[Q] 2 issues. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1) I restored my nandroid backup thru CWM and reverted back to 2.2.2 stock rom I had at the first place when I got my atrix.
It works fine but the device randomly shuts down and the only way to turn it back on is pulling out the battery. How do I fix that?
2) I heard the only way to get rid of the bootloader logo is to flash an official SBF file.
Is it possible to revert to froyo 2.2.2 using SBF? plus I didnt manage to find the 2.2.2 sbf file over the web, does it exist out there?
Right now I'm on 2.2.2 (restored from nandroid) but the bootloader still appears so I basicly want to go from 2.2.2 to 2.2.2, just this time using SBF

1) It sounds like your backup is corrupt.
2) You won't get much help around here with sbf files. Too many users were bricking devices, so the sbf files were removed from the forum. The best and safest option to return to stock is to flash a Froyo fruit cake. Otherwise flash a custom ROM.

If I remember correctly, the only way to remove the "unlocked" is to flash the Froyo 183 sbf. I do not recommend doing this.
Also, many device owners that have sent their Atrix in for service get it back with an unlockable bootloader. You may want to consider replacing the digitizer yourself.

If there was any way to do this, don't you think someone would come up with it already? I gave it a shot myself, no luck.
The white logo doesn't help at all sine the text has black background.
Trust me, this has been made specifically with the intention that it cannot be removed or concealed. There is just no way. Just deal with it.

that really sucks. Hope theyre dumb as much as I think they are and they won't notice that.
Do you know if there's a way to hide the Superuser application? I tried unrooting but the application still exists, I also can't uninstall it for some reason. Any suggestions?

When you rooted your phone, Superuser.apk was installed as a system app to prevent it from being removed.
I found manual steps to unroot that you can try, but I have not confirmed them working. This assumes you used the preinstall method described in that post, but I think it should work regardless. Here's the steps from this post from Atrix Forums:
You must still have full root access to accomplish this. This will remove root access and also erase the traces (most) of root access from your phone. There may still be evidence on log files, but that's something I cannot help with.
First, start by downloading Android Terminal Emulator from the Market
This will only apply to the /preinstall root method posted above as different root methods place files in different locations, but if you know where they are located you can use the same methods to remove them.
I'm going to use the Terminal to delete everything, but you can also accomplish the same thing using Root Explorer or another root file manager.
Un-root Steps:
1. Open Android Terminal Emulator (see download link above)
2. Type in the following commands, hitting ENTER after each line of code: (after typing 'su' below, look for the Superuser request and approve it, you can only continue if you get the # prompt.
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 /preinstall
rm /system/bin/su
rm /preinstall/sqlite3
rm /preinstall/dosu
rm /preinstall/Superuser.apk
rm /preinstall/su
reboot
3. Let the phone reboot fully and then go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > find Superuser and uninstall it just like any other app.
4. You're un-rooted and all files that /preinstall put on your phone have been removed.

Go to Manage Applications and uninstall su updates. Then use a root level file explorer to go to /system/app and delete su. Might not work if you successfully unrooted. Might have to re-root.

Can someone give me some straight directions on how to flash an official 2.3.4 SBF on my international atrix?
Im taking full responsibility for this in case anything happen I take all charges. I might have a low posts count but I'm not newbie I'm into all of this for a long time, I just don't post a lot. I mostly read and learn.

Bump.
Someone?

SBFs are dangerous, I guess most people have learned to avoid them. That's why you're not getting any responses.

My atrix digitizer is barely functional I gotta take it the company to have a fix under warranty and thats why I need to flash this SBF so bad - I need the "Unlocked" in boot to disappear

[Q] Needing Advanced Help After Root and Reset of Vibrant

Hello!
I did something really stupid. I rooted my Vibrant, and all was super easy and fine, but my home button was being unresponsive so without thinking enough did a reset on my phone. I wanted to make sure I covered my bases so I downloaded Titanium Backup and "backed up" all of the important things....call log, contacts, browser history, etc. etc. then did the master reset, but I don't think it worked. So now that I have done the reset it gives me force close messages on all of the main functions of the phone....dialer, web, you name it. Plus my home button still isn't working :/
So, the way I see it I have two options; risk sending the phone back to t-mobile under the guise of the home button issue....and maybe pay dearly for it (Superuser is still in the apps)
OR....
Hope and pray in the power of the XDA Gods, at least in order to get this to the workable category.
Thanks for any advice!
Are you able to get to the "Terminal Emulator" without it FCing?
You could boot into Clockwork Recovery and flash eugene's STOCK rom to see if that fixes anything.
hmmm, there's only the superuser and then the preinstalled apps. i did the one click root, so maybe that was missing the terminal app?

No its not missing, the "one click" just does rooting for you. You have go to into the market and download the application "Terminal emulator," if you're able to get that then you can unroot yourself and exchange your phone without T-Mobile ever finding out that you rooted. Or you could try flashing a stock ROM with Clockwork Recovery
got it! unfortunately though, every time i click market i get the force close :/ Meanwhile, I downloaded the clockwork recovery, but I'm definitely new to this, so where would I wanna go from there?
Thanks a lot by the way

Get Terminal Emulator as well; where do you want to go from now? You want to try to troubleshoot this problem or just unroot the phone and exchange it
Edit: Figure ill just make it easier.
If you want to troubleshoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7329357&postcount=2 is what you're looking for. Follow those instructions and your problems will most likely go away.
To unroot
Code:
su
rm -r /system/app/Superuser.apk
rm -r /system/xbin/busybox
rm -r /system/bin/su
Also remove apps that require root access.
Either one will do the trick. I would go with troubleshooting, the directions are simple. If it doesn't work then.. unroot and make sure that all the bloatware is there + no root applications so they wont be able to tell.
Here dude. It seems you can not download terminal emulator from the market, so here it is with the root file for good measure. Only thing is I hope you have a way to download it and get it to your phone. Gl, and let me know if you need any more help.
Just making sure we're on the same page.....so you meant to install clockwork on my computer right?
My market FC's every time i try to go in there.
Any way that I can at least get this guy to fly in under the warranty inspection radar and be functional is the way I'm wanting to go. should i attempt to load the files from the clockwork program into my phone? Sorry I'm so fuzzy on this.

If you can follow directions good, this post should solve your problem. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747634&page=2
Hey bro, here is a simple fix.
Download ROM Manager which I attached below and install it. Within ROM Manager you will have a option to install Clockwork, so go ahead and install in through ROM Manager. ( Clockwork gets installed on your device ). Then follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740077 to download a stock Vibrant Rom. Follow the instructions on how to install the ROM, and you should be good.
Forgot permission for "unknown" in superuser app
Ok, so I accidently tapped forget for the "unknown" in super permissions and now when I try to type su in adb shell it says access denied. Any help?
I ve tried about 4 imulaters none will open.then I thought I had found the aswers to one of my issues, getting terminal imulator to work. But after ive installation and reboot just for good measure. I get the message that I cant install apps connected to the market. Im thinking maybe I should try unrooting and resetting the imei. Is there another way?
if youre getting a lot of fc errors, then odin back to JFD. make sure to use the .pit and .tar files. you'll be on official stock. then you can root/ update to official. anyway, its never a bad idea to go back to complete stock after major errors.
I tried this emulater su removal thing but it said that none of those fials exist. I am clearly rooted with su. Could it have something to do with my 17 digit imei cant seem toswitch back?
No and you seem to be pretty clueless to what they are suggesting you do. The easiest way to fix most problems with FC. Are using Odin to flash the OS back to stock. Several guides in the bible. Look under android development for the vibrant bible.
Maybe I should elaborate my issues so I dont seem so clueless, I dont have sync! I have tried kies, and odin but does didly squat w/o sync.
I dont have market access or OTA support. I just got back terminal after about 15 tries.
So im basically try to see which I get first; unrooted or stock reset. All of which seem to have some OTA necesity unless I can find a complete APK or termina access deal. Yea im a noob to
If your going to do anything to your phone such as rooting you need to download odin. There is a tutorial in the dev section under the vibrant bibal. Odin will restore your phone back to stock like it was out of the box. There are plenty of ppl willing to help on these forums so if you run into problems just ask. Every time I thought I screwed up my phone odin has saved my life.

[Q] Stuck with rooted but crippled stock ROM, Optimus V...looking for help

I've spend much of the day trying to root and then flash my new Optimus V. For some reason I keep running into snafus, even after rooting two Eris phones and a Nook color without too much difficulty. Would REALLY appreciate the group's assistance.
After much trial and error, I finally got root using SuperOneClick.
After that, I first tried to use adb to install the asop ROM per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962862 , but would always get stuck on the blue bootloader screen. By trying to fix that, I got stuck in a clockworkmod recovery loop. I finally got out of that by doing a flash_image of the stock ROM via adb. But then, the google market, and hence my google apps (including clockworkmod) was gone.
So now I'm stuck without access to clockwork mod, and a broken stock rom/interface (with no market access.) There may be a way to launch CWM even with the vashished google apps, but I'm not sure what it is...
Here is what I do have readily available in my "toolkit":
-root still working (via superoneclick);
-Root Explorer (having manually installed the Amazon marketplace apk);
-abd access to my 4g SD card;
-a backup 4g SD card, should one prove helpful.
My goal is pretty simple: to get a good custom rom (probably ASOP) with a fully functional suite of apps, and to MAKE SURE that the other corruption I've unwittingly done to my phone's data is complete eradicated.
I apologize for the jumbled nature of this post. I'm sure I'm leaving some diagnostic stuff out that would be useful--please fire away and I'll be more than patient about trying to clarify.
THANK YOU in advance for any help you can offer!

Boy, First of all don't panic. Without bricking you can't learn.

Alas, after restoring the stock, the three button combo brings up not clockworkmod, but "Android system recovery <3e>", which *only* allows:
reboot
apply sdcard update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Since I don't have an update.zip file that works, I can't seem to get beyond this. When I tried renaming a custom rom recovery file update.zip, I got a signature mismatch, which makes sense.

When I follow that guide, I'm linked to an updated thread which asks me to enter shell (no problem) then use the following command as first in a series:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system
that results in "mount: operation not permitted".
Basically, having (regrettably) tried to to start from scratch by reflashing stock, I keep running into these permission snags.
Seems like if I could get to the CWM recovery screen, or figure out a way to trick the stock recovery screen into accepting a different update.zip, I'd be OK.
Then again, perhaps that's making things too complicated?
TIA once again!
Also, this looks like it might work, but I can't seem to get the validation email necessary to validate a board membership, which appears necessary to download the Quick Boot file.

[Q] Why do I need fastboot?

Hi All -
New to this phone obviously (RAZR MAXX). Trying to get a grasp on it, as it's way more complicated than HTC and Samsung phones. I've rooted and installed 100s of custom ROMs with those brands before. This is my 1st Motorola since the Motorola V120c if anyone is old enough to remember that dinosaur. On nTelos' network nonetheless.
I have some questions that I would like answered and I hope someone will do me the honor as the content is really sporadic.
What is Fastboot for this device, what does it do?
Safestrap & Bootstrap? What's the difference? Which is better?
Can I flash ROMS through CWM like I have in the past?
What purpose does RSD Lite serve other than to flash Fasboot files?
Why would I want to flash fastboot? (Redundant question I think)
Thanks to anyone that takes the time to help me out.
I rooted and flash the crap out of my last phone which was Samsung. This phone seems really complex. I'm really on my toes, don't want to brick my phone. But I do want to root to get rid of the bloatware and test out some roms. The stock OS is laggy at times.
Honestly I really like the Stock OS as is. It does seem laggy at times, but nothing worse than I've run into on HTC or Samsung phones.
HTC Sense UI was/is terrible since it's so bloated and Samsung couldn't make a GPS radio capable of locating a mall let alone provide directions to anywhere. Terrible phones.
So far this phone is awesome, really bought it for the battery life honestly.
I too would like to DELETE the garbage that Verizon has installed on this thing. In terms of bloat, Verizon takes it to a whole new level. Just wow.
I'm in the same boat. Only had the phone for 2 days so far. I've already rooted it, but haven't gone any farther. But in some of my reading, I thought I saw that removing the bloatware can cause OTA updates to not happen. Hopefully someone can shed some more light on that issue.

I rooted mine 5 mins after activating it haha. As far a bloat, just use titanium pro and freeze it. Very simple. I froze around 35 apps and haven't had any issues associated w it. Should an ota come I should be prompted still. Just unfreeze all apps. Accept ota, reroot. If it breaks root completly then eventually it will get root again. I actually Ind, e system to run very well but honestly have no idea how just stock runs as I froze these apps instantly. I did not safe strap or bootstrap but I had previous knowledge of things I should be able to freeze and not and I figured it out myself
I find this phone so easy. There YouTube videos on everything.
To Get bootstrap, all you need to do is press one button, this phone has to be the easiest I've been on. The only people that struggle are the desperate ones that cba to search the forums And YouTube

- Fastboot: its just the stock bootloader, can flash moto updates/factory reset/wipe cache. it also lets you into AP fastboot, which is where u recover stock with rsd.
- Safestrap/bootstrap: bootstrap is currently our only way of CWM on the gsm phones, i understand safestrap is pretty much like dualbooting except its not(only its not completely compatible with gsm)
- can you flash with cwm: YES!
- another purpose for rsd: i have only used it for recovering after ics, so idk.
- why flash a fastboot image?: if you mess up badly or get a bootloop you can recover back to stock

removing bloatware will cause you to be unable to get ota's (freezing and then unfreezing with TiB before ota update works fine, as long as you don't uninstall).
but i think its enough to just flash a fastboot with rsd (fully return to stock), then you can get the ota

I'm afraid I deleted one app before I was aware of this. TiB shows that I made a backup of it, but doesn't give me the option to restore it. Guess I'm screwed.
hehe, probably not
did you make a cwm backup prior to uninstalling the app(s)?
then you could just restore that
if not the titanium backup file should be on your internal sdcard in /mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup as a gzipped .apk with a kinda cryptic filename
you could try ungzipping it and installing with a file explorer.
or you could just backup with cwm and flash the correct fastbootimage for your phone from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362956
usind rsd lite
and that should do it
but why not just flash a fastboot and isntall arctic 3.0.5?

Well, as I said, I only got the phone Saturday, and I work weekends.
But I've got an issue hooking up to my work email account. I was unable to get it working on my Touchpad using CM7 or CM9. I originally bought a Galaxy Nexus and had no luck with that either, thus I bought the Razr. I still can't get the native apps to work, but at least Touchdown semi-works (no Activesync). So I'm actually a little gun shy about trying new things.

Does that mean that we can't use ROM Manager or do we just need to use Bootstrap to install CWM and than use ROM Manager like we otherwise would? I got used to that app on my old phone.
I got a GSM RAZR and I have just rooted, the root script pushed in my phone some app called Bionic Bootstrapper, which gives me options Bootstrap Recovery and Reboot Recovery, what does each of them do? I don't plan on changing ROMs for now, but I definitely need to be able to recover the system.
It appears there isn't any real root on this device since the bootloader is locked. Samsung and HTC devices have their BLs unlocked so it's easier to make a permanent Recovery that will persist on reboot. I'm speculating of course, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Reboot recovery should reboot the phone to a ClockworkMod style "DOS" menu that allows you to preform functions like Back up, install zip files or even a new ROM.
When I did it, it rebooted a triangle and exclamation point, with an android guy on it. I was worried at that point. I hit the power button and the Recovery loaded instantly. Not sure if that's normal, but it's quite shakey compared to other devices out there.
I love this phone, so don't me wrong. It's just going to take some getting used to.
i dont think all of rom managers functions will work :/
bootstrap recovery: installs recovery (you only have to do this once)
reboot recovery: reboots your phone into cwm
the thing is the bootloader is locked, so we cant put cwm into the stock fastboot.
there is however a little workaround made by J.Y.Daddy that starts cwm everytime you boot, but this is installed in your rom, not in the stock fastboot, so you have to reinstall it when you flash a new rom :/

Is there some way to otherwise boot into CWM enviroment, some combination of keys or something like on other phones? Not much use for CWM if you brick your phone and can't boot into it. Also, is installed CWM not going to cause a problem for regular OTA updates and do we need to reinstall it afterwards?
From what I understood, Motorola has put some sort of recovery environment on this phone already, but I don't know what it can be used for.
And I have GSM version, bootloader is not locked, so I don't have to worry about that.

there's a workaround by J.Y.Darry that makes it boot into cwm on every boot.
there is no keycombo for cwm booting. but you can boot into fastboot with both volumekeys + power
where you can go into stock "recovery" and AP fastboot
you will use AP fastboot in combination with RSD lite to flash back to stock if u mess up, there are also more options in fastboot, but i have never used them.

you will use cwm to flash custom roms and make backups
then if you mess up and want to recover a backup you have to
- set phone in ap fastboot mode
- connect razr to computer
- use rsd lite(or an alternative flashtool) to flash the fastbootfile for your phone
- root and install bootstrapper
- reboot into cwm and restore backup
i dont think cwm in itself will cause any problems for OTA's. but if you install a custom rom its a different story
as long as you have the bootstrapper app installed on your phone, you should be able to bootstrap recovery and boot into cwm

yes they have put a rudimentary recovery in it. but you can only use it to apply updates from sdcard (to manually download ota and install), wipe and factory reset. (someone correct me if i'm wrong here)

How could I check if the bootloader is locked and what consequences does it have?

Yeah I agree with you. Rooting, flashing, CWM all 100 times easier on HTC and Samsung phones.
Don't get wrong though, I Love my RAZR Maxx, and the default OS is actually OK. Which is good because it seems that there is little to zero developement for the CDMA version of the droid RAZR/MAXX at the moment, if at all.
they're all over on the HTC/Sammy forums =D

Ain't no agruing with that, but they don't make as sweet looking and solid phones i hope motorola pull their head out of their ass soon...
Development for the cdma version is found mostly on droidrzr.com (plenty of beta/alpha ICS and some GB roms) but they are missing some parts, so we have to wait till motorola release ics be4 they will be complete.

I don't know what went wrong in my rooting process?!

I used doomloords zergrush root method on my DX2 on 2.3.4. It ran through the steps seemingly well and rebooted like it should. Upon boot there was no super user and It tested negative for root? So I tried runnin the program again, and when I "press any key" all of the steps show up instantly like it was just showing what had already been done. Then I thought I would just try runnin the unroot and all the steps were there popped up instantly too. Every time I run through the root method nothing happens now, and I don't have superuser? Uhhhh...i need to get rooted soon!!!

Read page 482 to help troubleshoot zergrush. It works great only one reboot I use it all the time. Good luck I think these tips from Ash will vet you there.
I highly doubt it makes a difference but, I used Zergrush on 2.3.5 and it worked flawlessly. On 2.3.4 I used Motorola One Click Root and it worked fine. If it gives you a hard time still and you want to try what I did, let me know. I think I still have the files saved somewhere.

let's see if I can work magic again
zergrush works perfectly well with rooting,2.3.4 AS WELL AS 2.3.5
so since you got thru the whole script and it didn't error on ya, I'm thinking you may have forgot to check the unknown sources box in settings>applications on you x2
try this
first turn it on(while your in there, might as well give the debugging setting a toggle off/on, make sure debugging is ON before exiting and starting zergrush)
try the script again
if it hits through the script with no errors but you still don't see superuser
then go into the play store, install superuser , AND get a busybox installer and see if you can manually install that way
then reboot and see if you can use a root capable app
let me know if this works if you try it please

How did i forget to try that?
Lol, I GOT ROOOTTTTEEEEEED!!!
But i noticed during the root script (by the way i used zergrush v4) is said something along the lines of:
not enough space in /system/
freeing up space in /system/ by removing google maps
and upon reboot, i still had my icon but when i clicked on it is just kept saying loading for an extremely long time... so i started deleting all the apps i never use. then i got a notification that said "updated to newest version" so did zergrush just remove the updates for it to make room? then when i had freed up space i got it back? because i dont want to get into removing bloatware...or anything that could cause bricking. because i bricked my LG ally (no dev for those phones) and cant afford to lose my droid. lol, just rooted for wifi tethering! thanks ash, travis, and everyone else! but do you recommend i install CWM for safety??

I recommend installing our BSR, don't install, cwm from,ROM manager or anything
there is links floating inn or forum, check the sticky made by booked or moonshadow for correct apk
then make,a nandroid backup.
and don't worry
if you remove any bloatware apks that won't be enough to hard brick ya, if anything dies wrong from removing boat apps all you need to do is flash an,sbf and you will be back in the game
I, have yet to see a hard bricked Droid x2(vzw)
milestone x2 might be a different story tho not sure lol
but having a, nandroid backup of stock rooted will make everything even easier for ya if something goes wrong you can just restore nandroid and PRESTO you will have EVERYTHING back to EXACTLY how it was when you created said nandroid trust me on that one, you wont regret having a nandroid backup available

Flash back from 4.5.145 to .141, best method?

Well, I've pretty much had it with this latest update (ATT, 4.5.145). I'd like to go back to .141 as its easily rootable. My Atrix is boot unlocked, and I have no interest in the custom ROMs. I dont have squat on the phone I need to keep, so I can blow the whole thing away as needed. I have the latest USB drivers and RSDlite ready to go.
I located the following ROM, and downloaded it... "1FF-olympus-user-2.3.6-4.5.141-111212-release-keys-signed-ATT-US-GAS_NA_OLPSGBATTSPE_P012.sbf", appears to be the correct one.
I've been reading and reading and reading on the forums here (i.e. I've searched a lot), but theres a lot of cross-info, its hard to tell whats applicable in some situations.
So the question....
Which HowTo/Method/Guide would be most appropriate for my situation? Or is there something that would prevent this back-rev?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Never flash an SBF unless you have no other choice. Major hard brick risk.
In this section I have a stickied thread with the answers you need.
If your bootloader is still unlocked and you still have a custom recovery installed, flashing a fruit cake should work fine.

At this point, I dont have much choice. Unless some one figures out what motorola/att did with 145 to completely screw root (its beyond my abilities), I need to press forward. If I brick it, I brick it. I'll use your sticky as my guide then, seems reliable.
Bootloader is unlocked, though I've never installed a 'custom recovery'. Looks like the various fruitcakes links are unavailable for download?
What is the advantage of the fruitcake version over the version I posted?
Thanks for the guidance

The difference between what you posted (an SBF) and what I suggest (a fruit cake) is that an SBF is full stock firmware (bootloader, boot, system, radio, etc). It is the bootloader that causes the problems. Flashing an SBF is a crap shoot. You might do it 10 times without a problem, and the 11th time you hard brick your device. By hard brick I mean hard brick = your device is now a paperweight.
A fruitcake is essentially the same as a custom ROM. You are only flashing the boot and system images. This is always the best option for returning to stock.
However, you are in a different situation - uncharted waters so to speak. No one knows what to expect from 145. And since you don't have a custom recovery installed (CWM, TWRP, etc.) you can't just flash a fruit cake like you would flash a ROM. You should be able to use the fastboot method to flash the fruit cake, but again...uncharted waters.
I suggest trying the following in this order based on your current situation (options 1 and 2 assume you do in fact have an unlocked bootloader):
1) Fastboot flash a custom recovery, then try to flash the zip I posted on my rooting guide thread. If this works you will have rooted 145.
2) Fastboot flash a custom recovery, then flash the 141 fruit cake I made.
3) Fastboot flash the boot and system fruitcake images.
All the files and info you need can be found on my "Answers" thread and my rooting guide.
Do not flash an SBF until all else has failed. Let me know how things go with the above before you even consider this.
Edit:
Before you try any of the above, did you try UnlockRoot? It may work.

From what I hear, the only thing that Moto "screwed up" (I wouldn't really call it that) is that on .145 they filled up /system. That is actually trivial to resolve - delete a few apps from /system/app that you don't need/want (you can install them later if you want to, some can live happily on /data) and - this is crucial - wipe /preinstall, since that is what fills up /system. If you don't wipe /preinstall, just deleting apps from /system will only last until next boot. Or, well, you don't need to wipe /preinstall, you can just flash the rooting preinstall image.

I was able to flash CWM Recovery no problem. I was able to flash your superuser zip as well, however it did not root the system. All indicators showed it as being successful, but ultimately it was a no-go.
At that point I flashed your fruitcake 141 images, good to go there. I then applied the preinstall method, and viola, rooted again.
I am good to go, thanks to your knowledge and skills Thank you!

I tried several variations of what youre refering to, however it was to no avail.
I went as far as to delete several useless items (apps) out of the dir, the free space indicated never changed. The amount I removed was more that enough copy su in... yet, it always reports not enough space.
I tried an experiment. I renamed the 'fake' su (always zero bytes) in the bin dir to 'su.old'. Within 30 seconds, *something* renamed it back to 'su', happened right in front of my eyes in Root Explorer.
When you say 'wipe preinstall', specifically you mean?

Its sad, because the 145 update seemed like it made the phone a little snappier, and the screen was a pinch smoother.
What do you guys think about applying the CWM Zip for update 4.5.145 in my situation? Would that be safer?
Uh oh.... you guys ran away! LOL
I was able to flash the 145 update via CWM from NYG-SBXLII's handy zip file
No real problems, 145 running fine WITH root intact. Awesome
Had to blow away the recovery-from-boot.p file afterwards, and re-flash CWM Recovery, but it was all good.
