Custom SMS Tone on WP8? - Nokia Lumia 920

WP8 gives you the option to change SMS, email, etc tone, but I want to use my own sound. Anyone know if this is possible on WP8?

would like to know as well. Thanks!

Unfortunately no. You can only use custom ringtones. Txt, voicemail and Email have to use one of the canned tones. That and the ability to not have unread text or voicemail repeat notifications. My phone is also my pager and when on call, I need this to go off mored than once to wake me up most times. I'm hoping to find an app to address this but for now, these are about the only things I really find annoying about the phone.

Returning for Android
Well after searching for an app to allow custom tones for messages, etc to no avail, I've decided to return the phone and go back to Android. Not only are the options there but there are also better apps such as SMS Popup which I can't live without when my on-call rotation comes around again.

Never really understood the need for this, as long as it makes a sound I am good But I guess thats a personal choice to make. Good luck with Android

Simple, my phone is also my pager and when I am on-call for ~ 2,000 Windows servers, if something goes wrong, I need those pages to wake me up. Something the stock one-time-only tones won't do. I know I'll do well with Android, used it for a few years but had hopes for WP8. Perhaps future uprades will provide basic functions/features Andoird and to some extent Apple offers in their products.

Still nothing on this? What the F#$k is wrong with MS? Since MS can't or wont' can we get Nokia to do this, I mean they are doin all the work from MS anyway.

But how is it different?
Here's the idea. Add your Google Voice number to your Friend/Family list. Then use the Google Voice callback app (or use the Google Voice mobile website to set up a call). This will create a phone call that will start with your phone ringing. When you answer the phone, it will then begin ringing your other party. The genius here is that the incoming number on the caller ID is your Google Voice number. No minutes used.
Another bonus is that if you change phone companies, you don't have to change your Google Voice number. Assuming that is the number you are handing out to people, you'll always get calls. Add on to the list superior voicemail, and much better texting and it starts to really shine.
If I am diligent, I can go an entire month using minimal minutes. Since I am sharing minutes, this makes the other users on our plan very happy. =)

It is also helpful for people who would like to split their work life from their non-work life. You can specify conditions to connect a call to a work phone or home phone between specific hours, or you can use one phone with multiple voicemail greetings for different groups of people (family, friends, work, etc.). It lets you screen/block calls from specific or unknown people and send them directly to voicemail. You just have a lot more control over things.
Good point! I had forgotten about those customizations! It is especially amusing to set up a custom voicemail greeting for one specific person. When John calls and it says, "Hey John, leave a message old man!"

[Q] Android Notifications sent to Touchpad?

Not sure if this has been asked yet, searching didn't give me any results anyway - but apologies if its been asked.
HP Touchpad + HP Pre3 connect and the tablet can be used to read text messages etc along with a few other features
So, I was wondering if anyone has fiddled with trying to get Android to connect to WebOS for SMS/Missed call alerts?
closest thing I can think of right now would be using Phone Portal to connect your Motorola device. It uses WiFi and the browser.
Wish there was a way to do that.
Have you tried DeskSMS? It sends your SMS's to your Gmail.
Might be any good?

Nice one! I think that could be a viable option until someone figures out how to either make an app for android/webos to do it, or something more advanced.
I was just about to post this, theoretically it shouldn't be impossible to achieve although I'm far from an expert in the area (read: not an expert at all). I'd happily donate to any developers which could create a patch for it, as I'm sure would many other touchpad owners.

Yep, I'm expecting a bluetooth app for it.
Must admit i'm annoyed with how restricted the feature is - i mean the car, tv, and pc can all get text alerts from the phone. (Actually that's a lie, the car stopped getting text messages when i went to android)
So i'm sure its doable, its just a matter of getting a dev interested in doing it - unfortunately I wouldn't know where to start.

[Q] Song from CD (Music) how to set as Ringtone?

Hello,
I have a New AT&T SGS-2. I am trying to set a Song or track from a CD that I have on my SD Card. I migrated from a Atrix and on the Atrix it allowed you to Touch Hold the Track or Song and then asked if you wanted to set it as a default ring tone. Obviouslly it wont allow you to do that. I spent some time on Chat with Samsung and didnt get anywhere-
It works great with individual Contacts, it allows you to go straight to "MyFiles" and pick the song without a Problem. But its a pain with Ringtones.
Also How do you add Notification Sounds as well, for instance, I have several Sounds from Jeff Dunham's Achmed, Or some "Gong Sounds" sounds from Blackberry, which I like using for Email or SMS- Can you add additional sounds to Notifications?
Would really appreciate some help. The Display is Drop Dead Gorgeous, Just suffering from Atrix Toxicity at this point.
Thank you in advance
The simple answer, without going into too much technical detail is as follows:
* rip the desired track from the CD to an MP3 file
* [optional] edit the MP3 so that you have the bit you want as a ringtone
* place the [edited] MP3 on your device under /sdcard/ringtones
* select the ringtone from the regular Settings interface
Thank you for the reply.... I want to play the Whole track, not "Just" make it into a ringtone. I got a tweet from a friend out west. He has the International Version and has no problem doing so. He said AT&T blocked it, thats why I cant do it. With the International one you touch hold the music track, it asks if you want to assign it as a default ring tone and Voila. AT&T's Days are numbered with me. I am really PO'd but good because of all the issues they have caused me.
I hope someone with the AT&T version will figure this out and let me know how to do it.
Thank you1
Unfortunately it seems a bit hopeless for setting music as ringtone. Att strikes again. I would suggest getting astro file browser and copying your music file to the folder specified above. Unless a Dev somehow releases a patch for the stock Tom our best bet is to wait for a custom rom. There was an app called ringdroid. Ill post back with my results

Would you try something for me, I just got off the phone with Samsung, Main screen go to Apps, My Files, create a folder called Ringtone Downloads.... Go to your Music CD pick a track, Copy it and move it into the My Files Folder you created.
You should be able to touch hold or select it as a ringtone. Let me know if it works!
What a pisser, it works perfect on the Sprint Version as well, (the way it should) Touch and Hold!
Ringdroid works great, I've maid some long ringtones with ringdroid 1+ minute long, not quite whole song, but I think you can, it would be worth tyring.

@ItsaRaid,
I tried your suggestion and still nothing. I would use ringdroid. It takes the music you have in your phone and lets you pick any song. I just tried it and its a much more elegant(only) solution. You mentioned you want the whole song as a ringtone. I don't understand why since your phone will only ring for about 6 times. But I just tried it with a 2:00 minute song and just selected all and hit save.. then it asked me if i wanted to save it as a ringtone, alarm or notification. i hit ringtone and it added it to the list of default system ringtones. Hope this helps and while yes I agree its a load of crock what att did, ringdroid appeases my anger. cheers!

Eddies92,
Im so pissed off at AT&T right now. Guess what? (A) Its not a problem on the International or Sprint Version of the SGS2. (B) Contacts... It allowed me access to the music on my SD card, and it even allowed me to pick the track, but there is a "Cap" on the size...300kb only, that is such a load of manure, its absolutely unreal.
On Email, your screwed as well, and you cant add notification sounds.
Why would Samsung allow AT&T to do that to their Premium Flagship Android Device? The Samsung Galaxy AT&T Ladies in the Night S-2
The Suggestion was from Tier 2 technical at Samsung "Raoul". He needs to learn how to make Hummus, maybe then he will be better helping with Smartphones!

So now the question becomes.....Will Samsung release ICS for the AT&T SGS2? and if so, Will ICS alleviate the problem. I just got off a 2 hour phone call with a Level 3 Senior Manager at Samsung, He was shocked as well. The International, Sprint and T-Mobile SGS2's all are "Unrestricted" Only the AT&T version has this problem. They all play Music Tracks from The SD Card that has been assigned Default Ring tone, with No restrictions added, and as well Contacts, there is no 300kb Limit assigned, Only AT&T has restrictions,of this nature, No one else.
I hope one of the developers reads this, and can give me a glimpse of Sunshine.
By The Way, if the Phone was Rooted, would that eliminate my problem?
On the spec sheet, AT&T should have added a notice that they have restricted Playback of Music Materials used as ringtones, sounds or speciific Ringtones used for individual contacts. And, that you are not permitted to add Notification sounds at all.
[QUOTEBy The Way, if the Phone was Rooted, would that eliminate my problem?[/QUOTE]
No it will not.. my phone is rooted. Being rooted doesnt not add any functionality outside of having "administrator privileges"
I spoke with a Senior Samsung Engineer today out of Richardson Texas.... "AT&T Pays for the phone, therefore we have to do what they want, regardless" They were shocked, at the find, the initial comment they made was is,
" All Samsung Phones can do that, you should have no problem using a music track on the SGS-2 for a ringtone sound." Unless of course it is the AT&T Version.
There is a 300kb Cap on the size of the file as well. For Both Music Tracks and Contact Ringtone Assignment for Contacts.
There are some other things as well. Anyone try email maintenance on the phone.? What a nightmare, and it also doesnt work correctly, No "Select All" ect, ect ect. I tried empty the Trash, what a joke. Only on the "Rethink Possible" What a bunch of Scoundrels AT&T is, they ruined a gorgeous phone.
Only on the "Rethink Possible" Maybe they should Re-Think Possible Mr. De La Vega as President of AT&T Mobility and let him Clean toilets instead, along with the people responsible for doing this to the SGS-2.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but as far as email management, both gmail an the "email" app have always pretty much been the way they are. Its really not a big deal. Not trying to be disrespectful but if you keep knitpicking at every phone you have then you will never be happy. Ive never had an iphone but you may be happier with that. I just flashed cyanogen mod and youll be pleased to know that in cm 7 the set as ringtone option is back. CM7 is very stock (google) experience. I think CM7 is great but so far I havent really seen much improvement over the stock UI but like I said it is my preference and mod props to CM7 makers its legit. =)
Eddies 92,
First thank you for your help, I appreciate ALL your comments and guidance. Have you had the Atrix? I have for the past 7 months. Email is awesome, delete a email, theres a undo button, go to empty the trash, its as easy as pie and simple and quick. The SGS-2, I went to dump trash, I had to individually "X" each box and then try to delete them. I accidentally wound up in the in box, and dumped some email, I moved them back to the In Box, and they dissapeared. Im NOT Knitpicking. Email Maintenance was a piece of cake on the Atrix, on the GSG2 it seems "Old Style", and prehistoric in comparison.
What would it take to make me happy? Fix the Music Track Issues, Ringtones and Notifications and make the Email work more like how it does on Atrix... I would be TICKELED PINK! " I-Phone? YUck, how about Nexus Prime LTE
Now, lets get down to Business....
"I just flashed cyanogen mod and youll be pleased to know that in cm 7 the set as ringtone option is back" I have no experience with this, Im not sure what it is, and I wish you lived in Columbus Ohio, cause I would be knocking on your door asking you to help me do it. Can you explaain a little better also the Set Ringtone is back?
never used the atrix. Honestly the email doesnt bug me because i check them as soon as I get them but then again I dont have a ton of emails coming in at once. just 4 or 5 a day. To put it more simply. Android is composed of two things.. the kernel and the rom. the kernel is the operating system. the guts of it all. The rom is what makes it easy to use.. the icons and what not. Cyanogen Mod has been the gold standard in roms for a number of phones.. Understand that the "nexus" series are loved because they provide a pure google experience with no carrier or manufacturer modifications. Cyanogenmod (CM) brings gingerbread v 2.3.7 which is the latest android version shy of Ice cream sandwhich. Normally CM makes phones run like a dream because the stock rom was poorly built. I have not found this to be the case with the galaxy s II. I have not noticed any increase in speed and as far as battery life goes I cant comment because I just flashed it this evening. The stock rom is very good in my opinion. I may stay with cyanogenmod simply because I love the openness and speedy updates and its my way of sticking it to the man, I have absolutely no AT&T restrictions or additions with cyanogenmod. hope this clears things up and if youre intersted there are tutorials in the dev section of the GSII. I found that the tutorial on the CM wiki is much more easy to understand for a first time flasher like your self.
No AT&T restrictions, that means I can play Music Tracks like Ringtones or I can assign Tracks to play with specific Contacts?
The Email on the Atrix was awesome, easy to use, if you accidentally dumped a email, there was the "Undo" button in the Lower Right.
Anyone Near me in Columbus Ohio that could help me do the CM7? Again thanks for the guidance.
By the way, before I typed this I went to my email, settings and notifications ringtones, it let me go into the external SD Card, and The CD Music Tracks were there, I clicked the right hand Dot on one tracked and it lit up green.! Can that be possible? I got chicken, so I returned the email to the ring tone that was previouslly set. Ha, Youve taught me alot already, but you know what, I dont quit so easy, Im a Believer, Fighter and Survivor.
Thank you for the new friendship
-Larry
green dot? sounds like a way to select things on the atrix. never seen an android phone like that. dont chicken out whats the worst that can happen? and to your questions yes you can go to your music player, bring up the options and set as ringtone. Honestly, as great as cyanogen mod is, I'm going back to the stock rom or maybe try another. I was just not wowed by it. you may like it though. its just preference. It needs a tiny bit of work and I am not faulting the devs for this as it was just released.
Glad to be of assistance. i am not new to android and understand things fairly well but I am not a dev by any stretch of the imagination. Had androidsince v 1.5. I am new to the forum and really like the community and am here to stay so see you around larry. cheers
Ha,
your really cool! Let me clarify, I went to the settings in my email... it allowed me to navigate to My files, actually gave me 3 choices, I went to my files, and ext SD Card, and then to one of the CD's I have on the SD Card. I went to the same track I have been trying to get to work. To the right there is a Dot with a empty taget insidet, I clicked on it and it turned green.. Chicken Licken said the sky is falling....
I closed out of everything, put the phone in its Desktop Cradel, on my desk and fired a test email from my PC. It Worked.! I am very confused from this all, why would it work for email (RoadRunner) not elsewhere?
Let me also clarify the email complaint. The User Interface (software?) on the Atrix was wonderful, if you made a mistake to the right lower, there is a tab, undo. Deleting was marvelous, up to date very upbeat everything. The SGS2 however is almost all Manual, its almost Prehistoric. Deletes are manually done, eack email has a box, you have to select the one by one, there is no Select All, and its not easy to delete or clean out trash. The UI on gmail, is much nicer, same for Yahoo. Dont understand why there was such a big difference. on Roadrunner Email between the Atrix and SGS2.
Last Comment. My email Notifications are hit and Miss, they always dont work correctly, or I dont understand how its supposed to work... Ill get email, sometimes the Sound will go off, sometimes the number will show on the email icon... "Sometimes" is a good way to state that. any ideas? Or sometimes I will open the SGS2 and there is a notification after I slide the Bar down, but nothing showing on the Email Icon and no sound warning.
Cheers! God save the Queen

All i can say is im sorry you dont like the S II as much as far as the email,, it was skinned by motorola. S II is closer to stock. Motorola skins the hell out of everything. Im a bit confused, you have an atrix an SGS SII? ive had nothing but good luck with this phone. It could be your kernel is messed up somehow. Ive seen reports of this happening to people but its kinda rare. I would go to settings>privacy> factory reset and delete "usb storage" make sure you have all your important stuff backed up. Hope that will solve your problem. I would highly suggest you look into modding as i think you will be happier with cyanogenmod. Email is its own program. the ringtone limitation was placed from app to app. the email just happened to have ringtone options. most apps are made with the idea that they will use the global (systemwide)notification ringtone. The music app is not stock so it was modded at atts request im guessing. Theres other music apps in the market that probably restore the option youre looking for. I heard doubletwist lets you set as ringtone. sorry i cannot offer anymore insight.
Eddies92,
You got me thinking, I called up Toni Soprano, I told him my trouble, (He took over for the Godfather). I had to Kissa his Big Ring. Gave him a peck on both cheeks as well.
Toni Soprano says like this. We gonna put De la Vega back in Morroco, teach him how to make Hummus..
In the Meantime, I thank you for making me think. You have to Try Mixzing Media Player from the Market. It is absolutely a Italian Stallion. I can now assign any Music Track I want as a RingTone, better yet, Jeff DunHamm and Achmed the Terrorist, "Silence I Kill you"!!! It is abosolutely Awesome. I got so excited Im still jumping up and down, teested it my self. Guess what else, its got a full fledge Audio Mixer 10 Channel, and the Music sounds so much better off it, including the Ringtones.
So..... Take your Music Player AT&T and shove it up your rear end!
PS. The Mail app. I got the skinny on it. The Atrix app, is a Motorola Mail Client proprietary App, It was gleaned and streamlined by Motorola. I posted in the Forum and one of the Developers aswered me. They dont know if the Atrix2 has the same thing, but he recommended K-9 Woof Woof.!
Im almost home, now all I have to do is get my notifications to show up properly, its NOT counting email, and the sound always doesnt go off properly.
Your right, the SGS2 is a gorgeous phone. Scrolling, Flicking, Web, Internet all very fast, for the most part no lag. I hear there is a Update out already, 3rd Party, and the real thing is pending De La Vega to get off the can.
Yeah. I agree with not faulting the phone. Samsung has made a great product and the ones crippling it (in a sense) are AT&T the former does not bug me in the slightest. If you're not happy with their practices, I suggest you jump ship to perhaps sprint or t mobile. I had sprint and loved it for the first year I had it. Their data speeds (3g) have gone down the shi***r. Ive read that on the east coast they're pretty good which is what their known for. I lived in California and recently moved to New Mexico. Coverage for them was horrible. I wouldnt get service in half of my town, literally. it would jump from no service to 1 bar. Second my data speeds were non existent. I swear to you on my grave that I was getting 50kbps on a good day. Average 35kbps. This was ridiculous. Tmobile doesn't have 3g in my town and ive heard horror stories about them. Verizon reigns in my region but they were about 15% more expensive than my current plan at ATT and have a much better value. Supposedly verizon is going to roll out their lte service where I live which intrigued me a bit but I thought to myself.. why do i need all that speed? With att i get 1.5mbps which is more than enough for anyone. People forget, its a phone not a laptop. at 1.5mbps I am more than capable of downloading everything and anything I want. so I must say im a happy camper getting 1.5mbps(3g) speeds coming from 35 mpbs at supposed (3g) on sprint. ps on att, where my parents live in a "4g" area I clock at 3.5mbps =D good enough for me. besides true lte 4g likes to drain batteries quicker.
Im glad you found a music player to your liking. I personally love the stock music player because of the controls on the lock screen and notification bar and if you look youll find the stock player also has a customizable equalizer.

Send text without sending text?

I know the title sounds a tad confusing, but that's because what I want to do is kind of confusing.
I want to send a text to a phone number, but have my phone not actually send the text at all, meaning that there would be no chance they would ever receive it, but it would make it look as if I texted them (I know I could edit my text logs with an app or some sort of SMS restore app, but I want to see if there is any way to do this).
All help is much appreciated

hmmm... i see what you mean.... you need a messaging app that has the capability of allowing you to send "duds." ive noticed that if you have multiple messaging apps, sending one with one app shows in the others, so i assume they all use the same database for storing your sent/received messages. so actually, what you need is one that toggles a block for the messages, telling your phone you successfully sent the message while keeping it from leaving the phone. the best way for it to be integrated would be a setup where you hold the search button to toggle the block. this would let you send a message in front of someone, have it injected into your logs, and it not really be sent at all. i dont know of any app like this, but if you are a developer yourself (im not. im on this site because its helpful and i like it.) or if you know one who can do it, it seems like it wouldnt be difficult to make, although root would be a likely necessity.

i think i found one. if youre willing to shell out the 100 pennies for it, maybe this is what youre looking for.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rayy.android.fake&hl=en
try it within the first 15 mins of getting it, and if youre displeased, go back to the market page and hit refund.

Exactly what I am looking for, is a way to send "dud" messages. Anything or any way to do so would be absolutely beautiful (I only wish I was still a developer. I got to C# and stopped years ago, then never recovered back to my potential).
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you sir

[Q] Want "ping" instead of "plop" when dialling

Now while I like the "nature" theme of the SIII as much as the next guy, I've got one problem with it.
Like the title says, I really dislike the "plop" sound that you get when dialling, and would much prefer to have a proper (?) dialling tone, e.g. where each key has a different note.
Try as I might, I can't find any easy way to switch to dial tones like I had on my old SE X10, so unless someone out there's got a solution, I can see I'm going to end up switching off dial noises altogether.
+1
Why hasn't anyone answered this question? It's important to have these tones when calling an automated system.

It does actually send the correct tone down the line, you just hear a different one locally. It's hard to say if there is an easy fix, because there should be a sound assignment to each key in the Phone apk or related, and if Sammy has replaced them all with a single one, it might not be so easily modified to point each button at a seperate sound.
All I can suggest is to get an alternative dialer, perhaps the AOSP one?
When I called my bank, it didn't work. I switched from short tones to long ones and it still didn't work.
If I can find a different dialer I guess I'll try it.

That's very strange because it's practically a critical feature that the phone dialer can send DTMF tones. I use it regularly myself so I can promise you that it does work for some of us, it could very well be a problem with your bank. Try rip the phone apk out of a Cyanogen build or similar if there are no dependencies, or if you get a dialer from the play Store pay careful attention to how reliable it is and its permissions, just in case.
I asked this question weeks ago and no one has come up with any 'fix' for it...
The tones you hear when pressing a key have nothing to do with the tones the phone sends as described.
Try calling another phone and pressing the keys, you should hear a distinction between all single tones. (If not, please have your ears checked )
Did you have a good connection when calling the bank? The tones heavily rely on a halfway acceptable connection.
If you still want to hear distinct tones, try other diallers such as Go Dialler. They might be able to do it since it's onlce purely cosmetical.
It could be a problem on the bank's end because Google Voice works.

I'm going to agree with what's said here - while plopping noise IS annoying, I've not had any problems with automated "Press 1 for ..., press 2 for ..., or wait on the line and an operator will assist you" services - they all seem to work. So, the problem - for me at least - is purely cosmetic.
I'd assumed that the plop had been part of the theme that Sammy had applied to the SIII, in which case an experienced themer should be able to undo this in favour of some a bit less crappy. Although not being a 'droid developer or themer myself (merely a user) I've no idea where to start looking for that kind of info - fingers crossed that it's in a configuration file somewhere in the system.
I have been annoyed by this also. I myself am so use to hearing dial tones, that I'm just missing the sound, and just want them back.
I found this, where a user replaced the waterdrop with DTMF tones........but its for the Galaxy s......Good news is the zip has all the tone .ogg's. Maybe someone can look and it and figure out a way to port?

I'm also missing the well known DTMF tones and pissed about that bubbles.
"Nature inspired" concept and our device desing is very nice but this chage is absolutely stupid.
Nature don't has phones growing in trees an phone calling couldn't sound like a leaking tap.
Hope somebody was able to port this SII mod to our device...
