Galaxy S3 - the sd card destroyer - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well it happened again. first the gs3 destroid my 64 gb sd card. now it killed my 32 gb card. they last less than a month on it.
soo good to spend money with sd card like this,,,,so happy....
Anyone heard of problems like this ? i'm so angry now i can barely think....
just lost my pacience and broke the damm card. have to control myself not to throw the gs3 on the wall...

Where did you get your sd cards from, and how much did they cost?

Strange. I have been using same sd card since the beginning and no problems ever.
And I have tried basically almost every custom and official rom there is.

And this. I have the same card actually, and same circumstances. Have used a few other cheap-o's with no issues as well.
Sounds to be a problem with the phone, or you got ripped off on both failing SD cards.. Are they dead 'dead'? Non working in a card reader connected to a pc?

I got my 8 GB class 10, used it in my S2 and my S. Working flawlessly in my S3.

You didn't buy a cheap card or fake one from ebay did you? I've had a cheap card fail on me before (transcend) but it wasn't in the s3. I've got a SanDisk extreme now and it's been very reliable so far. Worth the extra money I think

the cheap ones on ebay are absolutely crap, my friend had two returned one after the other, only 2 weeks usage and they are dead, finally got a refund and went for sandisk, working flawless more than a month now. go for the brand names, they are ok price now and save yourself from wrecking your s3 please

Ye I would echo this, cheap cards either "branded" or no name are usually open to fail after a few weeks / month I use a rule of thumb if the price in a retail shop is for arguments sake £1/$1 per gig and im buying online any thing more than 50% cheaper and its probably a dodgy poor quality card or so old its only class4 but seller isn't being honest.
You have to watch Amazon as well as those virtual warehouse peeps like to send crap cards out in place of quality you expected happened a few times. Now I stick to class 10 Sandisk Extream cards as others have mentioned never had a problem since and I can use them in my DSLR or any other device that needs high speed and stability.
If OP tries a sandisk and it still kills the card then you probably have a faulty card connector in the phone shorting the cards out.

And again I've been using my 64gb card for over 2 months now
SanDisk class 10
It's perfect

Playing with apps that boost speed of external sd card can kill it easily.

If you are using branded sd cards and stilll facing problem then go to samsung customer service

I agree with the masses here it's probably a fake card off eBay.

You haven't actually said what was wrong with the card, it could be that a chkdsk could have fixed it. Had this problem myself twice with CM9 and a CM10 ROM as they dont have support of exfat and they corrupted my card. However I fixed the partitions easily in windows using a micro SD converter by simply running chkdsk.

I bought a genuine 32GB class 4 SanDisk MicroSD.
After about 2 months in my S3 it started continuously mounting/dismounting, then becoming write protected, then not being seen by the phone / computer, I ended up sending it back. Don't know if the card was faulty or the phone 'destroyed' it..

I've had a very similar experience with OP.
My S3 already killed 2 cards and I'm on my 3rd.
The cards are all genuine.
1st one was a patriot 16gb class 10.
2nd was 32gb SanDisk class 10/1.
The problem is that after a while the card would constantly mount/dismount.
Now on my 3rd.

I've had a Sandisk 8GB class 4 micro SD card since my Galaxy S days. That means I've been using the card for almost 2 years now. It's been in my S3 for two months. It still works perfectly fine. Maybe you bought a faulty one (or even a fake).
The title was hilarious, though. It's like a trailer for a new movie.
Galaxy S3: The Card Destroyer
Tagline: It came from another galaxy on a mission to destroy every type of card known to humanity!

I've used 3 cards without problem..
8 gb Samsung Class 10
32 gb Sandisk class 10
64 gb Sandisk class 10

did it just not appear when browser or did you get errors randomly telling you it had dismounted?, were you able to remount and it worked or did it not then mount at all. Did you try to repair by chkdsk /f /r format etc?. I ask this is what mine did after installing a non exfat ROM.

They work, I have one. Let it format and you should be good to go.

I think the the recovery process does restore something to an SD card. I've never seen a single difference in ext SD card content that was non-rom related following a restore. So the likelihood of it working (yes:no) would probably be 70:30.

No you can't. If you want to replace your current memory card with this larger one, you have to use a computer to backup the files on the current SD card first and then transfer them to the new card. I don't think a nandroid will do that. That's what I did when I replaced my 8gb card with 32gb.
I have a 16gb class 4 card now and looking to get a 32gb class 10. I have been looking around seen prices from $15 to over $80 for a card, what is the best bang for the buck in terms of its price? I know that from a class 6 to 10 most people won't tell the difference but I'm buying a card that I'm gonna be using for a while as I upgrade phones in the future etc. Thanks and would appreciate some suggestions on what cards to buy, I'm trying to stay under the $40 range.

[Q] SGS3 Micro SD card

Saw a post about the micro SIM and got me thinking. Do they come with a micro SD card? Its been a while since I bought a phone so I'm not sure if they're still doing that.

I can tell you that the AT&T models don't come with a micro SD. I'm sure it's the same across the board.

No need to include a micro sd with the internal memory. My Inspire, for example did come with one, but only because there was very little internal memory.
I'm assuming you mean because of the varying internal storage. My DX has 16 GB internal and still came with an SD card. Only reason I asked. I didn't think twice about it before ordering my class 10 32GB lol.

Even if they included a Micro SD card it would probably be a small one like 5gigs.

No everything is internal storage. I've heard that the internal storage is pretty fast so unless you are gonna buy a class 10 you might be better paying for more internal storage too. I didn't have that option on ATT. However I bought the Samsung 32gb class 10 card. Check slick deals, they were 29 shipped from beach camera on ebay. I was going to be extremely picky on who I get my sd card from but they have thousands of flawless reviews and seem to be a great vendor, and it wasn't one of those too good to be true prices, so I bit considering that was the card I wanted anyway. I'll test the speeds out when it gets here.

What is your experience with SanDisk 64gb cards and the Note 2?

The lack of a 32gb Note 2 means I would have to use a 64gb card with it, we're I to purchase the phone. I currently have a 32gb S3. I originally bought a 64gb card with my S3 but experienced nothing but problems with it. When I go to the SanDisk support forums it appears I am not the only one; lots of people report the exact same problem, the card would basically die after 1hr to a couple of days. Card would show as damaged on phone, require a reformat, reformat would fail. Nothing could be done after that. I have used both a SanDisk and a Samsung 32gb card for years in various phones with no problems of any kind. When the problem happened with the 64GB card, I returned it, was told it was defective when it didn't work for the seller, was given a replacement, and the same thing happened. The seller just returned my money and said they didn't want to sell me anymore cards because they didn't know how I was f'ing them up. They couldn't get them to work again either. I ask because this is the only thing keeping me from buying a Note 2 TODAY. Anyone using a SanDisk 64gb card with theirs?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I've been using a 64GB card since I received my Note II on release day.
The only trouble I had was when I flashed an aosp ROM and the card was formatted exfat instead of fat32. I ran chkdsk on the card and it was fine after that.
Mine works fine.
The note 2 handles ex fat. My 64 worked perfect out the box. I have 40gb of movies loaded up and it never has failed
I have three 64 gig sandisk cards & have had nothing but trouble with them, I would NEVER buy another one.
I have had two replaced under warranty and one of my current ones is acting up.
Since I keep them backed up religiously to my PC I don't worry too much about it, but they are complete junk IMHO.
I went through 4 64gb cards before I got one that has worked. Had it since a few weeks after the gsiii came out.

Nothing you buy is going to have a 100% success rate and it won't please everyone.
I think most posts you see about the Note 2 sdcard will say sandisk 64, and I believe you will see the majority are satisfied.
Ya im gonna go with a sandisk 64 and see how i make out
Sent from my Beast SCH-I605
I would buy a Secure Digital or a Kingston myself, I wouldn't buy another Sandisk even if they where 50% off.
I had completely forgotten, I also have a defective 32 gig POS Sandisk sitting here that I never bothered to get replaced.
I ordered the SanDisk from Amazon.com. I don't get it, it's a memory card. There are no moving parts, it doesn't get tired or worn (unless you're constantly taking it in and out). The majority of the negative reviews say it worked fine for 4 or 5 months or so then just quit. With all the variables assicoated with something like this, to me it seems more likely an app or file caused corruption in the negative reviews.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
The problems I have had with Sandisk are not corruption, the cards completely cease to function & will not even reformat.
Sure, they replace the junk under warranty but it's still a PITA.
You guys buy whatever you want, I don't really care but it makes little sense to me to buy Sandisk when there are other brands available that are far more trouble free.
I have had a ton of memory cards over the years & the one brand I will never buy again is Sandisk (the only reason I bought them originally was no other brand made a 64 gig at the time)

You said it ceased to function, im not saying you're wrong or anything I'm just curious why and exactly what happened. I've had sd cards fail to read periodically but it was due to driver issues, moving from computer, etc. I've never had one that stayed in the phone all of the sudden fail.

Well, I can tell you exactly what I did with my last one, the second in a row not to work. I put it in the phone, it read fine. I plugged the phone into my windows xp pro laptop and copied a picture onto it. I unplugged the phone and accessed the picture. I deleted the picture and rebooted the phone. The picture was back. I then tried deleting the picture in every way I knew how; from the phone and the laptop. It was always back after reboot. I tried to format the card and formatting failed whether from the phone or laptop with formatting patch. Then the card read as damaged from the phone, it would ask to format it, and formatting would fail. I sent it back and the store couldn't delete the file either. I have been using both a SanDisk and Samsung 32gb card for years and never experienced any problem. Also used several 2gb sandisk cards in the past with no problems. Never tried a different brand of 64gb card, but maybe I'll try that.

I got mine through best buy for 50 bucks and they exchanged it every time no question asked. The 50 was a special though and I dunno what they sell for now. That was back when they were 150.
Ordered online and exchanged over the phone every time. I actually had 5 cards at one time it happened so fast that they just had me ship the four defective ones back together.
Then they screwed up and refunded my money and I called to let them know since I am not that kind of person and if there were to be an issue again I wouldn't have problems and they just told me they didn't really have a way to fix that and I should be happy. Let me tell you I was!

They're pretty much the same in terms of quality. The Extreme Plus cards are just faster (if you're using a USB 3.0 card reader)
Not having any problem with the 64GB SanDisk Ultra.
I have been using

For a couple if months without problems, as others have said it's the fastest currently available, although in the Note 3 it doesn't reach its potential due to lack of UHS-1 interface.

Don't buy SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I 64gb. I'm using this and it just spoilt. Tomorrow on Monday I'm going to their office for replacement. If u count tomorrow or would be my third replacement card within 1 year. Purchased in April 2013.. first replacement Sept 2013.. second replacement jan 2014.. now this replacement may 2014. And I'm using original because I replace them at the sole distributor office.
First replacement is because the card totally unable to read/write from phone and pc.
Second replacement unable to hold data. Meaning suddenly all data missing. When write or save things to card.. when restart phone is missing again. Tried on pc.. write files to the card. within few minutes is missing again.
This time is unable to write to card again. This time I tried chkdsk /f /r /x it says volume bitmap unable to read.

Probably, if you could buy one. Don't see it listed for sale. Saw the 128gb for $80 though.
I'm betting it's only 192 gb.
200Gb http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...uan_200g_a4a_200gb_ultra_uhs_i_microsdxc.html OR 128Gb http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._sdsdqui_128g_a46_128gb_ultra_micro_sdxc.html I'll stick with 128GB

Yes. It's compatible.
The specs listed for any smartphone are created based on what is avaulable on the public market at the time the phone is announced. The listed specs are not updated, but the larger sized cards are fully compatible regardless.
Keep in mind that you will need to use .nomedia files to exclude all non-mediaplayer related folders from the indexing process(just copy one into each folder you wish to exclude), or the Media process is going to drain your battery flat within an hour.

Just so everyone knows, the shortest SanDisk warranty is 5 years (some are warrantied for 10 years). If you have a bad card, don't contact the seller, contact SanDisk at http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/list/kw/microsd microsdhc/ (there's a live chat available). If you need an RMA to return the defective card, it's at http://kb.sandisk.com/app/rmaform/session/L3RpbWUvMTQyODI3NTgxOS9zaWQvSjlPcjM4am0= If you check the search box, though, you'll find that a lot of "bad" cards can be recovered pretty easily. (If it can be recognized by a computer, using a card reader, you can recover the data by running http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec on the card (instructions at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step ).
