CWM junk files: How to remove? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

CWM eating lots of space on my External SD card.
Since I flashed custom ROM, I always use to take backup before upgrading to new version or when ever needed but I don't need all of them I need just current backup.
I have following folder in
Clockworkmod folder
---backup ----StockROM (2GB) ----LatestROMNexus5 (17mb)----blobs (4.14GB)
See attachment. I gess the blobs folder having junk files.
Can anyone help me to delete unwanted files from CWM?

As long as you're absolutely positive you don't need the it, you can always use a file manager like Solid Explorer to delete redundant backups, zips, etc.

I suggest you make a copy of the blobs folder to your root directory, then copy to your computer as a back up.
Then slowly delete files one at a time see what each does to your phone till your blobs folder is empty, it maybe time consuming but you will not lose any important files.
Any good file explorer will allow to delete files.

Look at a post by "D3VIOUS".He explains what to do/not to do.
Youll find it by searching for "blobs".
Its a new feature in cwm6.

Blobs folder contains ALL your backups!

Choose the "Free unused backup data" in recovery, should only delete the unused stuff but maybe worth backing up just in case. Personally this blobs malarkey started to annoy me so I just changed the default backup file type back to tar files (also in recovery).

Thanks , "Free unused backup data" does the job... 4.14 GB to 1.36 GB.

Ouch, you might be out of luck man, might need to get a new phone as theres no real known "way" of restoring the backups of /efs folders or nvdata.bin etc on this phone yet , give this thread a read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1753833 its a known issue that can occur after flashing a rom on this phone... good luck.
edit, usually to save this kind of stuff you need to backup your efs folder, meaning that a nandroid backup nor a tibu backup can't help you with this; it needs to be done separately.

Out of curiosity, how do you backup those files separately?

If your rooted use a root enabled file explorer (I use Root Explorer) and open it up to /. There should be a folder called “efs". Simply copy that folder and place it on your internal or external sd, then for safe keeping place it on your laptop/computer

I've been nervous about flashing anything else since I've read about 4 cases like this. I'm so freakin happy I found this thread! I've found the efs folder your referring to, but I don't know if I should copy the efs folder to my external storage or open it & just copy the IMEI folder to my external storage? Your help would be so very much appreciated.
Maybe someone should put this in general and try to get it stickied, as it seems like a necessary preventive maintenance?
Edit: I just backed up the whole folder to be safe, and I'm going to make a general post referring to this problem.

GAPPS

Can we reorganize the applications inside the 'Gapps_ ics_ xxxxxx.signed zip'?
I mean can we eliminate or add some more applications inside of CWM flashable zip file, instead of working with TitaniumBackup to restore our own favorite applications after every wipe Rom Flash ?
I mean just deleting or adding some xxxxx .apk files...
Do you think it works ?
You could probably just make your own gapps zip with titanium so you could always flash the ones you want

I did not know TB has such feature though I have been using it for a long time..
I use it w/ batch feature to restore my apps after every flash.
I will try to find out how to create CWM flashable zip file contains my favorite apps.
Edited,
I found 'create update zip' under settings.
I created zip file from user apps but the file created is only 3 mb though I have araund 100 apps installed and backedup by TB.
it seems it made only for itself not all the other backedup apps..
Am I wrong ?
How to all together apps?
Titanium can only make an update.zip which flashes Titanium.
Feel free to use 7zip to add or remove apks directly from the gapps zip.

Sorry for the confusion, I guess I just assumed that with all of TB features "create update.zip" would do more than just flash itself. Guess I should try a feature before suggesting it - duh

Cleaning Blobs

On my phone SDCard, (not the external) I have a folder, \clockworkmod\blobs that is 1.3GB big and has 2300+ folders in it. I went looking for what blobs are & they seem to be code parts. I have used CF-Root from Chainfire and I think that installed a CWM - are these files related to that or can I delete them?
I'm running the latest JB leak DLI5 and CF-Root, other than that, there's ROM TOolbox Pro but I don't see why that would have cwm files. I did have another clockworkmod (it gave a better Recovery menu so if anyone knows which it was I'd like to know ) a while back but have reset/wiped prior to flashing JB.
Those blobs are your nandroid backup, if you delete them your backup will be gone.
"It's all in the game yo, all in the game..." - Omar Little
The blobs method is the newer way in which cwm makes the backups.. The backup folder contains the links to the actual files in the blobs folder.. So only the files which have changed between two backups are saved in the blobs folder.. It is the smarter and efficient way of backing up..
However if don't want this to happen.. You can change the backup type to tar from blob before making the backups.. If you are using touch recovery..
Cwm automatically frees up space or deletes the redundant/unnecessary files before every backup..
Moral of the story.. Don't touch the blobs..
You have been zooo==>ted
Sankuverrymuchness... Didn't want to clean them before knowing and they have survived 3 different JB installs so figured I'd ask.
Touch Recovery - is that the one in ROM Manager? I located the download I had used before - it was RM and has the CWM Touch flash option so I figure it was that I used before.
Back on subject, now that I have changed by phone, I plan to do another Nandroid. From the replies, if I don't care to keep the old BU, I can remove these ones and run the nandroid BU and it will re-create the blobs with all my new system/apps/etc?
(I'm trying to keep the phone as clean as possible so I figure I might need to remove the old Nandroid files before making one that backs up my current setup?)
You will find the touch recovery 6.0.1.2 in the original development section . You will have to flash the recovery via odin. Don't delete the blobs.. Just go boot into recovery and go to backup and restore.. From there delete the backup your want to remove.. Cwm will free up the unused space on next backup.. Or I believe the is also an option to free up space there..
But if you had made the earlier backup using non touch recovery 5.x..You will have to use this recovery to delete your backup.. As touch version will not see this backup..
Don't delete the backups manually.. Or if you want to really do it just delete the backup folder from clockworkmod/backup.. Don't ever touch the blobs..

Again, thanks Zoot... I did as you suggested and now the Blobs in the SDCard are gone and I have a fresh set over on the external card. I also made a zip of my system which I presume means I now have a ROM file that can be flashed at a later time to put things back to how they are now?

[Q] How does it look a Xperia S nandroid?

Hello. I'm coming from a SGSII and now feel like a total noob with my new Xperia S. I´m already updated to ICS, unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. Then while i was rooting the phone, use the CWM to make a nandroid backup. However when i go to the clockworkmod folder there is a total new type of archive that i not used to know. Normally in my SGSII there is a lot of files, with the Xperia S i just have one file "system.ext4.tar", wich is 549 mb in size. Is that it? Is that my backup?
Thanks in advance! :good:

That is the system partition backup. You should have a data, a cache, and some others. If your CWM is 6%, there will be also a blobs folder.

I use the CWM-SuperSU-v0.92, then I proceed like others CWM, just enter in backup/restore option, then backup, and then is just a lot of NO's and one YES. It never asked me for a selection.

I have this folder \clockworkmod\backup\1970-04-23.01.20.31 (weird date by the way) and inside the folder is just one file: system.ext4.tar
I can open that file with WinRar, but inside the archive there aren't any of the folders you mentioned
Not inside it, but together with it. Flash the advanced stock kernel. It has a stock kernel with recovery (date bug fixed) and some other things.

I was just reading about that:
Advanced Stock Kernel
I'll give it a try!
Thanks mate!
Well... I try the Advanced Stock Kernel.
All fine with the instalation, my phone boot fine and the CWM looks fine too. However i still have my doubts with the backup. This time the backup is more like i used to know with my SGSII but the files are realy tiny. There are 6 files in total and the file boot.img is the bigger one, it has just 20 Mb. So in total my backup has 6 files with a total amount of 20,4 MB... it's that normal???
By the way, the wierd date is still there.
Edit: I almost forgot something, there is a new folder inside the \clockworkmod, the new one is \blobs, wich has a lots of folders inside. Should i kept safe this new folder?
Yeah. Also, download ROM manager to manage the backups.
"I got my values. So you can keep yours, OK?"
yeah the backup is somewhat small but no worries, all your files are in there. dont you like it less mb on backup, but when you restore it comes back to a big file .
What about the \blobs folder. Anyone know what it is that folder?

The rest of the backup.
@ALL: Someone knows an app that can explore this new backup format? Neither App Extractor and Nandroid Explorer works.

[Q] Dual Boot - ROM backup

I'm using GoogyMax (have also used Siyah) and running Purelook HD Rom along with Slimbean as 2nd ROM. Right now I have my phone exactly how I like it but I also like trying new versions. It gets confusing doing Nandroid in each ROM and running backups from both using TB (Titanium) or MBR (My Backup Root) and recently I managed to stuff things up and had to rebuild from scratch.
Is there a way to do a Nandroid and get the entire package backed up? I am presuming in Slimbean backup I get only that ROM (it's around 1.1GB) and the same for Purelook (it's around 2.17GB) It would be good if I could simply boot to recovery and run one Restore and be back to my full setup.
Or am I mistaken in the idea Purelook, based on 4.1.2 stock, would be 2 times the size of Slimbean?
Shouldn't nandroid in CWM backup both Roms as the second is a kind of subset of the first regarding folder structure?

No, 2nd ROM is:
/sdcard/.secondrom
This is why it's best to use Siyah recovery to manage nandroid backups for 2nd ROM. However, since /sdcard/.secondrom should contain all the ROM stuff (including data) IIRC, shouldn't you just be able to rename that to /sdcard/.secondrom_OLD and reformat a new /sdcard/.secondrom?
Thanks for the replies.
I am unable to locate the /secondrom using ES File Explorer. Going to / and searching for 'secondrom' gives me no result. secondrom is deinitely there though - I just booted into it. Either it's a setting in ES that I need to change so I can see it (I'm using ES File in the 1st ROM) or I am not understanding how the folder set up works with dual boot. (or possibly, at all )
I guess, unless there is something more specific to find on here, I will have to backup everything then try a restore of each nandroid and see what it gives me.
Its .secondrom, meaning hidden file. Have you enabled hidden files?
On 4.1, /sdcard is /data/media but on 4.2, its /data/media/0 so you'll need to use root explorer permissions to browse and check /data/media if you're on 4.2 as it may appear "missing" as per link in my signature
