false low disk space notification? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just received a low disk space notification and i can not get rid of it. Just yesterday I had about 6gb of free space and today it says that i have 12mb left. i have not installed anything, as a matter of fact, i deleted some apps last night. I received this false notification before and all i did was wipe cache. this time i wiped both cache and dalvik and the issue is still there. any suggestions?

How much memory do you have left this time?

15mb

get the app "disk usage"........that is great for seeing what is using up disk space

Use Sdmaid which is available over play store and perform a system cleanup/app.
If youre getting the same error i have, gallery thumbnails are taking an insane amount of space without reason.
I use this app alot and it does wonders.
Hope it helps.

sorry for bumping this but this issue is starting to annoy me. Since my last "Low on space" notification came on, i deleted a few games and that cleared the notification. ever since I have not installed any memory hogging apps then out of no where i get the "low on space" notification again, so i just left it and a couple of days the notification went away. it's happened a few times. Now the notification came back and my phone is acting up. I can not open Gallery, I can not receive SMS because it says no space. Viber force closes....arrrgh it's pissing me off. Not cool because i use this phone for work. I know for a fact that my internal memory should have free space because before the notifications i had 8-9gb of free memory. any suggestions or fixes?

i have had the same problem of missing disk space and used "Storage Analyser"
by LeveloKment, with root permissions it found what DiskUsage,Memory Map & DiskView could not find and that was thousands of logs located in system\data\log i deleted those logs and everything was fixed
this app gave the correct path size unlike the rest that i mentioned i hope that helped

thanks. but i've tried installing those apps and my phone tells me "insufficient memory". i've deleted a few files, which free'd up 125mb of space and still won't allow me to install those apps. Anyways, i checked system/data/log and i have a few files in there but not sure which to delete.

i deleted more files and was able to install Storage Analyzer. It showed a hidden folder containing a lot of thumbnail pictures, so i deleted that folder. In the app it shows i now have 8.48gb but in system settings under storage it says i have 192mb free and i still have the Low Memory notification. 8.48gb is about right because i took the time to look at all the folders on my internal memory.

since i dont know what steps you took i will need you to do the following in order to get more info
i will assume you are rooted:
1. tap on the 3 dots [top right corner]
2. tap on preferences
3. tap on expert options
and the check both boxes [important!!!]
4. tap on the bottom left icon
5. tap on data, let it finish, take a screenshot
6. tap on system let it finish take a screenshot
7. tap on storage/sdcard0 let it finish take a screenshot
8. also take a screenshot of settings>storage
post the screenshots here

For a quick and pain free method, just factory reset the phone, and run it on a stock firmware if you use a custom firmware.

this is getting annoying, just flashed lpD from scratch and yet again its happening again, what the hell is downloading here
Use other network monitoring apps like 3g watchdog and check the showing informations is correct.
also you can check with your Network provider, whether this truely happens or not.
Are you allowing google to sync your account? It may be downloading all your apps in the background (Or updating them)
I never tick any of the options after flashing/when setting the phone up...no background downloads
If it was me, I would be paranoid and think that somebody was hacking into my phone

err...why?
Sounds like your Play store updating your apps in the background. Put data or wifi on and open play store, press menu key and go to 'my apps'. If they're downloading click on the 'x' on the top right of the screen to 'stop all'.
You can also check settings --> Data Usage to see whats eating your data, its a feature of ICS
by the way how many apps u got????
what does the built in data usage app reports?? if the problem persists still after a full wipe then it may be (may be) a malware. so if you are sure its not because of sync or some other app then you can try formatting data, system along with your internal sd and external sd from cwm before flashing a new rom.
i agree with everyoen above. it might be google just syncing information
Ok here what happens, when ever I flash a new stock ROM after wipe, right after I log in using google, it start happening.
No its not my apps
As you can see its not play store either.
I checked it multiple times now.
Exact 90MB got downloaded every time.

Ok I'm trying it again, will full wipe, remove sdcard, flash using Odin, lets see what happens
No nothing changed, removed sdcard, full wiped, flash new lpd using Odin.
Right after I sign in though I have UN tick the auto restore option, it started and right nite its at 40 mb, it will stop at 90mb.
I'm assuming something got backup to google and now every time I sign in, it comes back like the contacts.
Is there any way I know what and where its storing the filles.
Does any one know a way to wipe google account from their servers, like the screen shot.
This is wiping some stuff not all, as after signing in, I don't get my last apps or stored passwords anymore but that 90mb still comes.

Deleting other files

It's probably used by programs you installed. If you don't care for those programs, try to uninstall them. That will free up some space.

"Others" is just the collection of all not video, not picture and not music files on your sd card.
It could be downloads, backups, system/cache files, app data (e.g. local maps, offline information, etc.), emails, messages, contacts, calendar entries, etc.
So, "Others" gives you nearly no additional information about what it is really.
You should have a closer look at your sd card content with a file explorer, such as ES File Explorer (free app from Google Play store).
Then browse your files.
Some suggestions:
1. Maybe you can remove all unused apps in menu "Settings" > "Applications" first. Some apps need much storage on your sd card - especially those with local/offline data.
2. And check your email/messages. Maybe you can remove all old entries to get more free space on your internal storage.
3. Check your download/browser folder(s). Maybe there is a high internet "cache". In most browsers you can set an option to remove the internet cache.
Good luck !

[Q] Killing Android Process Media

Create a "DCIM" and "cache" folder in your external SD.
Navigate to DCIM folder located in your internal SD, move all files to the external SD's DCIM folder (cache folder files go in your external cache folder).
So now you've got 2 DCIM folders, go to camera and set your External SD as a default storage.
Reboot.

Tnx. But which files should I move to external SD's cache folder?
How can i set External SD as a default storage for camera?

The idea is to leave the internal DCIM folder EMPTY.

I test it and this process is still running after reboot. Your issue is just for killing "MediaScanner" service which is one of media process services. My problem is for "DownloadService" service of Media process.
Disable locations then (maps & google now).

hi eshan453.. I have been facing the same problem for months.. tried your suggestions but didn't work here (after I cleaned data for media storage, gallery and download manager, media process disappeared from running apps.. but after reboot I see it there again! )
are you sure you don't have it anymore in running apps after some reboots?
thanks in advance!

Try to clear Data&Cache of Gmail, Google Apps, Checkin Service, Google Talk, Market and Google Play too.
Be careful that after reboot a media process with media scanner service is running and It's normal because it will end automatically after a few minutes from rebooting. But my problem was media process with download service which was permanently running after reboot.
yes I did know that, and I am sure the process running was downloadservice, not mediascanner..
btw after some researchs it seems I fixed the problem and got rid of media download service always running deleting mediauploader.apk from my gapps package before installing it...!
EDIT: media downloadservice is back again so it was not related to mediauploader... what the hell can be that??
it seems to me it appeared after running gmail for the first time.. but I will have to confirm that after some more investigations..
it's either Samsung apps, locations or your gallery.
Got TiBu? Freeze both SamApps & gallery upon reboot, see what happens.

actually it is the OP that should have opened the thread somewhere else (in android general for example, not in the samsung section, as it is a general android problem, not due to samsung apps/phones..)

hi...
i had a similar problem on my sgs2 (with cm 10.1-20130710-NIGHTLY-i9100). it turned out to be a bug that was filling the folder /data/log with log files because of connection problems with the cellular network. the log files were using up more than 1 gb of space. if you have root you could take a look if that's using up your space.

Seems /data partition is full. It's unaccessible without root.
I have looking similar situation 2 times, and solved with root magiic.
First time my external sdcars got a corrupted file with strange name - nobody knows how it was, but then media indexer gone mad - it consumes cpu for a days, and fill /data volume with kind of incomplete indexes.
Happy end was - to fix extenal sdcard filesystem, then clear media indexer data.
second case was caused with flickr uploader program. because of error in program (now it fixed) it writes a tons of data into log file, pllaced inside /data. Was fixed by removing program with all application data.
Both of that cases was fixed technically without a root, but first step was running "Storage Analyser" in root mode - to find folder with abnormal large size on /data partition.

paranoidisc tell truth. I run a filesystem check and fix on my PC, because error was at SD card.
you still can run a check filesystem on a PC unil filesystem is FAT and volume can be exported via USB as block deice ("usb storage").
or u can try this method suggested by @esd from NeatRom
Install this on your PC

connect your phone in mass storage mode and delete it using unlocker.

[Q] [Help] Insuficient Storage Available

Yes. I know you're going to tell me to use the search or google, etc. But believe me when I say I have tried a lot already.
I'm getting this error when I try to install or update almost every APK on my Android. SOME will install or update and I can tell you there's nothing to do with file size. The storages seem to have plenty of free space, apps install smoothly when I factory reset my phone, but after a few days I start getting this annoying error.
I'm running the latest Nightly build from CyanogemMod for LG p720h (Yea, it's not stable and I know I should expect some... erm... bugs). It's Android 4.1.2.
I know the Internal Storage is emulated and have tried many many many fixes I found in this very forum and all over the internet. I'm a game developer so I know a few things about adb shell/logcats but couldn't find/understand anything analizing those during an APK install. I can provide logs, etc.
Can anyone help me find out how to solve this problem? Any idea of what's going on?

Is because your phone doesn't have enough ram(storage for apps) to hold those apps. If you have an sd card you can use AppMgr III (App 2 SD):

You can move apps to either internal or external storage

I was able to install this app but it didn't work, it says the primary external storage is emulated. The Storage manager says it has 548mb free space on my internal storage which should be plenty.
And even if I uninstall an app 50mb big I can't install other apps, even if they're 1MB or less. I don't think it has anything to do with "real" available storage.

apps don't use internal storage, they use a partition inside the internal, which is why you dont get all the storage on the box.

So, how I check how big is this partition and what files are there so I can move them and free some space?
Edit: Found the df command and got this:
Click to collapse
the app tells you what you can and can't

It's not working for me, any better idea for debugging this problem?
It's not related to log files too, I can't even find the log folders.
