Error while flashing image. - Motorola Photon 4G

I have a MoPho with unlocked bootloader running 2.3.4 and everytime I try to flash back to my saved stock backup from any custom rom I keep getting an "error while flashing boot image" I tried to do an advanced restore and picked the files one at a time but I keep getting the same result. Can someone please help, thank you in advance...

Are you restoring using the same utility you did the nandroid backup with? Joker recovery vs twrp vs cwm recovery

Are you using a working recovery? Jokers? Twrp? Photon3? Or the ROM manager one? ROM manager version does not work.

as mentioned previously the ROM Manager one DOES NOT WORK. 5.0.2.8 DOES NOT WORK! you NEED to user Jokers, TWRP or the 5.0.2.7-photon3 recoveries ONLY. you can find the working recoveries on my site. choose which one suits you best! don't use Jokers V4 because it won't flash google apps properly.

Ok thanks a lot, I will try the two you just recommended...

I am running cm7, or rather was running cm7 coz now my phone is stuck in the boot loop limbo. Kept getting the error "com.android.phone stopped working" and I was unable to make or receive calls all day. So I thought relocking and unlocking the bootloader would do the trick but now I'm stuck on a rock and a hard place. Sssoooooo, do you have any tricks up your sleeves I could use, I would really appreciate it...

I've been able to run a hand full of fastboot commands to bring my phone back out of limbo, I am past the boot image and able to activate with the sprint network. Thank you all who took the liberty of viewing my post, I appreciate the help...

hmmm... CDMA user? or GSM? i remember that bug being around in the very early builds of CM7. are you on the latest nightly or stable release?
i might also recommend changing some build prop info (which could be causing this?) to make sure it tells the radio to operate in the correct mode. gsm or cdma. if you look for ro.telophony.default_network=? the ? should be a 4 for CDMA or a 7 for GSM. change to your liking. then reboot. this was an issue in CM9 for the longest time and this is how it was resolved. it's possible it could be the same for CM7.
another option is to of course start over. wipe the cache, data, system partitions, possibly even twice. flash cm7. twice to be safe. then gapps. twice to be safe. then give it another shot.
other than that it might be a bad download or a bad build. so try another if it doesn't work. hope this helps you!

CDMA user, for now I am able to have my phone back on, but I will probably steer away from CM7 AND perhaps try CM10. All I keep finding is an unofficial release, is this the only one there is?

there will never be any officials releases unless somehow Motorola decides they want to give us drivers/source for ICS or JB. which is never. unless we get a leak.

Flash CWM from rom manager??

Is it possible to flash CWM from rom manager for the Photon and if so which model do you select??
I had the bootstrap on my phone which was from the x2, but I'm not sure if CWM will be the same or if Atrix would be better or if I'm barking up the wrong tree lol.
Basically I flashed a theme and now I have no settings so I can't setup my BT, WiFi, or even install an app on my sd card because I can't change any settings. And I can't flash a new rom/theme without the settings.
EDIT: So I flashed the Atrix recovery from rom manager since a google search said you could and then flash another. Once I did and tried to boot into recovery it said "failed to boot 2"
Do a factory reset through bootstrap. Happened to my buddy last night after applying a theme, he had no settings.
I restored the bootstrap by using titanium backup when I hit that snag last night
Or if you have an backup, you can take the settings app from it and place it in the system apps
LMAO, and why I didn't think of that I have no idea. I've had mybackup pro since I had my Evo over a year ago and use it religiously, until now that is lmao. I just backed it up before I flashed the new theme and didn't even think of that, good looking out guys thanks.
EDIT: Anyone know of another way to flash CWM without using ADB or SDK??
EDIT no. 2: installing from backup didnt work, it prompts me to go to settings because install from unknown sources is blocked and when I try to go to it I get a Force Close.
Is it possible to just put the settings.apk in the right folder with root explorer or something of that naturr?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
That's what i did, I put the settings apk in the zip and installed it and now everything is fine. Settings looks normal but its there
How did you install though? I cant get into my settings to enable install from unknown sources to allow the install

Why can't you factory reset, and then flash the latest stock build using rsd lite? You should have everything there. Just back your apps up in titanium and restore each one after.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Even doing factory reset using ##786# I couldn't get it to detect in rsdlite using rsd mode on my photon. I found out my rsdlite was an old version and I had a hell of a time finding the newer version (even the links I found on here were broken links) Once I got that I flashed the current sbf, then went about the pudding unlock steps and got it all done.

Tried to do.....dun dun dun

Okay now that I've got your attention I'd like to address my problem. I made a back up of my stock Rom when I first rooted it, I'm trying to restore it but it keeps getting bootloops, I've only flashed two roms and that's cm10 and meanrom ics I wanna go back to complete stock but cant because I can't download ruu and I downloaded the p739373929 or what ever it was off the s on back to stock guide and ran it and dun dun dun nothing happened, it ran rebooted right back into mean Rom like wth lol... Anyone got any idea why my restore isn't working? And why it keeps getting bootloop?

I don't know why your getting boot loops, are you saying that you want to go back to stock as in unroot?

If you're son then you need to flash the kernel for what ever base you had through fastboot or use dumlock to restore the entire back up in one attempt. To use dumlock you will need a working rom

I generally stay away from dumlock on son devices but for nandroid restore its less hassle then having to download a corresponding kernel or trying to extract it

[Q] New to rooting i717

I have an AT&T i717 running ics stock rom. I installed cwm 5.0. something and was intending on installing the CM10 JellyBean rom from paranoid. It would not install from sd card. tried another rom from diff developer, same thing. I read that I needed an updated cwm so I tried to flash another, wouldnt work with the version of ODIN i had so i upgraded to v3.07, was able to flash another and then when I went to recovery it stayed in a black screen, reflashed the older version of cwm and now when I go to recovery it will show the main screen, but if I try to install or even reboot it takes the menu away and shows the symbol in the center. Am I just completely stupid? Have I missed something?

Figured it out. Cleared both cache and delvik Cache and did a factory reset. worked like a charm. thanks for the help and I hope this helps others as well.
Just for future reference, also wiping system along with wiping cache/dalvik and factory reset is good practice. Sometimes not wiping system can cause some issues.

[Q] Photon RSD error trying to go back to stock (to activate with Sprint)

Hello,
I have been researching this for a few days and am not having much luck. My mopho has been unlocked for several month and I have been trying various custom roms without issue (from Th3Bill: CM10, CM10.1, Paranoid, etc...). I am trying to restore the phone to stock so that I can activate it on a different phone line within my Sprint account. When I try and flash 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_7-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.sbf via RSD Lite I get an error after it finishes creating the image and tries to reboot the phone.
The phone shows the following:
SVF:116:1:2
Failed to boot x2004
I have installed the stock recovery and done a complete wipe via that recovery. I have tried using RSD Lite 5.3, 5.5, and 5.7, and also tried doing it on a different PC. Again, all I am after is to get the phone activated on a different phone number with Sprint. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Try one of these and get back to me

The phone had 2.3.4 on it before I unlocked it and started installing the custom ROMs. The strange thing is that it is still unlocked and I can flash custom ROMs without issue.

Thanks MarcquisDale for the help
Just wanted to update and say I was able to solve my issue. I found a backup that I had made back when I was on the stock 2.3.4, which I did not realize I had. Restoring that backup got me back to 2.3.4 stock so that I could active, while keeping my bootloader unlocked. That allowed me to active the device and then install a CM10 based ROM again. Not sure if this is something that will actually help someone else but figured I would post the update just in case.
Thanks again

I had some issues with various roms for unknown reasons, so I kept trying out new roms. Well the problem persisted, and as I was attempting to flash a new Rom, recovery just kind of failed. Whenever I attempt to enter recovery, a titled triangle with and exclamation mark and a droid figure pop up and I have to do a battery wipe. My phone still starts and runs, but I'm currently stuck on a problematic rom with no way of getting to recovery. I'm fairly new to all of this so I have no idea what's happening and I'm ultimately scared of attempting anything and messing up more. So any and all suggestions are beyond welcome.

So just install cwm multiple times..? Like install it, turn phone on, then install again if problem persists or isn't fixed immediately?
You're looking for some magical recipe that will 100% surely fix your phone. There isn't one. You will just have to play and be creative. You can report back here for more advice if needed.

Like what ravilov mentioned, its more of a trial and error process and not a 100% quick fix. Not having a computer will make things much more difficult.
I'm not looking for a magic easy route, (though it'd be nice if there was one), I'm just asking for literally any advice on the situation.
Use the android sdk 'fastboot' command to push recovery to the device via USB. This should solve your issue with a borked recovery partition.

No need for touch. If you ever damage your screen, touch recovery will make it impossible to use. Once you've flashed it with rom manager, you can download th3bill's recovery for Atrix and install over the top of it.
