[Q] Logic Board Swap? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all on the xda, hope you're all doing well.
Once again I prove my nooby prowess by bombarding the forums and hopefully asking a question a few others have lingering.
A local seller has a Galaxy SII for sale for £70 as it's got an IMEI bar on it.
If I were to take the S2 and put my logic board in it, would that also transfer the IMEI and my current system of ParanoidAndroid?
I know it sounds like quite a stupid question but the opportunity could be there for me to have what is essentially a brand new S2 in noble black for 70 quid as my screen has been smashed by a blundering drunkard who thought they'd try and bottle me and instead, hit my phone.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and as the weekend fast approaches, may I wish everyone on the forums a good one
Peace out

When you say logic board are you referring to the mother board?
I'm no expert, but the way I see it, if you replace the whole motherboard and all components of that phone with yours, it should work since it sunds similar to replacing a broken screen+digitizer which many have done successfully.
Maybe some of the folks here who know more can give a verdict, but IMO £70 for a brand new unlocked S2, I'd give it a shot.
Good luck!

Of course it should work. The other way would be to use the screen off of the new one and put it on yours(depends on model colour).
I would also suspect the other phone will have more problems than hes telling you.

Thanks for the responses, I found that the phone was just locked out via a lock pattern haha! Guy sold it but will be getting another for sale soon as he works within a mobile phone industry with Orange (which I'm on) so that's alright how difficult does everyone reckon a complete reshell including screen and digitizer would be? thanks guys

that would be an expensive affair though

If you can back yourself to do it, it'd be pretty cheap. Many vids on YouTube showing you how to replace the screen and digitizer. Seems fiddly..but worth a try if you know what you're doing. Getting it done professionally would be a tad expensive.

hi, do you know where to buy a working logic board even used? Can't find on ebay

Yeah eBay.

You can try Amazon...

Ive dropped my xda :'(

I dropeed my XDA 2 and it now has a big chunk of case missing near the on/off button. luckily (i think) its on the black plastic bit which seems to be fairly easy to get off,
but can anyone help me find spares?
I've been to the o2 site for help but that site is as much use as an ashtray on a moterbike if you ask me :x
Any help would be appreciated
Elmo
Check on e-bay to see if anyones is selling a dummy XDA 2 and change the casing over, short of that go to the O2 shop and see if they can put you in touch with anybody who can get the parts for you.
try http://www.pdasmart.com/pdaphone.htm
see this for comments http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4070&highlight=screen+replacement
also search this site, I've seen many people who had their XDAs broken
Thanks for the ideas
I keep checking ebay for cases, broken units and such like but havent found anything so far..
I hadn't thought about the dummy unit...Funny thing is... I did see a dummy unit for sale just before i bought the real thing and it went for about a tenner  . I think thats called 'sods law'
Also checked a few other sites using the link above and emailed some companys cheers for that.
I reckon there a market here for parts..... I mean as if they wont get dropped at some stage? You can get replacement pc/laptop cases and you dont walk round with them in your pocket do ya??
just need to find the company thats selling them and buy a shed load of them.
Maybe these will be of benefit to some people, a sort of dropping preventative:
https://www.egrips.com/catalog/prod...d=290&osCsid=31fe81c28fe1d8b6445ce6da229a745b
Failing that, super glue your device to your hand.
had the exact same thing happen to me - plastic above the on/off button. I tried poking some black electrical tape down there and it looked pretty good at a glance, until the tape's stickiness wore off.
Same thing here!
I managed to chip one small piece off the black antenna cover very close to the on/off button. But I used a small amount of my daughter's Play-Doh (molding clay) and carefully filled the small hole with that, then when it hardened, I painted it black with a permanent marker
It worked just fine.
However, I want to replace it as soon as the parts become available...
Best regards,
Rayan
Cool site this - 'BlueTack' wasn't mentioned once!

Alperin1, My guy! I have store your pdf the day I managed to injure my Streak!
Thanks for that..
But, again.
If any warranty solution is available. I would want it to work, before I am compelled to !
so, I guess.. There is no one here in Dell.
(Or anyone from India.. who has done it?)
Care,
Sony.
You can exchange it with Dell for a Refurbished for $250.00 if you are the registered owner or replace the lcd yourself for around $100.00.
Those are your options. Calling Dell other than to do an out of warranty exchange for 250.00 would be a waste of time since this would not be covered under the normal warranty.
My Otterbox Defender should be here today to protect my newly replaced screen.. .
May I can make you a little better...
Just take a look at the picture...

Like I said,
I am in India, and I dont think I will be making any US trip soon!
So, the exchange / replacement at $250 is not in scope currently!
I am serious about the 100 bucks replacement screen, but, again,
Like I said, It will be like 200 bucks here in India.
That's the problem!
Thanks for your input.

Hey mate,!
I looked at the pic.
that does not make me feel better!!
I am even more sad, that you have a Smashed-up Streak too!!
I agree my damage is not as bad as yours.
I mean I can still operate the phone and all.
(I dont know if its safe to use it like that?!!, Is it?)
Two questions:
Are you from India (Or any country which does not have good Dell support!)?
What did you do about the damaged screen?
Edit: I was trying to check for the replacement screen from ebay, but, the 100 bucks screen does not ship to India!!!
If any of them does.. Puhleeez, let me know!
Care,
Sony.

The more I see of these cracked screen reports the more I wonder how long before a class action lawsuit is filed against Dell for this problem. Gorilla Glass be damned.
About what I see already the original case is so week, first problem the streak was droped on the floor from about 1 metre, that was enough to made a smal crack on the glass, so week unfortunately

Hello everyone,
I hate this to be my first post. I've tried to research what to do but with a combination of case by base variables and being new to the Smart Phone world I could really use some advice.
Here is the picture of the damage done. I'm with ATT and don't have phone insurance. I'm struggling with multiple facets of life and this happening to my first smart phone within a month makes a grown man want to cry.
Here is the picture of the damage done: postimage[dot]org/image/bu0b0rsyz/
Please excuse me cheating on posting a link Admins, I only have the best of Intentions.
The major hit was at the return button. From what I've gathered, the screen is actually adhesively one with the LCD. I briefly talked with a phone repair company who said it would be over 200 dollars.
I looked on ebay and found a lens/screen replacement for $20.00 - ebay[DOT]com/itm/Replacement-NEW-Glass-lens-screen-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-i717-Black-TOOLS-/170922060617?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cbbfab49
Please tell me that this will suffice?
I was using a full sleeve case which needs upgrading as well. I've heard Otterbox recommended several times which I'm thinking about ordering.
Help is much appreciated, and I hope to eventually return the favor to this community once I start to catch up in knowledge.
Thanks,
Kenny

Hopefully one of the elder sages will post and point you in the right direction.. no matter the case, stuff can still happen.. hell, I busted the screen on an iPhone with an Otterbox.. granted the screen hit the corner of a table so that's not a run of the mill issue..
But definitely invest in a decent case, especially if you don't have insurance on your device..
And if you do decide to replace the screen yourself, read, read, read, read and then watch a few videos on how to do it proper.. no need for a risk of making the situation even worse..

The $200 -- LCD, digitizer, and front glass -- are replaced as a unit. Its many screws and parts, but there is a good youtube video for this procedure.
So there's no 30 dollar repair as I've seen mentioned before? It's still functional, will it get worse as I use it? Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting worse?
Please tell me an underwhelming, nondramatic few foot drop mistake isn't going to cost what I essentially make in 2 weeks, doing stressful and labor intensive work. =\
Thanks for the replies.
Three feet is a long way to fall for a $600 piece of some of the most advanced handheld electronics ever made. Pay the $200 and let a professional fix it before you make a bad problem worse and end up with 5 pieces of what used to be a smart phone.
I'm sorry about your your phone. Its happened to all of us at one point or another.

[Q] Where to get replacement parts

Anyone know where I can get a screw for the i717. I need it for the back plate. It's bugging the hell out of me knowing one screw is missing. OCD I know. I don't want to try ebay because the last time I ordered one for an iphone, it was some cheap stuff.
I would be taking out another screw and take it to the hardware store.

Your welcome ..
I was a bit Leary buying from them at first, as I am from most online retailers, but with these folks, I've been treated beyond good at every turn.
Top notch customer service, and fast delivery at very fair prices.
One note, you are buying from an international retailer based in China....But
They Fedex direct ship, and never miss a beat.
I continue to use and refer them, and prices for parts are sweet as well....g
I have had great experience with tvmall.com
Why not open your old phone and 'borrow' a screw? It works for the Army. The Supply seargent had a technical name for it. Anyone?
hi, you can maybe try getting a screw from another device your not using any more or you can look for one in an electronics store. i think it would be pretty hard to find just one small screw online.

Central PA Riff Box for JTAGGING

OK guys.. Im about to suck it up and ordering a RIFF box (They're about 150-200 on ebay).
Wondering, IF I do... and I JTAG my DNA, would anyone else be interested in having me do it for them? I'd be looking at trying to get about $30 per phone, and the owner of the phone covers shipping to and from me (First class would be about $3 each way) and I could offer in person JTAGs. (I'm located in Reading, PA).
Let me know... (It's looking like I could have it in under 14 days (all orders come from China)
(I ask here because I did sort of the same thing when the XTC was floating around for some of the older HTC phones and it paid for itself in about 3 months)...
What experience do you have taking apart a phone of this sort? Personally, I'm very concerned with structural condition of the phone after. Are you going to do it to yours when you get it? Maybe post pics?

So glad you asked... Already done..
I will post pics tomorrow... when im sober and with a camera.
Met a gentleman in Philly this evening who had a riff box and some experience JTagging phones (Never did a DNA before.. but, then again, Neither did I).
That being said... Tomorrow, I will post "the secrets to Jtagging and unlocking a DNA (We actually didnt succeed in S-Offing my DNA, but we DID unlock the bootloader, and install CWM)
...The biggest thing I got from it all was flashing the SuperCID as 22222222... Then unlocking via HTC Dev (Full details will be supplied when im less... well, horizontal (Mostly, just a full run down of what we did to get to this point... not sure what parts were redundant or unneeded...)...
\
BUT!!! The phone can, to some degree, be fully rooted after 2.04 by a "general" novice... with some phone disassembly skills and soldering skills (And a $200 Riff box)...

I HAVE an unlocked DNA.. I TOOK the risk of learning how to do this procedure AND POSTED HOW TO DO IT... So, anyone who wants to do it themselves has all the knowledge to get where I did...
As for my "resume"... I wasnt offering one.
And I dont feel the need to prove my abilities when I am simply offering help to those around (and, Ive stated that I would post pics...)...
Only "damage" is on the top... and that's pretty much just because it's not completely snapped back together (Not pushing my luck to snap it all tight as I have to disassemble again and let a little slack out of one of the screws)... The only other cosmetic flaw is the red aluminum sticker above the volume button got knocked off (I need to 3M it back on)
Mind you, this was the fist HTC phone ive ever disassembled... (By deduction, also the first DNA) and it was the first time this phone was ever opened... (The knick on the top near the headphone jack is from me droping it... not from opening)...
Sorry about my finger in 2 of the pics... the camera wouldnt focus on the edge...
I'm in Palmyra, so a nice drive out to reading wouldnt be a problem. Once you have more phones under your belt.
