Samsung > HTC currently - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Folks, before I get flamed for posting that and before a Moderator closes my thread, please read what I have to say.
I live in Atlanta, where LTE supposedly is everywhere. Or so I thought "supposedly" when I had the Evo because ever since I got it, I've only seen it connected once(I thought maybe it just wasn't available yet.)
Then I thought maybe it was my phone since people were reporting getting 4G speeds a lot in Atlanta, so I argued my way into getting another one from Sprint. Same thing. Never connected.
Then I got myself a Galaxy Nexus. The phone was great (til I broke it) and it was always connected to 4G.
(I even made a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846041)
When my brother came to visit me, I even tested his Evo LTE. Same thing.
Then I broke my Galaxy Nexus and bought a Galaxy S III. To my surprise, it also always connected to 4G.
I went to Sprint and compared it to an Evo LTE to see if that one would connect. I checked the settings to make sure LTE is on and it still wouldn't connect.
Even my 3G speeds on the Samsung devices are better.
Thus, I learned so far that Samsung's antenna's are a LOT better than HTC antenna.
(FYI, I do not work or am endorsed by Samsung in any means. Matter of fact, I think their phones feel like cheap plastic pieces of sh*t and I wish I could have my HTC again (in working condition.))
Maybe we need to pressure HTC into putting in better antennas in our phones.

Are you sure you were on LTE on the Samsung phones? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the EVOLTE is an LTE only phone and doesn't connect to Sprint's legacy 'faux-g' hspa network while I believe the Sammy phones do. My first Samsung phone was the intercept ( a miserable failure) and my second was the nexus s 4g(terrible reception but great phone). I've had much better luck with HTC phones when it comes to hardware.
I've only been to ATL once on a business trip and managed to connect to LTE before Sprint officially launched it so I was impressed
Edit: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/HTC-EVO-4G-LTE,Samsung-Galaxy-S-III/phones/7019,6330
^Here is a decent source to prove it. I blame Sprint for being d***headed enough to insist on having an exclusive version of the One-X with features that didn't leave enough room for all the radios we need. They should have just taken the One-X as it was intended by HTC. Personally there us no 4g in my area at all so the Evo works fine picking up 3g

I see where you're coming from but yes these are both LTE.
Galaxy Nexus was Sprint's first LTE phone launched, then Evo and I believe then GS3.
And the speeds I'm getting (in good areas) are 20MB plus.
At work, I get a constant 3-5MB.
So I do not think it's T-Mobile's HSPA that I'm connecting to but actual LTE.

Even if it's true, false, or up for debate, you won't get a good discussion on it here.
I foresee posts about plastic phones, pentile screens, and TouchWiz.

Well the point is that I think Sprint has a bigger hspa footprint than LTE so you may be getting hspa and then LTE when you enter its range(thus the good 20mb spots). Even if the Samsung radio is slightly better you should still be able to connect on the Evo...

I see what you're saying.
Also, I agree with the Evo should still be connecting. Not sure why it wasn't 3 Evo's at that.
(I tried all 3 different radios. Even lost my S-OFF and my Root in order to try the latest radio because I was that desperate for answers.)

Sprint doesn't have a hspa network. There are no phones that connect to Sprint’s previous 4G network (wimax) and their current 4G (LTE) network.

Yeah that's what I thought too. Isn't T-Mobile the only one left with HSPA?

And honestly, Samsung vs. HTC aside, the problem is more on the carrier than HTC... Or both I guess. I used 2 friend's One X and GS3 next to each other in hspa+ 4G and they both were very close as far as load times. The GS3 person ended up swapping in her gs3 for the One X after seeing the software difference though Sprint just forced HTC to skimp on the radios with the extra evo features jammed in.

At&t uses a hspa+ network for 4G as well as LTE.
The connection issues are well documented and have been known to Sprint since at least April.

Just be aware, on GS3 you'll still have to pay the $10 fee.
Only way you won't is if you switch to a non 4G WiMax or 4G LTE phone.

I'm honestly torn between HTC and Samsung, sometimes. I love how an HTC phone feels in my hands, nice and solid. Sense looks good but can sometimes be a performance hog. Samsung does some pretty unique stuff to their devices (multiscreen, s-pen, etc) and I like that. I hate how the whole damn thing is just a bar of plastic, just don't like what it feels like compared to HTC. But software wise, Tocuhwiz isn't that bad, IMO. It's much closer to AOSP than any other OEMs version of Android.
But if you want a good read on the upcoming struggles with Samsung's Exynos-based devices, read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922613&page=2
Start around post 16, some really good info from a CM dev. I like Samsung for always getting out their source early, but if it's broken and doesn't compile, then it doesn't matter. And if they can't help with any low level processor stuff because it's proprietary to them, they're not helping the community as much as they try to show that they are. Just my 2 cents.

Radio aside, how do you like the GS3 compared to the EVOLTE?

Don't really wanna answer cuz I think you're a POS but no, I don't.
I wish I had my Evo back sometimes.
Very solid phone. GS3 freezes. My keyboard can't keep up with my typing and I end up with words like "whuoi dasu unjhoos" (this matters to me. I text a LOT.. like 500 or so texts per day.)
The speaker phones sounds terrible.
It's durable as a cold butter stick.
Feels very plastic-y.
However pros:
Service,
More developers available for it on XDA,
Very light.

LOL!
I've actually come close to trading my EVO for a GS3 a couple times. No LTE here, so that's never factored in.
Basically 3 things have kept me from doing so:
1. People want way too much +$
2. Most that I've come across not in mint condition
3. I'm lazy
Oh, and also been trying to sell a car on CL, so haven't reposted my EVO for GS3 ad in awhile.

Doesn't most of the EVO's LTE connection problem stem from software? Bc last I heard the next ota is going to address it?
Personally, I won't have LTE for another few months at the earliest. So, it doesn't matter much to the majority of the US. Granted there are a lot of EVO users in the LTE startup cities. But does this mean a mass exodus from the EVO for 4g connectivity?
I can wait to see if an ota fixes the issues. I mean what are we gonna do, go to Verizon? Hahahaha.

Motorola Rep Says Photon Has LTE Chip!

Just got off phone with Motorola and they confirmed the Photon has a LTE chip installed! I called sprint and they said it didn't. Somebodies lying, my bet is sprint.
My guess is that the Motorola rep is confusing that for 4G in general. I highly doubt the Photon has LTE.
Now, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if it does, but I imagine that would have been in the FCC certification.

i'm too lazy to search youtube, has anyone done a teardown of this phone yet? I mean its not magic, if there is a LTE chip inside you'd see it. Granted I'm not willing to doante my phone to such a process but I mean phones break, you'd think someone who broke their Photon had to have tore it apart by now to see its guts.
I doubt they would have added an expensive piece of hardware just for the heck of it. The fact that it isn't touted as a feature to"future proof" the phone leads me to assume it isn't there.
The build.prop in system has alot of refrences to an LTE radio...but then again it has quite a few refrences to VZW as well....

The hole in that thought is the matrix is on ATT(GSM) which is different from VZW in more ways then one.
The VZW references is due to the you can roam in VZW and a possible launch of the phone on VZW.
It seems that this phone has a lot of Q's surronding the radio freq's it uses so we are going to need to find a good tear down and look to that for answers.
Ok so in case people didn't know, LTE uses sim cards for the 4G. But it can't be in the photon, sprint wont have it for some time.
My buddy at Motorola replied to me "wimax". So I guess its not LTE ready and that moto rep is misunderstanding that sprints 4g is different. After all, this is the first moto android phone on sprint

If that's the case why aren't you on Verizon?
Plug the photon in and look in device manager, it has an LTE modem period. There is no argument here, find it for yourself. Sprint will have LTE but not for awhile, as for the Photon working on it, who knows, but I am damn sure that it is capable of it. If you are asking a Sprint Rep any questions about a phone, 97.38782% of them don't know much about them, yes there are a few who actually do their homework on each and every phone they come across but that is few and far between. ( And in case you work at Sprint and you are reading this, don't take it personal, I'm just saying that most reps sell phones, they don't study them and know them inside and out) As for Motorola, who knows, it all depends on who you talk to, but I would believe one of them over a random Sprint rep who 'sells' phones for a living, being that Motorola actually built the thing.
But all you really need to do is plug it in and look for yourself.

Now that is interesting indeed
It just might have a LTE radio. Maybe Sprint's plans are starting to show up in current and future phones? Here is an excerpt:
If Sprint were to tap into Clearwire’s LTE network it wouldn’t gain any additional coverage beyond its current 4G footprint. It would gain additional capacity, but it would come at a price. Since Clearwire’s LTE wouldn’t even cover existing WiMAX markets completely, Sprint will need to deploy dual-mode WiMAX and LTE devices. That’s already a tall order for device makers, but Clearwire is using an unpaired spectrum configuration for LTE, meaning Sprint will need LTE chips not only for Clearwire’s 2.5 GHz frequencies but in a time-division duplexing (TDD) mode that no other operator uses in the U.S.

There may be some logic to this from Moto perspective...
It 4g and it a world phone...it suports cdma and gsm...
But is it also the first "4g" "world phone"? having both wimax and LTE ?(you got the sim like verzion LTE phones need)
So for Moto one hardward build for all world markets...and would also make it one hell of a development phone for google android to test everything on
Would the EVO 3d and Samsung Galaxy 2 people crap if true....
A phone with all these radios cdma, gsm, wimax and LTE would be hacker heaven
Who knows could be source of unlocked 4g issues that just the Photon seem to have ... that bootstrap has an extra radio to set up
===One other thing I recall Sprints Touch pro 2 "world phone" was not certified for GSM by FCC for US so radios were not listed on FCC doc...but it had them
Other thing in all the Photon "tear down" ive seen...ive never seen the chips because of how the lable sits in the battey compartment covers the chips...you would need to destroy the phone to see

Sprint Galaxy Nexus to Launch April 15th

I'll be waiting for the galaxy SIII.
Edit: Removed sgsIII leaked specs as they were fake
According to that site it will be launched with 3g mode on and 4g lte deactivated?
What about the wimax 4g? I assume that the nexus does not have wimax ?
I live in austin texas and we have 4g wimax but not the 4g lte.
So if I get this nexus phone Im downgrading the Data speed
The sprint 3g speed is absolutely a joke here in austin compared to att/tmobil/verizon.
We barely have descent wimax coverage, there is no way I am gonna be stuck 0n sprints lousy 3g full time. And not to mention wating for sprint to have lte runing in this city.

The only reason I will eventually move to LTE (I'm already currently in a WiMAX area) is for the improved speeds and the lower frequencies. Lower frequency radio waves will better penetrate thick walls (like concrete) and will reduce how much battery it uses. Therefore, LTE is overall more stable than WiMAX technology.

Lower frequency radio waves will better penetrate thick walls (like concrete) and will reduce how much battery it uses. Therefore, LTE is overall more stable than WiMAX technology.

The big issue I see is a big price jump once lte is turned on. There is some serious traffic control that lte has that wimax doesn't. When they can truly see what being used and the rate of consumption, bye bye unlimited.

though I do think there will be a day when unlimited will be no more, i don't think it will be anytime soon, for 2 reason, 1 the premium data fee ($10) we all pay according to dan hasse is the reason we don't have tier data plans already, so if they switched they can't charge that anymore and 2 sprint uses it too much to advertise with, and is a reason so many of the customers are staying... if they lose that they will lose A LOT of customers...
i never use 4g and i can get it almost all most all the time.. i use 3g cause its fast enough for me.. when i have used 4g in the past it just drains my battery to quick.. its crazy cause some people would love to get 4g and i have it and could care less.. lol i wish i could give it away!!!! to someone that would use it.. u kno..

I only get to use it if I go to Atlanta or I go up north to Michigan
I am in no hurry to upgrade. I live in a small city about an hour north of Atlanta. My little city of 30k has WiMax and is set to get LTE the first round, but I get 4G inside my apartment and downtown. While I don't get LTE speeds, I do get around 7-8mb. And I'm okay with that till the next round of LTE phones come out. WiMax isn't going anywhere anytime soon for those of us that have it.

I'm sorry that's the case. As a frequent traveler I am in almost always in Wimax coverage and have been very satisfied for the most part. However, thinking I'm hot s*?t pulling down 10mgbs on my couch always gets me into trouble as my buddy ( who is smartphone illiterate) pulls down 30 on his razr max. Yea at those speeds its basically just a pi$$ingcontest, but with almost 24 months on the competition you have to feel dissapointed in the way Wimax was.handled.

What is your EVO 4G LTE 3G speed?

So, for all of those lucky enough to receive the new EVO, what is your 3G speed. Post your speedtest screenshots and let us know what city you are in.
For the record, I didn't get one. :'(

Some tests I ran between my 3D and LTE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26511061&postcount=2
I'd really like to see a comparison of WiMax speeds versus the 3G speeds of the LTEVO. I'm sure WiMax will still be faster, but I'm curious to see by how much.
Since I'm keeping my OG activated (for WiMax) until LTE is active in my area, it would be nice if the numbers were close enough for me to avoid having to carry around two phones for several months .
I'll post a speed test shortly

Wow. That's ridiculous. I've read it is faster on 3G than other phones (namely the 3D), but I wonder if most zones will see that much improvement. Seems hard to believe.

3G for me on the LTE is between 500-700kbps while the unofficial 4G (not on Sprints map but shows on Clear's and connects as Sprint). I just ran my 3D on WiMax to Speedtest it. In my house with 1 bar of 4G and I got 5490kbps down. So you will probably want to carry 2 phones for a bit
I've done three speedtests and average 280 kbps down and 350 up here in Minneapolis with 1-3 bars in my apartment building.
Edit: though I did just get this...
My OG EVO, EVO 3D, and Epic 4G Touch have all had atrocious 3G speeds. Way below other carriers. This phone appears to have great 3G speeds (relatively), and my girlfriend's Sprint iPhone 4S also gets pretty good 3G speeds. I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint purposely throttles data from certain devices and allocates more data to others. Makes sense that they would want iPhone uses to have decent data, they don't have a 4G option. Similar to the EVO LTE, no LTE in the immediate future for most.
I bring this up because it's common knowledge that Sprint's 3G is absolutely garbage, when it fact it could be Sprint purposely throttling data. I wonder what would happen if they just opened up the pipes even to everyone.
Once NetworkVision upgrades are done all this will be moot....not worth fretting over now...
Comparing WiMax to the 3G speed is a pointless task as well, imho....different animals all together; and no phone is going to be faster than the another on 3G really in areas where the problem is capacity ridden issues...In areas its not, then you can see benefit/differences due to different antennae tech and radios used...

Please don't dismiss this as not important, having usable 3g speeds until network vision comes out is important to many of us.We want this phone to succeed in all ways.
I haven't been able to test my speeds yet as it is taking forever (more than an hour so far) to download 6 apps over 3g. I screwed up and didn't test my OG Evo before I deactivated it, but it sure seems like the new lte Evo is a lot slower so far. I will update after it finally gets the speed test app downloaded.

Read what I wrote again...don't think u grasped what i was saying really....
Wasn't dismissing the importance of 3G speed as much as caring about the difference b/w what you got on your 3D and what you get now with the LTE...like I said no matter what phone you have the capacity troubled areas will continue to get slow speeds until NetworkVision is deployed in your area...Also its highly unlikely you will see a phone released that will get half the speed of its predecessor over 3G so there should be no worry really...b/c 90% any slow speed issues experienced here will be network related issues and not the phone...

LTE connection trouble

Having issues connecting to LTE, have to toggle airplane mode on/off for it to switch back into 4g? anyone know any workarounds or anything
You may get more responses if you gave some back ground info. Sense or aosp rom. Was it working before? Does it work fine for a friend?
It may be your phone or maybe you are on a fringe area.

Sorry am on meanbean 3.5. We just got LTE here where I am don't really know anyone in the area. Everytime I reach the LTE area where I know it is I have to toggle airplane mode to connect to the LTE. Am also on the latest firmware and radios

These are known issues. The current stock ROM has provided some help but really depends on your area. If you are in a new or spotty LTE area you are likely to face this for a while. I still have this issue in the Baltimore and D.C.markets.

Work around is to get a Samsung Galaxy. I abandoned my EVO LTE for a Note 2. You don't see these LTE network problem related posts for the Galaxy S3 or Note 2
Are you on latest radios and PRL? And have you done a profile update?

I'm in the same boat as you brother. Since launch day I've had issues like this even before the LTE came to my area. I actually just had to toggle airplane mode a few minutes ago. The mobile data toggle would be grayed out and eventually say disconnected and the mobile data toggle would be stuck and you get no response when pressed. The only way to get it back on is to toggle airplane mode like you said. I am on 3.16 with everything on the latest firmware/etc and rocking Viper 3.1.0. Its not ROM related I've had this problem for a while and on multiple ROMs. Trust me if I could get an S3 I would in a heartbeat...

I'd suggest waiting a little while and see if the problem persists once the area is finished with its LTE build out. If the problem doesn't resolve itself, then you should take it to a Sprint store and show them how it's behaving. They should offer you a replacement if other phones aren't doing the same thing as yours in that area.
Many people say it's a Evo LTE issue, but that just is NOT the case with every Evo LTE. I for one never have to toggle airplane mode or do anything at all. I constantly have LTE at my house and in my surrounding city. When I go between LTE and 3G areas, my data has no problems whatsoever jumping between those connections instantly.

Couple problems with that... I have no Sprint rip off insurance and I'm full blown rooted and customized. The guy in the OP could probably because he just purchased his but I'm pretty sure I'm screwed. Also it only happens maybe every other day its not a constant problem and I'm 100% sure if I took it to my Sprint store they will blame it on being rooted or tell me to screw myself because I don't have TEP.
Sent from my Blazing fast LTEvo!
Haha it just happened again right after I said it rarely happens twice in 1 day. The first picture is the mobile data being stuck/grayed out and unresponsive if touched then the 2nd picture is after cycling airplane mode.
Sent from my Blazing fast LTEvo!
After 3 evo lte replacements with same lte connection problem you have op, I decided to get a note 2 out right. I still have the evo and swap activation between both every now and then. I can tell you that the evo drops lte connection while the note 2 lte connection is just solid in the exact same area.

Insurance doesn't matter. The phone has a 1 year manufacturer warranty, and hasn't been out for a year yet. Also, if you're in contact, they'll want you to stay so they'll want your phone to be working properly.

Unlocking only matters if you're shipping the phone to HTC. Sprint could care less if you're dev unlocked or s-off. They can't blame it in the towers if you're in store and a GS3 or Note 2 that's on display isn't having the same issue as yours is.

HAHAHAHAHA yeah i have no insurance i saw no point to it as the min i got it home (with in a week of launch) it was dev-unlocked rooted and re rommed. i guess i will have to try going into the sprint store and seeing if they can do anything, however i really do love this phone but am so disappointed in the LTE/3G switching problem. Now i am also having issues downloading from the market on LTE, whenever i go to start a Download it just sits at waiting for network.....

I really do love this phone also. The build quality is outstanding. I hope the S3 is as good of a phone as people say. Its amazing how much more $ you could get for an S3 right now vs. The EVO LTE. I guess that speaks for itself on the quality of the S3. I'm so psyched to practically getting an upgrade and won't have to deal with this stupid problem for another year until my upgrade.

Doesn't really speak for quality as much as popularity/being well known. On ebay, an iphone 4 sells for as much, or more, compared to an Evo LTE. Kinda like a white Evo LTE sells for more than a black one. Same phone and quality, just that the white one is more popular.
