Enabling 2G data connection purposely on the Photon - Motorola Photon 4G

I feel really stupid for asking this, but here goes. I have a Photon, just got one of the T-Mobile SIM cards, activated it with the $30/month unlimited web+text+100 minutes talk time thing and I'm wondering - for my own purposes, mind you - how to purposely enable only 2G data on the Photon, if at all possible.
Now, at the moment I'm running the stock 2.3.4 ROM, unlocked and rooted so I could install the KDDI radio, and my T-Mobile speeds are consistently in the 5-6 Mbps range which is more than acceptable and I have zero issues with that service at the moment.
Having said that, and again for my own purposes, is there a specific way to get the 3G data connection switched to straight 2G/EDGE mode directly on this thing? I will be moving over to cybik's CM7 ROM here shortly and I can't recall (when I ran it a few days ago) if there's an option in the Mobile networks menu to switch from 2G to 3G. I was able to see the T-Mobile 2G network under the secondary menu as an available network, and I selected it but it still appears to be 3G.
Guess I'll play around with it some more, maybe there's a toggle on Google Play or something, just thought I'd toss the question out since I can't seem to locate such a toggle myself. DOH!!!
Update:
Installed that CM7 from cybik and it does have a menu toggle to directly enable 2G mode, works fine here for me (140-180 Kbps consistent, works great for streaming audio which I listen to frequently, iHeartRadio and a bunch of different police scanners online from RadioReference using Scanner Radio Pro). But I'm still wondering if it's possible to enable that with the stock 2.3.4 ROM directly, if anyone can offer any info, thanks.

Check this thread out.

It is for the atrix, but should be similar for stock.
Also you are correct CM7 has those settings allowed by default.
Also you can set the mode in the *#*#4636#*#* menu. Under phone information > CDMA Only = 2G ; EvDO only = 3G
Also: be careful editing the settings in the *#*#4636#*#* menu under the stock rom. It did it once and locked my phone on GSM and had to SBF to restore CDMA. Dunno why it did that but I have seen others have the same issue. IIRC i didn't even enable GSM it just happened when I entered the phone information menu.

[Solved] Radio?

Hi
OK, I have just received my Atrix, and am having trouble. Basically, it will not connect to mobile data.
It is an AT&T model, unlocked to all networks by the seller. I can make & receive phone calls (now I've found how to skip Blur setup), and have entered the correct APN settings, but it refuses to connect.
I am assuming this is a radio/frequency issue. Are there any radio images that can be used to correct this, so I can use this in the UK? On the Defy there is an app called "baseband switcher" which can install the correct info for you.
---------- SOLVED ----------
Just a quick edit to show this issue is fixed.
I am unsure what fixed it. I have performed most of my testing at work, and found that the issue here was a problem with my provider (they were doing maintenance in the area). But it didn't work at home either, initially. I have flashed several radios, modified pppd-ril.options and replaced libmoto-ril.so. Something out of these has fixed my issue.
If I get chance I will remove some of the mods to see if the issue comes back, and post the results here for anyone else who comes accross this problem.
By the way, this has only fixed the issue of no 2G data. 3G data on 900MHz is still unavailable, as far as I am aware. If anyone knows how to check which frequency is currently being used, I can check this further, otherwise I think this is the best we can hope for at the moment.
Hi
Does anyone know the answer to this?
Can I flash a UK/European radio on this (AT&T) Atrix? I have installed Aura, will this make a difference? Are there "fruitcakes" available for the radio, or must I use and SBF?
I have tried to research this through the site (and google) but I can find no definitive answers. All I think I need is a 900/1800/2100 baseband. I definately have the correct APN settings, and mobile data has worked while I've been out and about, but it is very patchy and I am not getting mobile data in places I know have good signal, and am noit getting 3G in places I used to.
I had this same problem on my Defy, and this was easily fixed using the Defy Baseband Switcher app. Selecting a UK baseband fixed all my issues then, so I expect the same now.
Please help
Thanks

Hello
I'm interested at the answer too. I have bought AT&T version from US and imported it to Europe.
The problem for me is that I need Atrix to use 900MHz 3G. I can use 2100MHz 3G but when the 3G is build using 900MHz, Atrix is not able to use 3G, only Edge or GPRS. I have other phone with 900MHz/2100MHz support which I use to verify existence of 3G service.
I have tried with radio version N_01.95.00R which did not work with 900MHz. Just couple of minutes ago I installed N_01.100.00R (CWM zip), haven't yet tested it with 900MHz.
I have seen reports from users owning Atrix, that they have been able to activate 900MHz 3G support by installing N_01.95.00R or N_01.97.00R.
If N_01.100.00R does not work, I''ll try N_01.97.00R and after that I don't know what to try.

Thanks, that's more info than I've managed to glean from my research.
I'm also on a network which uses 900MHz for 3G (in some areas at least) so this may be my problem. I'm currently on baseband N_01.77.15P. If you wouldn't mind letting me know once you've checked I'll wait for you to report back about
N_01.100.00R.
By the way, does anyone know if there are these "fruitcake" things for radios, or do they have to be flashed from SBFs?
Just FYI, I got impatient, and work has been quiet, so I tried myself.
1.100.0R and 1.95.0R made no difference for me.
I also tried an international 1.97.0R SBF, and this gave me an error while flashing... was quite worried till I pulled the battery and it booted back up fine.
I just want to add, here, that if I manage to get 3G reception I can use it fine. However I don't get 3G in very many places, including ones which worked perfectly (full signal) on my Defy. Also, as soon as it tips over to 2G in these places, it shows the "G" icon but does not allow any traffic.
As I said, this is exact problem I had with my Defy when a ROM I installed changed the baseband to a US one from a UK one, and it was fixed as soon as I changed back. So "all" I need is a baseband which will install on my (BL unlocked, SIM unlocked, Rooted and ROMed) AT&T Atrix which is compatible with (O2) UK bands (specifically 900MHz for 2G & 3G and 2100MHZ for 3G only).
I tested with N_01.100.00R, but no success.
I don't know anything about "fruitcake", but I have installed new radio versions either from sbf with RSD Lite or from zip-files using CWM.
Where to find radio versions made for Europe/international use?
I have an AT&T Atrix in Germany, everything works out ok. Try following:
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009 and flash the radio from there.
In your stock dialer, dial *#*#4636#*#*, choose Phone Information, Set preferred network type to "GSM auto (PRL)" or "GSM Only".
Before all that though, make sure you have the correct APN, it'd be a bummer if it's that simple..

Hi
Thanks. I have checked the APN settings so many times now that I could probably recite them by heart I have also installed an app which sets up the correct settings for me, so I'm pretty sure they are right. From *#*#4636#*#* network type is set to GSM auto, and "GSM disconnects" says "fail because Unknown Data Error".
Which radio from that post, BTW? The AT&T .91 one?

Yep, that's the one I'm using.
Try flashing that and see how it goes. Though data should work regardless older / newer radio; have you tried calling your provider?
Nup
Flashed the linked radio, and it made no difference.
By the way, I finally found where the "Select band" item was, it's in the 4636 menu, phone info, menu key, select band. This shows only USA.
I think I may try flashing the French fruitcake located here just to see if that fixes it. Orange France uses the same frequencies. I know it's stock, but I can try flashing a custom ROM after. I just want to get this thing working now...
Also, there is a post here which seems to suggest a method to fix it, but I am at work and it's too much hassle to set all that up here.
I tried to flash couple of international sbf's but none installed, sec_exception febe 35,35 was the problem.
Then I tried to install Bell radio from bellradiolatest.zip using CMW. Now I have version n_01.77.30s.qn, haven't tried 900MHz yet but 2100MHZ is working as it was with other versions.
4636 menu shows me also the USA Band, which is only option, cannot be changed.
After I have verified that this n_01.77.30s.qn ain't working, I'll try AT&T .91.
I'm using Cyanogenmod and prefer it, I just can't stand the original firmware or something based on original one. For example, week starts from Monday here, in CM I can choose it but US based firmwares week starts from sunday and cannot be changed.
I can confirm that flashing a French fruitcake doesn't work, results in flashing red led. Restored from backup, back to square one.

Also, does anyone know if O2 UK are disabling 2G on 900MHz when they enable 3G?

It is confirmed by motorola themselves, at the motodev website. This is the link to the said page.

Never heard of a carrier disabling a network they already have, but why would you be worried?
That sucks!
Anyway, the reason I was wonderring is that I cannot get a 2G data connection either. I have been told now on another forum that this is not the case, and I should be getting 2G data. So it seems the phone cannot even make a 2G data connection at 900MHZ (this network only does 2G at 900MHz, 3G is at 900/2100MHz). In *#*#4636#*#* it shows DcAtivatingState for ages, then goes inactive with "Unknown Data Error".
When I can get a 3G signal it is fine.

Could you type the whole thing out? Also, check your apn settings
I am absolutely certain the APN settings are correct, I have checked them over and over, set them using an app, and verified against my previous phone as well.

I have also just had a reply on my operator's forum from another user who says he had exactly the same problem with this phone.
Now it's just gone into DcActiveState, and says the connection is available. However, nothing gets through. It reckons it's sending and receiving PPP packets, but I can't ping anything, can't nslookup, and obviously can't browse.
Just tried with my old phone, and everything looks the same (when restricted to 2G only), and it operates perfectly. So it is the phone. I checked the APN settings again, before you ask, and they are identical between devices.
I did read something about the stock AT&T firmware blocking other APNs, but that can't be what's happenning here, can it? I mean, it works fine when it can get 3G.
Right, this is getting irritating.
I just flashed a stock 2.3.4 fruit cake to see if that helped. I added my APN settings, and couldn't connect. Set it in WCDMA only and it got a weak HSPA signal, went through Blur setup. Tried again on GSM auto and no joy, even when it hits DcActivatedState nothing gets through.
I am absolutely certain it is not the APN settings. I am sure they would not even allow 3G access if they were wrong, but with a 3G signal it works perfectly. But on GPRS (in several places, miles apart so on different cells) I can get not data connection.

Should Rezound show signal bars with no SIM card?

Here's the deal, I bought my Rezound in 2012 and flashed it to PagePlus Cellular using CDMA WS.
I've used it and it's been fine, running CM10 most of the time. I just bought a Evo 4G LTE and switched to that. So I RUU'd my Rezound, and it says a SIM card is required, etc.. but there are no signal bars.
I go into About Phone > Network >
and Operater name is "Unknown," signal strength is "0", service state is "out of service."
Now, the question is, is that normal? Does the phone need a sim card to connect to verizon towers?
I don't want to sell it while it's not working. I did call up Verizon and they said the ESN was clear for activation though.
So if I sell it and the new user puts in a SIM card, will it clear up all the signal issues? Or have I done the RUU incorrectly? [I did it a couple times because it didn't work the first time (the SD card method, then I did fastboot method)]
Thank you!
That is not normal behavior and you may need to do some more work before you sell it.
Make sure all related network settings are correct for Verizon instead of GSM under Settings > Mobile Network menu.
Try entering on the stock dialer *#*#4636#*#* to access the hidden testing menu as well for the phone radio and verify it is on CDMA. If that code doesn't work on the dialer try it via an app like "Hidden Menus" or even "Battery Monitor Widget" by 3C (click "Tests" icon > Phone information from main page of app.)
Background: I broke off of my Verizon contract six months in and used my phone as a WiFi-only device (VoIP and internet texting apps) for the longest time. While I typically hid my signal icon and ran the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi toggled back on, I would occasionally turn my radio on to resync time and date to the cellular network. With no SIM in it clearly was syncing off Verizon CDMA signal still; I simply wasn't fully activated on the network any longer.
I just made the StraightTalk AT&T SIM card plunge the past couple of weeks and did an NV edit in CDMA WS as well, all alright on GSM. I am on the stock global ICS ROM at the moment, one I know could sync time on CDMA before. However, I cannot get the phone to switch off of GSM even in the hidden testing menu, even without SIM in... Likely has to do with the NV edits I made, and perhaps that may be your case too.
You *could* repurpose the sale as a GSM enabled unit... If it was even set up and working well as such. But due to the current technical issues of getting GSM mobile data above 2G I'd suggest to get it fixed and working back on stock CDMA for the consumer's sake if you can. Again AFAIK It should pick up a CDMA signal even without active service or the Verizon LTE SIM in, did so for over a year lol.

in the mobile network, I have it set to "CDMA / LTE" but I tried "CDMA only" and "Global" but none worked.
*#*#4636#*#* didn't work in stock dialer, it just disappeared when I finished typing it.
then I downloaded Hidden Menu, found *#*#4636#*#* in the list, tapped it, and it did nothing. I did some other ones and they did do something. I found htc diag mode, the same one I used to program it originally. I clicked read, and the phone number and min were blank. so I went to the prl and tried flashing a verizon prl file, then rebooted, and still nothing.
I'm going to try to RUU again and hope that solves it.
Update
I RUU'ed again, but still no luck..
Can anyone confirm whether or not, say you got a Rezound out of the box never activated, would you need a SIM card to get the signal initiated? I'm thinking either that's the case and my phone just needs a sim card to jump start it, or my rezound is toast.

How to get T-Mobile LTE working (And Stable) On Sense 6 Roms with a Verizon One Max

Hey guys, I have a few questions that I need to get resolved which MAY help in getting LTE Working solid on Verizon One maxes for those who Have T-Mobile, but I would like to confirm that T-Mobile LTE does work on the Verizon one Max. You don't need to flash ANY special Radios. You can even use Verizon's Latest Radios and it works. All that needs to be done is use *#*#4636*#*# to change the preferred network type to GSM/WCMDA/LTE and boom, it works. The Problem I am having is that you have to switch to GSM Only first, just to get it to Work on T-Mobile before you switch to GSM/WCDMA/LTE. Another problem is that when you reboot once or Twice, my radio keeps on going crazy Rapidly switching from No Service to T-Mobile and Back. I go back into *#*#4636*#*# and I see that it changed to EvDO+CMDA/LTE Mode. I would have to go back and switch to GSM only to fix the problem then back to GSM/WCDMA/LTE Mode to connect to the network again. And yes I have the fast.T-Mobile.com APN Already inputted. This is with both Verizon and Sprint Sense 5 or 6 Roms. So we know LTE works on T-Mobile with the Verizon HTC One Max, But it won't stick. However, I decided to Flash a Cyanongen 11 Rom to the One Max, I am able to go System > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type and switch it to GSM/WCDMA/LTE, Reboot, then go into dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#* and Switch to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and it works flawlessly. No matter how many times I restart, I still instantly connect to T-Mobile's LTE Network. Texting and MMS works with no issue. So what I think the issue is that On Sense roms there is only 6 Different Preffered Network types to choose from but on the Cyanongen 11 Rom, there are over 15. Also, On Sense ROMS there is only a GSM/WCDMA/LTE type with no Auto and I think that's the issue. There is no LTE/GSM auto (PRL) Selection in Sense roms. Because when I choose GSM (auto) on Sense, I can connect to HSPA, 3G, and EDGE with no issues. So I am asking for some help in How can we get more Preferred network type selections under *#*#4636*#*#. Or is there some scripts we can change with the current ones that resemble a LTE/GSM auto (PRL) Selection. But I think that is the culprit in Getting LTE fully working.
And just to Confirm that LTE is working on HTC One Max Verizon Version.
Even when I put my phone in wcdma/gsm/lte my service stays outputting no signal. Even when I reboot it stays like that until I change the network mode.
I wish t mobile released a one max so we could get WiFi calling

I'm trying to do this too. But the roms I have tried so far won't let me get into *#*#4636#*#*. What Rom did you use to get into it?

This does seem to fix one of the Issues, but I am getting Signal Dropouts on LTE when going from Tower to Tower and have to turn on and off Airplane Mode to get it working agian. Do you ever experience this issue?
I don't have to use airplane mode to regain a signal. In my area T-Mobile has spotty signal strength. That is one reason I use LTE but only when signal is fair to good and for long video streaming. Hspa+ for me is better on battery and suffice for Tapatalk, email, mms, market downloads, apk even short videos, etc. I stream more on the weekend because it football season.

I use to Have a Sprint One Max with it Unlocked as well and I only got HSPA+ Speeds with it. I never Went about getting LTE to work because I though it didn't have the Compatible Radio inside of it. I am hearing that the Sprint Version has the Same LTE bands as the Verizon Network Uses. But I would try to go into you *#*#4636#*#* (or Download Network from the Play Store) And try switching your preferred network to GSM/WCDMA/LTE and see if it works. Make sure, that your APN Is set to the Fast.t-mobile.com One also. That is all I did to get it to work on the Verizon Version.

Same here. Also, I tried switching bands and it did seem to fix the Problem, However it prevents me to Call out or Receive Calls because usually when making or Receiving a Call, the LTE Band goes back to 3G/H/H+ because T-Mobile hasn't Activated VoLTE yet. But it is good to know that LTE does work but it's not really Stable and Global Phone Friendly. The Problems really happen when Driving around or Going from Tower to Tower. Signal goes from perfect to NULL and just stays at 1 or 0 Bars no matter where you go. And you either have to Restart the Phone, Turn the Radio off then on, or Just simply Turn on and Off Airplane Mode to fix it. So I am just using WCMDA or GSM Only for the time being and I don't really want to go to a AOKP CM11 Rom because most of the Features I use aren't there. And just to Clarify, Switching/Flashing Radios and basebands does NOT Fix the problem. I have tried All sorts of Radios, even from T-Mobile HTC One Phones and just doesn't work.
I had used the steps in the link pasted under this to get my LTE working perfectly on the stock Verizon ROM with Sense 5.5 but after upgrading to Sense 6 these changes have caused some issues. The changes worked fine for a day but then the second day mobile data stopped and nothing I did could bring it back. I ended up having to flash a stock rom RUU to get mobile data to come back. I'm not sure why the data stopped on the second day, I may have been from other changes I made to dpi or adding on screen buttons or re-locking the bootloader to use the fingerprint scanner. For now I'm just using gloabal mode which gets me good 3G till I re-gain my courage to try modifying the settings to get the LTE again.

No data connectivity at all when 4G enabled on tmo US, works with 3G though

Hi All,
I just got the international Z5c, model E5823, which supports both tmo us LTE bands in my area (bands 1 and 12). When I have preferred network type set to 3G, I get more bars and have data connectivity. When I switch it to 4G, the bars go down to 1 or 2, and I get no data.
I did a logcat while switching from 3G to 4G and noticed that while switching, the icon switches between H+ and H, then eventually drops out. I'm still trying to see if there is anything useful in the logcat, but the one thing I noticed that seemed interesting was
Code:
D/StatusBar.NetworkController( 2598): updateIconSet, voice network type is: 13/LTE, data network type is: 13/LTE
To me, this looks like I might be seeing issues with some failed attempt to use voice over lte (as this phone supports it).
Regardless, does anyone know how I can disable voice over LTE? There was an option in the phone menu on the Z3 supposedly that would let you toggle, but I don't see it anywhere on this.
I'm going to be cross posting this in the sony forums as well, so if I hear back I'll post here.
Fixed it. I turned it onto 3g and selected "Internet settings" from the networking menu, which seems to have downloaded some configuration stuff from my carrier. After switching back to 4g I have fully working data.

Anyone using this phone with AT&T in the US?

I love this phone....there, I said it. But it's driving me crazy.
I bought it from a Chinese retailer, who shipped it with X821 firmware, but the box states that it's an X820. I doubt there is any difference in the hardware.
I would have left everything as it was, but I can't seem to make phone calls (don't have a data plan yet...yeah, I know....) with anything other than 2G, and that is about to go extinct. When I set it to WCDMA, it shows a UMTS connection, with no carrier designation, but the tower is the same one I connect to with 2G. The phone does sometimes show an AT&T 3G connection in the status bar, but I can't make calls, even though I have full signal. When I place the same SIM in my old HTC Inspire, the same monitoring app shows "UMTS - AT&T HSDPA+" and works just fine.
I'm at my wits end. I have rooted, installed TeamSpain recovery, replaced the firmware with the X829 and even tinkered with the frequency configurations through DFS Studio (which did a lot of complaining, and I'm still not sure if the changes stuck 100%). I also played with APN settings and tried the SIM in different slots, both alone, and with another SIM. And after all of that, still no progress in getting this phone to use a 3G or 4G connection to make calls. If I don't set it to "GSM only", no phone calls in or out. I'm essentially right under a tower, so signal shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone is using the same provider in the US, and is not having these kinds of issues, I'd really appreciate hearing what firmware you are using, and/or what you did to get things working.
I am using it on x820 with official stock 0.17s firmware, and did a dirty flash to cuoco92's 17s firmware. Everything works including HD voice calls, and full LTE.

I tried this, as well as the Remix ROM. In fact, I think I've tried just about everything, without success. At one point, I had one of the apps indicating a 4G connection, but the phone diagnostics showed GSM (2G). Even the apps aren't all sure what to make of what's going on with the connections reported by this phone.
Currently on the cuoco92 v35 ROM. When WCDMA is enabled, I see simply a good UMTS connection , sans carrier name, in the "Network Cell Info Lite" app, and no ability to make calls. I also often (but not always) see the "AT&T 3G" sign. 4G or LTE never shows at all, even though the diagnostics show that the phone is communicating with an LTE transmitter, when preferred network is set to "unknown". It won't even let me set things like "LTE only".
Any chance you could set your phone to WCDMA and see what the "Network Cell Info Lite" app shows you? Anyone else with this phone on AT&T?
BTW, I am now using a data plan, which I thought might make a difference. It doesn't. EDGE data only for me . New SIM card is on the way, but my hopes aren't high.
Is it possible for a Chinese seller to have borked the phone so thoroughly with their x821 ROM (it's an x820 marked phone), that it keeps any subsequent radios from flashing properly? I don't know how/why it would work for some and not others.
Starting to really dislike this "phone"......it's more of tablet at this point.
Thanks.
I think APN is not set for AT&T
try this:
"Main steps
To use data services on our network with a non-AT&T device, you may need to program the data settings. The sections below provide the correct settings and steps for programming based on your device type and operating system.
.
Access the Settings menu.
Locate and select Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
Select Mobile Networks.
Select Access Point Names.
Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
Program each field using the settings below.
Save the changes to return to the APNs menu and select the new APN.
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC
MMS proxy
MMS port
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
Note: If you are unable to program your device following the steps above, refer to your user manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

Thanks, but I wish it were so simple. I have tried this, and other APN settings. None work to get this phone to be usable on anything other than 2G.
I just received and activated the replacement SIM. Still no improvement. While typing this, I have Network Cell Info Lite app running, and with the Set Preferred Network Type showing "Unknown" in the phone's diagnostic screen, It will switch randomly between "EDGE AT&T" (which works fine) and "UMTS -" (which is useless). Both have strong signals. For a split second before it switched to "UMTS-", the app showed "GPRS AT&T", but only for a split second before it kicks over to "UMTS-".
I wish someone using this "phone" on AT&T in the US, would run this app to compare notes. It may be that that the phone works fine on a full implementation of LTE (i.e. in locations where AT&T have already deprecated 2G) but not in other areas. Still, that doesn't seem to explain why this phone seems unable to register on the same 3G network, used easily by my other phone, with the very same APN settings and SIM.
You would have to call att and check if they turned our phone on to use lte. If your phone is not "registered" as an LTE capable phone it wouldn't be able to pick it up. This phone has all the bands needed for AT&T because I am using it now. All LTE work straight out the box, and i'm on the latest 19s cn rom

I'm a bit confused. Is this what you did to achieve proper function of this device? I.e. calling AT&T and getting them to do this for you? My conversation with their tech person didn't seem to bear fruit in this regard.
Also, which slot do you have the SIM card in? I've used the stock 17s and now on cuoco92 v35 ROM. There definitely seems to be a difference in how the network settings behave, based on the location of the SIM. At one point, after selecting BAND 6 (when it would let me), the phone showed a constant "AT&T 3G" connection, but it was useless. No calls and no data.
