[Q] rooting my Indonesa's SGS2 GT-I9100, humbly request for help - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there
i am so new at this and really need help from you guys.
i have read several thread about how to root your phone and already stuffed with some general ideas of what is rooting, and some terms like rom and kernel. but yet still confused about how to really start the rooting itself.
much of the threads i visit are sort of (as far as i understand) specified for Samsung Galaxy S II GT - I9100 with Ginger Bread 2.3.2 as the firmware. i already updated mine into ics 4.0.3 with specifics below:
baseband version: I9100DXLP7
kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100DXLP7-CL233393 [email protected] #3
build number: IML74K.DXLP7
PDA/PHONE: I9100DXLP7 and CSC: I9100LBLP7
much of the explanation i read, srated with downloading the Odin (attached file), and that's pretty much after where i lost
so please, can anybody help me about this?
thanks in advance, and best regards

I'm sorry, it isnt clear. what exactly do you want help with? Using Odin to flash a custom kernel?

Hi...
Go to ChainFire thread and look for (CF-Root DXLP7) kernel and flash that via Odin.
Second is download ChainFire TriangleAway app to remove the triangle warning on boot.
Thats it you are rooted

yes, i found CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip, unzipped and rooted the tar in it, and according to ChainFire instruction, i think this one is the right one for my kernel.
although i can't flash kernel as instructed by him:
Instructions - If you already have CF-Root
- Copy the zip file to your SD card
- Stop sharing SD card with computer over USB, unplug the cable, etc
- Applications -> CWM -> Flash kernel. Select the ZIP file on your SD card.
- Done
opened the CWM, but no options available and basically the application is running but nothing really happen
what should i do? thanks
ps. i can't ask ChainFire directly on his thread as i haven't posted stuff more than 10 posts yet

[Q] First smartphone. Rooting concerns.

hi,
since this is my first smartphone i got some questions before starting to root.
im using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
my goals:
- get root
- install titanium backup pro
- backup phone completely
- freeze stock apps
- gain more battery life
KIES info:
PDA: KE2 / PHONE: KDJ / CSC: KE2 (DBT)
[thats also the newest available for me, says kies]
ABOUT PHONE info:
baseband: I9100XXKDJ
kernel version: XWKE2
questions:
- chainfires kernels are XW_XEU_KE2 not XW_KE2, does this matter?
- can i upgrade to a rooted KE7 kernel with a previously installed KE2 stock or do i need to installa a KE7 stock first?
thanks in advance!

Check the third post of Chainfire's thread. There is a KE7 kernel attached.
Titanium Backup will not back up the entire ROM. It just backs up apks and their data. If you read Chainfire's thread you will dicover this thing called CWM (ClockworkMod) which allows you to backup everything (except the kernel right now).

Not totally safe about 99% safe as 99% of problems are easy to recover from .
Rooting voids your warranty so needs removing before any return .

Rooting Issue & Yellow Triangle
***PLEASE HELP TANTRUM INEVITABLE SOON***
Another pissed off customer from Telechoice here after buying the Galaxy S2 loaded with Optus bloatware & home splash screen. Asked the slightly overweight muffin eating dosile shop clerk twice if the phone contained any pre-loaded software. NO so i asked again is the phone a generic vanilla model. She gave me the im confused Gorilla scratch obviously clueless & just wanted to get back to her cookies & cream muffin.
Scary that a mobile phone sales woman doesn't know the term "generic or vanilla'
Anyway after much research & pre-study i have used ODIN & SuperOneClick successfully rooting the phone but now have the yellow triangle on boot up + i still have the Optus crap :-( After more research i gather i needed to flash the phone again using KE7 firmware so i downloaded the file which is zip approx 4.9MB & password protected. Punched in all found passwords on XDA & Whirlpool but always get the windows error message tried taking the password off altogether still 0.
Cannot extract the KE7 from the Zip file & when placing the Zip directly into Odin as a zip & starting it doesn't even read passed.
When i SuperOneClick Root with the KE7 it just lags with a message 'waiting for device'
As is i'm struggling to do the flash process properly.
Current Phone Stats:
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXKDJ
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 root DELL103 2
Gingerbread: XWKE2
Can anyone give me some guidance from A to Z here including the necessary FREE links for the KE7 that isn't password protected.
I'm no Bill Gates but i do have fairly good skills but despite trying this several times all KE7 firmware links found are in zip form & password protected & the passwords supplied don't work on my windows PC.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as i've been on this for 2 full days it's driving me mad.

[Q] How to root galaxy S2 but keeping current rom

Hi there,
I have read quite a few forums/threads/blogs but still haven't found a simple answer.
Basically, I am still using stock rom (Samsung Galaxy S2) and have install many apps. If I do choose to root my device, do I need to reinstall all the applications?
I know I should do a backup before I start anything but if my device hasn't been rooted yet. How can I do a backup?
Appreciate if someone can give some pointers on how I can root without completely removing the existing rom and wiping out all apps that are installed.
Thank you.

Yes.
Besides, rooting will NOT delete anything from the device and it has nothing to do with ROM change, you will keep your current ROM.
Regards.

It it depends on what version of ROM you have. You will need to use Odin and flash as PDA , xwdd insecure kernel. Then you can run oneclickroot. This will keep your apps.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Two ways. Both keep your apps, settings and data:
1) Flash CF-Root kernel using Odin. (search for the CF-Root thread in the original Android Development section)
2) Flash an insecure kernel using Odin (search for insecure kernel in the Galaxy S 2 section) and then run Superoneclick from your PC while hooked up to the SGS2.
Personally, I went for the CF-Root method as it is easier. You just end up getting the yellow exclamation triangle at boot, which you can remove by either using Odin to flash the stock kernel in again, then running the ClockworkMod app (it is installed by CF-Root) and flash the unzipped CF-Root zImage file back in, OR, you can use a USB jig that you can buy off ebay for a few dollars to remove the exclamation mark.
hey guys,
I have managed to read up quite a bit on rooting my Samsung Galaxy S2.
From what I understand, I would need to install kies(already done) for the usb driver, then install Odin(done) and download the insecure kernel xwkdd(also done) to flash it
It was also mentioned that in order to remove the yellow triangle on boot, I would need to flash the stock kernel and here's where my confusion is.
I am using the Indian version of Galaxy S2 and would really appreciate if I get help on exactly WHICH kernel to choose as a stock kernel for my device. I did see the kernel list, but not too sure whether it is meant for other nations.
My phones specifications are:
Baseband Version: I9100DDKE4
Kernel Version: [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
PDA: I9100XWKF3
PHONE: I9100DDKE4
CSC: I9100ODDKF3
So before I go ahead with rooting, please help me with selecting the correct kernel so that I can join the root world... :-D
Thanks in advance,
Vibes

thank you very much. i will browse and see if i can find it in the thread which has the kernel list.
CF-Root is simple and quick. Well, after reading how to get it done.
I'm pretty much in the same boat but I don't know which cf-root to use.. how do I tell?
I'm on kernel version DUKH1

[Q] Rooting stock XWLA4 kernel

Is there a way to root the XWLA4 official stock kernel without flashing another kernel?
I found some threads in the forum but i couldnt find a way without flashing.
My phone specs are:
android version : 2.3.6
Baseband v: I9100XXKI3
kernel v: [email protected] #2
build number: GNGERBREAD.XWLA4
it's easier to just download Odin program then a CF-Root kernal that matches or similar to the one you have, putting phone in download mode connecting your phone, select under pda the cf-root-XX***.tar file and flash. You can do it in 5min. (SEARCH THIS FORUM)
If you going want to be with the big boys you have to be bold.
Search the forums, but the above is as simple as 123.
If all faills (which it shouldn't unless you have a messed up infected computer with a faulty usb cable) then you can just start again and flash a whole new stock firmware + pit file - also information available here in the forum.
Ps. remember to back up before doing it.
There are other methods .
Zergrush etc .
But why root do you need root to run something ???

True. Neither latest zergrush nor the given link for rooting ICS work. Are there any other methods out there to root the kernel despite flashing the CF kernel?
I have stock kernel, stock rom and rooted mobile, I just used a cwm.zip to get cwm then flashed a file containing su and root access
As in the thread;-)

Samsung Galaxy SII Rooting Help

Before I start, I just want to say I am completely new to the forums and this site in general, but look forward to being a part of the community. Cheers. :good:
Being a complete idiot at technology, I cannot seem to figure out how to root my Samsung Galaxy SII. The details of it are:
- Model Number: GT - I9100
- Android Version: 4.0.3 (ICS)
- Baseband Version: I9100DXLPA
- Kernel Version: [email protected] #3
- Build Number: IML74K.DXLPB
Can any kind soul provide this lonely fool on how to root his SGSII or a forum thread to how to? It seems that my baseband version is different and I cannot seem to find a root that works for it
Anyway, thanks in advance!
Hi,
Welcome to XDA.
You can learn how to root your SII running on ICS here.
Check this out.
One simple advice, read (or repeatedly reading) before asking any question. In xda, there are more than enough guides for rooting, probably more than my underwears.

Does both of this links work for my baseband version and kernel version? Is it universal?
FYI, the baseband have nothing to do with rooting, it is commonly known as the "Modem". You only need to pay attention to the firmware (aka ROM) and the kernel. Read the whole guide, understand the risk of not following instruction before you attempt to start anything.
Edit: Using CWM to root will not give you Yellow Triangle nor increase in binary counter, because it doesn't need you to flash an insecure kernel. (which is the method 1)
Use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. You don't need CWM and it works for all ICS ROMs.

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.
Yeah, welcome to the rooted world where you can explore more with your phone
