Update HBOOT 1.15 to 1.19? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

It appears that HBOOT 1.15 will not get s-off any time soon...Is it O.K. to upgrade to HBOOT 1.19 and wait then for s-off capabilities, or is 1.19 taboo also.
I am rooted, can I stall HBOOT 1.19 with abd, or would I have to root the phone again, and install a recovery...

There are 2 ways, ruu or revert to stock for ota. You must relock bootloader before ruu or ota. For the ota you need stock recovery as well. There's a few misconceptions floating around. First is that you need to update to run the latest base, this is simply not true, I'm running mikeys latest without issue. The second is basically the same but involving the aroma installer, flashes fine but sometimes kernel will not flash and you boot to bootloader. This does not mean you need to update only that the kernel did not like the new base, fastboot kernel and you'll be fine. Some people still have WiFi issues and others have LTE issues, both should have been addressed in the last 2 updates and people with the latest firmware are still having problems. To me this does not warrant relocking upgrading and going through the unlock again.

A lot of people including myself don't consider 1.19 an upgrade and like om said you don't nerf to update

Always best waiting
In my experiences, it is almost ALWAYS best to wait. If for some reason 1.19 gets s-off before 1.15 then u can update. But for now, just wait. I got lucky and I'm 1.12 s-off either way warranty is gone so always get s-off whenever possible.

I keep seeing threads about s-off. I'll like people to be more specific as to what they're trying to achieve that they can't while being s-on?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

Just the ability to directly flash software to partitions normally inaccessible, Firmware basically. Those of us s-on would have to flash back to stock, lock hboot, and accept an ota or relock and run the ruu

Also, don't know the details of any of it, but in the s-off bounty thread guy is donating a 1.15 hboot. U can flip a coin better than I can say what they will do with it then. Either update it to 1.19 or try and find the exploit on 1.15.
Personally, if I was a badass at finding exploits in HTC coding then I'd crack both like yesterday. But if I was that badass I'd have better stuff to do as well... Hoping for 1.19 s-off just for future development.

Quick question: Are you saying that if I wanted to run Mean ROM that I do not need to be in the latest OTA? I'm confused because I was under the understanding that we needed to be on 2.13. Please clarify for me.
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app

No you don't, I ran meanrom a few days ago and today I switched to viper 2.02. Meanroms kernel installer worked fine, viper required fastboot but both run fine

Thanks for the quick response. Wow, I feel like a dumb *ss now. I've been holding out trying any new roms because I didn't want to come off of hboot 1.15.
Which rom do you like better so far between viper and mikey's?
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app

The level of customization on viper is crazy, meanrom runs great with evilz kernel and is closer to stock. I'm still sifting through the different mods for viper and I've yet to check out any themes but so far but I'm still digging through it all

New root

My friend wants me to root his phone. Going to use HTC method. My question is, can I use the same bin.img from my phone for his phone. That way I can skip the oem unlock code?

I highly doubt it. Even if it's the same model, it's NEVER a good idea to try to use the same file from another phone, you could easily brick it.

Sitlet is right, it won't work. The codes are phone specific.
You might want to s-off his phone instead, he'll have less problems, and since you're rooting it, he's gonna come to you every time it has an issue.
It will better if you use revolutionary.io method. Thanks to this one your friend won't lose warranty and can easily install every custom kernel by any recovery.
Wysłane z mojego HTC EVO 3D X515m
Yeah, if the phone is on hboot 1.4 I suggest using revolutionary.io. If on 1.5 then downgrade it, it's not as complicated as it may seem and the easier control is nice to have.
Gonna ump-teen back the revolutionary method here. As long as your friend doesn't take OTA updates he should be fine. The only real problem with that is keeping the radios up to date.
But with the source code for ICS on the 3D out, I imagine more support for the 1.5X+ HBOOTs will be cropping up in the months to come

The JuopunutBear (wire trick) method for gaining S-OFF already supports doing it with hboots through the 1.58 bootloader that came with the official Sprint ICS 2.89 build.
The stock kernel that came with the 2.89 ICS build requires the 1.58 bootloader, but the ROM developers have been replacing that kernel with the VM leak kernel that runs with earlier bootloaders, including 1.4.
Once your phone is S-OFF, no matter which method you use to get there, it will stay that way unless you use the "fastboot writesecureflag" command to set it back to S-ON, so you can flash any OTA, RUU or bootloader you want without having to worry about losing your S-OFF status.

How Can I Flash New Radios with S-On?

I have Hboot 1.15, Fresh EVO OS. And used the Regaw Autoroot following the OTA Update. I heard you can do this using fastboot or HTCdev, but I'm not sure how to do this... And could not find any answers (My concern is that the new FRESH updates use the new radios, and I updated to it, but can't flash the new radios)
If this has already been answered I apologize, but I couldn't find it.
Thank you for the help!
Dude there's threads all over the forum about this issue. Just spend 2minutes looking and you'll be all set
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
You can't update radios if you are s-on hboot 1.15. Your only option to update the radios is to relock and take the ota or install the new ruu. Then unlock again, install twrp, and then install your favorite rom. As many will state, never take the ota because you may loose ability to get s-off in the future. This may be true, but there is no s-off solution for your hboot anyway so you might as well bite the bullet now and live in the present instead of waiting for something that may never happen in the future.
Interesting. All right Thanks for your help. And as for there being threads "all over" I was getting conflicting reports, since I saw on one page where it was possible to flash using HTCdev with S-on, but there was no link or instructions given.
To address ur main concern, there is no need to update your radios. If you want to run a rom that is based off the latest update all u need to do is make sure your kernel matches the kernel in the rom. You can update your kernel with Flash img GUI, found in the app store. Just download the rom u want open flash img GUI select the rom and choose to flash kernel img. Once complete, wipe and flash rom. Njoy!

S-on hboot 1.12
Ok, so I'm rooted, s-on with hboot 1.12. I was able to do the firmware update and update the radios. I've read like crazy and I'm not seeing anywhere I can update the PRI without s-off. Is this correct? One thread said I can flash anything since I'm hboot 1.12 so I'm confused.

I'm a little bit hesitant to do that since I've read it can go crazy wrong and I'm not as savvy with the phones as the folks on the forums. Do I have to though in order to update my PRI?
I'm not sure, I've been s-off since I got the phone.

I am S-ON HBoot 1.15. Is it possible to flash HTC Stock recovery, go to stock rooted rom, use OTA root Keeper and take the new OTA?
You don't need OTA root keeper because your going to have to do HTC dev to unlock the device again.
With that being said I wouldnt recommend taking the OTA or running the ruu to update because you'll be on the new hboot
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Not to mention the new base for stock has introduced a few of its own issues that the new firmware/hboot can not fix. Several people have attempted to downgrade thinking its the best alternative and brick their phones in doing so. The new firmware doesn't change much anyway

I ran the latest RUU with bootloader unlocked, s-on, rooted and I got everything except the latest radio and hboot. You have to relock the bootloader, then run RUU to get a complete upgrade.

Yes, I used ZedoMax unlock tutorial to unlock the first time. Why do you not wish to have the latest hboot?
I was hboot 1.15 when I ran the latest RUU unlocked and updated on the firmware. I decided that having the latest radio was important and you can not get one without the other right now from what I could find. So, I now have the latest radio and hboot, I unlocked the bootloader once again and reflashed my custom ROM.

Sure, here ya go.
Install SDK tools first - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaNM-lt_aHw&feature=fvwrel
Relock bootloader - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yS7yy4XVA4&list=SP53B1EB8DBE7A5B59&index=1&feature=plpp_video
Update with latest RUU - http://stockroms.net/file/HTCEvo4GLTE/RUU
Hope this helps...I love mine after the latest hboot and radio together. It now has none of those pesky issues I was fighting.
P.S. after you relock, the phone will NOT reboot. Just keep it on "bootloader usb" and then run the RUU from your computer. Then unlock again. It will be all updated and run great.
I would suggest waiting as well. Chances are your missed calls and texts aren't going to be fixed by a new radio

Its being worked on. Nobody is going to announce "oh hay guize I'm working on getting S-OFF". You'll know who is is when they find S-OFF and announce it.
What makes you think 1.19 will be found first? That doesn't really make sense.
I just think it makes more sense to have the latest radio. It was updated by HTC for a reason and everyone that wants it, not being s-off already, has to do what I did. Consequently, since the update I have LTE nearly everywhere I go in NW Houston, prior to the update was spotty connectivity at best.

Most people don't have LTE coverage yet, so for most the radio isn't worth hboot 1.19

Unless of course, you're having issues running a custom rom on the latest firmware and older hboot. Then, one may wish to look at the options even if they are the "most" as you say or the least as I clearly represent in your estimation.

[Q] Hboot 1.12 S-on unlocked. What can't I do?

I've looked for weeks and I'm still unsure about this. I can run a custom ROM being unlocked. However, can I flash a radio? or do I need to be S-off? My old EVO allowed me to do an "all in one" zip that would include ROM, radio, PRI, PRL etc. When I got my Sprint EVO LTE a couple of weeks ago, and after reading XDA forums for hours, I was pleased to know my Hboot is 1.12. It seems you can do more with this version than any other.
Thanks for this clarification.
It's easy enough to get s-off if u follow instructions. Be easier if u did, and there are people who would love to be in your shoes to have s-off on this phone.
I'm not sure about radios. I think u need to be s-off to flash just a radio. And if u stay S-ON upgrading thru RUU's will put u on perma-S-ON hboot. Or permanent until someone can come up with an exploit. And that isn't looking too promising atm.
I know 1.12 is more slack than 1.15&1.19, when S-ON, but might as well s-off while u can. Right?

[Q] Is there a point in updating hboot?

Sorry in advance. This is more of a confirmation than a question. Anyways, a friend and I have been in discussion about updating hboot. Now I'm s-off with hboot 1.19 and all I did was update to the latest radios. I'm more inclined to believe that that's all I need to do. My friend on the other hand says I should take the OTA or run the latest RUU, get everything including the hboot, then unlock the phone again and continue as normal. His reasoning is because he claims that the phone works better with the latest everything rather than just the radios. Is there any validity to his argument or should I just ignore him.

I'm not an expert but what I do know is you NEVER want to take an ota if you're rooted. Also upgrading to the newest h-boot is only asking for trouble. Who knows what HTC has up their sleeve. You don't to end up getting burnt. I am on .19 and have the latest radios and firmware and all is working perfectly.
