My S740 is now coming up to one year old. For various reasons I have had 2 batteries for the device which are both of a similar age.
Anyhow, normally I get a full days use out of a battery however on a very busy day I may end up changing to the 2nd battery around 5pm.
In recent weeks, every now and then the battery will be dead after only a few hours even under light use. After a full charge, it is fine again giving full days of use.
I have checked there are no programs running in the background etc and can't see any pattern to this.
This happens when using either of the batteries and is really annoying.
So if this random discharging a sign of the batteries failing or something more sinister? Has anybody else seen similar things? I am happy to buy a new battery but at £30 don't want to then find the same problems again

I've only been using this phone for about a month now and agree the battery can be quite erratic!
I don't think it's anything to with the phone 'failing'. I've had quite a few smart phones and to be honest it just seems to be common practice for these types of phones to have a strange battery life.
Some days from a full charge I can get up to 2.5 days! Other from a full charge it will run down completely in under a day.
I'm going to invest in one of those extended batteries, the battery capacity on those is more then double that of the standard battery. Sure it adds a bit more bulk to the phone but I kind of like that, will turn it into a proper beast!!
My phone's battery-life is also erratic (and limited anyway).
Always was, but with me also more now after a year.
For me it feels a bit soon for a failing battery. Normally in my experinence with Li-ion batteries, they work well for over 2 years.
Often I can relate the bad battery-life with extensive use (calling, internet), but sometimes it's almost empty overnight with 75% at the start of the night.
I suspect a non-linear decline of the presented battery-capacity is one of the causes: while decreasing it falls faster.
In my experience it stays quite a while above 80% and after the 20% warning I only have a few minutes calling-time left.

For the price, I'm taking the plunge. I ordered it yesterday. It should arrive sometime next week. Once I get it I'll let you guys know if it's good or not.

Ordered it on the day I saw the OP, got it delivered yesterday.
1. Yes, it fits in the stock I717 cover, without having to force anything. You can tell it's not a stock OEM battery, but it fits just fine.
2. Charged it to full capacity using a Samsung external charger (took an hour or so) and then started using it.
3. Off the bat, it appeared to keep a charge significantly better than my stock batteries, but I'm not sure how much of that was because it was just a newer battery vs the higher mAh.
4. Using the phone HEAVILY (flashed a ROM, a couple kernels, mods, etc, did a couple Nandroid backup/restores, ran the v6 SuperCharger script), I'd say I got about 20% better battery life. I'll have to go through a couple cycles on it and do some comparisons with Better Battery Stats, etc (under more "daily use" scenarios), in order to truly evaluate the difference.
My way-too-early conclusion:
A noticeable improvement in battery life, while not mind-blowing, was IMO absolutely worth the price (which isn't too bad)... especially since the boost in power doesn't come at the expense of a ridiculous extended back cover. I'd say don't claw over someone to get a hold of one, but if you were already thinking about adding a battery to the mix - I say go for it.
You need to be systematic with testing. It's not very useful to "use the phone like normal" when that varies a lot. For example, simply putting my phone on a different side of my desk will yield a different battery life because the cell signal changes by a bar or two.
To avoid this, I test by setting airplane mode, a specific brightness (usually brightest) and then playing a video on loop using the software decoder on the same version of video software. No standard sized battery will go past 4 hours in my experience.

But that 4 hours is for CONTINUOUS use. The "test" he did reflects more of real life use, although it is not scientific.

What you said doesn't actually say anything?
If the stock battery lasts 3.5 hours and the test battery lasts 4 hours under the same conditions then we know it's actually better. This will translate into real-life.
"Real Life Conditions" just means "didn't use it the same way" and cannot translate back into "worse case scenario". Placing my phone on the other side of my desk means I lose 15-20% more battery life over a workday.
You simply _must_ use the same conditions to actually be able to tell if it's better.

Getting 15-20% more life from a NEW li-ion battery vs a used li-ion is not exactly shocking. The fact is, thinking that any third parties are going to achieve a greater power to mass ratio than OEM is pretty naive. Any battery the sane size as the Sammy battery being 2.5Ah or less is highly probable unless there's a change in battery technology.

Just wanted to touch base again with an update...didn't mean to start a flame, just trying to report my results for anyone interested.
That said, my "continuous use" described above is (as much as I hate to admit) generally the norm, not the exception, with my usage habits. I used it just as I used the stock battery immediately prior, and I did notice the improvement. I didn't go to great lengths to make sure I eliminated every single variable for testing purposes, but it was one of those "I could just tell" type of things.
HOWEVER, at this point the new battery has been 4 or 5 cycles, and unfortunately is pretty much interchangeable with my other two stock batteries in terms of battery life. As I pondered in my first post, as well as being mentioned by someone above, it seems my improvement was probably just chalked up to the battery being significantly newer than the others. In fact, considering the older batteries have a good 8 months of age on this new battery, you could almost say that they're improving BETTER than the i9220 battery - considering the circumstances. Also I've noticed the battery can be prone to overheating at times of heavy use (more so than the stock battery). So take that FWIW I guess.
Hi, I have a problem with my Ace. When I only use 2G and use my phone for calls/sms, my battery lasts for like 3 days. But if i have 100% full battery and I use the internet with (or without 3G), my battery lasts for like half an hour, drains from full to 0 and then phone turns off. If i turn on my phone again, it shows like 30% or more battery left, but if data connection is still on, I lose 1 percent in like every second.
This is not only with data connections. I drained my battery from 100% to 0 in like 1,5 hours with just looking some pictures and using the calculator. I would like to think my battery is dead, but it lasts like 3 days when used for calls/sms only.
I have tried recalibrating my battery many times, used different ROMs (stock and custom), still same.
Is there anything else I could do to check my battery status??
Anyway, I am looking for a new battery but not the original one. Im looking from eBay. I contacted the sellers and asked for the weights. Original battery weighs like 30g. I got replied that these two (2050mAh High Capacity Replacement Battery for Samsung Galaxy S5830 and aoonen 2PK NEW Li-Ion Battery for Samsung S5830 Galaxy ACE 1800mAh fast shipping) batteries weigh 50g and 60g. This makes them less likely to be the fake gold ones, or what do u guys think? Has anyone bought one of those batteries? Or can anyone recommend a battery with more capacity than the original one (1350mah)

I'm 100% sure that something is wrong with your battery.
I've never heard about such long-life battery in Galaxy Ace.
3 days calls and texting ?
It's normal that battery drains faster when using mobile data, but not that fast.
If You can, ask a friend to borrow You battery from Galaxy Ace.
If everything will be okay then You'll know the naswer.
If other battery won"t last longer, then i suggest to check you phone for "short circuit".
Maybe something is wrong with your motherboard that is connected with 3G .. ?

I believe so, they both use the same sized battery (1350 mAH, Li-ion Batteries)
Though I may be wrong someone correct me if I am wrong.

I just bought two gold extended life (2450mAh) batteries for my Ace! I was meaning to test them against the stock one but hadn't got around to it yet. Didn't use the stock battery much as I think it's original to the phone which I recently bought 2nd hand.
If anyone wants me to do this test (properly) let me know.
Thinking about this; perhaps a few Ace owners could flash a common ROM and perform a standard discharge test. This would give us some baseline.

My batter is two years old and it works good.
I use CM7 and no super widgets. Maybe it saves energy.
Try another ROM, remove or switch off everything You don't need.
Maybe it will help You. If not, it's time to buy another battery.
Don't ask which browser is the best, because we don't know what You need.
I need my browser to browse websites. I don't use favourites on mobile phone, so everyone is the best.

There's an app called "Battery Drain". Try charging your phone to 100%, turn on Battery Drain and select everything except Vibrate, and let us know how long it takes to fully discharge.
I have a stock battery, and it lasted ~3 hours.

everything is inconclusive, except that there are advantages to using the stock
I have tried many ways to calibrate it and my conclusion was that this broken.

Wow, just too many variables! For instance.. Any idea how many mA the vibrator uses when typing with haptic feedback? What about the extra battery used by the radio when your in a poor reception area, does my micro-sd use more power than yours? Etc.
Battery life comparisons will only be meaningful in conditions where the battery is the only changed variable. So i would charge two or more batteries; discharge one, then another, measuring the times. Both batteries would need to be new unless you just want to compare something tired and worn with just out the factory.
Not 100% but I think it's relevant how many amps you take at a time, in relation to total capacity.. The chemical tech. may be difference, but lead-acid cells give differing amounts of charge dependent on temperature, and rate of discharge. In most applications capacity (C), is measured over 20 hours (C/20). C/100 will see many more amps capacity, and C/10, fewer! Also consider a used battery could last a considerable time, if only the high drain occasion is minimal. Something simple like the vibrator could send an old battery 'over the edge' if the drain is too high.
What does all this mean to me? Unless you wanna spend hours discharging your phone battery finding out (not really), get a fresh battery online; they still don't cost much and are easy to find. Gold batteries have been available for some time so go with your gut on that one! Perhaps, like me, you think it's worth the risk.
If you really love your phone and think you'll still be holding on to it in a couple of years time - you'll be thankfull you bought a spare battery or two while they were still cheap

Hello, problems of battery are the most important in the management of smartphones increasingly sophisticated. I know of no silver bullet, so it makes sense to always have an alternate (note that battery life depends on time, even without use)
I found a small application, very cool, which is PowerTutor, which gives us interesting information from the battery usage. However'm with JuiceDefender Ultimate (free version exists). The only application which effectively spare battery was Greenpower. [all in gplay]

This is usually the fix. It's amazing how fast some batteries start failing. Old batteries and cold temperatures are usually the top cause of poor battery life, especially in secondhand phones.

My battery is almost 2y old. I think it's just gone bad already after this time.
5 days ago i changed my rom to newest ReVolt rom and kernel to newest Dorimanx.
Just before that (so i think it's not a case) i noticed significant baterry drain on screen on and off. Its about 1% every 3 min on screen on and about 20% slepp thru 8h in airplane mode (when i sleep)
But can i somehow chceck is my battery charging to the full capacity as new battery ?
If i'm not clear pls ask.
Without getting another battery to do a comparison or without dedicated battery testing gear, unlikely. However, I'd be getting a new one if one managed to last me two years without crapping itself well before that.
Edit - Having said, that, you can be fairly certain a two year old battery would either not be able to hold a charge/discharge as efficiently as a new(er) battery given batteries lose the ability to do these things the more you use them/the more you charge & discharge them

Yep I hear you on the holding out for a new phone thing; I was going to wait until about then but my S2 started playing up hardware-wise & pretty much made the decision to go earlier for me.
From memory, a newish standard SGS2 battery holds around 4200mV full & about 3500mV close to empty (and I'm going way back in my memory here as I used a 2000mAh battery for all but the first two months), but that can be a little bit variable. I think given the age of the one you have, if it's significantly under that @ 100%, it's probably safe to say it's on its last legs (which is likely anyway purely because of how long you've had it).
This one is a weird one...
About a week ago, I needed GPS to navigate out of a town - I waited and waited and didn't get even any satellite reception... It turned out that I found the way by myself and just closed the navigation. A few days later, same situation, no visible satellites at all... Didn't have time to reboot the phone, so I just closed the navigation and went my way.
Now, something weird is going on with my phone... Usually I get about 2 days of battery life - but since last charging, it looks i will get about 4 days and I have been using quite a few apps, browsed the net, made SIP phone calls, made normal phone calls... (more than normal usage for me anyway).
Is it just me or are those two things connected in any way? Can it be that GPS has crashed somehow and in the result, lowered the power consumption of the phone? Is it possible to turn off the GPS 'on demand' to extend battery life?
All other stuff is working like a charm...
I am using stock ROM (4.1.2, radio: I9100BULS1, build: JZO54K.I9100XWLSD)

Well, a colleague of mine has the same phone and has experimented with various ROMs - none gave him so much more battery life. It is not the question of which ROM is better in terms of battery life, but whether some weird (non-functional) state of GPS (I have it normally disabled almost all the time via drop-down menu) can cause the extended battery life. And if this is possible, can this be done on purpose?
The ROM stock give many problems, you're not in fact the only that the strikes. I advise you to try some Sammy Rom! JellySNAP v6 and, for example, a great ROM based-stock Sammy

I am bumping this topic to continue the discussion...
I am aware of other ROMs and have experimented with a lot of them on another phone. Due to extensive set of installed applications, loads of data and relatively stable stock ROM, I haven't really taken the time to do the transition.
So, I am not really looking for a solution to fix GPS, but the opposite way. I want to know if I can break GPS on next boot in order to obtain such long battery life... How many days of inactivity do you get with non-stock ROMs? At the moment, I am getting 5 days of light use WITH stock ROM (WiFi, Bluetooth, data disabled, only connected to mobile network to accept and make calls). I was never been able to do more than 3-4 days and my battery is now over 2 years old....
So, please, don't try to persuade me to install other ROMs by stating that they are better and more stable - list your battery lifes in case of light use or inactivity.... Do you get 5 days on 2 year old battery?
If you think breaking GPS is somehow responsible for greater battery life, you're going to end up rather disappointed. That concept defies logic given GPS only uses battery when you're actually using it. How is it possible for battery life to somehow magically double as a result of GPS being 'broken' ?
Thus far you've not provided one duplicable 'test' that other people can try to see if they get similar results, and all you've done is blabbered nonsense in a couple of posts. I mean, do you honestly think people here are going to delete a bunch of GPS system files to see if they can get some magical extension in battery life ? I know I'm not, because trying to put that stuff back when your silly theory doesn't work is a pain in the arse.

Some facts:
- No system update was installed in the last month
- No application has been removed
- System hasn't been rebooted for a month or so
- Never got more than 2-3 days out of battery in idle
- Battery is 2 years old and is physically not damaged or swelled
- GPS isn't working (not even receiving or predicting a satellite on a clear day)
- System is rooted for a year or so
- Battery lasts 4 days now (instead of <2days a month ago)
- Connected to 3G network (no data connection)
I would try to reboot my phone, but I am afraid that it will all be over...
So, to stay with firm facts - how much battery life do you get with alternative ROMs in real life? Is 4 days (5-6 days with new battery) something usual?

Can you then explain me the difference between Cold and Warm GPS start? As far as I know, phone tries to keep as accurate GPS time as possible and a bunch of ephemerisis data in order to decode GPS data faster, next time you enable GPS. This defies logic that GPS is completely OFF when it is 'disabled' by GPS button in Android system.

In Lithium-powered batteries, I haven't come across the fact that battery capacity is increased with battery ageing and sweling up... On the contrary, internal resistance goes haywire and capacity drops, contributing to even more heat being spent internally by the battery and speeding up the process of degradation...
I may have not been cooking my own ROMs and writing drivers for phones, but I have quite extensive background in embedded systems and electronics. Battery life can not increase just by itself - there must be a reason... My lifestyle hasn't changed, my environment also didn't change, other phones at home didn't experience such battery life extensions... The only thing that I noticed is that the GPS is not working. I opened this topic in order to discuss whether that's the true cause or not.
So, based on '3 yrs worth of different people's experiences on here', what could be the cause for such prolonged battery life? How can I debug it by myself without rebooting the phone?
