remember you told me about some method done to the Desire to extend wifi range or something.
THE ball has started rolling and no stopping its momentum. Prime steamrolling all competition in sight!
Keep up the Great work. I had a feeling you was working on something behind the scenes

(It doesn't matter what rom you are on, it doesn't matter if you are already running my rom!!! Follow the install instructions exactly as they are written!!!)
YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE DooMLorDs CUSTOM RECOVERY AND KERNEL IN ORDER TO FLASH THIS ROM!!! IF YOU DON'T HAVE THOSE TWO THINGS THEN DON'T FLASH THIS ROM!!!
If you want to use Stock Kernel Follow the directions below after flashing this ROM and booting it up first!!!
1) Put Galaxy Task ROM on your Tablet
2) Backup all the apps you want to keep with Titanium Backup
3) Make a Nandroid Backup in CWM
4) Wipe Cache Partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache (In Advanced), & Wipe Data/Factory Reset
5) Choose install zip
6) Done!!! REBOOT!!!
To use Stock Kernel follow these directions only after following all the steps above!!!
1) After the above steps and reboot move on to step #2
2) Download both of these files and put the wifi modules zip onto your tab ( http://goo-inside.me/devs/task650/HTC_Jetstream/stockjetstreamboot.img) (http://goo-inside.me/devs/task650/HTC_Jetstream/Stock_wifi_modules.zip )
3) flash the stockjetstreamboot.img with fastboot
4) Then in CWM recovery flash the wifi modules.
5) Done!!! You should have working wifi with stock kernel
(You MUST be on V2 to flash V3!!! Just wipe cache & dalvik cache to update to the latest release)

not much yet. couldnt get ICS working on this tab. Had to send it in twice to get it fixed after trying. but this seems a lot better then stock.
@ EVERYONE
sorry about how long this has taken me to get going. with my daughter being diagnosed with cancer and everything that comes along with that I sort of lost my mind for a while. but i have a little bit more patience for development now and I'm going to try my best to make this rom as great as my Galaxy Tab 10.1 rom.
first of all - thank you!!
secondly, what android version is this based upon? 3.1? 3.2? not that it matters too much.
and most importantly - do we really must have doomlord's kernel? quite a few devices here are suffering from stability issues with that kernel, mine included.
Thank you for your contribution. Hope your daughter has a quick recovery.
Sent from my HTC PG09410 using XDA
well,
downloaded and installed.
looks awesome! and in the first few minutes it feels nice and smooth.
first thing that cought my eye - the pen icon still has the 3.x look..grey. the other premenant icons are now blue, i know it sounds silly but that bothers me a bit.
i hope that the kernel will remain stable with this version.

Not sure what you guys are finding unstable with it. But that's your choice to use whatever kernel you wish. But I'm not supporting other kernels or problems that stem from them at this time. So any issues that arise when using stock kernel shouldn't be brought up in this thread. The install instructions say it all.
I've been running his kernel with no issues at all for a while.
I must agree with Task. I've been using DooM's kernel since I got my tablet and I've never had any issues it runs so much better then stock kernel.

Glad it's working out for you guys. For many of us it creates stability issues and daily reboots. So I'm sure some of us would like to be able to use a custom ROM
and the factory kernel over no decent ROM at all.

What it is not:
I do not claim any thing special about the code other than some simple changes to make it work on the R800x. Either FXP built it (if it's a port) or it's code from CNA/Koush/freexperia or anybody else who has contributed to the CM9/Android repos.
I have made a few changes to the CNA vendor tree to add in a the ability to build zeus, changes to device/semc/msm-7x30-common to allow the semc_ota_from_target_files to work, I changed the libs in (my own) vendor/semc/zeus to be R800x libs and I removed the storefront from the proprietary files list in device/semc/zeus
KeiranFTW's CM9 kernel is recommended, it's included in all the zip files (source)
Now, onto the good stuff.
What Works:
Data
Calls
Wifi
GPS
SMS
Accelerometer
MMS (thanks chrono!)
What Doesn't Work:
ALS (Disabled by Keiran in kernel)
Bluetooth Media Audio (Thanks chrono!)
Video Recording (Thanks Neoandgeo for pointing that one out)
Facebook account syncing (Thanks DoubleByte) -- Note facebook account syncing looks like it's a problem within 4.0.4 framework...
Looks like there's an issue with navigation buttons the the R800x, looking into it.
What Kernel to use:
Use DFK-CM9 kernel (it's included in each zip) so far that seems to have the best balance of battery life & speed.
Anything else that doesn't work, lemme know, I'll add it to the list.
Link to CM9/CNA Files
What's in it:
1) 05/06 "lite" build (what you'd get from building it from scratch)
2) 05/05 "Full" build (added in some necessary apps, like messanger, music from cm9, etc.)
MAKE SURE TO INSTALL OVER A CM9 BUILD, OR HARDWARE KEYS HAVE ISSUES (DO NOT WIPE DATA WHEN INSTALLING)
Steps to do a install:
1) Download & copy to sdcard
2) reboot recovery,
3) MAKE A NANDROID!
4) wipe dalvik/cache
5) install from sdcard.
Thanks to Ridder215215, a complete guide on how to install CM9 (just replace the link in line 2 with the link above)

Agreed,
Also, is this going to replace the CM9 builds for the 800x?

Nope, I'm gonna make this side-by-side with CM9. (And i'm gonna get started on another one soon if cj360 doesn't beat me to it ) (In fact i'm making the latest CM9 now)
I am sure this has already been asked but am I to assume that as it is based off off CM9 that the touchpads will not work? The only thing holding me back from all the other CM based ROMs is that I heard that touchpads do not work as that is part of the Sony Ericcson framework... Anyway besides that... thank you for the ROM is looks great... also I recognize the wallpaper on the screenshot and I know its a music band but what is the name of the group?

Actually, this one isn't based off CM9. It's as AOSP as possible (no CM9 additions in it )
But yeah, touchpads are still iffy, and the band is Demon Hunter.
This is definitely going in my list of what to try once I can install custom kernels! This looks SO cool!
Pax, without you we r800xers would not have much.. thank you!!!
As always pax, well done sir.
Just to let those who are unaware know, in Advanced Testing in the Settings menu, Spare Parts settings force closes the Settings menu, as does Development settings.
Pax, you said, in your CM9 thread, that the T-Mobile Theme Chooser had been added to the source, right? Do you know if it's working properly, and do you plan on sticking it in CNA, or just in CM9?

Just CM9, it'd take a ton of changes to the framework to implement the theme engine into cna.

EDIT: Uploading Full version now (full version has music & messanger added in, i might add others in later.) it's second in the queue behind newest CM9 & mediafire says it's gonna take forever & then some. stupid slow internet.
CNA-Full up!

However I would hate to try and merge this into my current source tree, imagine the conflicts!
Seriously though, I'll be watching their git like a hawk now

+1 regarding the bugs noted. Originally I thought it was because Spare Parts wasn't installed, but it still FCs after Spare Parts is installed.
Is anyone else having a problem with the dictionary calling almost every word misspelled? Swype still detects the right words, but all my words are underlined in red. This is after flashing the newest, didn't stay long enough on the first version to notice.

Youtube (don't forget to install adobe flash)
Root
Native miui Backup\restore

Extras:
Navigation bar (not notification bar) is activated and lowered to 28 dip.
Not working:
USB mount
Corrupted screen rotation animation (but rotation works well)
Screenshot capture (I think it is SDcard access failure)
DPI changing in build.prop

English is not my native language, so sorry for mistakes.
Sad news Now I don't have Nook Color and this ROM will be discontinued. Sorry for that. If somebody wants to continue my work and use my rom as base, please, do it. As base I have used eyeballer's cm-9-encore-20120529-0730-opengl-unofficial and miuiandroid's Galaxy Nexus (maguro) official build. As last, I've made a small update with bigger navigation bar and rebase to 2.6.8 miui update, all bugs are the same.

No, and in near future I don't have such plans. I like Miui statusbar more.
1. What is the default dpi for this ROM? I was running 240 on CM7.2 RC3 and seems like it is still set to that (I use LCD Resolution app with set on boot).
2. Force close when choosing Sounds in Settings.
3. Still says 2.3.7 and build 2.5.25 on the About Phone screen.
Great work on this ROM though!
For anyone wondering, this has gapps built in.
Lots of potential with this rom. Issues I have found are mentioned above with force closing going on in settings. I like the navigation bar, not being critical, but it is hard for my 55 year old eyes to see. Is 20 dpi a necessary size or could that possibly be adjusted up? Thanks for putting this together.

Thank you for feedback! About your questions:
1) I use miui default - 240. At 160 dpi launcher looks like unusable. 200 is good, by something going wrong and home app fc. And on 200 lots of market apps become incompatible.
2) I'll try to repair, thank you.
3) Interesting... I will see why it looks like this, my base was 2.6.1 (first was 2.5.25, but I start from a scratch for 2.6.1)

About navigation, no, it is not necessary to by 20 dip. Default is 48 dip, but it looks like launcher bottom bar. If I will not forget, I will make it a bit bigger in next release.
I prefer 240 on the Nook, I was surprised to see it when I first booted it.
Very cool man! Might have to try this out tonight! Have you talked to hockeyfamily737? I know he was having a hell of a time trying to get this working after the move to 4.0.4. Maybe you guys could pool resources.
Always happy to see a new rom release! Could you please tell me what is the difference between this release and the one that hockeyfamily got stuck on? I know that he was trying to do an ICS port of MIUI too and started having problems. Is this release newer than where he left off?

I've have test his rom for a long time. But my release is newer, it based on the latest miui 2.6.1 and ics 4.0.4. My rom has stock look, no tablet status bar and so on.

I installed this rom and restored some apps from titanium backup. When I fired up app2sd pro to move apps from the memory to the sd card I get the following on the "on sd card" page:
"The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated.
Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device."
I've tried a lot of roms since I've had my nook and this is the first time I've ever seen this. If I can't move apps to the sdcard I won't be able to use this rom.
Any ideas on what the issue might be and how to overcome it?
I see under your not working section you have - Screenshot capture (I think it is SDcard access failure). Is this a general issue in accessing the sdcard?

Yes, it is a real problem, miui think, that we don't have sdcard. I've spent last evening to find out the solution, but nothing. It is the biggest bug of the rom. I'll try to eliminate it today.

[ROM][PORT] *** NookieJoyOS! v1.2.2b *** [6/14]

Hello Again Nookers!
I present to you NookieJoyOS!
Using Mirage's CM7 as a base I ported over the Defy 1.2.2 version of the JOYOS ROM. All I did was port it, thanks to the CM team et al as well as the JOYOS team for this rom. This rom is a straight emulation of the iOS look and feel.
Take it as it is, not sure how much or any tweaking I plan on making to this rom. However, if there are updates from the JOYOS team. I'll try my best to keep the rom up to date. I did this for fun, just to see if I could and it worked!
Tips & Issues?
-Recommended to format /system & /data as well as clearing /cache before flashing this new rom
-This comes with market pre-installed so no need to flash gapps
-For soft buttons download Button-Savior from market. Or you can go into settings and enable tablet tweaks for CM soft buttons.
-Some JOYOS apps has chinese characters in them, not sure what I can do about that Fixed!
-Recent apps screen shows kinds of, what's that technical term for it... oh yeah "wonky"
-There is an annoying "System Update" pop-up stating that this is not an official JOYOS release. To get rid of it, just remove "JOYSystemUpdate.apk" from /system/apps and it should stop. Or rename it to "JOYSystemUpdate.apk.bak". However you will now get a Force Close when trying to enter the System Update menu (not that you need it anyways) Removed!
-Please report anything else you find so I can post it here for other users as well
-See second post for CHANGELOG
And last but not least. Love it or hate it, just hope you enjoy it!

CHANGELOG:
NookieJoyOS v1.2.2b (6/14/12):
-Used Mirage CM7 5/27 build as base (tried using latest 6/09 build, but a merge from upstream was causing FC's on the status bar, gonna have to wait for an update from JOYOS themselves. Unless someone wants to play with smali files )
-Used Defy JOYOS Rom 1.2.2 to port
-Tons of xml and png edits to optimize appearance on our Nook Color.
-Removed all Chinese characters from all system apps (if you find any still, please advise)
-Fixed Music player control buttons alignment
-Fixed Settings display alignments
-Fixed Clock bottom menu alignment & removed all Chinese characters
-Fixed Contacts bottom menu alignment
-Fixed lockscreen alignment
-Removed system apps unused on our Nook Color
-Removed 'system update' error
-If you catch any misalignment anywhere, please advise
-Enjoy!
NookieJoyOS v1.2.2a (6/5/12):
-First release
-Used Mirage CM7 5/09 build as base
-Used Defy JOYOS Rom 1.2.2 to port
-Still has Chinese characters in some system apps (eg. Calendar)
-Alot of alignment issues (work to be done on next update)
Sweet! Its great to see so much development going on still.
If i may though, have any screen shots you could post for us?
DOH! Never mind... I missed the coming soon... Heh
Based on your post in the other thread I have to ask, are the screen shots in 240 or in 160 DPI? The "About This Phone" screenshot is making me ask.
Also, what did you note as different between the JOYOS v1.1.9 and the JOYOS v1.2.2?
Regardless, thank you very much for this!

It's in 240 dpi. The only way for it to fill up the whole screen correctly is to set it to 300 dpi. But then the icons and screens gets blurry. It's sharper at 240 for me so i left it there. I'm sure there's edits I can make in the framework-res.apk, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
Really didn't use it much to notice any difference between 1.1.9 and 1.2.2. But there are info on the updates on their website. You an find it at www.joyos.cn. It's in chinese so use google translate to translate it.

I have been using MIUI for quite a while on my NC and this looks very similar. Can someone tell me what the differences are between this and MIUI?
Looks good (excepting those alignment issues you mentioned might need a framework edit) but something really needs to be done about the update errors detecting this is an unapproved port! I've attached a screen shot so you can see what I mean.

There's nothing that states this is an "unapproved port". It just states that the rom is not an Official release form JOYOS themselves. I'll see what I can do to disable that on next update.
EDIT: If you want to avoid the "System update" error that keeps popping up, just remove "JOYSystemUpdate.apk" from /system/apps and it should stop. Or rename it to "JOYSystemUpdate.apk.bak". However you will now get a Force Close when trying to enter the System Update menu (not that you need it anyways) I'll remove it on next update whenever there is one.
It runs pretty smooth so far. How do they theme this wherever it is that it came from(China?)
It looks strangely like ios..

You may want to use the Atrix port by stevendeb25. It does not have this issue and is fully translated(chinese in notification clear button only). Great work though. Really like it in the Nook.
FWIW, I converted it to dualboot primary with the cache scripts, and I works like a charm. Nice!

Well i forgot to post what Mirage build this was based off. So guess i'll tell u now and update OP later.
The base I used was Mirage 5-09 build I believe. Not sure why I didn't use the latest one. But on next update I will.
Now to answer your question. I would recommend a full wipe /system & /data before installing this rom. However since this was based off a Mirage build. You could go ahead and try just flashing over the Mirage build and then wipe /cache and /dalvik-cache and see what happens?
Let me know how it went.
Thanks,
