Issue with Nova Launcher (newbie) - Galaxy Note II Themes and Apps

This is my first android experience. I got the Note 2 and decided to try out Nova launcher after so many raving reviews. I download and installed it but whenever I click on my gmail widget, the theme reverts back to touchwiz. Everything seems to be okay. Is it not compatible with gmail? Or am I missing something (setting?) Thanks

Did you make nova launcher as default launcher?I also think that nova needs root for widgets.
To make nova default launcher go to nova settings and in "Select default Home" select nova

Yes, I did. But any time I click on my gmail widget, it reverts back. Once I hit the Nova shortcut icon, Nova comes back. I'd love to be able to use this launcher. I'm trying to stay away from rooting at this time. If it requires it, I'll just use stock TW for now.

If that's true, that's a bummer.. I've already uninstalled Nova but my agenda widget was working fine. It was the gmail widget that was causing TW to reappear after I closed out from the gmail widget. Don't use that many widgets, (mail, calendar, agenda, task) but if they dont play nice with Nova, I'll have to stick with TW.

Not True. I have Nova (prime) installed and have been able to use every widget. (it may be helpful to enable widget overlaping in the settings.)

Having the same problem on my SIII but I'm rooted and it only happens when I use the back button to get out of apps, it will back out of the app to touchwiz. I have nova as default so as soon as i hit the home button nova is back. It didn't start until I updated to Jelly Bean. On ICS nova was running smooth as butter.

Nova crashes a lot. I am rooted and have sent crash logs to the Dev and sent seperate emails and have heard nothing back. I like it but when looking through widgets in the drawer it crashes, when resizing from time to time it crashes and when attempting to move a widget yup it crashes. Not all the time but more than it should.

I'm using Nova Prime and not rooted and all of my widgets are working fine.

First try to remove the widget and add it again with nova.
Second clear the default action for TW (in application)
Last i advise you to freeze TW : in application too, normaly the button for uninstal is changed by a "Disable" button.

Try apex. Almost same deal as nova but I like it a little better
Is that a hemi? No silly its Paranoid Android!

Same thing happens here! I've tried everything. I think it might be having too many things widgets or some issues with custom home screen grids.
I thought it might be the snote page widget and this slide show widget. Removed both and now it doesn't crash when resizing.
When scrolling through widgets in the app drawer.... I found awesome widgets pro to be causing the problem so I just uninstalled that.
Really hope they fix this since I'm missing my slide show widgets-tried several and my snote widget.
Never going back to touchwiz though ha!
Mines the paid version if that helps. I really really like nova and the landscape mode. Just the issue with the widgets really bugs me, and the few hours I've spend trying to solve it.!

I have APW as well. It has been hit or miss with crashes. I restored the other day and things have been good for the most part. I am a heavy widget used which I am sure is the problem.

I know this phenomenon as well...and here´s my "solution": This was my experience everytime I got a new Samsung phone. Suddenly, Android jumps back from Nova to TW (e.g. Site Buddy on the Note). And it ALWAYS stopped this behavior after a few days of usage. It was always that easy

Hehe, that´s why I wrote "solution" in quotation marks! For me, there never was a real "solution" for this issue, the problem simply dissapeared after a few hours/days of usage!

I see! Let's hope it's the case for me too! Although I'm not sure since I've Been using nova for a while, the problems just stated though.

LPP force closes...

I am very disappointed in Launcher Pro Plus as after about a week of use, it begins to force close almost every time I power on my phone. What a good launcher to try? Thanks in advance!

Alright Then Well There's ADW Which Is Cool And There Is GOLauncher EX. Those Are The Top Two. I'm Using LPP, Sorry You're Having Issues With It.
I too had major issues with LPP on the X2. I was a long time LPP user, but switched to Go Launcher and I haven't looked back. I've been using it for a little over a month and I haven't had a single force close or redraw. I won't be going back to LPP anytime soon.
The only thing I missed from LPP when I switched were the calendar and agenda widgets that were built into LPP. I downloaded Colorized Widgets (free) and the widgets are nearly identical to LPP.
I was using the FB and Twitter widgets. Not sure if they were causing the issues! I would get freezes that sometimes turned into force closes. Attempted to contact the Dev..., UH but you know how that's goes sometimes with some of these guys!

It was FC on me everytime I swiped to switch screens - made it completely unusable for me. I have tried them all, and nothing beats ADW EX in my opinion.
Rock solid.
Same thing is happening to me. I already bought LPP from the market, it was like $3, I really don't want to shell out another $3 or $4, I think developers should be fixing problems with their apps. I've bought so many apps for a purpose and then later they stop working because of a new android version, or they just become buggy altogether.
Go Launcher EX is free and has all the features of the paid versions of LPP and ADW. Plus, the GO team is constantly updating it.
Im sure the widgets have something to do with it.. I have been using LPP since day 1 on gb and not had had a single FC or issue with it.. Its FAST, and i have a few widgets on it:
-the weather channel
-Scorebook
-Sticky Notes
-Touch Calendar Pro
-Digital Clock Widget
-BT/AP/Wifi/GPS On/Off
not a single issue.. also have a few shortcut icons there.
I even had the 3d effect on for a while, but i turned it off cause i liked the bigger icons top and bottom instead of the fold over effect.. which is nifty tho.
I run launcher pro and only have had 2 force closes since I updated to gb

Is it me or does it not have an option to hide the status bar? I just tried it out after using LP for a half day and immediately had to switch back. Using Launcher Pro since I updated to GB yesterday, it seems nice, but I haven't found many good themes for it to entice me to get the premium version. On the other hand I came from ADW, and while it seems like LP is better in a few ways, ADW has a large awesome list of themes you can install which has been tempting me to return to it.

Apex Launcher (ICS)

Here is another launcher for ICS. It is like stock launcher but have options like adw and launcher pro ie transparent app drawer, gestures, lock desktop etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452663
I'm definitely gonna try this out. Not sure how much experience yyouve had with this but installing as system app shouldnt remove the default launcher your rom comes with? ie most ICS roms come with trebuchet launcher?
No, it installs as normal app and you don't need to move it to /system folder for widgets to show up in app drawer.
good find on this launcher, it feels alot like launcher pro but totally revamped for ics
just needs resizable widgets

works great in ICS passion v 12
Guys and girls, just a heads up - updating Apex Launcher is apparently resulting in Force Close dialog ad nauseam - DO NOT update Apex for now or else you'll be stuck. Thankfully I had Avast installed and using the Avast Application Manager I managed to access Apex's App Info page and uninstalled updates, now back to normal but won't update it for now. Recent Apex reviews on Play Store show that this is not ROM-related or an isolated event. You've been warned. (If you read this that is)...

[Q] Nova Launcher?

Getting ready to pick up my new SGS3 in the next week or so - I'm pretty excited. One thing I'm wondering about: has anybody installed a different launcher instead of TW? I'm pretty fond of Nova Launcher and would like to keep using it instead, but don't know if there are any weird issues with trying to use it.
If nobody knows, I'll just post back after trying.
I already installed it and it's working perfect.

+1 - tried Apex this time first, and while I like the homescreen features, it won't do folders in the app drawer, which I love on Nova. I copied the backup of my Nova settings from my GSII to the backup location and restored it, and only had to tweak a couple things.
I've been using Apex launcher, works great.
FYI Go Launcher is working fine on mine.

Yes. Downloading Home Switcher makes it easier.
I've already tried Launcher Pro, Zeam Launcher, Nova Launcher, and Apex Launcher. They all work great. Though, I think I like the features in Apex the best. I'm sticking with that for the time being.
This reminds me of a question I had:
In the TW launcher you can use that big weather widget, but when you run a different lauancher from the market, that widget is not available. Does anyone know how to get that one to show up in a third party launcher?

Yeah, as much as I wanted to use TW, apex blows it away performance wise. The weather widget seems to be specific to TW. Its cool and all but I paid for beautiful widgets years ago and that one is just as good

I got Fancy Widgets for free a long time ago form the Amazon App Store. I'm using it instead. The onlything the TW weather widget has going for it is looks. I was just curious.

Apex and Nova do pretty much identical things. Nova just seems to be less problem free for me. No lags, shutters or slow downs. Can't say the same for Apex.

Probably so. I have the paid versions of both.
Nova launcher is based on the original ICS launcher source, as is the Trebuchet launcher included by default in CyanogenMod9. Development on Trebuchet has slowed to a standstill these past few months, though, so I'll probably be using Nova next (which has more features anyway), as I'm used to it being most similar to the vanilla ICS launcher.
+1 for nova, although I'm using the stock TW now

Widget's backup/restore

Considerably annoyed at the moment.
I've just spent every spare minute for the best part of a week creating a tile/ hub style set of home screens on ADW ex using metro UI widgets and ADW shortcuts ( about 22 widgets and 8 shortcuts on each of 8 screens). I backed up constantly as the theme developed and then ADW updated and all of the widgets broke! I restored from my last backup but none of the widgets have loaded, I just get placeholders saying ' there was a problem loading the widget'!
I've googled for a solution but have found none. I've also installed Go launcher, nova and apex and experimented with their backup/ restore functions with metro UI widgets but they're all the same, widgets don't restore.
Can anyone offer a solution to this because I'm crying into my keyboard at the thought of all the work I've lost and I'm definitely not going through it again without a way to effectively backup.
Your help/ advice is appreciated.

Try using Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox. Not sure about restore of Metro UI widgets though but I found that Nova always restored my other widgets quite easily. I'd also then try with GO Backup.
So is ADW Launcher finally finally updated? I better have a look at that
EDIT: Hmmm, I still have ADW Launcher Ex at 1.3.3.56 last updated in December 2011???

My current version is also 1.3.3.56 so why the hell did it update in the first place!!! I feel a deletion coming on (grrr)
I would like to use Titanium but I haven't been able to get any kind of 'root' method to work on my Prime yet (a problem I am addressing in another thread) I will have a look at Go backup and ROM Toolbox though.
Here, have a thanks
Just noticed we both joined in June 07, groovy, must be an omen
I believe Nova launcher has a widget backup-restore function... I haven't used Nova in a long time since I'm an Apex Pro user, but give it a shot!!
Thanks, NOVA's restore function just puts placeholders for widgets but you still have to reload each one manually and I have far too many for that.

Ha ha ha, yip, must be. Pity you've had no joy with your widget restore...
I once tried setting up a Metro UI but gave it up when it became so complex, and the Chameleon Beta was just about to start. So jumped on the beta but performance of Chameleon hasn't lived up to expectations...thus far. The one unique feature that had ADW going was the ability to set up actions/buttons to jump around between pages/Hubs. But now both Apex and Nova have this feature and I ran a very simplistic "Hubs" setup using Nova, Simple Text (this really is one of the most under-rated under-utilised customisations apps available!) and a coupla nice big widgets (Plume, HD Widgets for weather, Evernote etc) and I was quite content for a short while ...

I notice the Nova has the ability to import desktops from other launchers with a 'root helper' to assist with widget porting. I haven't been able to successfully root my Prime yet but I was wondering how effective this feature is?

Any suggestions?

Yeah, all my connectivity is fine, and If I download new apps with their own widgets while waiting in the widget drawer, I can drag a single one out, which is quite annoying to be honest. I thought it was the launcher at first too but maybe it's just the build? flashed an earlier nightlies and it works fine.
I got this with Trebuchet too. I just switched to Apex (which is much better in my opinion anyway) and widgets can be placed normally.
Hmm
