I definitely wanted this feature, and I'm glad I saw this topic.
While reading your reply, I immediately double-tapped my home button to launch my camera, and I attempted your recommendation of tapping the screen while recording a video. Tapping the screen did not work, but there's a camera snap-shot/shutter button. Tapping that icon actually takes a picture while recording a video!
Thank you! I recommend putting "solved" in the topic title. ^_^
I attached a screenshot. While recording a video, simply tap the icon above the red, recording icon. The border of the screen turns green to indicate your picture was taken.

[Q] Camera?

How can I take self portraits on the X2 when the only button to take pictures is on the main screen. I am having a hard time hitting the shutter button and not the options button. Is there any app or modification I can make to the phone to fix this!? Help!
Thanks!
ps I am not vary phone suave
Little Photo
You can try using little photo from the market which lets you take a picture just by tapping on the screen or using the volume buttons. theres also a camera mod in the forums that lets you use the search button to take a picture
heh, I'm with the OP, I not a shutter bug so hadn't used the camera much, but I found exactly the same thing. I kept trying to hit the shutter button and it kept sliding out the options menu...
I use vignette and can't recommend it highly enough! I use it as my sole camera and it works awesome. Shoots faster than stock and you can use volume keys or tap anywhere to take a pic. Also allows for 10x zoom which is actually handy and works decently.

[Q] Recording video with screen off?

Hello!
Is there any chance to recording video on SGS II with screen off?
I mean, when I start recording video, if I press screen on/off button video recording stopped.
May be somebody knows how to continue recording?
Thank you!
Simple Notepad can, its a sneaky Cam that keeps the screen black and can take pics or record, it even has an icon of a notepad so ppl don't suspect you're taking pictures of them

[Q] Touch-to-Focus while taking video?

Has anyone heard or seen any demos/reviews/preview videos of someone taking a video and re-focusing by touching the screen? Relying on only autofocus on the S2 made many unfocused videos unwatchable.
The One S has it (I played with it), as well as iPhone and the Razr.
YAY! Update:
According to the manual, touch to focus while recording video is confirmed!
5 Select [REC button] to start recording.
●● To change the focus, tap where you want to focus. To
focus on the centre of the screen, select [AF button].
●● To capture an image from the video while recording,
select [STILL SHOT button].
6 Select [REC button] to stop recording.
The video is saved automatically.

Update 2:
On another note, it looks like anti-shake is available for video, too, unless it was a copy/paste mistake from the Photo/Still Camera section of the manual.
Anti-Shake
Activate the anti-shake feature to reduce
blur caused by the device’s vibration or
movement.

On TW ROMs while taking a video? Are we talking ICS? I haven't tried taking a video on a TW ICS ROM yet.
Regarding the S2, I'm not the only one who sees this limitation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1541019
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471112
Anyways, I'm concerned because I know stock ICS doesn't do it, so I hope the S3's camera app finally has TOF while videoing.
I flashed to the stock ICS TW ROM and verified that touching the screen while videoing does not allow for Touch-to-Focus, either. There's nothing in the settings to allow it either. When I touch while videoing, it says "Zooming is not supported while recording Full HD Video". When not filming at 1080p, it just zooms instead of focus.
Are you using a custom ROM, 3rd party app, or modified camera.apk?
Yeah I've seen many videos where this was done, Samsung even added automatic face recognition when you take a photo and instantly sends them to all your friends in that photo.
That's all fine and dandy, but sometimes, you want to control where you want to focus. Short of an unfriendly manual focus slider, touch-to-focus is a quick way to kick the focus algorithm in gear.
Relying on the auto focus to adjust itself doesn't work well on the S2. Sometimes it tries to refocus when it's already in focus and everything becomes blurry for the next 2-3 minutes, ruining the video. Happens a lot in low-light conditions (indoor).

Still Shot Feature While Recording on .211?

Quick question for those of you running stock .211: I know one of the ICS aosp camera features is the ability to snap stills while recording video. Once you press the record button, the camera rotate button turns to a shutter icon that you can use to snap stills while recording. I'm currently on .215 and the feature is there but i don't recall seeing it on 211.
Could someone on .211 simply start recording a video and see if the still shutter option is there? If not, i figured I'd add it to the list of differences between the roms.
Yep just checked it and its there in my .211 built ROM

In motions its screenshot which could be taken by swipe palm if u have ever used 4.1 firmware there was a little camera icon while playing any vid. Which is lost in 4.3 but there a difference in both screenshots taken by swiping palm capture everything visible on screen but that feature capture just the pic of video frames
