[Q] Speaker problems, software or hardware? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Atrix worked flawlessly for the last 6 months on Jokersax's ICS rom and CM9. Last month my headphones stopped working, and a work or so ago speakerphone stopped working. 2 days ago the ear speaker went out. The mic is still working fine, I just get no audio whatsoever.
Any ideas?
It's at a repair shop at the moment, but the guy called and said he's not seeing any issues with the speaker itself.
If it is software, what might fix this? I even tried flashing a new rom with no fix.

My first question is does the headphone out work? I would guess that if the headphone jack audio is fine then you might need to replace or repair the jack on the phone. There is a switch built into it that cuts sound to the speakers when headphones are plugged in. It is unlikely for that to stick, but not impossible. Fortunately. That repair is very easy to do. I have pics of it somewhere. I'll put them online if you need them.
If it isn't that and you can't find audio at the headphone contact points on the board you probably are going to need a new board.

Headphone was the first thing to stop working.

My ear speaker also stopped working. I tried flashing different roms but apparently the problem won't solve. My first guess is this is a hardware issue. Try do the same as in order to make sure.

This is exactly what happened to me. All of my audio outputs were shot. But if I whacked my phone against my hand, sometimes the headphones would work, so I'm betting on hardware. I have tried multiple roms but none seem to work. You can try flashing a GB rom, like Neutrino, with a full wipe, just to make sure its not software. GB roms have all of the official drivers needed for this phone, so they would be the roms that most likely fix it, if it is software.
PS: JdgM3NT4L if you could please put those pics of the headphone switch on here or direct me to them, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to see if that makes a difference on my Atrix. Thank You

You know what, I am so sorry that I let this slip. Here are the photos and an observation.
First pic shows the headphone jack from inside of the phone.
I simply removed the battery cover, removed 8 screws and gently pried the back off.

This photo shows me beginning to remove one of the contacts.
This one shows one of the contacts removed.
And this one shows the camera board where the headphone jack makes contact.
And if you want to simply replace the whole jack it comes out easily, those are available on ebay.
If I was not able to repair your problem by taking those pins out and checking them for breaks, and possibly re-bending them back into shape.
I think that I would consider either a new jack. Or a new camera board, since that is the first point of contact. Also that is where I would check for audio. It would be a little difficult getting the battery in place and manipulating the phone to play while it is apart, but doable with enough resolve.
Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner. I really meant to get to this way before now...

S9-HD and G1 pairing problem

Maybe it's just bad luck.
I bought one pair of these off ebay and the microphone didn't work.
It's paired and connected for phone and music. Music control and playback is great. When a phone call comes, the music stops and plays my ring tone in my ear. I answer with the button on the side, but this is where the problems start. While in a phone call I can hear the other person, but they can't hear me. The microphone simply doesn't work. I try tapping and blowing to register any sound, and there's nothing.
All the websites say this is supported by the G1, but I'm starting to not believe it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Am I doing something wrong?
Then I bought a pair from Best Buy. Same thing.
Thank you.
The same thing happened to me actually when I was testing out various bluetooth headsets. Looked like a bit of an idiot in town talking to myself haha. I've not had a chance yet to test a different headset and indeed if the recent fixes (look in the development section for the thread by Meltus) actually work.
Well, IDK, because I have Cupcake and it doesn't work. I think I'm just gonna throw in the towel and return the Best Buy one... and use it just for music, not phone calls...
Official Cupcake (OTA) or a modified one? If you haven't already I would recommend rooting your mobile phone and slapping on the Dude build, this along with the Meltus audio mod has fixed the bluetooth issue.
In my signature there is a link to the FAQ if you need instructions on how to root etc.
Oh man. I used to mess with my Wing so much. I had open touch, touch it, thought about ICP, and everything, but the G1 seems like something I really shouldn't mess with. It seems too... integrated.
On top of that, are there any guarantees this would make my s9-hd work in call?

I have the S9 headset and works fine with my phone, i am running JF1.5
s9-hd
i have the s9-hd bought from someone off of craigslist. pairs perfectly and bass hits hard
Hmm... guess I am s.o.l. Maybe I'll give it another shot, but I think I'm just cursed.
The music is great, the sound quality in call is great, but the mic won't connect, or something.
i had the same problem while on JF 1.51 so i decide to try another rom and it been working fine on cyanogenrom idk if ur into the rooting of ur g1 but that seem to be the only fix for me
I am using the S9 SYN1902 A, they work fine for me on jf 1.50 and jf 1.51.
I had some problems with the s9-hd at first on my G1, but have eventually grew to really like it. I wear it everywhere listening to podcast and shoucast streams using Streamfurious. It has worked about the same using the stock mod and now CM 3.8.6.1.
1. first off it didn't fit my head, but kept stretching it before each use and after about 5 days it now fits perfectly and I can wear it for hours without any fatigue or ear strain.
2. You have to make sure that you turn bluetooth on the G1 first for auto-pairing to work properly.
3. I'd like to get an arm case for the G1 because the audio will cut out by having it in pants pocket. I can use it no problem by placing it in my laptop bag on the go.
4. I have had a strange problem with pairing the headset set, but that was resolved by turning off the radio and turning it back on.
Do these have InEar headphones or standard ones?

the first ones (they come with different sized buds)
JJ, they are more like the in-ear version (but I would say they are not quite as tight as other noise-cancelling in ear headphones I have tried - a good balance imho).
I have this set for almost a year now using it daily (while commuting to work, during exercise, commuting home, and sometimes in the evening while hanging out at home). They have really worked great and I have definitely gotten A LOT of use out of them. However I think they are finally starting to flake out on me. They still work, but not the colored light no longer flashes while I charge it, tho it still seems to charge. Also, some other times while working out the volume starts to beep uncontrollably. Turning the headset off and on again doesn't always work, so I think some sweat might be seeping into the unit causing it to short out. After leaving the unit sit for a while (1hr+) it again seem to work just fine. go figure. Also the adhesive on the back of the unit is definitely starting to peel more and more. If I am unable to mod the S9-HD to breathe more life into it I might be back in the market for a new A2DP headset in the near future.

fm transmitter?

can anyone recommend a quality fm transmitter? dont have an aux input in my car radio (damn thing has everything else but no input!).
I believe belkin might make a mini usb transmitter. But u can use on of those tape deck converters with a headphone attached. That's what I use from time to time. I'm not sure if ur radio has a tape deck lol considering its dead tech lmao
lol! My radio's not that old. Couple of years but was one of the better pioneers. Quite a few bells & whistles, sat. radio, ect., just no stupid aux input!
this one is £4.99 ($8.15656) it is really good once you find a free frequency and powering it from the car cigarette lighter is a must because it is SH*T when running it from batteries
Are you sure it doesn't have an aux round the back?
I picked up an FM transmitter from Netto for £1.99 or £2.99 a while back, quite big though. They were selling it as "Wireless headphones" as it came with some FM headphones.

In Italy is not possible to use it as described. The problem? No free fm freqeuncy, and even if found one in the car is mandatory to change frequency to find new frenquently. So useless, the only solution can be to remove the camble of the antenna and to put it near the fm trasmitter but in this case we have to rennunce to the fm radio.

Same for me. I have the Belkin transmitter, but never could use it.
You just struggle to find a free frequency, and a few kilometers later, it is all jammed already.
I even tried to find something like 3 different frequencies for different parts of my daily trip... and I failed...
And even when I found some working frequencies, sound was rarely free from perturbations.
Note that country legislations are different (I am in France) and maybe in us you can have a transmitter with stronger emission, which might improve the situation a bit.
( linked Belkin product : "This product is compliant with the EU standard for Band II Low Power Devices for use in Germany, Switzerland and Iceland" so maybe try a US version instead ? )
I did not try unplugging external antenna. If it did solve the problem, you would have to find a way to have a switch to plug/unplug it... (not so easy !)

for me the only solution that can let it work properly is to find the cable of the antenna in the car. After discovered out where is located try to put the trasmitter very close to the antenna cable. It can work. Another solution can be to reduce a little the power of receiving signals of the antenna, that can let to listen good the frequency well trasmitted and at the same time to
free some others.
Found this on Cellphoneshop.com
http://www.cellphoneshop.net/dashfm.html
Dude fmtalk kicks ass!!
update: I tryed to use the fm trasmitter buyed without the battery but only using the alimentation from the car. The things seems to work really good now. Even with a not clear radio station is trasmitting with more power and the signal of the fmtrasmitter is going over other signals.
If is possible to reduce a little the power of the car's antenna it will be really really perfect!
Here is one from Dealextreme.com.
Pros:
Cheap
Puts out a strong FM signal
Remote is nice, even though it's goofy looking
Charges and transmits at same time.
Cons:
Low Volume
Bad bass output
Takes forever to arrive.
Cheap plastic.

Yep, just got mine today as well. Works fine, remote is goofy as hell (have yet to try it though). It could fit a little snugger, but it holds will concidering the extra thickness with my battery.
No weird hissing and strong output with pandora and music on my sd card.
4/5 for it "just working", but doing it well.

Sound only works with headphones

Hey,
i have a huge Problem. Somehow the sound of my phone kind of only works with headphones.
Sometimes the rear speaker will give sounds but generally the windows media player never works with the speaker.
Strangely though the alarm works with the speaker. But when i get a phone call, the microphone and the front and rear speaker dont work. if i plugin the earphones it works fine, but as soon as i pull them out it doesent work anymore...
ive tried using different roms but it just wont work.
I have the feeling my system thinks the headphones are plugged in all the time and doesent recognise, when they get pulled out.
Anyone got an idea?
Greets
David
Let me tell you that i have exactlly the same problem
My device recognise that a hands free kit is still inserted even when i unplug it !!!
so, when i get an incoming call or alarm event, the internal speaker works.
Otherwise, no sound till i plug in the hands free kit.
any help please !!!
I have a Qtek s200 3G

Mine is a Vodafone vpa compact-s

Does anyone have an idea what we can do?
I have had this problem before and it eventually just worked again.
But im not sure if it happened by chance or if i did something...
And well... i´m stuck with the same problem agaain
Greets
David
Let's ask firstlly if that is a hardware or a soft issus ???
And i suppose that is a hardware problem !
in the other hand, i disassembled my Qtek looot's of times and i didn't find any dammaged thing wich corresponds to the sound !!!
any way that was just my oppinion !

Sound problem fix
I had the same problem. Easy fix. Blow in the earphone hole a few times.
It worked for me. Guess there was dirt inside.
you have to open your device like what i did.
But be carefull.
if don't know how to open your device, i advice you to not to do it.
ask an experienced hands to heal your Prophet
after opening your device, look at the jack, you will see it covered, its actually covered by a lil plastic cover that you can pop off with a small screw driver. the jack will be like this

...I think it's not secessary at all....... I had the same problem and I did:
(DO THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK!!!)
1st. Put a .mp3 song using your mp3 player (for example tcpmp or windows media player)
2nd. Insert your 2.5mm headphone jack one time, two times, three times...and revove it doing a little angle..(similar to lever)
3rd. If you can't make your speaker sing, try to insert a different item through the speakers hole (be careful!!!)
I repaired it and I never had the same problem!!!

Sound Problem
I had the same problem as you. As " specter16" said, the problem is the hardware inside the 2.5mm jack. After plugging in the headfones in and out a few times the problem occured and i had to open my device again. I never found a real solution, and so I started to use Bluetooth-Headphones (iTech Blueband)
I use them now for about 2 years....
Maybe anyone of you will try them^^

It's possible to fix it without any kernel patch.
Go to music settings and uncheck "unpause on connect".
It looks like sometimes when you unplug a headphone the phone thinks you are plugging it in.

unfortunately that doesn't fix the problem.
It has been posted elsewhere, but here it is again.
The bug seems to come from the fact that the phone was designed for use with a 4-pin jack. Compare the jack on the stock headphones to one without inline mic.

Note the difference? The one on the right is the stock jack. The one on the left is a set of SkullCandy headphones.
If you unplug the stock headphones, no random music starting.
Unplug a non-4-pin headphone = Ghost Music.
Don't know if that matters or not but that is where the bug comes from.
This seems like a great way to think about it but I would half to turn this being the BUG as negative. Because Bluetooth users that have the music profile paired to their radio experience the same thing and it has no plug.
Many users of stock and compiled roms experience it with plug and/or Bluetooth.
*** EDIT ***
This happens to bluetooth setup with a droid in the office running cyanogen, its very repeatable when walk up to the car.

Great! I wanted a fix for this for so long!!
Does this also fix the random song skipping that you can experience if you move the non 4-pin 3.5mm plug around while playing music?

I haven't looked at the bluetooth variation of this bug. Now that I am aware of it, I'll look to see if the two situations are due to a common cause. Initially I was just thinking it was the physical phone jack insert/removal that was the root cause.
I'd still like feedback from folks with wired headsets that can test this kernel for any improvement.
So far I haven't heard from anyone.

Ok take your stock headphones and plug in and unplug them 10 or 20 times and see how many times the music starts on its own.
Then take some non-stock 3-pin head phones and do the same thing. Post your results.
It may not be the only thing going on, however, it does help nail down the problem because as of this writing I have never had this issue with a four-pin jack but I have it every time I unplug a 3-pin jack.
As I said:
The Problem comes with the Musik2.1-update1.
In one of the ROM updates was an update of the Stock Music Player I think.
With the first ROMs there are no problems with Music.

Yes, really? Strange, I have this problem since one of the latest updates.
Has someone reported this problem to HTC?
In Germany, the Nexus One isn't officially buyable. My device is imported and I can't report this bug to HTC Germany.

The headset 4 pin vs 3 pin def has an effect and causes issues but its not the only thing going on with all the reported problems.
It goes across multiple phones not just the Nexus

Nope, you're wrong, I've used regular headset since day one, and I've never come across this issue.
It's more than likely an issue with faulty jacks making the rounds.
What regular headphones are you using? Can you confirm 4 or 3 pin jack?

the speaker is not working in any app or anywhere
I have done a factory reset it did not work
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
Sound from headset works? And does your speaker work if you call someone? If speaker works in a call, it should also work with music, if they dont work you need to send your device to customer service and they should replace speaker modul.

I think mine is a hardware issue because when I apply a little pressure on the back it starts to sound. So, I will go to a service center to get it fixed.
Hi shafay. Did you manage to fix your phone. I have the same issue. Thanks

I bought a new motherboard flex black cable and solved the same issue. In case it helps, there are plenty of videos on the internet showing to disassemble a Honor 10 phone. I strongly recommend watching one or two before buying the cable - so you know how it looks like.
Same problem,
but neither the replacement of the speaker nor the black motherboard flex cable did work for a long time.
By pressuring at the back cover near the flex cable , sound is hearing.
Any further solutions ?
Had the same issue happen to me before. Had to apply pressure on the back of my phone to have sound.
As with the other posts, It's usually the faulty flat flex cable connecting the motherboard to the speaker inside the phone. Buy the cable online (quite cheap less than $3) and open up the phone to replace the speaker cable.
Be careful in opening the back case of the phone, damaged and scratched the aurora effects while prying my phone open.
I manage to fix it
For anyone having this similar problems, hope it might help you.
About 2 months ago, im facing a problem with my Honor 10 speaker, sometimes it work and won't, sometimes i need to put some pressure from the back to get the audio back.
The problem is actually caused by faulty black ribbon cable connecting the motherboard with the speaker, when i open a song from Spotify, at the same time i put all my finger pushing down the ribbon cable, it works, the audio went loud from the speaker
How i fix this, without buying replacement part, i just apply some cellotape or anything tape works, along the black ribbon cable, touching the battery with a bit amount of pressure and done! it fix this issue

Go to the service center
I had same problem. I've sent it to service center. I've managed to do it on a last day of warranty, so it was for free. They changed pretty much everything except motherboard. So new display, new battery, new connectors, new back..

Hi, I had the same problem and I ordered a new loudspeaker but after installing it the problem remained so I start to check these flexible cables and the black one had an issue in the part of motherboard so I changed the way between battery flex and loudspeaker flex(the battery flex is underneath the loudspeaker flex) so if you change it (put loudspeaker flex under battery flex) will work fine.
