Hello XDA, not much of a poster around here, though a very frequent lurker
After having HTC Desire for more than 2 years, I'm finally looking forward to buying myself a brand new HTC One X+, but something caught my eye recently on the internet as I oggled for any information regarding the device. It appears than the improved "+" version uses a slightly different panel, perhaps from another manufacturer?
So far, I've found two links describing this problem, but am unable to post them as of yet because of a 10 post requirement.
The first one is on a site tweakers .net, you should be able to find the page by searching for the HTC One X+ review - look for page 4/8 of the review. Beware though, the site is in Dutch language. The tests done there clearly show the differences in brightness, dark values and color temperatures.
The other one is a Youtube video, search for "HTC One X+ vs. HTC One X" video on Pocketnowvideo channel. The difference in brightness is pretty visible.
It would be much easier if someone could post direct links to those pages.
Another curious thing that may be linked to this issue: about a week ago I went to a store to once again check out the regular One X (having done that previously quite a few times during this year), and I couldn't shake the impression that the screen on that particular model was also darker than I could remember previously. I dug through the options to see if something was affecting the brightness - it was set at max, and no power saving mode was activated as far as could tell (though not sure if ICS version of SENSE even has that option). Strange, 'cause I was hugely impressed by the screen previously, and thought it was the best I've ever seen on a mobile device. Perhaps it was the model also using a panel from different manufacturer? Not sure.
I'd be very happy to hear thoughts and personal experiences regarding the screen from you guys! I won't be getting this device for at least another month, so I'm not in a huge hurry, though any info would be quite helpful. Also, any information on this thread may be of benefit to many potential buyers of this device.

About the Hue, some iPhone 4/4S screens look bluish, some look yellowish, although they have about the same max brightness. I have personally compared iPhone 4/4S screens a few times before. May be a supplier issue.

The screen indeed apears a bit dimmer, though it doesn't seem as a huge letdown, and it looks like it provides a slight better contrast ratio.
I thought I was the only one who has noticed this. The one x plus has a dimmer screen and the blacks are not as dark as the original one x. There is also that bluish tint. When viewed side by side the one x screen looks a lot better than the one x+. Question is why would HTC change something that's not broken. Why not just maintain the original one x screen ?
My logical guess is that HTC didn't change the display because they thought it was bad, but that it has more to do with their relationship with suppliers. Unlike Samsung and LG for instance, they do not possess productional capacity for making their own displays, instead they depend on making deals with other suppliers, and quite often those suppliers end up being their direct competitors in a smartphone market, which puts HTC at a disadvantage. Often, a supplier cannot meet productional demands for all regions, so they end up depending on a multitude of them to fill those gaps. The fact that the One X ended up with such a quality display at all was a major achievement on their part in my opinion, considering their position. Whatever happened with the original suppliers of One X display panels can be anyone's guess.
EDIT: one wild guess could be that maybe they opted for a dimmer display to conserve their not so great battery life, but I'd say it's a stretch.
Probably had deeper blacks, but in return the max white brightness isn't as good.
According to gsmarena, at 100%, whites are not as bright, but blacks are much darker too, resulting in higher contrast.
Thus, I assume display is better and eats less power... but that's only a guess, as I never owned the one x.

Has anyone directly compared in person? the screen is one of the highlights of the one x and it will be a shame if the brilliant screen was ruined. thanks
Reviewers are still lauding it's display as superb and one of the best. According to GSMArena, blacks appear a bit darker when at 100% brightness.
What remains to be seen is what users will have to say about it.

Hello, I just got a Thunderbolt through my work and I noticed the screen tends to wash out at angles. I had this same problem with my T-Mobile HTC Glacier or MT4G. It turned out to be 2 different vendors Sharp and Sony displays being used in this model. Once I got the good display it was a noticeable difference in the quality of the better display vs the bad one. Direct viewing from straight on is ok just as it was on the HTC Glacier. So I just wonder if anyone might have a good one and could post some pics to show.
Here is my original thread for the HTC Glacier with the Screen issues. There are some pictures and videos to compare the differences. I'm seeing some washing out at angles, especially around the clock digits where this problem is easily seen.

Here are some pictures of mine with the Sharp screen. The noticeable areas are the clock widget black areas where they flip.
I'd say it's possible. I'm sure they have more than one place that manufactures the devices. There's been some variability in the build quality of the devices, so it's not too far fetched.
I don't have a camera other than my phone to take pictures, though. It looks like a really good display to me and doesn't "wash out"
You're right there are two displays. I went to the store last week to compare my phone with the display. Because I used to have the mytouch 4g and it took three tries to get one with a nice display. So I was surprise, when I saw the display model and colors were not as vibrant as mine. Man did I get Lucky, first try and it's a winner.
This is interesting. I ran a "dmesg |grep panel" and it returned sharp. I wonder if anyone would get Sony.
Mine is noticeably worse than my MT4G that had the good screen.

If you ask me, there is no doubt that there are two panels for this device. My first TBolt (which had several problems) had a really bad screen and I complained about it in another thread like this one. I had it exchanged and the new one is VERY much better. The first one was not crisp, colors were bad, looked blown out next to my DInc OLED. The replacement is crisp and the colors are beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to compare side-by-side, but everyone who had seen my first one, even my wife who is pretty oblivious about these things, would say that the new one is dramatically better.

Thanks, could some of you with good screens do a dmesg in terminal and report if you have a sharp or Sony panel. Make sure you restart then immediately run the terminal and dmesg command. Mine is a sharp so I'm thinking it is the bad display. Also if you can post some pictures of the screen from the side at extreme angles.
I will try to take some pictures of mine and post them tomorrow.
Before some of you start stating your opinions about looking at the screen at angles, yes there are situations where you are viewing at angles. Also it has been proven at least in the MT4G with the bad sharp display that the colors are not as vivid as with the sony screen even when looking straight on.
Mine is made in Taiwan. If you have a good one post where it was made please.
Mine returned Sharp.. and the screen is much better than my OG droid and my wife's fasicnate. I can read this post at ~160ish degrees, sooo.. no idea

Reading this board may not be enough to tell. I will be interested to see if anyone has a Sony screen to compare.
The point is, everything I do on this phone can be done at that angle, in relation to using the screen. Colors do not change, only the brightness, as to be expected from a gloss screen (and gloss screen protector).
I personally think that shows a quality screen.
Definitely not something to worry about.
FYI : I have my dpi set to 200 if that matters

Here are some more pictures which stand out more with green colors. You can really tell the difference as you tilt to angles and the deep green contrast is lost and it is hard to define the icons. The middle picture is taken from straight on and you can see the difference. I think on the Good Sony displays there will be no difference when looking from angles. I really suspect that the same display problems are following from HTC and the MT4G.
Is there any way to tell my looking at the hardware number what screen we have?

No I doubt it, we could never tell with the MT4G. The only one thing that seemed to hold true in the beginning was the ones made in China had a higher percentage of the good screens and more of the ones made in Taiwan had the more of the bad ones.
i have a sharp panel as well. i'm no connoisseur apparently because i think my screen looks just as good as my old incredible.
I have one made in taiwan and it is essentially flawless, only thing wrong with it is 2 very tiny dots of light leak which can only be seen in pitch black

Odd, mine is made in Taiwan, are all bolts produced there now?
dmesg says sharp panel, but I have no complaints about viewing angle or contrast after quite a bit of fiddling with it and trying to find something to whine about.
I have a sharp panel and it's better than the display model at my local store. I used to own a mytouch 4g, it took three tries to get a good display. And the good display was made in china. My TB is made in Taiwan.
This would explain why some claim to have gorilla glass style display that can't be scratched and others are getting scratches from car keys.
My first phone the digitizer went out after a drop out of the car (no glass broken or cosmetic issues just said touch panel- fail) and the second phone has light leakage not just at the bottom but at the corners too. There is a gap at the right corner for whatever to get into my phone.
I want to know if there is a different 'nicer' panel. It seems quite a few people are popping up with broken digitizers...

How do I know? Because I busted mine open to try and fix my broken digitizer. You can see pics and read the story in my post "Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?"

Digitizer or LCD
I have not taken this phone apart. But I did replace the digitizer on the HTC INC. The Digitizer is separate from the LCD in that phone. Does anyone know if the Digitizer is separate in the Thunderbolt? If so, it does not matter who the manufacturer of the LCD is.
I to agree with this thread that the digitizer on the Thunderrbolt is very easily scratched especially compared to the HTC INC.
Because of all the mixed reviews regarding the Razr's screen quality, is it possible that there are two (or more) different screen manufacturers? This would explain why some reviewers have quoted poor screen quality while others have reported excellent.
Isn't Samsung (and affiliates) the only company that produces SAMOLED screens? I'm switching from the HTC Sensation and it has been proven that there are two different screens, each having its own advantages and disadvantages. One is a sharp, the other a sony.
Granted, I've never owned a Motorola Android device before so I'm not sure if they outsource different companies to make these screens.
If anybody is thinking about returning their device or comes in contact with another Razr, take a picture of the screen and compare/contrast. Any input is helpful!
I don't think they would have two different manufacturers for their screens. I really think it is just user to user preference, or some being more critical. I mean this phone and all of Moto's phones have been getting a lot of flak lately for the pentile matrix. I don't know it could be possible though, we'll just have to see.
This is not the case with Motorola. They don't put different screens in the same model. Some reviewers love to puke at motorola(wonder why) cause of pentile but they highly welcomed samsung galaxy s's pentile. I don't believe them but only my own eyes. Razr samoled can show whites as white and other colors are produced very naturally at high brightness. Just my 2 cents !

Thanks for clarifying. The last SAMOLED screen I had was a Galaxy S (1) phone and it looked beautiful. If the Razr is anywhere near that quality, then I'll be happier than a pig in ****.
I think some people (especially us phone nerds) do over-scrutinize our devices to the point of being ultra-anal (lol). Looking at the videos, it seems to me that it looks fantastic, and much better than the Bionic's LCD.

Its better than the Atrix 1 by a long shot.
I exchanged a razrtoday for a new unit. The old one had a very bad display. It looked great on high brightness but with the brightness all the way down, there was a very noticeable green tint to white and light colored screens. The new unit is way way better. My screen on the old unit looked like the pics from the screen review at the verge. The new unit looks amazing even with the brightness on minimum. I really think they might be using two different suppliers for the screen from the varied reviews and my experience. Many companies utilize several companies to supply the same components, so it is possible that motorola is for the samoled screen.

I honestly didn't even look at the first phones serial number but I hot the second unit at a completely different vzw, one that was over 60 miles from the store where I bought the first unit. This new unit is amazing and I'm very very happy with it. But its very concerning to me the wildly different reviews people have of their experience with the screen and the phone in general. Hopefully, it's just a problem with an early production run or I think Motorola will be getting a lot of returns/exchanges. The phone is amazing and the screen is beautiful though. I'm very happy with the new unit. So if you get one with a green tint on low brightness, return it or exchange it until you get one with a nice display. This display is comparable if not better than the one on my old nexus s which had a killer screen.

Thanks for the info again. I think I got the second batch from Amazon and it should be here monday or tuesday. Thank God they are really good with returns! I have my fingers crossed I get "one of the good ones".
The first razr I got had a defective screen. Blacks showed up as purple. It was terrible.

Yikes! That's terrible. Did you have any problems getting it swapped out? That's one thing I don't like about buying from online retailers -- but the price was too good to say no! Just hope I don't have to switch it out... at least it's Amazon

To those of you saying that Motorola doesn't use multiple screen manufacturers for the same model devices...I know for a fact they did with the Xoom...there was an entire thread dedicated to discussing it early after release and they were all the Verizon Xooms so again was the same model since only one model existed at that time.

Well, i still don't give a chance of different screen manufacturers. Maybe the samoled tech isn't as stable as lcd's. Some of displays just don't cook well at the factory ?

So I went to my local Best Buy to test RAZR's video and picture quality out. They had two demos on hand. One demo was on a booth with the security tag on it. The other one being held by a Bestbuy employee. First, I tested the RAZR at the booth. The video and picture quality were pretty bad. It wasn't as crisp or high quality as I was expecting in a high-end mobile device. It was a little foggy and very grainy. I thought that maybe the lens was dirty, so i cleaned it off. Second try and I got the same results... Bad.
To be 100% sure that this phones photo and video quality weren't garbage, I tried out the other demo phone that the BestBuy employee was holding. The results were much different. The image quality was more crisp and sharp. I didn't see any foggyness that I saw in the previous phone. It still wasn't on par with the iPhone 4s or some phones in the Samsung line, but i'm happy with its quality, especially with such a beautiful piece of hardware.
So, I'm wondering. With all the mixed reviews of this phones photo/video quality (some positive, some negative), do you think that Motorola shipped the RAZR out with a tonne of defective cameras? Were the cameras manufactured by more than one company? Did the demo and review units have slightly older hardware inside? Can some of these issues be fixed by software update?

my only fear - no amount of software updates turn a bad hardware into a good one. If your screen(the physical screen)is defective, Android update will do a whimper..

I was really nervous they would give me problems, but honestly I just walked in and didn't even say anything. Showed them my home screen and the guy saw it immediately. He said wow, that is all jacked up. Got a replacement, no problems.

So I got a replacement phone on the first. I complained about the replacement in a thread because it seemed to have a "warm" temperature display (I've always preferred the cool blue displays). Before I sent the old phone back which had the "cool" temp display I compared the two phones for about 4 days. The reason I'm posting this is because after comparing I actually prefer the "warm" color now.
I read some different posts about peoples preferences and a majority prefer the "cool". The ones who like the display "warm" colored described how the colors are more natural, especially in pictures and how the cool temp displays are more washed out but appear brighter at first glance.
Anyway, after comparing, I understand how and why a "warm" display seems like the better choice.
Hope this helps anyone who may be as picky as I am but can't decide.

After receiving my SGS3, I was extremely satisfied with the overall look and feel of the device. One of the main selling points (for me at least) was the deep-black color that a Super AMOLED screen had to offer. In the process of rooting the phone, I discovered several of the infamous black spots on my screen, against the dark black Downloader screen. I estimate I have about 10-15 of these, each of which are about 2x2 pixels in size, with the exception of one pattern that looks like this. ---> -__- (not kidding, lol) I've been on the fence about trying to get a replacement. So my question to you all is; How many black spots is too many? Or do they even bother you enough to do anything about them?

hi. i discovered something like 10 black spots on my s3 in total dark environment with dead pixel testing software while screen was total black. that's the only case you can see them. i checked my wife's s3 right after and had also black spots under same conditions.
the day after i checked my brother's s3 - same.
all of them have a few - i doubt if there is any display without. but why bother? do you ever have blank screen in black room? i found out with dead pixel testing, but i can’t trace them in any other case. Enjoy your phone and omit the insignificant - invincible - dots/patterns. i got over it after reading that is common and seeing the other two s3s. seeing your question i smiled understanding your worries of defective product it's common so omit it.
I don't like that my phone has but EVERY AMOLED screens have them. Trying to get it replaced won't do anything. My PSVita has them, my GS2, GS3 :/
It seems to be a fact of life with current amoled screens, and is really not noticeable unless you are looking for it. If you're really concerned you're probably better off with slcd like the one x or evo lte.

I would give returning it a shot if it annoys you, unfortunately the phone is in such high demand and short supply you may have to wait a little. I had the same issue with my Samsung laptop. I called customer service and they told me to return it to the store I bought it for an exchange. I did and they exchanged it for one that looks great.

What do I think? I think you've been trolling the G2 forums for a long time. Let people make their own decisions. I haven't met a high demand my screen doesn't comply with, so I think the title of this thread is ridiculous as well. If you don't like the phone, buy one you do like, and stop posting nonsense please. Its hard enough to sift through the good information on XDA, people shouldn't have to weed out bogus info.

I just came from a DNA that has one of the best screens ever made and this screen is is marvelous even in comparison from every angle even extreme ones.
I don't know how anyone can complain about the viewing angles on the G2. Coming from just about every major smartphone of 2012/2013 I can say I didn't notice it. Do people really use their phones at extreme angles?
On a TV or Monitor, I get it, you may have it up higher or lower or whatever, but it is a PHONE. You generally have it in front of you...
Just food for thought. Personally I am very happy with the display on the G2.
If you want great viewing angles go get something with a super amoled screen. No one is forcing you to keep your phone. Or maybe your phone is defective. I have 0 issues with my screen.

personally this is the best screen ive used. some people are just so nitpicky. they should work in Quality Control so we dont get dings scratches that ive seen on my new macbook airs, iphone 5's.

I'm thinking you must not have seen this display in person. First off, this display is by far the best I've ever seen on any phone. The S4's display didn't really look as brilliant to me as this one does despite the contrast ratio of AMOLED. I love this screen and it's disappointing for people to troll this forum posting bad things about the IPS+ display. It's absolutely beautiful. I, also, wonder why you need extreme viewing angles for a smartphone screen. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is not even close to the worst or cheapest glass anyone could find.

eh, this screen iis good, but it's not as good as the DNA. hands down, DNA is better. better viewing angles, and doesn't have that weird rainbowish effect when looking at grays and whatnot..apparently there's a layer in there that HTC bought the rights to that LG i guess didn't...the G2 screen reminds me of my Rezound, which had that same weird effect to it.
dna screen kills all, hands down.
IMHO the G2 has a fantastic display. The viewing angles are fine for what they would be used for... maybe looking at your phone on a table without picking it up. other than that, 99.9% of viewing on a smartphone is done straight on.
Yeah, the viewing angle thing I get, but in real world use it is a non-issue. I came from an S3 and that screen is cosmetically beautiful, but incredibly inaccurate and way too contrasty for my tastes. It's like putting a TV in "demo mode", but all the time. Not to rag on it, I really enjoyed the S3, but if you want the best, most accurate display around, I cannot imagine anybody besting the G2 for a while...
I am loving the screen. The preloaded videos really showcase it.

I have no rainbow our any other screen anomaly.
For full disclosure my DNA had a very light blue spot about 6mm.
The LG screen is "tricky". You don't appreciate it until you look at a high definition video. Even the ones recorded on the DNA look better.

Same here, came from the DNA, still have it so side by side is easy comparison, and while the DNA screen is beautiful by anyone's standards, the G2 has the most gorgeous screen of any phone I've ever seen.

Out of all the phones I've owned, this display is great. No issues here, unless of course, you're under direct sunlight.

As someone mentioned the 2 videos they include on the phone are really nice to watch and show what the phone can do in that respect. I also like the ringtones and notifications from the Vienna Boys Choir lol. Also I live in Florida and this is the first phone where I could see the screen all through the day no matter where I was in or outside in the sun, I do have to take off my polarized shades in direct sunlight or the screen is too dark but that was the only time I couldn't see lol. Some folks complain about using the volume key shortcuts for the camera and quick memo and I say to them you can open them 2 or 3 other ways too. I haven't touched the power button since I got this phone, I just knock it on and off.
Viewing angles?
I'm looking at my phone with the most absurd viewing angles and there is only little change to what I can see. The colours are the same even looking from 160 degrees... I don't get your point here. LG is one of the best display makers out there imo...
I didn't realize how "muddy" my S4 was until I put it down on the desk next to my G2 and the DNA I have here. Someone here mentioned to me that the S4 whites were dirty or grey and sure enough it is, I just didn't notice it until I laid them side by side at the same brightness. I keep my brightness down around 40 to 50% most of the day and the G2 looks better there than the S4 or DNA to me. If I crank the brightness all the way up the S4 looks a lot better but that's not where I keep it set so it doesn't matter. I'll have a Razr Maxx HD here later and I'll compare it too just for curiosities sake. I'm very happy with the G2 screen now especially since I used that tiny nav bar mod.
As for viewing angle, I don't view my phone at an angle and I really don't want people next to me always seeing what I'm typing anyway. I don't WANT a wide angle.
If there are complaints to be had about the G2, believe me, the display ain't one of em. She's drop dead gorgeous.
