[Q] cannot mount or reformat internal sd card - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

hello everyone! first time posting on xda. i've researched everywhere, and yall are my last resort. here it goes........
sprint 4g lte, rooted, s-off, cm10.
somewhere in the processes of rooting and turning s-off, i lost my internal sdcard. can't mount it or reformat it.
my first indicatation something was messed up was when i tried to download a new rom, the phone gave me a message saying "cannot download without a valid sdcard." but i had a 32gb sdcard in it... also when the phone booted up it said something like "process.android.phone has failed." and when i tried to connect my phone as mass storage on my win7 32 bit pc, it wouldn't ever see the sdcard. not even the 32gb external.
i figured it was the jelly bean (or something like that) rom i tried first after rooting. maybe the zip was corrupted or something. i took out my 32gb sd, hooked it up to my computer, downloaded cm10 and gapps, then put it back into my phone, wiped everything and flashed.
that's when i discovered all the errors listed above.
so i figured i would try to do a factory reset. when i try to wipe data/factory rest through cwm recovery, this is what it says... E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
i've read about people getting twrp, booting into it, mouting the internal to the pc and reformatting that way. but how can i do that without the internal sd? the same way i got cm10 and gapps?
so all in all i'm pretty lost and pissed off. i'm somewhat droid savvy after having an evo 4g. but this a new beast..... please help!!!
let me know if yall need any more info. thanks in advance!
EDIT: FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was finally about to flash twrp recovery and dumlock through twrp. i then mounted my internal storage via "mount usb storage." my computer recognized the drive and formatted it! mounted and working great!!

I had this happen too when I was trying to go back to MeanROM from cm10. The problem is that I can't remember what I did to stop it. I was kinda panicking because I thought my phone was toast. I believe I just ran the zip for MeanROM in TWRP, and it came back after it updated to the new ROM.
Have you checked this out? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31091791
Sorry that I couldn't be more help.

i did run across that thread. the first description is a bit too confusing for me. i've tried getting twrp already through the market but it didn't work. usb mass storage won't work for me right now either.
the htc dumlock stuff it a bit over my head. i'm worried as hell right now!

Tried getting TWRP from the market?
You try to fastboot flash TWRP? I would suggest PG75IMG, but you say you don't have any storage. Try to fastboot flash TWRP, then see if you can format internal storage.

Emergency: Phone is beyond messed up

I rooted, unlocked, loaded a custom ROM. I ported over my #, and it went HAYWIRE. Now I cannot use my phone. I am able to get to the teamwin screen, but I have no roms or backups to load. What do I do?!
I do have a SD card.
When you're at teamwin you should be able to mount your internal sd card and then hook it up to your computer via usb and drop a rom on the internal card.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do.
Unfortunately I just realized I gave my dad my SD card. He will be back in an hour.
Anything I can do now? I see a "mount" option but it's asking me to "reformat"....
Internal sd should be your built in memory. I haven't installed a recovery on my LTE yet but I've never had this problem on other phones.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
So my dad rushed over and it's installing...I put over freEvo and it said failed, even after wiping cache/etc. Now what do I do....
Also while I'm here, does anyone know how to install things to SD card instead of internal memory?
When looking at the internal memory, the external sd is mapped to the 'ext-sd' folder.
My suggestion, read some more, then read again, then read instructions a third time until you fully understand what you're doing. Look at some youtube videos of the process too. If at any point along the way you're scratching your head, stop and rewind.
Assuming you actually transferred the rom to the sd (internal or ext), you're simply not pointing to it when flashing through the recovery.
Saying something failed isn't saying a whole lot. If you want useful help, you need to be much more detailed. What completed successfully, what exactly failed, when, what were the steps to duplicate, etc.
Put your phone into the boot loader.... Run the ruu and let it go back to stock... The root your phone again.

This.
Have you tried doing a factory reset yet? a lot of times that's all it needs if you're on a stockish rom

Mistakenly Formatted EmmC. ( f***) Can no longer mount to USB to reinstall.

Not sure what kind of disaster I got my self into, but I mistakenly formated the EmmC. (****...) There goes 900+ photos, all my music, and other downloads.
But I can't install a new ROM, because it will no longer mount USB storage. Did I fry something here?
The error
"E:Unable to open ums lunfile (No such fi..."
(It goes beyond my screen and doesn't wrap so I cannot read the rest.)
What? What gives? I need to get the new rom file on their so I can start over like I was originally trying to.
I'm sorry if this is some "super" simple error I am missing. I did google some, but people said just flash a new recovery. Well...I tried ODIN with a another kernel, the first one I ever used. To no avail. I know how to flash with adb on HTC phones, but I can't figure it out with the Galaxy.
[Update] I figure out I can use an external SD card to move a rom over...but the EmmC is still unreadable. Did I blow it up? :/
[Update 2] I was able to recover, MOST, of my photos. It seems my phone decided to just start storing them all on the external card. Woot.
[Bad Update]
Can no longer mount the external SD to attempt to try another rom/kernel. Dammit
[Good update]
Was able to get the emmc to mount again! Yay! I am worried though...is there any chance of damage?
Formatting your internal storage is fine it does nothing at all to the system. Unless you're wiping with stock ics kernel installed. Which everyone who reads and searches before they flash knows not to do. So you should be good to go.

[Q] Internal Storage won't mount (TWRP won't detect it)(

I'm the 4 genie and I'm extremely frustrated with my evo. While fixing separate issues, I tried flashing something and now it's got an error that E: sdcard (the evo's internal memory) won't mount. It's corrupted i think
It just sticks on the splash screen when I boot up, but the bootloader's and recovery are still here
So far, I've tried formatting it with several programs on both a mac and pc. I tried moving and copying files from the sd card to the internal "sdcards."
I am so sick of this phone, it's caused nothing but problems (first one i got had signal issues, this one ran slow and got even worse signals when i upgraded to JB).
I'm on TWRP 2.5.5. S-ON, HBoot 1.19
Please help me resolve this problem.
I am having the exact same problem. From what I've found on the rest of the internets it seems like we need to reformat (preferably with windows). But I only have a mac so I havent tried that yet.
You guys can try something like this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1917106
If you don't like the phone, then just trade it in or buy another. Coming on and saying how much you hate the phone isn't going to do anything.
That being g said, you probably had a bad flash and it corrupted the internal ( like you said). Most of us have done it at least once. Format the drive, and there you go. That's what fixed it for me, and usually what works. It won't fix your distaste for the phone, though, or your signal issues.
Sense ROMs tend to have better signal than others with my phone. The Sense 5 port is pretty nice, but there are plenty of others that work well. If you've tried the sense ROMs already, then go with AOSP. Some people have better luck with those.
If you still don't like it, then get a phone you do like... Hell, I'd be happy to send you $50 for the phone if you don't want it, I could use another to play with...

How do we format the drive if nothing can SEE the drive? The same thing happened to me. I can't get to the internal sd card.
Every time I had the memory corrupt it was from a viper dirty flash. All I ever did was wipe both caches a factory reset wipe security them mount internal to my PC and format. If this is still at no avail then I would wipe internal storage and let TWRP format the drive for me. I have never had both methods fail. The corruption of the internal storage is why every dev insists a full wipe and factory reset after flashing a new Rom

ugh, gotta get this working so i can get a trade in credit toward my iphone 5s
Interesting issue. I've fixed the issue on other EVO LTE's simply by mounting internal storage while connected to a PC, then formatting it. I can't think of a reason this wouldn't work for you:what:
ok, i've mounted it to the computer as mass storage several times on 4 different computers and formatted it, but to no avail
at the top, it will only mount the sd ext card..... maybe i've mounted it wrong? where do i mount it?
also, the micro sd card is the only thing it wants to read... is there a way to install the ruu (just a stock rom) and boot it from the sd card?
thanks again for the help!
Sorry for the necro, however I had this issue recently and finding very few fixes so thought I'd put something out there.
Now my fix was very simple, so I don't know if this will work for everyone. That being said, the ROM has been buggy now.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 - i9300 (international version)
ROM: Pac-Rom 4.3
Recovery: TWRP
Issue:
when starting phone, it is stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo screen.
Troubleshooting:
I was relieved to find that I could boot into recovery (TWRP).
From there my first instinct was to wipe my phone and re-flash the ROM... BUT when I tried wiping, I got an error. The log said something alogn the lines of "cannot mount internal storage" or "internal SD". I can't remember.
So I freaked out thinking my internal flash storage was fried, BUT why is TWRP working then?
I connected a USB cable to my computer to see what happens. Windows 8 picked up the external SD card, but not the internal phone storage.
Fix:
I would usually NEVER flash a ROM without wiping first, but thought I didn't have much else to lose. I tried flashing PAC-ROM 4.3 without the wipe and it said "successful". WTF? I didn't expect that.
I rebooted and everything worked fine. The ROM wasn't stock either, it had all my settings and icons on my home screen in tact.
Since then, the ROM has been buggy. Youtube app disappeared and wouldn't search properly in play store and the apps drawer had all these com. files f or the google apps (this was still there when I re-flashed GApps).
So I was able to save my phone, but had a bunch of issues. I have since flashed to PAC-ROM 4.4 (Kit Kat). I very much miss the PIE controls and Halo, but it is extremely stable.
Here's what I did when I had the same issue. Take out the ext SD card. Then, plug your phone into your PC. Format your phone with windows, it should appear as a flash drive or something like that. After that, I replaced the ext SD, mounted that with TWRP, and formatted that, too.

[Q] SD Card issue

I am having an issue creating backups. Last time I had issues with what seemed like the sd card, I bought a new 64 gig card and replaced my old one.
The old one still works fine with an adapter into my pc, but I wrote it off and sucked it up.
I just tried again making a backup in TWRP with an error, "unable to create backup folder". So, I switched over to CWM and tried the backup. Same issue.
I just checked with my phone plugged into my pc and the file system is defined as "Generic Hierarchal" which I've never seen before. I am almost positive I formatted it initially as either fat or ex fat. With the phone on, I have no issues with the card. I have music and other data on it and it reads just fine.
Other possibly relevant history:
previous rom was Beans 21 and was unable to update to 22 (do not remember the error)
wiped and loaded Alliance's latest V8 with no issues. Been running Alliance for a few weeks now with zero issues. (other than backup)
Do I need to wipe my card and format it in the phone? I think previously I formatted it in my win 7 pc with an adapter.
TIA for any info
Formatting the card with TWRP is probably better
I had this issue with an S3 and nothing would work. I tried mounting/remounting, formatting, and even a new SD card. It finally worked with a new SD, which is really weird because it was an old SD card compared to one of the newer ones.
Thanks for the response. I have 2 cards. Just cleaned off one and formatted in the phone. Still fails trying to do a backup. I hate the thought of buying a third 64 gig card.
I think I'll try going back to stock and see what happens. It'll be a while before I can. Sucks I can't backup first.
Thanks again for the response
interesting update, for anyone that might be watching this post: I d'loaded skips updated toolkit from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052788&page=10
and was able to make a backup.
just FYI
Bought a Sammy 64 and same issue. Unless anyone has any other suggestions, I'm going to Odin back to stock, I guess.

Not. Tried to load another rom and can't read from ad card. Damnit. Any help would be appreciated.
more drama...I re-loaded twrp, b/c I found an old post with roughly the same issue. It said to use cwm to fix permissions. Well, cwm doesn't offer that anymore, the comment is that it was placebo effect. twrp still does offer it. I ran it and then rebooted to android, then rebooted into twrp reco again and was able to load Alliance v8 again.
so, until 4.4 roms appear (which I will have to go back to cwm for, unless twrp gets updated) I guess I'm set.
I'd still LOVE to hear from someone who might know how this happened or what exactly happened, to know what to avoid.
Thanks again, to the one person that responded.
Back to square 1, cannot make nandroid backups.
In CWM v6.0.4.3 here's the errors:
trying to backup: Can't mount Backup Path
trying to mount external_sd: Error Mounting /external_sd
In TWRP v2.6.3.0 here's the errors:
trying to backup: backup folder: /external_sdcard/TWRP/Backups/
E:unable to create folder: /exterenal_sdcard/TWRP
E:Failed to make backup folder
Any thoughts? I know I've posted this multiple times, but not sure where to turn. I suspect if I go back to unrooted stock again and unlock / re-root, load twrp and fix permissions, it will work again for a while. But not permanently. I really want to fix this once and for all. But am not getting any clear direction to go. I have searched on and off XDA to no avail. hoping this time is the key. Thanks for reading and potentially helping.

[Q] Think I lost my paddle...

Ok, without getting into the cascading series of screwiness along the way, I think I've managed to effectively brick my phone. I'm posting in hopes that the part of my brain screaming "No, you're missing something" is right.
e970, already rooted, running CyanogenMod 10.1 and TWRP 2.6.3.0. In pursuit of a "clean slate" to deal with remnants of sloppy uninstallations, I thought I'd clear everything with TWRP and just put CM back. So, I pulled out my SD card with my saved data, and had TWRP wipe everything, including the CM zip on the root of the built-in storage. I copied the newer CM and GAPPS to a spare SD card, plugged it in...
and I found the external SD card wasn't recognized by TWRP. There's only 1 storage location listed, which is the built-in area I just wiped.
I can't get the phone to be recognized by a desktop running Windows 8.1. I have freshly installed the drivers, downloaded the SDK, rebooted, etc. from that side. The phone is never recognized by either Windows or ADB. So, I dug out the laptop I originally installed CM from some time back (last year?). Same story - no Windows or ADB recognition.
Ok, fine - maybe the USB port is dying on me. I'll try formatting the SD card and see if that's the issue. FAT32, copy the files back, still no luck. Great. Maybe it's the card, so I copy my data and put the zips on the original card I had in the phone. Still no dice.
So, here I am. No OS installed, no image on the internal drive to recover from, TWRP won't recognize my external card(s), and I can't get anything to acknowledge the phone via USB to do a sideload.
Am I missing something, or did I completely hose myself?
I forgot to mention: I did try different cables and ports on both computers before arriving at the idea the e970 USB port may have having issues.
Have you tried a different SD card?
SD card have a finite lifespan, and I've seen them fail n the middle of normal use. The first thing I'd try would be a different SD.
If that doesn't work, you may have to just LGPNST back to bone stock.
(You may want to play with the "Partition SD Card" option under "Advanced" in TWRP. It'll wipe any data on the card so back up to your computer first, but this may kick the SD card into being recognized by the phone [though I dont know how windows would react to it])

I did, in fact. I tried it on a spare first, so I didn't have to worry about erasing the data on the SD card I pulled out of the phone. When that failed, I tried copying the zips onto my original card, which was also not picked up. I've found other posts on here that suggest this particular version of TWRP had issues reading external cards, but I don't see any way to get a different one on the phone at this point.

I might be missing the mark here, but wouldn't this format the already-empty internal storage (since it's the one selected) rather than the external card?

If you can boot the phone into fastboot (should be VOL UP + Power), you should be able to flash the recover that way with:
fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img
You'll need to get the .img instead of a flashable zip obviously, but that can be done even by grabbing the "recovery.img" file from a flashable recovery zip.

I've honestly not messed with this option; I just know I've solved similar problems with flash drives in the past by formatting in different ways.

How is he going to do that? He can't get a PC to recognize the phone.
Maybe try a Linux box? You could make an Ubuntu live USB stick with some extra storage space on it, and try running adb from there.

There's a thought... I think I have a Knoppix disk around here that I could boot from. I don't have high hopes, since it's not being recognized by the laptop I did this on originally, but I'll give anything a shot at this point. I'll let you know how it goes.
No dice. ADB gives me the same response whether the phone is at the fastboot screen or the sideload inside TWRP.

Check ALL your cords
Another update. After presuming me e970 dead, going to Best Buy to shop for an AT&T Next upgrade, running the HTC One m8 for a couple days, I get a wild hair to try the HTC cord on the old phone. Oddly enough, it works and the phone was picked up immediately. I've already pushed CM over via adb, and and working on gapps now.
Apparently both of the cords I tried previously weren't up to spec for smartphone use. I'm going to have to come up with a labelling system on what's good for trickle charges and what's good for data.
I'm not sure what a return will do to my upgrade status, but I'd rather wait on a new phone. It even looks like I know what I'll get. Thanks for the ideas along the way.
Nice, glad you found a solution. Unless things have changed with the new plans, you should be OK to return the phone within 14 days and keep your upgrade.
