Photon bad esn - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello there guys
Theres a question i would like to be answer , i bought a photon off ebay with bad esn , that means i cannot activate it on sprint , thats alright cause i use gsm i live outside the usa , but i might leave to the states in a few months , so my question is , can i use the kddi radio to activate it on At&t ?
Cause esn = imei but on cdma am i right?

The KDDI radio will allow you GSM usage here in the US, correct, but to flash that radio onto the device you're going to have to still be on Android 2.3.4, with an unlocked bootloader as well (at least that's my understanding - I was lucky enough to get a 2.3.4 Photon a few days ago, and I'm avoiding 2.3.5 at all costs meaning the OTA).
As far as "activation" that's not required since the Photon is already unlocked for world operation.
Once you start using the KDDI radio (if you can use it), then you shouldn't have any issues with any GSM carrier here in the US. I currently use mine with T-Mobile prepaid because T-Mobile just turned on their 3G 1900 MHz band here in Vegas about 2 weeks ago and it works great so far.

So there shouldn't be any problems with esn and so ?

If I understand correctly, your ESN number should not matter at all for GSM networks. Your phone and account information are linked to your SIM card. At least that's how I understand it. I believe ESN numbers only pertain to CDMA networks.

Alright then sounds good to me , gonna keep my photon for a while with all this leaking happening *thats what she said*

The ESN is irrelevant for use with GSM networks, it's not read, it's not noted, it's not used at all - this is one particular reason why some "global" phones are popular in the used smartphone markets: if the owner didn't pay the bill on such a phone with the original carrier (Sprint, Verizon, aka CDMA carriers) they typically - but not always - have the option of potentially being able to use the device(s) with GSM capability.
But that's also the reason such devices when sold here in the US almost always lock out the GSM functionality here in the US so, thankfully in some instances it's possible to open or "unlock" that feature - and I don't mean carrier unlock since global phones almost always are unlocked from the factory anyway.
The Droid Bionic I recently had is easily "unlocked" for GSM use just by changing a few characters in the NVFlash; the Photon just requires flashing that KDDI radio but of course you have to have an unlocked bootloader to get that done so...
Either way, if you're on 2.3.4 and you can do the necessary stuff to get that KDDI radio on there, you'll be good to go here in the US for the GSM networks, and then you can revert back if needed too.

Yeah the photon i got was on 2.3.4 , i already unlocked the bootloader and been messing around with roms and stuff & i already had the kddi radio but i just had that doubt about it :]
Another thing , to get a simcard with unlimited data for smartphones on at&t , how much would that be ?

There's just no such thing for AT&T, or any provider for that matter. T-Mobile would be your best bet, they have prepaid service that's "unlimited" and you pay by the day, it's $3 and there really are no limitations that I've ever noted - that's what I currently use and it's fairly worthwhile since I don't actually want full blown monthly service or any contracts.
Also, in the US anybody that advertises "unlimited" is basically lying unless you do pay out the nose for it. T-Mobile does have a $30/monthly "true" unlimited plan now but they don't have it for any prepaid stuff, so that means a) you have to set up a 2 year contract and b) you have to sign up for a regular phone plan on top of the $30 so you'd be looking at the 2 year commitment and about $80 a month so, that's not gonna work either.
The T-Mobile $3/day prepaid thing would do great for you if you're just going to be here on a visit or something. If you intend to actually move here permanently and you want something decent, that T-Mobile $30/monthly unlimited on contract would most likely be the best overall right now and who knows when they may change it. It works for 4G as well but unfortunately there's no 4G service with the Photon with that unlocked bootloader and replacement radio.

Alright let see if i got this
A)So i cant just get the 30/monthly plan from T-mobile without signing up for a regular phone plan?
B)how does the prepaid service for data works? Like how you pay the 3 bucks a day
C)if i get T-mobile as my phone provider for data and so , im gonna get 3G with my photon?
Thanks for being around and answering my questions
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app

A) Correct, because the $30/unlimited data plan must be tied to a regular calling plan aka you get locked into a contract.
B) You stop by a T-Mobile store or direct reseller and get the prepaid SIM card, put money on it (minimum $10) and then if you use your device with the SIM card it'll start the clock running in whatever time zone you happen to be in, the $3 is good till midnight in that time zone so it's best to try and use it just after midnight to get the most time possible. If you don't use it then you don't pay, basically (keep the phone in airplane mode till you actually require it, that sort of thing).
C) T-Mobile just starting rolling out service in the 1900 MHz GSM frequency band a few weeks ago here in the US - until the day the iPhone 5 came out T-Mobile did not offer 1900 MHz service anywhere in the US and using a device like the Photon would limit you to 2G/EDGE service and speeds.
However, the day the iPhone 5 was released was the first day T-Mobile enabled their 1900 MHz coverage for 3G/4G service in the US, and I happen to be lucky enough to have gotten it here in Las Vegas since this was the first city in the entire country to get that service turned on. It's spreading fast, of course, and you can go to this website:
http://www.airportal.de/
and see where T-Mobile is finally offering 3G service (and 4G as well) on non-T-Mobile devices like our Photon, or the Atrix 4G or Atrix 2, etc. I added a few reception reports for Las Vegas as soon as it went live here and now it's popping up all over the US as the rollout for 1900 MHz for T-Mobile spreads. They're doing it for several reasons but one big one is they're hoping to attract a lot of customers with unlocked GSM devices like the older iPhones to T-Mobile.
It's a smart move on their part.

Alright nice , i went to that webpage you just gave me and new york got 3G services so woohoo
About the T-mobile prepaid plan , so alright i bought my simcard with 10$ on it , got it at 9 am in the morning , once i activate my data on my photon , 3 bucks will be deducted from my balance until that day is over ?
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app

Pretty much, yep, $3 per 24 hour period max - like I mentioned already, your best bet it to keep the phone in airplane mode when it's not in use, and turn that mode off just after midnight in whatever time zone you happen to be in to get the most use. That "day" will end at midnight regardless so, if you don't care or it's not a big deal then don't bother with it - as each new "day" begins it'll just deduct the $3 from the balance on the account till it's out or there isn't enough to refill the day's charge. When you "activate" a day's charge, it's not good for 24 hours from the time you activate it, it's good till midnight in that time zone so, if you enabled it at 11PM you'd only get about 59 minutes of service for the $3... hope that makes sense.
Been using it for a while now, it works fine for me and my purposes, doesn't cost an arm and a leg and there's no practical limit on me given the time I use it. There are a ton of services like Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, and NET10 that say "$50/month unlimited" or $45 or whatever and you have to avoid them because their terms of service has some very tricky fine print in it. Using those services, technically if you fire up iHeartRadio or Pandora or any kind of streaming service at all they can and have been known to just literally kill your service.
Pisses me off to no end when a company puts "unlimited" in their plans and yet then turns around and slaps limitations on your as to how you can use the service.
T-Mobile doesn't do that: it's $3/day and I can do whatever I want with that bandwidth and time. Hell, I even tethered my Photon a few days ago when my Cox cable connection crapped out and I leeched about 7GB of data in a few hours (I live across the street from a T-Mobile tower so I pull about 10Mbps with great stability). No problems doing that so it's a fallback for me if needed.

Ohhh i think i got the whole "midnight data' thing
So its 11PM and i decide to turn on my data , as soon as i do this , 3 bucks are deducted and i got 59 mins of data , cause when i get to 12am its a "new" day , and 3 more bucks will get deducted if i keep using data , am i right?
Those simcard only work for data ? Or they come with a number also?
And when i start using data , it just runs out even thought im not using it right?
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app

Correct on the midnight thing; soon as the clock rolls over to 12:01AM in the time zone you're in, that's another $3 deducted from the balance, good till 12:00AM 23 hours and 59 odd minutes later.
T-Mobile prepaid SIM cards have a number, it's full prepaid phone service for $3/day. Voice, text (SMS/MMS), data, all inclusive.
Not sure what you mean by the running out - if you mean at midnight does it stop, I can't say for sure, never been in the middle of some big download before the midnight rollover, but I'd guess that yes it would stop at that point. Might have to try that sometime if I intend to use the account two days in a row and see if it "rolls over" through the midnight cutoff.

Nevermind on the running out lol , so you dont have to make a call or txt a number to t-mobile to get data running? , just activate data and automatically data starts running ?
Btw , the apn's just shows up in the phone right?

Because after 10 months that 40 turns into 400 and we just paid for the subsidy that ppl are paying for every month for 24 months(40 * 24 = $960) In comparison, after 24 months you get paid $260 for using it on a different network. Sub par service is a matter of opinion...no need to be rude about it, some ppl prefer a frugal alternative.
I guess the thought is that you could buy a cheaper device, and get just as good performance out of it because on Cricket you will never, ever, see any of the 4G speeds that we see.
This thing gets downloads that are consistently as fast as my Home Comcast (15mbps). I have seen some speeds that are double 30+mbps.
I guess what the other poster is thinking is that you could buy a droid 2 or a droid X and basically get the same results. Outside of the 4G LTE speeds, this device is nothing more than a MT4G or Desire HD (same internals). You wouldn't have to spend the extra money for a 4G phone that you will never utilize.
I thought that cricket was signing up for Lightsquared's LTE service? Which I would assume would be the same 700 Mhz our devices run on? I could be wrong, but if cricket did this it seems like it wouldn't be a terrible deal and as op said, he would still save money and actually be able to utilize the service. I doubt they would have the coverage we will, but don't denigrate the dude. He did nothing wrong asked a relevant question. Sorry, this was more directed at two_cents.
I have no idea what frequency Cricket would use, but keep in mind that metroPCS has 4G LTE as well and it is not at all compatible with Verizon 4G LTE. So it may be that the carriers try to distinguish themselves in the near future (especially from value based carriers) based on their phones not being compatible with other networks.
This would have the effect of making you go with one of the Big 3(?) carriers if you wanted a quality smartphone, or pick an inferior or entry level device and go with a prepaid carrier.
Yeah, I know metro's is different, but I was thinking that, which I could be remembering wrong, that LS's LTE service was going to be the same 700mhz. Like I said, I could be wrong. This is just what I vaguely remember.
When cricket starts using sim cards to register devices

Chips in Crickets?
Been an At&t user since forever. Service is good enough in Savannah and the job pays for it so I haven't had an argument to switch. So, SIM cards in phones have always been the norm. Could switch out my Nokia, Palm, iPhone whenever.
So forgive my ignorance when I ask what the significance of sims appearing in Cricket phones to being able to use the Thunderbolt? I currently use a Huawei on Cricket to play with and it doesn't have a sim. I've seen a Droid X also on Cricket and I don't know whether it has a sim or not.
Personally I wouldnt use a DX or TB on Cricket but for $55 a month (unlimited everything) it's an attractive offer.
Btw, the Huawei is Z4 rooted and has 2.2.1, which ruins the Wifi. But Wifi tethering works great. About 1mb u/d, but worthwhile. My iP4 gets 3+mb down and 1+mb up on 3G even with MyWi. When 4G LTE comes here with big red then I'll probably switch. I looking forward to a 4.3 screen and 2.3GB

I think you are mixing up Cricket for Metro PCS.
also the 700Mhz band is verizons if I am not mistaken, so the band will be different for Lightsquared's LTE unless them roam on verizons network.
No, I know metro has their own LTE service, that is not on the same bandwidth ours. Reading further into the lightsquared's frequency range they are on three bands. 1.4 1.6 and 2.0. So, yes I was wrong about it about the TB working on crickets network if they partnered with LS, but I wasn't talking about MPCS. I thought that I had saw where LS was running on the 700 mhz band with VZW. Not sure where I pulled that one out of thin air from, because apparently I was way off. Here's where I got my new info.http://www.dailywireless.org/2010/07/20/lightsquared-announces-lte-network/
MPCS runs on the 1700 mhz band.

Since no one has yet answer the original question... I'm a professional cell phone tech normally all Verizon phones can be flashed to cricket HOWEVER Verizon has decided to use identification cards similar to Sim cards for their service starting with the thunderbolt and all future Verizon 4g phones. I have yet to attempt to flash a thunderbolt I will try Monday however I'm fairly confident without the id card it will not work on cricket. The card is what stores registration info for the network now VERY similar to a Sim. I'm doubting a flash will work but I will repost tomorrow with my results.

Your correct there is no way to load a .prl on the phone without a sim unless theres another way. For the rest of the off topic posts you pay for what you get
Yeah, the SIM card makes this impossible at the moment.
possibly
Its possible because cricket will be getting 4G LTE sometime at the end of this year or early next. But it also depends if it works the same as Verizon's.
The Thunderbolt has officially been flashed to cricket with Talk and Text and hopefully data to come. I flashed it yesterday and i can make and recieve calls and texts atm so wish me luck to get data working

[Q] AT&T thinks my sister's vibrant is an iPhone

I bought a vibrant yesterday from craigslist and unlocked it so my sister could use it on AT&T with $15 unlimited data. All was going well until this morning when she got this text message, "AT&T Free Msg: Did you know a data plan is required for your iphone? We have added an appropriate data plan for your iphone. Learn more at att.com/iphoneplans."
It upgraded her plan to the $25 2gb plan automatically and won't let me downgrade the plan. On mywireless it calls the plan a datapro iphone plan but still displays the phone as unknown.
Has anyone else had this problem? I thought this phone would be safe from imei sweeps.
Not yet, but I have a feeling that it is coming sooner than later.
I think I'm just going to call cs, tell them the problem, give them the vibrants imei and hope for the best. I really hope they aren't using some kind of deep packet analysis to find out how she's using the phone.
They probably are--money is everything to these companies, and they will do whatever they can to make more of it.
Funny! Now we know who we'll be paying our bills to

What did you tell att to get on your plan? did you tell them you had a vibrant (or sgh-t959) or did you use an ATT dumbphone first?
In my attempt, I took her sim out of her iPhone 3G (200mb data plan) put it in an LG Xenon (dumb phone) called customer service and had them change the plan to the $15 unlimited for dumb phones, waited 15 minutes, put the sim in the unlocked vibrant.
This worked just fine when I did it with a couple of unlocked mytouch 3g's.
Should I have waited longer before switching phones or should I have just told them I have a vibrant (or SGH-t959).
Either way you should be able to get them to take it off due to the fact that you shouldn't be pulling 3g with the vibrant. Yeah you might get it once in a while but probably not consistently.

It gets 3g consistently and works really well in my area, which might be part of the problem. I backed it off to edge (at least for a few days). You probably live in an 850mhz service area. The vibrant only supports 1900mhz hspa but does support 850mhz edge. I get great 3g speeds with the vibrant 1000~2000kbps.

You can activate it on cricket service, I've done one and it works pretty well. Of course you will only get 3g instead of 4g as Cricket does not have 4g yet. I had everything working except incoming calls would not ring through, still working on it. However, texting, mms, web, apps, and google voice worked great. I could get incoming and outgoing calls through google voice just fine.

How much does cricket service cost a month?
Sent from my PG41200 using xda premium
Cricket has an android plan for their smart phones which gives you unlimited talk/text/data for $55 per month. That is the method I used. Their 3g is pretty decent where I'm at, but like most carriers Cricket will throttle you if you exceed your data usage. I have not been throttled yet, but I do not use an awful lot of data. I believe there is a way to use the $45 per month plan which requires a few more steps flashing the View, but I have not tried it and I am not sure how reliable it would be.
I saw a program called flash to talk android studio that might let you do it. Thing is , its $50 for the program and $5 each time you use it. I think a lot of stores use it to flash android phones between carriers. If its worth it to you, check it out.

I currently use mine on boostmobile for 3g and i use clearwire for 4g. did a few things that im sure i cant speak of here. but yes you can put it on other carrier's. where i am at cricket/metro doesnt work so i could not go that route otherwise i may have. I use boostmobile because 4g can be spotty sometimes and the 3g is a good backup anywhere 4g doesnt kick in. i had it on sprint but for 1gig of data my monthly was coming in at like 50 with insurance and taxes and no 4g...just pathetic. my alternative gives me pay as you go like 11 bucks a month flat no taxes unlimited 3g/text/no phone at least the normal way but till that is figured out i'm happy using groove ip with google since my data is always on no need to spend talk minutes just use data for talk hence why it costs .35cents a day. and as for 4g well i'm on an older clear plan and i share it with my hotspot(switching back through the login page pretty easy) again i'm not explaining how to do it as in many places its not allowed to talk of the method's tut, i'm just sharing that there are ways. If I was able to use it on other carriers that worked in my area i would or if sprint wouldnt try and be a ripoff and give a decent plan a realistic plan i would just stick with them.

Who is running on a 3g unlimited plan.

The guy in the att store never switched my unlimited plan from a 3g unlimited to 4g unlimited. The last couple days my data has been so slow. Facebook loads and stuff but xda app sometimes takes forever to load like im on Edge or something. If i go into the browser and go to www.google.com sometimes it just wont load. Phone shows 4 bars of 3g and the lines are indicating data being sent but it never loads. 3g in my area was super fast with my iphone. Speedtest shows 1mbit at first and drops down to like. .87mbit by the time the test is done.
Any ideas?

Uh, either go back to the store and have them switch you to the 4G unlimited, or log into your account online and switch it, or call up customer service and have them switch it. The sales rep you bought it from is stupid for not doing so when you bought it. My guess as to why you are getting such slow speeds is that you are getting throttled. How much data do you normally use/have you used this bill cycle? If you are getting throttled, then switching to the new LTE unlimited plan should reset your throttling hopefully, but as soon as you reach around 2gb of data, expect to be throttled again.

Current billing cycle only shows 1345mb. So i shouldnt be getting throttled. The data does work though most of the time. So. I still need to switch it to the 4g? I dont know much about the service side of Att. I just figured if it worked it was fine.

Not only switch to LTE but if you don't have one already, you'll need an LTE SIM card as well.

Okay. I looked at my sim and the last two digits on the sim is 27. No markings on it at all. Just blue and white. Doesnt even say 3g or anything like my old one did. I guess i didnt really bother asking the guy cause i figured he would know, and we dont have 4g around here anyways.

It would still be good to make sure you have the LTE sim card, and that you get upgraded to the LTE unlimited plan, even if you don't have 4G yet. It will still allow you to use 3G just fine.
I have a 3G unlimited plan and they tried to get me to change to a 4G plan but says they have no unlimited, ugh, come to find out all I had to do was get a LTE sim card & the store rep added the 4G code and voila magic, 4G without needing to change my plan
There is no such thing as a LTE sim. Its the data plan on your account that makes the difference. There are 3G, 4g and 4G LTE plans. If you have any data at all your on a correct plan. I have never seen a non LTE data plan work on a LTE phone. I have a Note on an unlimited LTE plan. Don't let bad reps lie.

I have a similar problem. My wife bought me the phone and when she brought it home, I just took the sum from my Atrix and put it in. When accessing data, I get the 4G at the top. I am on the 3G unlimited plan as well. How do I know if the sim from my Atrix is 4G or not?

The blue and white SIM cards are the old ones. You need an orange / blue SIM card.

There are. The blue / white SIM cards do not officially support LTE. They should still work for call etc, but data may not work properly.
And yes, data does need to be re provisioned under "unlimited LTE"

Just go into any AT&T store and ask for a new SIM card. ALL the new ones are LTE compatible.
SIM cards are free too. Just have the rep do an equipment change to your new IMEI / SIM. You'll keep your unlimited data, you get your new free SIM which will work just fine on LTE, and your data count will be reset for that billing cycle.
dial *3282# and you'll see the old deactivated HSPA+ data plan next to your fresh LTE plan. This is also one of the ways to remove throttling. More details on THAT can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517663

A lot of good info here. I do have a question though. I dialed *3282# and this is message I received back:
Next Bill Cycle: 03/02/2012
Data (MB): 720.6 of Unlimited (Deactivated)
Data (MB): 107.8 of Unlimited
Messaging: 6373 of Unlimited
Visit us online at www.att.com/DataPlans
So, besides the fact that I apparently send an exorbitant amount of text messages, I can assume the first Data line is the previous 3G unlimited plan, so does that make the second the LTE plan?
Also, you mentioned the color of sim cards. Mine is Blue/Orange/White on the front and orange on the back. Is this the one I need or do I still need to go into the store?
Thanks for all the info you've passed along so far.

What happened was, I talked about how I couldn't wait until March 15th so I could upgrade to the Note. My wife happened to be at the mall and stopped by one of those AT&T Kiosks and somehow convinced the guy to let her get upgrade early. I tried the same thing at AT&T store and they wouldn't do it. So she paid for the phone and brought it home. I took it out of the box, put my sim card in it and voila.
Not sure if that counts as a cross upgrade or not, lol.

Yes, it is because your account didn't get properly provisioned to use LTE data, your wife's account did. Call AT&T to have your account/data plan changed to LTE unlimited. It's that simple.
This. We went through al of it when the skyrocket released trust me. We have found the sim makes no difference unless its a really really old sim...but the provisioning is key

Im just really confused about my data speeds. Wifi is super fast. 3g just isnt fast at all. Crawls. Web pages take so long to load. They shouldnt be throttling me. Im only at 1200 mb.
I cant clear the thought of it being a defect with the phone.

HTC Amaze on Straight Talk-- ATT or Tmo sim??

Hi guys I an recently switching from Verizon over to Straight Talk to save some money. 45$ a month unlimited.. You can't beat it. Anywho here is my dilemma. I live in Michigan and out in the country on a lake where reception isn't that great as it is but it's still functional. I want to know if I should use the TMO Sim or the ATT Sim they offer. I already have a Tmo sim I can activate but if I do and the service sucks they said I need to change my number to get the att sim switched in. My question is will it give me any insight into my possible reception if I put in the sim b4 activating it and drive around? Bc it seems to show bars for awhile then just drop off and say no service after awhile for about 10mins then it comes in and out intermittently. Any insight is appreciated thank you!!
On another note I heard about some att /Tmo roaming agreement? If I could roam atts voice service all should be well right? Or is that not for mvno carriers? I really like my number or else I'd take the chance!
Check the coverage for your house so you can choose

I use my amaze with tmo sim on striaght talk and it works perfect! Everything is working great. I have awesome reception. 4g works great and I can tether my tablets and laptop all for 45 bucks a month. Took a lil while to get the apn settings right for everything to work because straight was telling the wrong settings but I got it right now and its awesome!

We all know those coverage maps don't mean jack lmfao. Hey gamble what are your apn settings so I can try them out and see how it goes. It has decent service with the unactivated sim card but keeps kicking to "no service" not sure if this is just from not being activated or the service is spotty.

Is there a data cap on strait talk? Also how are the 4G speeds on strait talk compared to the 4G on tmobile. I was going to switch to Metro PCs just to save money. I am getting tired of paying 210 dollars for 3 lines.

Consider looking into Walmarts T-mobile Prepaid 4G plan if the Straight Talk doesn't have good coverage.
$30 for 100 minutes, and unlimited text and data (5GIG of 4G data).
If you prepaid it with credit card, you get $5 off making it $25.
I love the plan, and only ONCE have gone over the 5G of data. Speeds average 2-6MB, and with good coverage up to 15-20MBps

I thought straight talk piggy backed right off of AT&T so wherever AT&T customers get coverage you would get coverage?

I've heard there was a cap but I use a lot of data and have never had any problems. And speed wise I cannot see a difference from tmo.

Lg Mytouch on ST?
This sounds very interesting. We own our phones, One Amaze one LG MyTouch (wifes).
Wonder if the lg would work on Straight talk?
Is Straight talk 4g service "LTE" ?
thinking of switching from simple mobile... do any of you guys have issues with throttling? simple mobile throttles same as t-mo does after 2GB... also, what SIM card do I need for it to work? I have an old at&t SIM and a couple old T-Mo SIMs... do they require you to use one of theirs? If so, where do you get it? I went by my local wally world and they only sold the stupid phones and re-up cards, no SIMs and the person that was available was zero help... any info would be GREATLY appreciated... I'm not too worried about the speed difference, I'm in a large metro area, so I'm sure it won't be a huge difference whether I use t-mo or at&t...
ok, well I found the SIM on their site, ordered it, got free shipping... will purchase the unlimited plan when I receive the SIM and will report back with some comparison (to SimpleMobile) photos... I just went the "unlocked GSM phone" route instead of choosing one or the other, which I guess means it's equivalent of going the att route...

Yeah..i did the same thing. Supposedly they pick best SIM for your area. I say if you know what phone you have and what service is better in your area, just pick it instead of letting them. I ended up with ATT and signal was horrible at my house, dropped calls all the time. So i recently swapped over to ST TMO SIM and it's been amazing. I had verizon and it was terrible (at my house), sprint was the worst, no signal whatsoever. I don't live out in the country or anything either. It's like a dead spot just at my house, my brother lives down one block from me and has verizon and is great for him.
Anyhow...ST TMO with a Samsung Galaxy Blaze gets 10MB/s down and 1MB/s up. Download speeds faster then my home ISP.
Only had ST TMO for a week and it's been alot better then ATT for me. So it will be trial and error. Whatever fits best for you, but what's good about it is that SIM card is only $15 if you have to try the other one.
Good luck!

I just bought the Tmo SIM, the ATT service was horrible (Orlando, FL) dropped more calls this month than I have in the last 3yrs... absolute SHYTE!!! FU ATT!!! soooooo happy that "merger" failed hard on it's face!!!
Just my two cents hope this clarifies st just pays Atat and t-mobile to use there network, servers etc. They can't alter it ie. Roaming agreements. So if you have.both sims try them both to see which works better t-mobile still gives 4g I don't think Atat can on st. Also ive changed a number from a phone to a sim while it was activated.

Important: When you buy a ST sim card you will have a choice between at&t or t-mobile networks.
http://www.straighttalk.com/shopsims
If you chose.. "Unlocked GSM Phone (Phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands)" this is the at&t network card.
If you chose.. "T-Mobile Compatible Phone" this is the t-mobile network card.
You can buy both cards and switch networks without losing your minutes or being charged for switching networks. In the your ST control panel both cards (after registration) will be listed as available options.
