[Q] About Finding a Good Rom - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok, so I could ask to help me find a good rom, but...all are different and everybody has an opinion, right? So here is what I want to know:
I go to the different rom pages, but how do I figure out what their particular tweaks are? I want good battery life, hacked hotspot, etc. You know, the usual. Don't need to overclock and all that (noob enough not to know/need to mess with that).
Couple things I would like that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere such as:
a "slide to answer" feature. You know, where a call comes in and you can just swipe to answer.
Dial pad pop-up that doesn't completely cover the mute/speaker options.,
I miss the Epic 4g Touch's feature that in the contact or call log list you can swipe left or right on the contact to "call" or "text". Instead the extra steps of having to press and hold to bring up a menu to choose.
So are there any roms out there that address these little quirks and if so, how do I figure out what rom's particular tweaks are?
Thanks for any help

Features of a ROM are almost always in the first couple of posts, either in change logs or feature lists. Some multi device ROMs such as CM10 don't have feature lists in their threads, so you'd have to go to their websites or flash them yourself.
My suggestion? Just try ROMs out. Start with the ROM threads that have the most posts or views. Those tend to be the better ROMs, because more people are interested. Just flash them, set them up, and explore them a bit. That's the best way to find what's good for YOU.
Most Sense ROMs don't have a ton of tweaks available, but if you're really looking for them, I would try Viper4G first. I'd also suggest AOKP, which is an AOSP ROM that has a ton of tweaks in it.

I would definitely give the viper 4g a whirl. you can always just flash a diff ROM if you don't like the one you get. also if you don't have it already, get goomanager. has different ROMS in it & makes it super easy to switch ROMS.

if u want a rom with stock look but is hella fast and great battery life go with Mean Rom.. if u want a rom that u can custimize go with Viper4G Rom

+1. Viper for tweaks, meanrom for performance.
Also, most ROMs have a list of the features on the opening post (OP) of the ROM thread. Some of them aren't all conclusive, but they help. I'd say your best option is ViperRom

[Q] Kovicon Hybrid Icon Pack Q's .. amoung other things

So, this here would be my very first post to XDA Forums! With that being said, I think it's safe to say I'm somewhat, if not very much a noob.
But let's get into it shall we?
I recently (2 days ago) flashed the Liberty 1.5 Rom onto my D2. Previous to that I rooted my phone about two months prior using the Z4 easy root app, but shortly after realized I didn't really know what I was doing (all I wanted to do was delete, what I now know is called 'bloatware' apps off of my phone) Then I found Liberty. so beautiful! .. so I figured out how to flash it easily by dl it from my pc and copy and pasting it to my sd card then loading using D2 Bootstrap Recovery.
Okay okay, now REALLY getting to what this is all about..
I saw, and fell in love with the Kovicon Hybrid icon pack. I want it!.. I just don't know how to go about getting it! I already dl'd it onto my pc from a Droid Forum site droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/48683-release-kovicon-hybrid-icon-pack.html to be exact. And now I'm not sure where to go from there. Do I use MetaMorph, do I unload the .zip file from Bootstarp Recovery?
Please help!! I'd be eternally grateful!!
Thanks for bearing with my, how you say, noob..ie..ness?
It's all good. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I glanced over the article, and it looks like you'd use Metamorph. I am, honestly, to lazy to type up a full set of instructions, so if you will forgive that short falling, I will direct you over to a set of pretyped instructions:
http://droidpirate.com/2010/08/18/installing-custom-metamorph-theme/
If ya have any further questions, encounter any problems, need some elaboration, etc feel free to ask.
Oh, I understand, I too suffer from said laziness .. Okay, I am looking into it now! This may take some time ha Thanks for responding in the first place! :-D
Omgosh!!! I did it!!! Thank you sooooooo much!!! this is awesome .. now I just need to find out how to change the launcher thing, the thing that normally has the app list button, and phone button and browser .. do you have any idea how to do that???
Congradulations. And, I prob do (or atleast can find instructions if i dont), but I am not sure what you are wanting to change? To a diffrent launcher? Change the buttons that are there? Change the look/background? Something else entirely? Give me alittle more info, and I'll do my best to find you the info you need.
hahah alright, well I tried posting a rather amazing picture that summed it up completely, but since I am so new it wouldn't let me .. Okay, it's the button(s) on your main screen. The one that is normally in the middle, if you tap it, it brings up all your apps. And then next to it usually on the left is the phone button to dial numbers. Then usually on the right is a button for a browser or sms! .. Ya know???
That's usually how it is by default? Unless you mean you wanna apply a new theme to it?
Maybe try PMing me the pic/link?
Sorry to get back like a whole day later! .. I found out it's called a dock. And yeah I was just wondering if I could custom theme that, and where to find different dock icons and such .. I know I could always use Adw Launcher, but I can never really get into that.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I dont really think you can theme the stock launcher that much. Though custom launchers - such as ADW, Launcher Pro, etc - have a wide variety of customization options.
Gilgamesh, you are pretty wrong. You CAN theme launcher2.apk
If you look at my pink steel theme it is completely different from other launcher2s. It has 4 shortcuts at the bottom 6 items in the menu and a 3d app drawer. I could even make the dock invisible if I wanted to. You can't do as much to the stock launcher (launcher2) but you can still do a bunch of customization.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Didn't say you couldn't do it at all, just was saying the options were more limited compared to the other launchers. Being that the other launchers have far more options, far more information, imo are easier to theme, and again imo preform allot better; it would, as always, imo, make the OPs life allot easier if he focused on the other launchers.

SO many Roms being released it is getting confusing, Maybe I should ask for ...

Since there are too many to look through maybe since everyone here has used one or maybe 2, I guess all of you might be help to the rest of us.. People POWER
What I want is something with the Go Launcher type UI... Instead of the Original because I realized If I installed it on top of the original it takes up some ram and I don't want unnecessary ram to be taken out, so if someone has created a ROM with that UI as the standard and removed the original that will fix the problem.
Also this ROM needs to be nice and zappy and be able to be overclocked.
 is there such a ROM out there

First of all wrong section, should be in q&a, reported.
Go launcher type ui you won't get, but you can just download it (maybe move it to system/app as well) and freeze (or even remove) the shipped launcher.
About a specific rom, codec is pretty nice if you want a samsung based rom, cm9 if you like stable aosp, teamasek or resurection if you want jb aosp and hypergalaxy if you want jb samy.
But all in all it comes down to personal preference, just check yourself some roms and stick with the one fitting you best.
Moved to Q/A and closed. The development section is not the right place to ask questions, make sure you are aware of the rules, and search before posting
It doesn't take long to read the OP of a thread, take a look at a few and decide for yourself.
Go launcher is that, a launcher, you can remove the stock touchwiz (Or whatever one the dev includes) one from any rom, using titanium backup or many other app freezing apps, or even a root file manager.

[Q] App list, dialer and other basic questions after Jester's Liquid ICS

I've recently updated to Jesters Liquid beta rom and now to the new 2.7 version if this makes any difference. I used to have a setting on the stock rom that allowed me to view all my apps as a list instead of pages of icons. I can't find this setting now. Is this due to Nova launcher, ICS, or me just not being able to find it? I really, really prefer a list with large text, much like the manage apps list that shows up, instead of a bunch of little icons that all look similar to older eyes that also don't see colors well.
I use Go Contacts ex and it's dialer, but this seems to be the same with the stock dialer. If I program a number to speed dial that has pauses inserted int he number, the call will not go through. It worked on the stock rom, but not on the newer roms. Is there a different dialer I could try or some other setting I can use to make these numbers with the pauses work again? (that's a trick from long ago where you would insert a pause after the phone number and then another number after it, like a password or access code, so that you could get into a voicemail system, etc. by just using your speed dial)
Pop up notification from a phone call. Any way to really increase the size of the text on this? I don't have any contact pictures downloaded, so I need to be able to see the name or number of who's calling. Any suggestions?
The status bar at the very top. I think I've figured out most of the icons, but could use a little help to be sure. Left to right it looks like
Bluetooth Screen brightness Location settings? (does this turn on and off GPS or what?) Refresh (is this to turn off sync features or what does it do) Wifi, Flashlight. How did I do?
I can come up with more questions, but I'm guessing you're tired of reading by now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
So, 24 hours, almost 200 views and not one response? I must have asked the most difficult noob questions ever, or am just so stoooopid that no one wants to waste their time with me. Wonder which one it is?
I can only help with the status bar question.....
Go to Menu.... System settings .... Interface ....... Status bar ....... Toggles....... Power widget ....... Widget button order.
From there you can see what is selected and the associated icons. I have changed the defaults, so I don't know if your guesses are correct. From the Power widget menu, choose Widget buttons to change which buttons are displayed.

I'm using Apex launcher on Liquid's pure ICS, not Nova on Jester's, but they're more alike than different and you can install Apex if Nova doesn't have this. But either way, try hitting the menu key, then Manage Apps, it should give you a list like you're looking for. Likewise, go to the App Drawer and click on Menu and it should give you the same option, or Settings -->Device -->Apps

I use the stock dialer, so I'm not sure about Go, but having used it in the past, I'm sure what you're looking for is in there. You might want to see if there's a FAQ section on their website, or go to one of the less technical forums and do a search in their apps section. Alternately, you could try DW Dialer, EX Dialer or Dialer One and see if they better meet your needs.

Try Settings --> Display -->Font Size
or
Settings -->System-->Accessibility and see if the app it suggests helps
or
search for Accessibility in the Play Store.
Also, maybe a different theme or dialer would help.

Everyone's is going to be different.
Go to
Settings -->Shortcuts-->Interface-->General and/or StatusBar. Check and uncheck stuff and see what it does. You won't break anything, though you might want to do a back up first in case you just really screw it up.
I can come up with more questions, but I'm guessing you're tired of reading by now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried it on the stock dialer too. The problem appears to be related to the stock dialer programming. I think the dialer apps I've played with somehow just piggyback off the stock dialer for function.

I haven't had much luck searching. Everything seems to be centered around a larger contact picture instead of larger text. I don't have any contact pictures in the phone, so that doesn't help me.

And just to be clear. If I select Manage Apps, a list of apps does show up like I'm wanting, but that menu is made for stopping, uninstalling, etc. I would like my app drawer button or whatever you call it to display my apps as a list when I'm looking for an app to open. I'll download Apex and give it a spin
It's an inelegant solution but maybe a good start. Download ES File explorer. That has an app manager button that lists everything in text format. Click in an app and it gives you a choice for details or open.

That kind of works. If I leave the app manager open in list view as the last thing in that app, then each time the app is opened I get a list view of apps. It requires pushing on the app and then pushing open, but at least it's a list, so I'm happy. Apex lets me move the app icon out of the way and stick the ES app in it's place, so this will work for now I think.

It's a Sense thing. I think most of what you're looking for is available stock on Sense based roms.
Someone just developed a new one based on the BAMF leak and it's pretty smooth.

I'll look, but honestly, I really don't enjoy switching to new roms. It takes me forever to get everything up and running the way I want it and to learn almost enough to function daily with it. I do like the list view though, so I'll keep an eye on reports of battery life. I did try the BAMF leak and was extremely disappointed with the battery life (running extended battery) and data drops. That was my first new rom (I originally rooted just to get rid of bloatware), and I was complaining about my dislikes on another forum when someone pointed me to Liquid's version here. I downloaded Jesters beta version and loved it compared to the BAMF leak. After having read all the internet articles, I was under the impression that the BAMF leak was the cat's meow. Now I realize those articles are about as unbiased as the national so called news.
Is Santod's new sense rom as laggy as the BAMF leak, or have they tweaked that out of it by now.

Almost no comparison to BAMF. Much smoother. Honestly, not as smooth as Liquid/Jester but data/signal seems more stable and almist everything works.
If visual stuff, contrast and ease if use are issues for you, it's worth a spin. I'm also running Apex. I don't know if that contributes to lag over the native Sense, but it has the features I want.
Yeah, switching toms is a royal pain, but you do what ya gotta do.

NEW TO ANDROID! Looking for specific ROM.

Hello all,
As the title states, I'm completely new to Android. I've been with the iPhone for quite some time and have recently changed over to the HTC One. Everything is awesome so far, but there are a few annoying quirks I'd like to change to make it perfect. I've done a bit of research, but I guess my searching terms were a bit too specific? I'm looking for a custom ROM that is based on Sense 5 with 4.2.2 and WiFi calling so I can have the option to keep Blinkfeed, Zoe, TV apps and the ability to delete some of the preinstalled programs like Facebook and Twitter. In addition, I'd like to have the option to give the HTC logo wake device functionality. I believe this is done through installing the tbalden kernel? I'm looking at the Trickdroid ROM, as it seems that might be the closest thing to what I'm looking for, but in a video review I watched of it it seemed there was only a wake from volume rocker option. Also, it seems Wifi calling is unavailable at the moment? In any case, if there is something out there that you guys can suggest I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

I can at least verify a lack of WiFi calling on all 4.2.2 ROMs. We will have to wait for the official T-Mobile ROM to drop or leak to get that functionality.

So once the 4.2.2 update comes out for T-Mobile HTC One's, we'll be able to have wifi calling capability with any 4.2.2 ROM ie. Trickdroid? Also, just a quick side question, I'm looking at the Trickdroid page and it says there is an option for the tbalden kernel, which is where the htclogo2wake functionality lies. Does this mean while installing Trickdroid, I'll have the option to install that instead of the stock kernel and have the options to map my HTC logo? Thanks!

To answer your first question, as long as the setup of WiFi calling is the same way as 4.1.2, then I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Awesome! Thanks, you've been very helpful! You wouldn't happen to have any experience with Trickdroid would u? haha
Trickdroid is great! I've been using it for quite some time and no issues. I use my cell as my work phone so reliability is big for me - and no problems... I haven't played too much with any of the kernels for the one but you will need to flash it separately. Welcome to Android!

That's good to hear! And thanks for the welcome! I see on the Trickdroid page that the tbalden kernel is an option. Does that mean it's already built into the ROM and that I'll have the option to remap the HTC logo or is there something I have to do along the lines of choosing it during the ROM install? Thanks!

If I remember correctly, Trickdroid uses Aroma installer, which takes you through an install wizard (prone to freezing so don't worry if it freezes, just reboot and retry) and let's you select a bunch of different options, not sure if Kernel selection is included in that or not.
Thanks for the info. I just wanna get all the info I can before attempting my first custom ROM install. That kernel is pretty much the biggest thing I'm looking for, this power button at the top thing is getting a bit annoying.. lol Also, I have an unrelated question that I'm hoping maybe someone here could answer. I couldn't find anything through searching the forums. Are the sound profiles on our phones customizable? Every time I change profiles, I have to change the settings manually. For example, I want the vibrate profile to quiet all sound and just vibrate for everything. However, when I go back to normal and switch back to vibrate, the sound for notifications and alarms are back on. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of profiles??
No 4.2.2 based rom supports wifi calling so far. If you want a customized rom, try viper. You will addict to it.

So if I installed a 4.2.2 ROM now, would wifi calling be enabled when T-Mobile releases its official update automatically? Or will I have reinstall the ROM?

no. you will have to wait for the update for the rom your on for wifi calling. as far as roms go viper has the most customization by far and arhd is the closest to stock but i recommend viper as you can keep it stock looking or if you want to customize to your hearts content and i mean everything is customizable. and venom hub has the kernels that enable logo2wake and many other options available. happy flashing bro:highfive:
Ok, Thanks! I'll definitely take a look at Viper then. Also, are you saying that it has the tbalden kernel already built into it? As in I don't have to do anything separate in order to use logo2wake?

no. in the venom hub which is an app for viper rom it has all the compatible kernels and when you select it. it will download it and boot to recovery and flash it(twrp only cwm manual flash only)
cool, I'll definitely look into viper. So you're saying that it's based off of the sense UI and looks stock until you start customizing? Because that is exactly what I'm looking for. I want to have pretty much everything stock with the exception of the battery icon in the status bar, logo2wake and some other little things here and there. Also, is there an option to wake the screen when you get a text or notification without having to use a third party app? Seems like such a no-brainer for this to be a part of the phone stock, but for some reason is not.

I wanted some AOSP but every rom i tried had terrible battery life (like 1% dropping every 3 minutes) with just using web browser. I tried ARHD GE, CyanogenMod, AHRD Sense version, faux kernel, aux kernel and elemental kernel and everything was kind of the same. Now im using Sense based Insertcoin ROM and i must say that battery life is way better and got rid of most of bloatware

im new

So i made a custom "ROM" (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-2/galaxy-tab-2-unified/6-0-1-ng-omni-t4176629) but as i wrote there its just a regular old custom rom with some apps added, the most impressive thing i did there is edit build.prop. So that should tell how clueless i am. So i thought why not write here and hope a person who actually knows what he is doing helps me.
I have a "couple" of questions:
1: How can i make a ROM pre-rooted. Or how can i make the ROM to flash super su while flashing itself?
2: Kernels. How do they work and how can i make my ROM to come with one?
3: Features. If you have used SlimRoms you know how cool their recents are. How can i port it to other roms? Or features from other roms in general?
4: Customization. Themes, Battery Icons, Boot Animations, Wallpapers, Etc Etc Etc...
5: System UI. How can i add menus to settings and move stuff around there? Or changing the entire look of the system?
I have NO idea what compiling means and i can't even do it since i have windows.
Can't code stuff.
Should I give up?
Thanks in Advance

AlaskaLinuxUser has made tutorials about building roms and his videos are very beginner friendly.
See his youtube channel

His XDA thread about his tutorials

This "Where should I start" video explains where you should start pretty well.
He has made tutorials about most things from your list.
I don't think he has made a video about pre-rooting roms, about system ui customization and about adding features from other roms (that is easy tho, just cherry pick what you want), but I know that he covered everything else. Also, it's worth mentioning that when you know the basics you will be able to figure out how to do everything from your list.

Watched some of his vids. I know i can't build a rom. I have 8 gigs of ram. This isnt even my own PC so when i get one it will probably have even less RAM. So i guess i will just edit pre-built roms. Looked around his channel couldn't find these videos can you please send link?

You can build even on 8GB. It will just build slower. I know a person who was able to build cm-14.1 with 4GB of RAM, but it took like a whole day to do so.
It depends in what you do, but most of the times you must build it to be able to use it.
Otherwise you will have to resort to tricks like hex editing, which is very hard and a lot of times so hard that it is impossible in the case of Android.
