So I'm coming from the Apple world and I love having the Atrix because I can just use any microUSB cable that is around. I have a question about using different chargers though. The charger that can with the phone is 5.1V at 850mA but I have some extra Motorola ones that are lying around that are only 5.0V at 550mA. Will using the other charger degrade the performance of the battery over time or will it just take longer to get a full charge?

Well it'll definitely take longer to charge but *could* cause problems in the battery. My guess is that it will judging by how others have had an "on and off" problem with lower-amperage chargers. Instead of just charging slowly the charging sort of stops and starts randomly. Leads to the assumption that the transformer in the phone itself is having trouble accepting the power. Constantly connecting and disconnecting power when charging a battery can have consequences later on.

The Atrix is really picky with the chargers. I recommend to use only the original charger or the chargers that came with the docks. People described the weirdest things from touchscreen problems to not charging at all. Charging via USB cable doesn't work either (or it is very slow), neither on the computer nor in the car.

In my opinion....
I wouldn't go as far to say "use only original chargers/Motorola chargers". The underlying issue is just like hotleadsingerguy said, lower-amperage chargers.
If you avoid these chargers, you should be fine. My Motorola Atrix charging brick/USB cable are still in their original packaging, inside the phone's box, tucked away in a cabinet.
At home, I have a few Blackberry MicroUSB chargers which I've used on my Captivate (not picky), and now they charge the Atrix without problems. They are 5.0V/700mA chargers.
At work, I pieced together some chargers from Monoprice, buying USB (female plug) power adapter with long USB -> MicroUSB cables. The power adapter from Monoprice is 5.0V/1000mA, and I use these chargers on my Atrix without a problem...and that's also using like 15 feet long cables.

I'd probably say your 550mA charger is not going to cut it, since I've seen some other threads mentioning charging problems with ~500mA chargers.

Has anyone else used the PowerGen car charger with the Note? I have a handful of other ones that all claim to fast-charge devices, but apparently it only works with iPhones and iPads. But since the PowerGen unit is on the list, can I assume people have used it and confirmed it will give me a 1A charge rate on the Note? I need a charger that can keep up with the Note occasionally drawing 1.4 A or more (display 100% brightness, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth all active, running Navigation).
A quick search for "powergen" in this forum only brings up the above thread.
Works like a champ. My battery was charging at 1600mAh while streaming soundcloud and using navigation. Definitely does the job.
I am using my car charger for galaxy tab 10.1 (2.0 amp) and it is working much better than any of the 1 amp chargers I have tried, OEM, boxwave, etc...
I also use the GT 101. 110V charging brick, so when I travel, only one brick and two cables. My experience is that the 2 amp charger works really well and will charge the phone while using GPS full time, where the OEM charger and other 1 amp chargers either maintain charge, or slightly discharge.
Thanks for the confirmation! Of course, now I discover Amazon won't ship that to Canada, and amazon.ca does not carry it. :crying: I'd go see what TELUS has to offer, but I'm sure it will be A) expensive and B) not have dual USB ports, or perhaps not even a detachable cord.
If you do find one, also buy a charge-only usb cord.

Is that still needed if the charger itself correctly supports fast charging? The cord I use now is the one from my Touchpad. I get 1 A to the Note from the AC plug, and the Touchpad gets around 1.8 A. I do also have a charge-only cable (much thinner cord, only two wires), but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

The cord from the touchpad is probably wired correctly internally for fast charge. I bought a similar dual car charger and did not see a difference with the micro usb sync cable. I only saw a difference with a charge-only micro usb cable. The phone sees what pins are connected and determines if it is going to charge in usb charge mode(<=500ma) or AC charge mode(>=500ma).

So you use the Touchpad USB micro cable to charge your Note in the car? I thought the cable is too short? I am looking for a LONG USB micro cable that is shorted so it will give >500mA.
I am planning to buy the PowerGen but I need recommendation on the CORRECT USB cable that is long enough.

I don't think it is, because it also works as a normal USB data cable. If pins 2 and 3 are shorted (D+ and D-), then the cable become "charge only" and cannot be used for data.
I bought a similar dual car charger and did not see a difference with the micro usb sync cable. I only saw a difference with a charge-only micro usb cable.

Then it sounds like that car charger was an "iPad-compatible" one, i.e.: it does not have D+/D- shorted out to indicate to non-Apple devices that it is capable of more than 500 mA.

The cable is about a meter in length. I only need about half that to reach from the plug to the phone mount on the dash.

So then how does it charge fast then? If the cable isn't shorted? Motorola does the same thing. IIRC its a shorted setup to allow for fast charging. All of my USB cables come from Samsung, HP, and Motorola and I use them as data cables as well

You short the pins inside the AC adapter or car charger, rather than the cable. If I understand correctly, the danger of using a charge-only cable is if you plug it into an actual USB port that isn't designed to supply more than 500 mA. Your device could then try to pull down, say, 2000 mA and potentially damage the power supply on your laptop or desktop.

I'm using the Rocketfish 3.1A Model# RF-M657D with my Note. While using Google Nav, lowest brightness, keys backlight off, Sync off, HSPA+, the phone still loses charge (albeit, slowly). I'm assuming this is because the charger is not internally shorted between pins two and three as it is marketed as a iPad/iPhone charger. I'm using a Belkin Data/Charge cable so I know that is not shorted.
I have been doing some reading and last night, I purchased the "Satechi Smart Adapter Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S (I can't post links yet, google it.) so I will report back when I receive and pair it with the Rocketfish.

Where/how do you get this info? Asking because I'm curious to see how my car charger does. It has usb ports rated at 2A, and I think it's 2A shared instead of per port, but want to see how it actually does when plugged in.

My rocket fish model must put out more than yours. My pic is above your post. With Google Nav, Google play music (streaming, not native music), full sync, brightness to at least 50% it only lost 4% over 30-40mins.

From what I read, your charger is an .5 amp.
It's not like my phone dies or anything, but it'll lose like 5% an hour and I could be exaggerating. Are you using a charge-only cable or modded cable/charger at all? Like I said, I think this phone is only pulling down 460mA without said mod and I find 1600mA to be incorrect as I read the Note will only pull down 960mA max. We'll see what this adapter does for my charge times.

They only thing I'm using is that exact setup posted. RF adapter and a Motorola atrix desktop dock charge cable.. (basically just a longer version of the standard wall charger)

OK, I lied, I'm using the OEM cable that came with the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the longer cable from the desktop dock. I just checked my car and that's the cable that's in there.

Car chargers work much slower than a wall charger because of the output of it. If you have the screen on, using gps, and listening to music at the same time it won't charge or it will actually drain.

Probably, the car charger is putting out just enough amps to activate charging mode, but not enough to charge with any discernable speed
I would look for a more reputable charger brand. I have found that cheapie chargers just don't perform well. Especially with the 2 amp requirement our devices need. A 1 amp verizon mobile charger with the micro usb factory attached and ment realistically for my wife's s3 1 amp requirement is adequate to provide a stable but long charge time for my note 2. Remember, some power distribution is lost simply in the usb connection between a cheap 1 amp charger and the usb cable plugged into it. Another useful addition for mobile charging would be an ac/dc inverter that allows your factory home 2 amp charger to plug into your vehicle. That would be reasonably clean 110 v ac to dc at 2 amp from your genuine samsung home charger. Better chance of getting the charging capacity you require. Also, don't forget to chech your usb cable. It may look fine, but could be stretched or damaged causing a bad charge connection. But definitely avoid cheap car chargers. Not only can they work sporadically, they may actually damage your phone.

I have tried charging my phone with it turned off when its charging in my car i dont use it i just let it charge but it doesnt work. Its ok not a big deal i can charge it at home and get a good day and a half on a full charge. I was just wondering if there was a way to fix it.

This, I just didn't feel like explaining it all. Also using an inverter can cause problems with strain on the electrical load of the vehicle though. If you have a big truck, they are safe to use. If you have a civic, I wouldn't use one.

I used one all the time when I had my Civic Si to power mine and a friends laptops when in town, we didn't have high speed at our houses and the provider wanted 50k to bring it, and I never experienced any issues with electrical strain. Im not saying it doesn't happen but with the newer vehicles it isn't that much of an issue.

I just got my LG G2 yesterday. I also have a Nexus 7 2013 and an old Galaxy Nexus. I have a Nexus 7 charger at home and work. I have a modified Fast Charge 2.0A Car charger.
My N7 and GN could "AC" charge off of all of them. The G2 is "slow" charging off all of them. They are all 3 different models of chargers, all above 2.0A so there is plenty of oomph to get it the power it needs.
So whats up with that?
I just tested it. It isn't the Charger but the damn cables. Does LG have some kind of funky pinout for the charger?! Using the supplied cable, it is working on all of my other chargers. If I use my old cable it "Slow Charges" even with the included LG USB Charger.
So something in that cable is altering the amount of power it gets. That SUCKS!
My Nexus 7 will AC charge off the LG Cable. So it's something with that cable that the G2 likes.
LG is notorious for changing stuff around. On the G2x they flipped around the headphone control pins and came out with an additional headset for extra $$ which rendered every other headset with music controls useless. So basically now I have to go and replace all of my USB cables with something LG likes (which will almost be impossible to order something online). Anyone else having issues with other chargers? Luckily it IS taking a charge but just at USB speeds (Slow charge). I use Qi Charging at home for at night, so that isn't an issue but in my Home Office, Work Office, and (especially) my Car I need a fast charge. In the Car, using GPS with the screen on will still deplete on USB power. A fast charge is the only one that can still charge the battery under a heavy load. Similar to watching a movie probably.
All my USB cables woks fine. I would use the included Amazon Kindle cable since it is easily the longest cable with out issue. However older cables do have the problem you described but I suspect it isn't something LG specifics but rather the amount of pins connected in the cables.

I found that my Samsung cables from my S4 and Note 2 work fine with the G2, but any of my other cables, whether they be the cheap $3 ones, ones from other phones, or expensive ones, only charge at the slow rate. I'm hoping we can get a custom kernel that removes that restriction.
So it charges a little slower. Is this a major issue? If so, use the charger provided. Failing to see the problem here.
Maybe its just me. I get that a lot.

Have you tried going to settings>general>PC connection and setting "charge phone" there, as the phone limits the current allowed through if it's on MTP because MTP simply can't handle it.

I am also using N7 2013 charger and it charged pretty fast. But now i'm also trying out a speakerdock. I don't know how fast that is but the n7 charger is pretty fast.

I have the same problem OP. if I don't go to bed early enough for slow charge to feed this monster battery I wake up below 100%. It really isn't that big of an issue because the battery lasts anyways but I don't like leaving home below 100%.

The Problem is that it is annoying. Not only is it charging "Slower" but also throw a icon up in the Status bar that you can't dismiss that says "Slow Charging. To Charge faster, use the original charger".
But I want to repeat that it is NOT the actual charger but the USB cables. It WILL fast charge (aka normal charge) using all of my various chargers WHEN I use specific USB Cables. Most of my cables will only slow charge, which is equivalent to a USB trickle charge that can't even charge it fast enough to power the screen. If you use the device in this mode, it still loses power with the screen on.
It just seems there is something in the cable itself that is either not connected or passing through the info to turn up the faster charging. I know the cables are Power+Data cables because I use them for ADB and MPT.
Most cables are not working. I've found a few that are. Unfortunately my 10ft desk cables and my curly car one is NOT working.
The Original Nexus 7 was picky about chargers. It wouldn't even see my car charger where my Galaxy Nexus and New Nexus 7 2013 both show AC (fast charge).
I think the difference between a slow charge and a fast charge is something like 0-100% on fast charge is 3 hours where it's like 9-10 on a slow charge. THAT is the problem.

Seems this is a legitimate case regarding the Verizon LG G2s AFTER they've received the latest OTA update. It will only charge normally on the included cable. All other cables will result in a Notification that the phone is "Slow Charging" and charges only on 500mAh. You cannot dismiss the notification. Which is the annoying part.

As of this posting, it affects all Verizon G2 users and there is no solution. We suspect it is just a Verizon bug. No other cables will charge normally.
No. Mentioned in that thread, my car charger from Verizon charges at ~1000mA. Long, curly, and thick. The new one with the LED and shorted pins. Attached cable and USB work on said charger. The problem is AWG, short, and voltage drops. I have yet to find a working usb cable though.
Mine (D802, EU model, GB variant):
- Belkin Charger 2.1A, N7 2013 cable -> slow charging
- N7 2013 charger + N7 2013 cable -> fast charging
So it's not just the cable; it's also dependent on the charger.
The voltage drop in the cable will cause the phone to draw a substantially lower charge. Therr doesn't seem to be anything unusual about the cable other than it being unusually good quality, being thick and short.
When charging, it's important having a charger with the data pins shorted, but I think most wall charger are. The slow charge warnings are something special in the Verizon models, I only get a slow charge warning when It's actually slow on my d802.
It will appear as though there is a difference of what will happen if there is a voltage drop in the cable based in your carrier model, but the hardware which charges the phone should be standard, albeit probably better quality than most other chargers.

I stopped worrying about cables, adapters, etc by using a TYLT VU wireless charger. It chargers both my Verizon lg g2 and my Nexus 7-2013 fully and quickly. My g2 takes only 2-3 hours and my Nexus is in a leather case.
No wworries, just lay either one on its 45 degee angle platform and forget about it. Truly a wonderful charger.
I have a Samsung Qi Charger. I don't worry about it but there is a software bug with the Verizon model since the OTA update. Another thread listed above tells of the details.

the solution is simple. just shortcircut data+ and data- and it will fast charge.
hopefully som Kernel hacker can build us a new Kernel. when the phone detect data connection it goes to 500mah. if u chortcircut them 1a+

This is NOT the case. The Verizon variant is very picky and requires a 24g USB 3.0 cable or else it will force slow charging at 500mah.
There is a whole thread with findings thats like 30 pages long. The Verizon model is not behaving like the other variants, so unless you have a Verizon model with the latest OTA and have personally tested and found a working solution, then you need not comment.
This thread should be closed so random uninformed persons stop making false accusations. This thread was started over a real problem but didn't take off. Another thread was created that did, and it is linked above. This is a real problem with a real solution. All real findings and discoveries are listed in that active thread listed above.
This should be a place holder for searches but needs no new comments. Please direct all comments to the other thread linked above.

Is there a cable longer then the original that will charge like the original?
The cable is too short, and i cant find a longer one anywhere. I need one that would charge the phone fast like the original.

There is nothing special about the original cable, it is just a data cable/charge cable. It is the charger that is special. The stock charger is internally shorted to charge [email protected]?2 amps not [email protected] Get a good quality 6 foot data/charge cable from monoprice. The monoprice cables have small ends that fit on almost all cases with smaller USB holes. EBay cables are hit or miss.

Grab your stock charger, install Galaxy Charging Current on your phone and test different cables. You'll see that the stock cable charges much faster. This goes for car chargers too. I have a Samsumg OEM 2 A car charger that I tested with different cables. The difference between the stock cable and even good quality cables is notorious. What really isn't that special is the charger. Even a USB charging port from a laptop can provide more than 500 mA. By the way, you are confusing DC and AC currents.if you are referring to the 500 mA of the USB standard, they are DC too.
That being said, I too wish there was a 3 meter cable that could charge as fast as the Samsung original.

I bought my phone brand new from a local Verizon Corporate store and obviously my phone came with the Galaxy Note 3's standard white Samsung 2.1amp charger and white USB 3.0 charging cable. I needed extras and wanted to order something as close to stock performance and charging speeds that I could get without paying out the a$$ for a couple of real OEM wall chargers and cables from Verizon, so I did a little research and found a couple of good combos off Amazon that matched the same charging rates that the OEM charger/cable combo gives me.
I ordered an Amazon Basics 2.1amp output wall charger, this Amazon Basics 9ft long USB 3.0 cable, this small/low profile PNY 12volt/2.1amp "Rapid Charge" Car Charger, and this 8ft long Mediabridge USB 3.0 "SuperSpeed" Cable.
I tested combos of each cable(OEM White Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Cable, Amazon Basics Cable, and the Mediabridge Cable) with EACH charger(OEM White Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Wall Charger, Amazon Basics 2.1amp Wall Charger, and the PNY 2.1amp Car Charger) using the "Galaxy Charging Current" app and got the same results all across the board with each combo, even the Samsung Charger/Samsung Cable combo. So unless that app spits out skewed numbers on a consistent basis, I believe it's safe to say that as long as you get a decent quality charger that can truly pump out 2.1amps like the OEM Samsung Charger and a decent cable to pair up with whatever charger you purchase, there's no need to spend the big bucks and go OEM....unless you're just one of those kinds of people that HAS to have OEM everything just for the extra peace of mind and to make sure all of their accessories are of the same matching Samsung brand. I see no reason to spend that kind of money when a MUCH cheaper alternative will get the job done just the same, PLUS the "craftsmanship" and quality of the aftermarket chargers/cables I mentioned appears to be outstanding, if not maybe even a little better than the OEM Samsung combo...besides the fact that the fancy OEM cable has the glossy, white, square-shaped plugs at the each end of the cable with the "SAMSUNG" name emblazoned on them and those aftermarket cables gave me a hard time squeezing past the charger cutout on my Spigen Slim Armor Case(some shaving of the plug is necessary in order for them to fit through my Slim Armor charging cutout).
If you're not concerned with all that fanciness, save yourself quite a few bucks and opt for the cheaper alternatives...just do yourself a favor and do your research first...you WON'T be disappointed. :good::good::good:
You got lucky. I've tested about half dozen cables by now and none of them managed to deliver the same current as the stock cable. Out of curiosity, what current did you get? 1800 mA?
Yeah, it's mostly testing with the Galaxy Charging app on whether or not you get the max current or not. I got lucky that my wife's Lumia's data cable is at par with the stock cable and use that for Ingress sessions. I also use the HP Touchpad wall charger as a secondary charger, it gives out 2.1 amps, one of the best chargers around.

I have also tested with various combinations of the OEM sammy cable and charger, AmazonBasics 3' and 9' USB3 cables, a nexus 7 wall charger and an Anker 2.4W car charger. All did very well and charged around 1800mA. My laptop charges it at a little under 500mA.
I also had to shave the AmazonBasics end to fit with my Slim Armor case. I don't get why they made it so large in the first place, its HUGE. Also, the AmazonBasics cord is very thick and stiff, more like cable TV cable.

I'm with you. I've been using that cheap sprint 2amp dual use ac/car charger with the monoprice cables and it charges just as fast as the stock samsung combo.
By the way, ~9 feet (3 meters) is a long ways to charge something.
If you ever notice if you buy one of the cheap cigarette lighter chargers it shows USB charging in the battery properties. This limits it to around 500ma. It must be internally wired to charge at the USB standard. Now buy cigarette Lighter 'fast charger' and it will show AC charging in the battery properties. It must be internally wired to charge at a higher amperage.

No, just a good quality cable imho. Monoprice 6 footer or similar. Only one thing that bothers me with monoprice cable is the wire tends to pull out of the terminated end if you pull at it too much. What I love about them is the terminated ends are small.
