Verify the accuracy of ROM files CM droidbasement - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Forgive me, but unfortunately my native language is not English ... So .. my research on this forum are very complicated.
After several attempts and with great difficulty I managed to download from droidbasemment "cm-10-20121030-EXPERIMENTAL-p4.zip."
At the same address I see that there is a file "cm-10-20121030-EXPERIMENTAL-p4.zip.md5sum" which I think is the MD5 of the ROM file of 152.52 MB.
If so, how can I verify the MD5 to make sure that the downloaded file is not corrupt?
Many thanks to those who want to answer. Hi

most recoveries will verify the file automatically if that md5sum file is in the same place as the ROM when you flash it. If you want to make sure now, just open the md5sum file in any text editor to see the correct md5 and then look at the properties of the ROM zip file and look at the calculated sum there and confirm they match.

kRel there is a app just for this, I have it on my pc, give me some time and I will post it for ya. dill

Thank you for your quick response ...
The problem is that ... if I open the zip file "cm-10-20121030-EXPERIMENTAL-p4.zip.md5sum", inside there is nothing!

Thank you ... this applet I also have in my computer. It integrates in "explorer" and is called "HashTab v3.0.0"
But the problem is that inside the file: cm-10-20121030-EXPERIMENTAL-p4.zip.md5sum nothing!

If you have the Wifi 7510 tab that is the wrong md5, you want the p4wifi md5

Do you have winzip or 7zip, you need a file extractor to open the md5 zip?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium

also...
search market for md5 and you'll find a ton of apps the will calc the md5 from a file you can compare that to the hash inside the md5 file posted by pershoot.

md5sum -c /path/to/file.md5
The *.md5 file and the file it corresponds to must be in the same directory together. This works from your device in a terminal as well.

I discovered the mystery ....
Opening the file from linux (ubuntu) shows a normal text file containing the MD5!
CWM is also able to read and verify the MD5. But I have not understand how to.
Maybe you need to copy the file to your tablet also MD5??

How do I calculate the md5 sum before I go flashing something so I can check
Sent from my tbolt running das bamf 3.0
It depends on how you want to check it.
The pinned root guide in the dev section includes instructions for using busybox to check md5s prior to flashing.
md5sum is included in most *nix platforms but most Win users use 3rd party apps.
md5summer, md5deep, etc
References:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5deep
http://sourceforge.net/projects/md5summer/
I always check them on the device through terminal. You need busybox to do it and know where it is. It's usually in /system/xbin/. That would make your command as follows:
/system/xbin/busybox md5sum /sdcard/pg05img.zip
That is assuming the sdcard is where your file is, and pg05img.zip is the file name to be checked.
Appreciate the help guys I have an application that I use on my PC but I'm on the road right now
Sent from my tbolt running das bamf 3.0
I just got an app from the market. Works fine.
What's that app called? I refuse to flash radios without verifying md5
Sent from my tbolt running das bamf 3.0
There's no need for an app to do it. Like loonatik and I said, the function is included in busybox.
Open terminal and type what loonatik said above:
"busybox md5sum /sdcard/PG05IMG.zip"
or "/system/xbin/busybox md5sum /sdcard/PG05IMG.zip" if for some reason the other has a problem.
But if you need an app there are a few such as https://market.android.com/details?id=burrows.apps.crypto or https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hobbyone.HashDroid&feature=related_apps
I use AFV (ANDROID FILE VERIFIER) from the market...and its free

Same here. You can even copy and paste the known md5 into the settings for automatic comparison of the next file calculated. Makes it super easy.

If you download the rom directly onto the device you can us a file manager like es file explorer to check the md5 with the one that is listed on the site you download it from.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I use MD5 Checker from the Play Store.
I copy and paste the MD5 from wherever I download it and then find browse to the file and select it. Then calculate to see whether or not it matches. If it matches, both MD5's turn green. If they don't match, they turn red.
Sent from my XT912 using xda app-developers app
MD5 verification is a guarantee that nothing happened from the moment you downloaded the file from a site to the point you saved it on your device or where it is need to start flashing/installation. It is a "legal protection" in case a corrupted file finds its way on installation and causes problems. It is a safety check.
I found all this out AFTER flashing without even checking MD5 on a Samsung S5.
Nothing happened as in most cases but if it did anyone would tell I had been warned.
Agree with @disconnecktie on the File Manager option for any medium users.

Did you download the entire package ? it may happen if the download got interrupted mid way ......... in that case you'd have a zip file of a lesser size which can't be opened ....... try extracting the zip if you get an error you've got to redownload the package....
also ensure that the package is not read only (just incase)

ok... package is not read-only... it's -rw... so it's good....
how do i check the md5 checksum in multiupload?
i m downloading the latest version now... hope it wont get disconnected...
Find an app like MD5Summer (Windoze) to check the MD5 sum once you've downloaded the package.
Also, you can use pretty much any archive program (7Zip, IZArc, WinRar) to test the archive once you've finished downloading it.
If it comes up with fail for *any* file, don't flash that package/download it again. You might have to try downloading it from a different PC/internet connection like I did a while back when I was having probs downloading roms from home without them being corrupt.

ok i will try to download using another pc..
You have to finish downloading the rom/package before you can check the MD5 sum as there's nothing to check if you haven't downloaded it (obviously)

yes i know... what i meant was,... is there like a website that tells me the md5 cs in multiupload, so i can compare to the one that i had just finished downloading...
anyway.... thanks to the above poster.. i deleted it from my phone and then transferred the file again... and now it works.... weird,... i transferred first to my microsd, then to phone... i guess that method doesnt work... better to transfer it directly to phone...
thanks y'all!!! been a great help... very nice community here
The MD5 checksum is usually listed next to the link where you download the archive wherever you're downloading it from. Honestly, it's not that important. The most important thing is you get the entire file. And if you "test" the archive in 7Zip/IZArc/WinRar & it comes up all files OK you should be fine.
I've never had a problem flashing a rom/kernel where the test in IZArc has indicated all files contained within are OK/the archive isn't corrupt.

ic.... oh well.. thanks anyway .... ohh 1 last question.. so if i want to revert to the stock rom, i just do the same thing but with the stock rom i can download from samfirmware?
Why not download the stock rom from here ? I wouldn't know about files from Samfirmware as I've never downloaded anything from there.
If you want to go back to stock, download the rom from Intratech's thread, flash it in Odin, done. Again, test the archive integrity in IZarc or similar to make sure it's OK (given you seemed to have had some problems downloading an archive that wasn't whole or corrupted).

[Q] how to unpack tar.md5 ?

Hi,
I downloaded a ROM from sammobile.com for my galaxy tab 10.1, and all I want is system.img which is located in a tar.md5 file .
if I extract is with 7zip I get a message "there is no correct record at the end of archive"
and dsixda kitchen don't seem to recognize it .
any ideas please .
thanks.
Well its simple just rename it to .tar and use winrar to extract it. the md5 extension makes odin calculate a hash to check if the firmware you're flashing is not corrupted.
hi,
I did that and I got a message "there is no correct record at the end of archive"
the files are extracted but I think it is corrupted because dsixda kitchen can't read it.
just extract it by 7-Zip and don't care about message
I have this problem too, my 7-zpi say that canĀ“t open file format unknowed or damage.
your download maybe interupted, try download it again and do md5 checksum

You have to download 2 files:

xxxx.tar.md5
the first one is the one you have to open.
the second one is the one that only have the MD5 result of the first.

Redownlaod and try to unzip again. Kitchen should open it, make sure u have kitchen scripts for your phone or edit from flashable zip. Afaik

dont use 7zip but use unoversal extractor. it will extract everything.
I have the same issue for 5301. I have to get either the recovery or system img for creating a custom rom. Usually samsung firmware files can be extracted using izarc, 7zip or universal extract tool. some can be opened with ultraISO or similar tool. I tried dsixdas kitchen as well. That does not even acknowledge this ROM. These firmwares come as a single tar file with md5 sum attached. There is something different about this ROM file that wont even let let the regular tools see what is inside the file. I tried to open it with a hex editor and it looks similar what a regular tar.md5 file would look. Looking at the log file from universal extractor:

99.3% (.TAR) TAR archive (149/5)
0.6% (.LZMA) LZMA compressed file (1/1)
7-Zip Tar archive extractions cannot be logged.
If Odin can flash these files using the same boot, recovery and system... images then there must be a way to extract these img files. wonder if odin extracts to a temp location?

Use odinatrix to extrat system.img n modem files..
Its the easiest tool do so...
U may also use splitfus2 bt its way trickier to use than odinatrix.

Your pc shud b superfast so that odintrix can work witout lag.
My HP G6 lapi took around 10 mins to extrqct the one .tar.md5 file..
The tool will automatically extract diffrnt .tar files such as modem_xxx.tar pda_xxx.tar n csc_xxx.tar
Now u can use these to flash through odin witout any prb.
U can use pda.tar in kitchen to get boot.img n system.img.
Kitchen will also help u extract sysmtem foldr from system.img.
U can also flash through odin the single .tar.md5....
Choose that in pda field...
Odin is smart enough to do rest of the part.

Appreciate the quick response. I guess my question was not clear enough. I extracted the recovery and created a clockwork recovery named recovery.img. Now I want to flash this recovery back on the device. I created the tar file using:
tar -H ustar -c recovery.img > CWMrecovery.tar
md5sum -t CWMrecovery.tar >> CWMrecovery.tar
mv CWMrecovery.tar CWMrecovery.tar.md5
When I flash this using odin3_v3.07 md5 is verified but he flash does not go through and stops at NAND write start. Is there a special way to create a odin flashable tar.md5 file foe these turbo firmwares?

[Q] To MD5sum or not to MD5sum?

Hi all..
I have been using the Zip files, via CWM to update my CM10 versions.. All is well..
But I see the md5sum files that one can flash with ODIN there as well..
So my Q is: Do I need to flash the MD5's as well? If so, for what point and purpose?
Regards
T
Md5 files are checksums for the file you are downloading. Its basically a way to verify you have downloaded the complete file and that its the file that it says it is.
