View flash counter without root? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to view the flash counter without root?
My usb slot is damaged so I used Mobile Odin to flash back to stock so I can send it for repair, but I stupidly forgot to reset the flash counter. I did reset it a while ago but can't remember if I flashed since then so I just need to check because I am unable to use triangle away because I can't root without usb working. Thanks

Boot to download mode, (Vol down, Home and Power) and it will tell you in the top left of the screen (if it all says official, it's fine, if it says you have a custom binary (count: x) x = how many times you flashed then it will need a reset.

I am in exactly the same situation - USB port not reliably keeping a connection, so I used Mobile ODIN to reflash a stock ROM, and I also forgot to reset flash counter. I have a custom binary count
What can I do?
EDIT:
Managed to get the USB to work long enough to use S3 Toolkit to root - phew!

I currently have this under download mode:
Product Name: GT-I9300
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsng Official
System Status: Custom
Does it means I am back to stock condition and if I were to bring to Samsung centre it is safe?

No, system status must bee Official too.

I am in a similar situation. My usb works, but I would like to find out how to reset the counter without a root. I tried using Triangle away but it requires root access. I rooted today to try to install (unsuccessfully) google wallet. The google wallet installer soft bricked my phone and I had to reset everything. My official software is back (unrooted now with official system status) and I iust wa t to make it like nothing ever happened.

you cannot reset it without root

root again, reset, flash stock ROM, the usual procedure, without root, otherwise no way to reset the counter as @Glebun said.

[Q] Chainfire's Triangle Away App

Hi all.
My SGS2 needs to be sent in for repairs in the imminent future, and in preparation I unrooted my phone and flashed a Stock ICS build (my carrier is Optus, Australia). Before this I was running a few different GB roms. When I boot my phone I do not get the yellow triangle (I assume this is because I am running official Samsung firmware), but if I put the phone into download mode, it still shows the 8 custom flashes I did earlier.
My real question is will Chainfire's Triangle Away app remove the binary count even if the triangle isn't there?
And a better question would be, would having official firmware be enough to still claim warranty, or would I need to have both official firmware and a "0" custom flash count?
Thanks for any help!
I believe Samsung may throw a stink about the counter, even if you are on stock/official firmware. This counter would imply that you have voided your warranty previous to the current state of the phone and it's OS
To be safe I would use the Triangle away app
EDIT: Yes, the app does reset the flash counter. See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en
Its always safe to clear the counter before returning it for service. yes the triangle away app will clear the counter with/without triangle.
download it for free from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Thanks guys!
I tried to run the app but it's telling me I need Superuser access...
Does this mean I need to root the phone, use the triangle away app, then UNroot the phone?
Sorry if this is obvious... Not overly confident of my ability to keep the phone unbricked haha.

You are correct. Root the phone first, use the app, then unroot.
Thanks!
So it will still think it's Samsung official after that process?
You'll need a rooted ICS firmware already on your phone.
Check the Triangle Away forum to ensure its working with your firmware version.
Flash Triangle Away, this will remove Yellow Triangle and reset Custom Counter to 0.
Flash official unrooted firmware using Odin, this wont increase your Custom Counter as its official. Use a firmware thats specific to your region.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Job done.
Also check my sigi for links
Thanks! This forum is full of amazing help.
So theoretically I could follow those steps then flash the stock ROM a thousand times and the flash counter would remain at 0?
If it makes you feel any better I went to Optus 3 weeks ago with a phone that wouldn't turn on with ICS for another region with root and they fixed it.
I think my USB jig cleared the counter to 0 though. I couldn't connect my phone to dl mode or anything
The app removes the triangle as well as the counter
Yeah I tried using the jig a while ago but I think I have the newer bootloader, so it didn't do anything, which was very disappointing.
I'd just hate to take it in then have them tell me to get bent because I rom'ed it.
Ok so let me know if theres a problem with my process.
I'm using ICS and the kernel is XWLP4.
There was no LP4 in Chainfires thread but I read that I could use the next closest one. So I should flash something like "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_O2U_LP3-v5.4-CWM5.zip" and then triangle away then use the Optus stock ICS?
UPDAT: I tried this method and it worked perfectly! Thanks so much to everyone who helped.
has worked like a charm for me everytime i put stock firmwares on my phone
Safest way is to flash a really old firmware and thus flashing the old bootloader. Now reset the counter with an usb jig. Done.

S3 stuck at boot logo

Suddendly, whitout me doing anything, I found my S3 stuck at the boot logo (the one that reads Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300). I thought it had crashed and was restarting (sometimes happens) but It is just stuck there. I have tried to turn it off by holding power button for 8 seconds and turning on again, removing the battery, wait a few minutes and inserting again, but it doesn't work.
Home+Volume up+Power for factory reset doesn't work neither. It just shows the boot logo.
Home+Volume down+Power enters download mode and when I select volume up, I get the message:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
5 months ago I rooted my phone to use Titanium Backup and since then, I haven't been able to update the official firmware OTA or using Kies because the phone says something is changed.
During those 5 months, the phone has worked without problem.
Just in case this helps, this is what I found in the folder of my computer where I downloaded Odin and the files needed for rooting the phone:
CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar
I9300XXELLA_I9300OXXELL1_LUX.zip
Odin3 v3.04.exe
Odin3.ini
recovery.tar.md5
root.zip
tmax.dll
zlib.dll
Also, soon after rooting the device I unrooted it for the Barclays Banking App to work. (I don't remember how I unrooted it, probably using an App). However, the official upgrading of the firmware was still not allowed.

I don't know and I can't check it anymore. I just rooted the phone, not changed the rom. It was the factory rom of the phone that was purchased mid-November, so probably ICS.
Looks like Sudden Death to me as there is no entry for PRODUCT NAME when in download mode...
Service Centre is your best bet...

As I said in the OP, I can enter download mode by using HOME+VOLUME DOWN+POWER
I'm not sure what is recovery mode, but if you mean the HOME+VOLUME UP+POWER combination, I can't. I just get the boot logo again.

as the rom was ICS, this might be SDS! though, as you can enter download mode, try flashing the latest 4.1.2 stock firmware. if this doesn't work, service center is your option.
definitely SDS, send it in for a motherboard replacement

My phone is official in every aspect and is still in warranty period. What worries me is that it was rooted and later unrooted but not put back to the factory settings (as I said, It doesn't allow me to officially upgrade the firmware). Will this void my warranty?
Can it be returned back to factory settings before sending to repair if it is in a SDS state? (I still can enter download mode)

No problem if its unrooted. If download mode says no custom binary and samsung official it should be ok. Keep in mind that sds might change status to custom even if you never rooted it.

s3 counter

Hi All,I'd be greatful if someone can advise me. My phones counter has changed to 1 annoyed because i wasn't on custom firmware or rooted at the time, i just reset my normal official firmware and the counter went up to 1. i need to change it back to 0 but it seems to be much harder than previous when ive done this.I rooted the s3 and have a custom firware on it just so i could install triangle away and reset the counter but the counter wont go below 1 anymore.i have tried to pull the battery just before the samsung logo s3 but its not working this time. I understand a stock recovery/bootloader would enable the counter to set to 0 without having to try and pull the battery. I am currently running team win recovery project 2.3.3.0.Anyone know where i get the stock from which I can run while rooted I assume or any other helpful tips?CheersFei

What state do you want the phone to be in? Do you want to continue running modified with counter of 0, or do you want to return to full stock with counter of 0?
There are several guides here on exactly how to do this, search and read for the full info.
To my knowledge you will have to downgrade your bootloader to the ICS version before factory reset, run triangle away then immediately flash stock recovery and ROM from Odin.
I've not done the above myself, so I'd recommend you read up first.

I want to return to stock because it needs to go to the shop. But the custom bootloader isnt letting the counter turn to 0 I read this is because its not stock. I tried pulling the battery before samsung logo after triangle reboots after resetting the counter but with this firmware its just not going back to zero. I understand I cant put stock firmware on until the counter is at zero because I won't be able to be rooted to use triangle.
Id just like to know what stock bootloader I should use to reset the counter. Then I can return to stock.
Thank you for replying

There are 2 methods.
1) Reset with triangle away and interupt reboot (pull battery immediately after Triangle away). This may take several attempts to get right. Then you boot into download mode. If binary counter is "0" (regardless of modified status = custom) then flash via odin
2) Flash an old bootloader (4.1.1) which you can get from any 4.1.1 official ROM on sammobile.com. There is a link to an ics bootloader in my SDS thread at the very bottom of the post too

Bootloaders since 4.1.2 and some 4.1.1 count the binary at every boot, which is why you must flash an ICS bootloader.
You also need to ensure you have stock kernel, stock recovery.
IMHO the best process would be:
Flash full stock with ODIN now.
Root with CF-AUTO root (must be AUTO) as this doesnt modify kernel or recovery
Then you should be able to triangle away and not go back to 1 on reboot.n ***If still not reset, flash ICS bootloader, then try triangle away again.
Flash stock again

Okay i re-installed the stock rom from the download mode i was already on then hard reset after from bootloader, the red exclamation mark has gone, the count says no still and the device status in settings is saying normal. so i assume this is fit to go back to the shop. I dont know why the count went up on its own in the first place, my phone just freaked out and started to reboot randomly and caused the count to go to 1 which is really annoying because i would have been blamed for something i didnt do.

Lost warranty

Hi
I gave my galaxy s3 for reparation because the vibration was not working. I came back to original ROM but i forgot to reset the binary counter so I lost my warranty. Did any body had situation like this before? Do you think its good idea to reset the binary counter to 0 and try again? Do you think it will work?

You cannot have a custom recovery or kernel, just flash CF-Auto root (to keep stock recovery) wipe data in recovery (note stock recovery will format your internal SD) then completely reflash a stock rom (no leaks or anything, just stock from Sammobile) using Odin, and it should show your status as stock and binary counter 0.

You say you tried flash > wipe > reset > flash. try wiping after you reset the counter, so after the restart boot straight to recovery, wipe data, then flash stock again (all without the rom booting) then it shouldn't be able to detect anything that would force the binary counter to change.
If that doensn't work you could return to reset 4.1, but your /efs will be incompatible with the modem, you won't get a signal, but once the counter is reset, however you will have an older bootloader (ensure the rom has sboot and tz in) so any changes they made to the binary counter to detect anything else will stop working, you can then flash 4.3 via Odin (which will not trip your binary counter and will make your modem and /efs compatible again.)
I haven't tried resetting my binary counter on 4.3 so I'm not sure if they changed anything (it could easily be set to detect the root binary on boot) but let me know how things go
You need to flash an older boot loader to get triangle away to work properly

I gave my galaxy s3 for reparation because the vibration was not working. I came back to original ROM but i forgot to reset the binary counter so I lost my warranty. Did any body had situation like this before? Do you think its good idea to reset the binary counter to 0 and try again? Do you think it will work?

Hi again
I just received my phone from reparation. The image i uploaded is the image i received in the reparation log. I assumed that my phone will loose the warranty since it took only 15 minutes and i got this photo. Even though the counter was not reset my phone is fixed and the guy who gave me the phone back said nothing about warranty
Thanks for all the replys

[Q] BINARY FLASH Reset problem

Does anybody have a solution to reseting the flash counter on the gs3 i9300 because I have tried EVERYTHING to reset this counter including using root triangle away and that doesn't work and I've tried just flashing the stock firmware back to the i9300 and that won't reset the counter and I even have a jig that's compatible with the s2, s3, s4 and that won't even reset the counter all the jig does is brings me into download mode but on my s2 it resets the counter and as of right now my counter is reading like 17 so could "somebody" Please tell me if there is some special way to reset this counter on the gs3 i9300, I'm even willing to give some money to who ever in this forum can tell me a way that this counter can be reset, and please no smart-a$$ Comments. But like I said anybody that gives me a working method to reset this binary flash counter I'll make it worth your time. Oh and like I said before, for some reason (root) triangle away does Not work on this phone so don't tell me to use that program.
Downgrade bootloader to BLFB, then use triangle away. Worked for me.

Disregard my last reply I've found the bootloader but I see this bootloader is for ICS and the current firmware on my i9300 is 4.3 jelly bean so how would I go about using this bootloader?

I believe that if I was to just flash this new bootloader to my gs3 with 4.3 on it I would hard brick the device because the blfb bootloader is for ics and I'm on jelly bean, so a Lil more help in how to go about doing this would be a big help.
Bootloader is irrelevant to firmware, I'm on 4.3 with BLFB bootloader, just don't use download mode afterward as it isn't SDS safe.

You could try XXELLA. Triangle Away seems to work fine with that bootloader, and it's SDS safe. I'm running it with no problems on my phone, and I have KitKat on my phone.
Hello, having the same problem with my I9300 , running MK7 booloader (4.3) and triangleaway isn't working . I found the XXELLA file to flash with odin, but is it really safe to downgrade from 4.3 Bootloader to a
4.1.2 one ?

I had the same problem a few days ago .... solve this ..
-wiped everything (settings, accounts, and cancel the backup, restore factory settings)
- Installed a stock room 4.3, using Odin-v3-09, again wiped all
-root with CF-Auto-Root-M0-m0xx-gti9300,
triangleaway installed this (https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbzgi7j1uor7e5k/triangleaway.apk)
- And it was ok
I hope it will work for you
OK , so i successfully downgraded to XXELLA , downloaded from here

TriangleAway worked perfect with this bootloader unlike the MK7 one that came with my 4.3 stock rom , after i saw it worked i flashed stock 4.3 again , and everything is perfect. needed to wipe data from the recovery but now device is like new . so thanks for everyone.

OK so I went with your instructions before I tried the others that were posted here because basically I already had the stuff you said I needed and I went through and did like you said and the first time it nothing happened so I went back into recovery and wiped everything again then went straight back to triangle away and tried it again and it worked and said 0 so as course now after putting in a new flash recovery it reads one now also I restored my backup I had from cwm and restored everything back to the way it was before I tried this and went back into download mode and it still reads 1 so I tried triangle away again after that restore and it wouldn't work so basically I guess the only way to get this to work is with it freshly reset with no info put into the device and then the flash counter will reset, so thank you for your help
Thank You for everybody's input, in the end I was able to reset the flash counter going by Razjaren's instructions then restoring back to my cwm backup, so thank you again everybody.
