Lumia 920 buttons have a yellow tint - Nokia Lumia 920

I just bought my Lumia 920 yesterday morning and am liking it so far except for a few small annoyances. The main thing is the buttons on the bottom of the device have a yellow/green tint to them. Are they like this for anyone else or are they supposed to be bright white like on other phones? I have tried to get a good photo but can't and the AT&T salesperson said she can't see it. I was going to just exchange it for another one but they didn't have any more of the matte black ones in stock. I may check with a different store today to see if they have any in stock.

Same for me on my matte black - i think it's supposed to be like this (and i like it - I don't want to be blinded by too bright button lights when i look at the screen in the dark)

Thanks for the quick reply. I wonder if any of the other phones like the white or cyan have the same thing. For some reason the yellow is bugging me. I guess I am just used to the white lights since I just came from Android devices. I am way too picky LOL.

I have the white and mine is the same way.

My black one is the same. On Android phones the buttons are white whereas the 920 has a chrome overlay. I wonder if it's the chrome that causes the yellow color?

How is the yellow tint compared to the Lumia 800? Is it yellower?

I like it. It keeps the brightness down to a manageable level. I had the GSIII before this and the brightness of the keys was one reason I rooted and put AOKP on to turn those off permanently.

Same on my black 920. Looking at my wife's 820 hers are brighter when lit and are properly white when the phone is off. On the 920 they are silvered. This must be why they shine a bit yellow when lit.

Ditto. I just checked my wife's 820 and they're white as well.

100% normal
just like my NL900

In all honesty, white LEDs hurt my eyes at night because they're so bright. Even though white looks better, yellow is much more comfortable to look at.

Just a guess but it may have to do with the metallic nature of the screen over thr three buttons. The white led changes color shining through it. I'm slowly getting used to the off-white hue and not bothering me anymore.

I have a black matte colored version of the 920

and mine are tinted slightly yellow as well but there is no green hue to it. On my Samsung Focus S they are pure white though, almost blindingly so compared to the Lumia 920. Not sure which I like better but I am leaning towards blinding white since it looks more natural to me. The yellow will take some getting use to.
I'll get over it.

Hmmmm you were able to turn them off permanently on stock as well.

I think the reason why they have an Yellowish tint is due to the metallic / shiny mirror look they have when they are not lit up.
If you look at the 900, they don't have this finish, they are plain white.

My Cyan Lumia 920 has this as well. Good to know it was meant to be this way and it's one of the first things I noticed going from an HTC Arrive. The Arrive white LEDs never hurt my eyes and I like the white look better but oh well the Phone is Great so I'm not complaining to hard!!

My red 920 doesn't have the yellow hue, like my 900 did. It's a nice bright white, which I prefer.

Mine black 920 has white chome. No form of tint unless I have it angles to reflect light from my yellow lightbulb.

[Q] What color are your capacitive buttons?

Hi guys, I have a really general question. What color do your buttons light up? The ones on the bottom, the menu, home, back, search buttons. I just bought a refurbished I777 and they are this off white, kind of yellow color.
Every other version of the S2, the skyrocket, the Tmobile version, has this really nice white/blue color. Went to an AT&T store today but they said they have never had a display model of the S2 for me to compare.
I even got a replacement refurb today thinking mine was defective, but its the same color! This ugly yellow color can't be right...can it?
Yes they're an off white/yellowish color. I agree the white/ bluish color would be way nicer. I've compared mine, store display and friends. They're all he same color.

Now that is a weird color combination lol.
But that is sad to hear, I will be the first to admit that I am probably too picky and that to most people it will just appear as white, but it's a bit lame when comparing to every other GS2 model
I keep mine off. Once you learn where they are, no point in having them using battery.
I leave them on all the time, its still nice to see them in the dark, and they take very little battery. (Like emptying your glove box to save mileage in your car)
I would say mine are white. A "warm" white. Towards the yellow side, but I don't see yellow. I had a Thrill that were not only much brighter they were "cool" white, towards blue. I like the warm white better.
It doesn't surprise me to see a variation. My wife and I had captivates for a year, each got one replacement. All 4 were slightly different. It was the brightness more than the color on them. One of them you could not tell when they were on, unless it was dark. One of them was uneven, the menu was brightest, search less bright, it took me a few months to notice, but after that I always noticed.

Yep, the at&t SG2 has an off-white light illumination. Compared to the Sprint, T-Mobile version and Skyrocket, you can definitely tell a difference. In my opinion though, it's more subtle. The T-mobile, Sprint and Skyrocket versions are a bright white and I find it a bit distracting.
Agreed, I like the color. Its soft, and doesn't distract

It's an off white, "warm white" color. It's not obvious until you compare it side by side with the Infuse, which has more typical "cool white" LEDs. The "warm white" LEDs are more consistent with incandescent lamps in terms of color temperature.

When I ran MIUI they stayed on all the time automatically. I wouldn't have used miui for so long if they didn't. I don't remember there being a setting for it, and I can't imagine the setting carrying over from stock ROM that was installed before. I'm running ICScreweD now, so I can't verify in the settings. IIRC there was a few posts in the MIUI thread asking how to not have them on all the time, but no way to change that.

My new, new white Note

I just exchanged my old note for a new one (would randomly power off when the phone was in my pocket or being moved around).
When I exchanged, I grabbed a white model instead of the black, as I remember reading somewhere that the white models were benchmarking higher for some reason. In my case this was totally true. The old phone benchmarked at 2650, the new one is now at 3200 on unrooted stock ROM (with the same config - apps, widgets, etc.).
Another random observation: the white s-pen is significantly lighter than the black one. I preferred the weight of the black pen. It's a minor issue, just strange that they would be so different.
I went through 2 black and end up with the white one at the end because of the back pixeled on the first one and the second had a pixel stay lid when the phone in sleep

Wow, I feel lucky too. First Note, really fast, no issues except some black crushing here and there.
I thought about exchanging my carbon blue for a white, just for aesthetics (the white one really is dead sexy). but going to the store and playing with one, i didn't like the light bleed and brightness of the buttons. also, i like the grippy back on the carbon blue one. plus i think it will show less wear and dirt over time.
but mostly after reading all these exchange posts, if i have a good one, i don't want to exchange for a bummer that i would have to take up on a warranty exchange. i only have one day left in my 30 day window!

I got the white one to replace my original black - I too think the white one is dead sexy. The back is definitely a better texture on the black one, but since those are all interchangeable parts, no big deal.
That said, given that some phones are working better than others, I agree - if you're happy with the performance of your current phone, you may not want to take a gamble on returning it for another.
I really thought it was an iffy choice when I bought the white one with a white flip cover, as I thought I might not like the white face of the device, seeing as I loved how the screen blends into the black face of my Infuse and Captivate. Two weeks later, I'm really impressed and I have adjusted to the white. The capacitive buttons were bugging me with how they bleed into the face of the phone, but I never liked them lit up anyways, so I just have them always off...I know where all four buttons are, so why do I need them lit up? Haha. I have gotten so many comments on how nice this phone looks it's getting annoying almost. I love promoting the Note, but let me use it in peace! Haha.

The white looks awesome with the brown flip cover. I've got that and a frosted black Boxwave. I want an aluminum blue bumper w/ back shield now. I think that looks sweet with the white.

Blue or Purple?? Anyone have one in hand?

Anyone actually HAVE the SSG3 in Blue in their hands?? Some photos make it look blue, while many other photos look more of a Purple. I'm curious for a better description of the actual color. Please and thanks.
After handling one of each today at work (a white one and a blue one), I'd probably say that the blue one looks... charcoal than anything else. Really dark grey with a tinge of blue. It DOES look nice though. Nice enough for me to wait for it over getting instant tech gratification from a white one!

It surprised me a bit too, I was expecting a definite blue hue! The "pebble look" is really quite nice though. I'm glad I took the time at lunch time to go and have a look in person when the Samsung reps turned up. It made me realise that I would be more than happy waiting for that one over the white one. I'm certainly not bashing the white one though. Its nowhere near as cheap looking as I'd thought it would be. I just prefer black (or charcoaly blue-grey!).

I would LOVE for Nokia to release the Lumia 920 in Cyan, like it keeps teasing. If so, I'll get that one. If not, I'd get black as my first choice (and thus, my vote), or gray as my second (though I'd have to see it).

I don't think the 920 can run on VZW network? Correct me if I am wrong
I want the cyan one the most but who knows if that will ever come and I don't wanna wait for it either. From the colors available the grey one with matt finish and the yellow look most appealing to me. But grey seems to be mia at the moment and germany is officially only getting black, white, red and yellow.
Really having a tough time deciding which one to pick. Yellow looks great but it's a bit too flashy like red. Black and white are just too boring since everyone is running around with those colors these days.
black since it is an elegance color and shows the cell phone
The yellow one looks amazing.

White...no question...as long as Verizon gets it (yes, there is a strong rumor of a roadmap realeased and the 920 was on it)

I traded my Cyan 900 for a white and happy. Will go with white for my 920 also. Put invisible shield on the back and it gives it a matte look. Although I like glossy. Just did it to protect the metal around camera

The big difference lies in the finishing as well... The bright coloured are nice indeed, but not that fun to hold with wet hands. The shiny finishing really is a fingerprint magnet as well. They should have made alle the colours with the matte finishing, like the black and gray versions.
Just my five cents,

[Q] Does your backlit buttons have yellow/green tint?

Hello all,
opened my white 920 today and I fiddled around with it for abit. I just noticed however that the backlit buttons have a very obvious yellow/green tint to it. When I compare it with full brightness white on the screen (as the buttons arent affected by it), it is very obvious.
Do you guys have something similar issue, or does your backlit buttons appear as crispy white as when you have full brightness on your screen?
yeah, i have the grey 920. the buttons are really yellow... im trying to ignore it, but if other people have pure white backlit keys, i will send it back i guess.

The only "positive" I can see about this is if you're watching the phone with tired eyes (when waking up in the morning in the dark or something) and you have low brightness but the 3 buttons are shining with the full crispy white and might hurt/annoy your eyes (unless the light can be completely turned off somehow). Yellow tint is after all more "calm" to the eyes. But other than that I guess it should be considered a defective unit.
Read though from a different user that his keys starting becoming more white after his 3 days of ownership. How long have you had the phone?
Compared full brightness to my old Desire HD, and the DHD white appears way more crisp and whiter. DHD uses super LCD. I thought this was supposed to be a top device, dafuq is this????
My black 920 does not have tinted buttons, my yellow one does. Might be an idea to add the color you are seeing this on to your posts, I am assuming the non-black versions have this ?
this'll be my second week with it. i played with a black one in store at JB, the buttons seemed pretty white. havent seen a grey one like mine in store though, so nothing to compare it to. might send an email off to nokia about it actually.

I have a White model. I compared full brightness with my old Desire HD. The white colors on DHD is much, much more white (white as snow) when put next to the Lumia 920 that has a slight - yet obvious - tint to it. The buttons are even more tinted.

Changing brightness for screen does not change brightness on buttons. I could live with tinted buttons for when using phone in the dark since you cant turn buttons off or lower them. But as soon as I saw the whites (on screen) on my Desire HD were far superior, I called for a replacement.
I dont know if simply the DHD has a better display, but I dont wanna roll the risk when im gonna be having this phone for the next 2 years. DHD uses Super LCD while Lumia 920 uses IPS TFT, and as far as I know IPS is supposed to be better. Either way, im hoping the replacement will be different. If the screen (not buttons) is gonna be the same on replacement, im simply gonna assume its how its supposed to be. Just kinda sad though how my 2 year old DHD is showing better, more crisp colors than the brand new Lumia 920.
I have taken three pictures with a bad digital camera that might help people tell the difference.
(sry for blurry pic 2 and 3)
Picture 1 (lumia down most)
Picture 2 (lumia on right)
Picture 3 (lumia down most)
Try look at one screen, then quickly the other, then back to the first one... Keep jumping between the two screens quickly with your eyes and you will notice the very different kind of whites the displays are showing, you can tell the Lumia is not showing as "snow white" as DHD. Might not seem like a big deal on pictures, but it is very noticeable in person and a shame for such a high end device.
Nope.. My friend has it.. and they are completely white..
Waiting for replacement. Will receive either tomorrow or monday. I will then compare the current device with the new (since I have to use the same packaging im getting with the new, to ship in the other). Will update here when I did it all.

I think it is. The 920 has the same chrome/silver over the soft keys as the Nokia and att labels. It's a common belief that the chrome alters the color of the white leds.

Since so many wrote that they have pure white backlit keys on their devices (including white devices) I simply didnt wanna deal with it.
Should get replacement tomorrow and I will report back.
Replacement update:
After receiving my replacement I can confirm that if you have a phone with yellow tinted buttons, your device's screen will most likely also be affected. I currently have the faulty and new device at hand, and from putting the devices side by side with full brightness while viewing a blank white page, I can easily tell the new device has a much brighter screen, the white is... way more white, while the faulty device has what seems to be a blue tint over it, and a lower brightness overall. Because of this, all colors are affected. Not only do they not stand out as much, but some brighter colors (such as yellow), will with the blue tint appear darker.
Note though, this is all with two devices side by side. Even if you have none to compare with, I can tell you the difference is very noticeable. I will recommend anyone who believe they have yellow tinted buttons, are therefore might be affected on the screen aswell, to get a replacement!
To make yellow tinted buttons most obvious, put your device on full brightness and go to a white blank page! Now look at your buttons and compare its "whiteness" to whats on the screen!
Note: The buttons will never be as bright and white as the screen. A non-faulty device will have a dark-layered-white (or they would sting your eyes when you used low brightness), while a faulty will have a most obvious yellow tint to it!
If anyone has any questions or something they want comparing from the two devices I have (up to 4 more days), please let me know.
3 Buttons - 3 colors ...

I received my 920 last Saturday. My 920 looks fine. Right now i notice the color stuff - or the "maybe" color stuff ...
The arrow on the left looks nearly white.
The windows symbol in the middle looks white (a touch of light green/yellow?).
The magnifier on the right looks nearly white.
Any idea?
Thx, SP

What do you mean "nearly white"? A non-faulty device's buttons will be a darker tint of white (never as white and bright as on the screen). Do you know how cars sometimes has tinted windows you cant see through? Imagine the glass layer below over the buttons is tinted as such, making sure the light does not come through as strong, but remain white.
In regard to telling if it is faulty, all I can recommend is to turn brightness to full, make the theme white and then compare. Just keep looking back and forth on the screen and the buttons, you will indeed notice if they have a yellow tint to them, but im not sure with "nearly white".
Can you maybe go to a store and compare with a display model?
In the end its up to you if you wanna go for a replacement. If they're offering a free replacement you can take use of it, and if its the same, you can always ship the new device back (unless you're keen on the new one incase your current has scratches or whatever)
White seems not to be white...

Thanks for your reply! I compared with a display model and your right! White seems not to be white on my 920. My Lumia looks like there is dust in the display... It is pin sharp - but black is a bit grey - white is not full white. All the colors seems to be a bit "overlain by" a blue film...
I did not recognized it before - cos i did not compare the display with a different model...
... Thx, SP

Good to know you could compare and identify the issue. I hope you will get a replacement. Know though that I recieved 2 phones with this issue. Im not sure if Nokia shipped out a batch of faulty devices, or if they're using different suppliers for their screens. Either way, you shouldnt ship your first phone back until you get the second, so that you can compare them and make sure the new isnt faulty/"from-a-bad-batch".
Well for me the white on the screen is totally white, no worries there but on the touch keys I can see a shade of yellowish tint on them
I put the display on full brightness and checked this...I have white lumia 920 model RM-821
The screen brightness and white levels are unrelated to the yellow tint on the buttons. I have a flawless phone and yellow buttons.
All new batches are having tinted buttons ( yellowish~green ). It was done on purpose to avoid disturbance at night because they do not dim when the screen adjusts itself to a lower level of brightness and that could potentially annoy you when the screen is set to low brightness at night.
It's how the phone is supposed to work. Now please don't go exchange your device if you have the so called " perfectly white buttons " for a tinted one. There are other things to worry about in a phone.

If I only look at a faulty device, the white also appears... white. First when you have them side-by-side do you realize it. You would need to compare in a store like someone else did in this thread I believe, and he got a confirm on a faulty device.

No, I wont exchange. Like I mentioned I do not mind the yellow tinted buttons. I would prefer the white ones, but I cant go on exchanging every second/third day.
Thanks for the info though.
