[Q] Replacement shells on Lumia phones - Nokia Lumia 920

Does anybody have experience either buying a replacement shell for a Lumia series phone from ebay or alternately directly from Nokia?
If a 3rd party replacement how was the quality? Same finish and feel as the original?
Does Nokia even supply spare parts like this?
The reason I ask is pretty simple; I want a cyan Lumia 920 and i live in Australia. I'm not willing to compromise on this decision.
If I have to go so far as to buy an AT&T 920 + an international variant and swap the guts I will. Obviously reselling the AT&T one.
Taking it too far for a colour variant? Maybe. Do I care? No.
Any experience with 800/900 devices would be much appreciated.

I swapped the shells of my Lumia 800 quite a few times, from black to cyan to white. Here's a picture:
http://i.imgur.com/h3ezp.jpg
If Nokia has kept the basic design, then it's pretty damn easy, all you have to do is unscrew the two screws at the bottom, open the SIM tray, and press against the LCD panel from inside the SIM tray outwards (with a screwdriver) so it pops out. From there it's just taking out the rest of the components with screws.

Many thanks for the input Skydiver.
My concern is not so much with the dis-assembly procedure, Plenty of guides on youtube and I'm sure somebody will do a 920 teardown before Telstra releases the phone.
My question is where did you purchase these alternate shells from and what was the quality of said shells?
Thanks again.

Are there any news on where to get an original Nokia cyan Backcover and sim tray for the Lumia 920?

I wasn't aware that you could swap the 920s' cover yourself. Not sure if you will be able to source the cover for DIY.

It is a bit more involved than that, esp if the replacement shell doesn't have the antennas, although it certainly is doable. If the shell has all the needed parts in it, then it will be nearly as simple as ShotSkydiver described - drop out the sim tray, using a T5 remove the two base screws, flex the case to get it off, then disconnect the ribbon cable for the USB socket.
Here is a fantastic video that demonstrates the entire process with great detail.
http://youtu.be/cKd8tCAH-eY

This place has them for the 900 and such but not the 920 yet. I keep checking. I have also never purchased anything from them so I do not know how reliable they are but they do carry a lot of cool parts for many devices.

A small update for those interested in doing Lumia 920 frankenbuilds.
I've been contacting spare parts shops (and nokia) regarding OEM Lumia 920 polycarbonate shells; Nokia said no, Several UK online shops said 'maybe in the future' and finally just one appears to actually stock them.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400351666215
So far it only seems to be in the Grey colour (which is surprisingly attractive). I have contacted the seller asking if he will be stocking these in other colours, specifically cyan.
I also asked if the housing comes with the antennas/Wireless charging coil/NFC/Camera housing as the picture seems to imply this.
Update: Seller responded
We have all the colours on order from Nokia and they are due
in. The Wireless pad is not built in with the battery cover. You get
everything you see in the photo

Good news everybody. Seems like we won't have to fiddle about removing all those antennas.
I hope 'all the colours' actually means that and not 'all the EU colours'

Instead of buying the housing for it just buy a dummy phone from ebay or whatever and use that housing. Its much cheaper that way.

the panels dont have the necessary openings to house the components... there aren't even any holes for the screws... the only useble parts woulb be the front cover, and maybe the keypad...

you'll find the herald service manual along with many other htc phones on this site...but for all who don't care to search here ya go...just make sure you know what you're doing. It's cheaper to pay a technician to change housing or a part than to buy a new phone.
cheers
i too was searching for this as owning a supposed herald is great in my book over owning a common wing
none the less they are quite different, main peices are the buttons and the camera flash differ to the point where i dont think the housing will work
I see the housings avail..but no one has the Heralds buttons avail.
It may not work... one the hardware buttons are different, two the flashing leds on the speaker are a little more spread out (this may be able to be fixed depending on how the internals are set up). Other than that it may work if you can find the hardware buttons from a herald/p4350. Best of luck to you!
methinks the wing and the herald are technically two different models because of things like the leds.
Herald- HTC P4350
Atlas- T-Mobile Wing
t-wing/herald
I dissagre..Ive replaced my wing screen twice and it seems to me itll work fine. the key and kamera will fit ok, its just the lights you may or may not loose. it depens on the heralds top plate.
So let me get this straight... i r a little confused
The attached jpeg down there wouldn't work if I wanted to take that housing and use it on my wing?
So If I install a Tmowing mainboard on a Herald it will work??
they have the full housing on ebay including buttons.
I found different housings for my T-mobile Wing. The question is how I can take it apart? All of the sellers say it doesn't come with any instructions!
This is the black housing that I've found : T-mobile wing black housing
I also found P4350 housing but I'm not sure it fits on Wing or not. HTC P4350 Housing

Excellent 8125 Replacement Parts - Cheap

If you are looking to replace your 8125 case here's an excellent deal.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=360011196557&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=023
I've purchased one of these and it includes all the buttons. The antenna cover already had the antenna installed. It even included the black rubber gasket around the display. All I had to move was the ear piece and the vibrator.
I don't know if they are take offs but mine was in A+ shape. They don't include the back cover.
Awesome!
Beats paying $50+ for a new shell...
My only question is; can you move the MDA circuitry to the 8125 shell? Seems logical, seeing as both are the same hardware.
Great find... They also have the wiz200.

I bought one from them and sent a message to them that there was a chip in the corner of one of the pieces.
In the auction listing, it states that they may come damaged but should not affect working order.
So...be aware that there may be cosmetic damage.
They were kind enough to send a replacement, which I should be getting in a few days.
Hopefully, it will be a new piece.
Update:
These guys are great....well in my case anyways.
In the previous post I mentioned that a had a chipped corner on the housing and requested a new piece.
Well, those guys sent out a whole new setup..this one was in great shape....dont know if it was new, but looks practically brand new.
There was never any questions on their end...they just sent out another one.
I would recommend them highly. Great customer support.
O btw, I told them I would send the original one back...they said to keep it.
WOW...top notch guys.
I just ordered one of those cases i'll make sure to let you all know how it comes when i get it!
Very Nice... there were a few minor scratches on the corners and buttons but other than that the housing i bought for my wizard was in great shape! no battery door cover tho
can some post a pick of the how the device looks in this housing?
got mine. no back cover, no screws. so what, do i use the screws from my wizard shell to close the new 8125 shell?

Thanks
I got a Wizard 100 (Cingular Branded) shell. It looks brand new.......not one scratch on it. It didn't come with a battery cover though
Ordered it last night...Should be here middle of the week.I hope it's in good condition.
anyone knows where i can get some extra screws?
i was about to assemble the wizards guts in to the new shell, but the keypads dont line up, if i go along and assemble, i wont have use of the send call button and the end call button, and some other buttons as well
Good Deal
The one they sent me was in great shape!!!

[TMO TP2] best way to repair body damage, or replace it

I have been using my T-Mobile TP2 without protection on it for a while and have dropped it a few times. The screen is still perfect and the lower half (keyboard) has relatively no damage other than a few spots of chipped paint.
But the upper half, around the edges, has took quite a bit of damage. Mostly chipped pieces and dents, partially because of me dropping it and also because the bodyguard I was using previously damaged it! It was one of those crappy snap-on ones. Will never get one again, just bought ghost armor.
Anyway my question is what is the best way to repair the chipped pieces and dents or is that piece sold somewhere so I could replace it? I have no experience replacing things on the phone but I'm sure if there's a tutorial anywhere it wouldn't be too hard for me. Besides I"m not trying to disassemble the entire thing just the upper portion without the screen.
Any help appreciated.

Best option...Ebay>buy broken (software wise) TP2>use if for spare parts
hmmm the only cheap one I could find listed was also worn...
was hoping to profit because i will probably be selling my TP2 soon.
go to ebay and search touch pro 2 houseing case there about 80 bucks they come in balck and red and black and blue the are a little hard to swich over to but i did it and it worked out fine just takes about an hour tools and dremal if and only if ure useing the tp2 t7373
I am trying to locate a replacement front HW button (back key is either cracked or scratched and light shows through) - so, during the lcd repair process, is this button easily replaceable without getting too involved with any other components? Any suggestions or advice on what to do/where to locate this piece of plastic would be met with extreme gratitude!
Get a new housing from eBay.
Just be careful to get one that fits your version.
My phone was stolen at work on Friday, so I managed to scramble and find one at a good price on eBay and it arrived this morning.
While I did ask to see photos, and I expected some scuffs, the photos didn't do the device justice at all, as it's much worse than I expected. In all the time I've owned my devices, I've never dropped my phone once, not once! this thing's a disaster.
So I'll need to get a replacement housing. I've been looking at eBay but couldn't see anything except these ridiculous colored housings for teens and 20-somethings. Where do real adults get the housings from?
This is an excellent outer shell protector, gives better heft holding (IMHO), rubberized black, very lightweight. Just snaps on and off.
Auction ended, but locate seller store. My Tilt2 fit perfectly in the Touch Pro Verizon except camera button needed cutting shell (trivial task).

You could take it up with eBay for SNAD, probably get a refund depending on the exact wording of the add, but if it was really SNAD should do it.

I've been checking but I haven't found anything but these colored replicas and I don't want that. I'm willing to pay more for the original housing if I could find it.
As for the eBay complaint issue, I did think about it, but eBay is such a PITA about any disputes; they always act as though they don't want to get involved at all. In the end, I'll eat this one caveat emptor, at least this time.

eBay dispute process is tedious an long winded, but will lean towards the buyer in almost all cases. You just have to be patient.

Always pay with your credit card through PayPal. Ebay and PayPal suck at disputes; your credit card company is your fall-back and your best protection as well.
You can get OEM housings for $50-60:

Looks like it's kinda tricky to replace the housing (if you're going OEM)....

Great, thanks for the tip! I'll have to look into this closer, as I think if I go with the Touch Pro 2 OEM housing, there'll be a hole for the front-facing camera.
Maybe I'll just deal with it for now and keep my eyes open for an AT&T Tilt 2 housing somewhere. If it wasn't so beat up, I'd try a warranty exchange through AT&T; I was able to do it when I purchased a used BlackBerry Bold 9700 with no problem.

Hi there!
I've a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 that is quite beat up too & I want to replace the whole housing.
Problem is where I'm living right now, the T-Mobile housing costs double of the standard Touch Pro 2 housing.
Is it possible to fit the motherboard, flex cable & LCD panel of the T-Mobile onto a HTC Touch Pro 2 casing with the power button?
I would need the touch screen & call/navigation buttons as well.
Please advise me if you know anything about this.
Thanks!

I'm afraid I don't know myself, but if you keep searching, I'm sure there is someone who's done it and knows for sure.

[Q] Best housing?

I want to renew my HTC Dream, and thought about a bronze housing, as it is so rare. I am looking for a FULL replacement of the house (house, keyboard, trackball, buttons, screen glass), unbranded of course (so no T-Mobile logo, nor Rogers, just original HTC), and not for a thousand dollars of course (approx 30-40$ is the max).
Is there such thing around the interwebz? I looked around eBay a few days ago but couldn't find a decent one :S
ebay has a lot of housing options to choose from
Its not good trying to find/buying one that's not real (without a logo) cause you can run into probs...Non OEM parts may be poorly manufactured so they may have some defects without you knowing. I say just get OEM parts instead.

I am trying to, but I want to get a Dream housing (so the one without the separate brandings, like T-mobile, as Dream was only made by HTC and haven't been sold as a carrier phone like Rogers Dream or T-Mobile G1), and in brown color...
I saw some (from HK) on Ebay, a few weeks back - a great range of different colours (I really liked the banana yellow one!) Price was about £11 GBP, including delivery. But, the G-1 Dream is a complec piece if gear; I've rebuilt loads of phones over the years, and thus have some experience - and respect for the harder ones. I noted on TouTube a tutorial from a guy who repairs G-1s professionallym and emailed him to ask how much he would charge to swap-over casings if I provided both a working phone AND an "aftermarket" casing. His response? He turned down my money: didn't WANT the job. In a REAL HTC casing, the (several) screws involved locate into brass nuts that are embedded in the casing during manufacure. In cheapo copies... they don't bother with the brass nuts - the screws just locate in holes in the (polystyrene) plastic. You can get away with that if the casing's made from ABS... but NOT if it's much weaker polystyrene. The guy obviously knew what he was talking about... so I dropped the idea.

nice explanation. where can u find OEM Housing then 0.o
You still don't get me. HTC made a lot of types of the G1 - for Rogers, for T-Mobile, etc. But then they released an only-htc branded one, what was something like a combo of a Rogers faceplate (so only HTC logo, under the speaker and the left side's top) and a normal Google backplate.

Did it come together with the matching sim door?
As long as you get a fully assembled back cover, this is extremely easy to do. There are just two screws at the bottom, remove them and the phone pops right out.
It did not come with the sim tray, but I think thats ok, with the original black tray it still matches the two toned color scheme. Like the black and red for example.
And petard you are misleading others, it is easy to separate the phone yes, but you must be careful when removing the micro-USB ribbon and connector assembly and the wireless charging coil! Other than delicate patience with those parts though, it is pretty straight forward.

CYAN!
@IronMan1289: Thanks for your explanation!
I was not shure why some sparepart seller say it's difficult and the phone needs some kind of calibration after the cover swap.
Anyway. Did anybody see a cyan cover as a spare part?
I would definitly risk it to change the color.

No problem! But as for the cyan cover, sadly that is an At&t exclusive so for the moment it will be pretty tough for sellers to get their hands on it.

I have also done this. Swapped my Cyan for the all elusive grey. We probably bought the covers from the same seller as mine also came from the UK. I did manage to get my hands on the matching sim door as well. I also had to swap the headphone jack, USB ribbon, bottom antenna (the part where the USB ribbon is attached to), and the wireless charging coil like you mentioned from the old housing over to the new one. I also managed to solve the dust getting into the FFC problem with a few dabs of rubber cement where the dust initially enters in. Overall it was simple and looks OEM. Sorry about the bad pics. Used my old G2.

Great work bud! Does look OEM, but did you not like the Cyan? Or did you just want a color change because I have read a lot that many want at&t's exclusive color, and both times I went they were sold out!!! Lol
Anyway, I am definitely digging the red and may consider buying other colors just for a random change every now and again!!!

Thanks! Yours looks awesome too! The red definitely looks great. Reminds me of a Ferrari lol. Well I got rid of the cyan because I dropped it a few times and the left top corner got bruised up pretty good and it annoyed the crap out of me everytime I picked up my phone. I originally was gonna get the yellow housing but I saw the grey and liked it so much more. I also had that same idea, but I don't wanna keep moving the headphone jack, flex cable, and wireless charging coil everytime I switch housings. I suppose I could buy those parts and pre-install them in the other housing so all I'd have to do is plug in the flex cable and drop the phone in, but I looked it up and all those parts including the new housing came up $166. Just can't justify spending that lol. I actually heard that the cyan was available online only through At&t.

What did you search on Ebay? I'd like to swap mine for a black cover (going from white) but all I find on the bay is covers, not the original backs.

Looks like they removed them all. At least the ones that come with everything pre-installed already (antennas, camera plate, etc...)
Only one I could find is this one, but it requires a lot more work as you have to transfer everything over from the old housing.

Good luck if you decide to get it!

Not sure, but this might be the housing that contains all the components that Nissan350/IronMan1289 used. It costs around $113 (US) and is shipped from the UK...
You can also try this link. Quite a number of 920 parts available. Not all of them appear the be the best prices, but then again, there aren't many places selling them.

They are actually pretty good on the cost - £17 over all, including delivery. The problem - Delivery estimate is 10-25 days.
Still, gives me time to pull the thing apart and see how hard this will be
quick question

Did you happen to notice if the grey sim tray was a different size than the cyan tray? I swapped my Att black case for a Euro grey case, but my black sim tray will not fit flush in the grey cover.
