A few weeks ago i flashed Rafael's kernel, after a few days the phone rebooted during a call and bootlooped. I had to flash with odin back to stock kernel.
As i read, Rafael made a version with E3 recovery.
Which is better for my phone? E3, CWM or RZ recovery version?
I have a stock ROM, baseband XXLA2.
I use ext3 with Link2SD.
I think there are no more important infos.

I, too, my girlfriend has this phone and the kernel 201210210105 and the cell restarts on call .. how do I put the stock kernel? and I can no longer use DroidWall (iptables) but link2sd still work?
I would try the final version but I did not understand the warning

Hi,
You can flash back to stock kernel, when you flash the whole stock rom.
The first warning? Me too can not understand.
The second: when you want to restore a backup, which you backuped with an earlier version of the kernel, then you will (soft)brick your phone.

You can flash the E3 one....the CWM and RZR have some ext 4 problems. Rafael himself recommends the E3 version. There is a bug in the kernel...(rebooting). He will look into the matter as and when he gets time. Till then if you dont have problems with a few reboots, then use the kernel or stay with the stock one. :thumbup:

I think there is a conflict with other scripts like adrenaline engine and V6_SuperCharger. It's possible? It's possible that every time i try to wipe cache partition or Davlick cache i lost every app linked with link2sd?? I became crazy! :banghead:

Is the Jelly Bean 303 compatible with E3 version kernel? I tried to flash this combination but the phone booted to a black screen. CWM version seems to boot normally (albeit is a little unstable)
then with the stock kernel can not use link2sd? because I'm using now, then what? if I wanted to go back to the stock kernel as I do? and what precautions should I take first? and if I wanted to try the latest rafael's kernel What should I watch?

Yes, that kernel has problems with random reboots and there is no solution at this moment. However, the issue is not as bad as it may seem as "random" literally means random - you might get 3 days of stability and then 3 reboots on the 4th day. Anyway this is a relatively minor inconvenience and will be sorted out soon I'm sure. You can always go back to the stock kernel through Odin

Oh and if you do flash Rafael kernel, get the E3 version, the one that doesn't format system partitions to ext4. Or else you risk of soft bricking the phone on any of those random reboots I mentioned in the earlier post. Totally not cool

That's beccause you use CWM or RZR recovory instead of E3(stock recovory).
Flash stock rom trought Odin and everything will be allright !

After a few days of testing this is howto avoid reboots on s5830i with Rafael's kernel:
1. Disable 156MHz frequency - allow to scale CPU from 312 to 832Mhz. Best way to do this is to install "No frills CPU control" from google play
2. (optional) Increase voltage in kernel sources and re-compile it. This is easy if You have Ubuntu as scripts are prepared for this system. My values can be found in one of my previous posts.
After doing this I had no single reboot. Works 100%. I'm not sure if step 1 without step 2 will help much, but can guarantee that doing both will solve Your problems.
Quick backgroud (what I suspect):
1. Not every phone is ready for low voltages introduced by rafael. Some of them needs higher voltage - this is first source of reboots
2. It looks that some of s5830i does not like 156MHz, especially during call. Rafael has added this frequency for longer battery life, but as we can see it was not a good move for all the phones.
Bro it is important bcuz it is the only successful kernel for galaxy ace s5830i...u can get that on any custom rom

I can confirm this, after disabling 150mhz speed the phone got mostly stable. Still reboots sometimes under heavy app load but that is to be expected I guess, it might be caused by programs too

You dont need to revert on the original one before flash another custom. But you need to format dalvik cache and cache in recovery before flashing or you probably have a bootloop.
I suggest to make a backup of the rom in recovery, so If something goes wrong you can enter recovery and have the latest known working rom back in 2 minutes.
Please note flashing kernels always have a very small chance to corrupt your efs partition, its suggested to backup your efs folder before start play with roms and kernels. How to backup the efs, use the search tool of the forum

Thanks for that. I know how to backup efs. Can i just use nitrality instead of ADB? To flash ROMs does it need to be in a specific firmware like sgsl or is it ok to have different firmware from the base of a custom rom?

Depends on the kernel but usually it is listed in the kernel thread the how to (odin or clockworkmod), clockworkmode is already on your phone if you rooted it with cf-root.
Now, to enter clockworkmod recovery, just push volume up + home + power button until the S2 bootlogo appears, then wait few seconds.
About the kernel type, i always flashed any kernel despite of my baseband, the difference is not so big.
if something is not working, you can always youse the nandroid backup (the backup done with the recovery cwm (up+home+power) and get back to the previous rom with previous kernel.
Im not really in the kernel "how to" someone else can prolly give you more detailed info, but as for me, i flashed ninphetamine 2.05 and 2.1.3 in cwm and it worked.
But.. as always, the kernel developers got a how to install in their kernel thread, so just read those and be sure about if you need odin or clockworkmod, if you are not sure, DONT flash anything until you are sure on how to proceed or wich system to use for flashing, better keep an old kernel with a working phone than have a brick to hold the papers
PS: also almost all the roms on the S2 forum are flashable with the clockworkmod, only few (like the lite'ning) are flashable with odin.
Again, i know im boring, dont proceed if you are not sure, better ask 10 times instead brick your phone

Thanks for the reply guys. Coming back to my second question. What if i have KF1 and the rom i want to flash has a base of KI3, should i flash to stock KI3 first before flashing the custom rom or is it ok to flash a KI3 custom rom without flashing first to stock KI3?

The custom rom first, the kernel after.
I got the habbit to boot succesfully at least once the custom rom. If everything is ok i then flash the kernel. Better do 1 task at time.
You can decide to try the rom without change the kernel..and try a different one if you experience battery drain or other problems.

If i am on KH3 and want to flash a custom rom based on KI4 then i would flash stock KI4 and KI4 root first .
Custom rom flashed i will often try a different kernel later .

I have found that when i upgraded rom from gingerbread to ics that most custom kernals work with these roms ie now running with xxlpw ics (from gingerbread) with xwlp7 kernal. from what i have read on other posts and threads i could swap kernal to siya or any other as the mega good developers have made them (hotswappable) interchangeable as previous reply said swapping kernal might give you better battery or solve overheat probs.
Eg iwas running darkys rom with siya kernal v?something my phone rocketed temp in short time so i swapped kernal for an up to date one (could have used older one) it solved problem.
Anyone feel free to correct explination im still learning too lol

IMHO most stable kernel is paolo v5/v6, it overclocks quite good (with external app - e.g. No-frills), no problem with tethering (wifi or usb) or 3g. I think v5 has a little longer battery life.
To backup stock kernel you need to make nandroid backup (that creates backup of everything on your phone and in case of restoring, it will overwrite every change you made on phone since backup). To do that you need recovery (I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery, but there is also other recovery somewhere in our P500 thread).
Recovery is also needed to install new kernel. There is short guide how to do that in kernel thread (you need to install downloaded zip). New kernel doesn't wipe your msgs, contacts or apps if you made no mistakes.
Custom kernels do few things: fixes bugs made by lg, boost phone performance (different kernels give more or less boost), unlocks overclocking, changing governors (controls CPU clock transitions, and therefore battery life and smoothness) and scheduler (i have too little knowledge about android to say, what it should do, but i observed no difference between schedulers), gives you better battery life, fix touch lag (but not multitouch inversion lag bug).
You should try Paolo's and Franco's kernels and choose which one fits you better. Franco's need app to use wifi tethering but is faster than Paolo's.
I experienced more restarts on paolo's v6 and franco's than on v5 (my favourite so far, but there is also new paolo's based kernel that I haven't tested yet).

Hey Indian user, don't be afraid of flashing Kernel, you can always change it.. and I went twice to service centre with CWM 5.2.0... OC-480-729... franco's .35 kernel ... and they didn't came to know anything... but if you give them a phone with custom ROM then the'll reject it..

Is it true that after installing cw recovry n custom kernel we cant do a kdz stock flash..... Confirm me that after having custom kernel.. it should not lead the phone in non detecting position.. n if kdz works n can remove both kernel n cw recovery too then i think this is much easier ... i had seen a lot of post that o1 bricked by kdz flashing gb.... so if it possible then i have decided to flash froyo first n then update the phone via pc suite.... help me.... plzzz

yes if u flashed a cutom kernel a custom recovery or a custom rom you can use kdz just turn on the usb debugging mode in setting>application>development to flash official stock froyo or official gb.. by using kdz method everything will be reverted back to stock recovery, kernel, rom, everything.. i suggest you to firstly flash the stock froyo using kdz method so you will be psychologically satisfied that you can go to stock

Hello there, and yes, i'm a noob
Tried custom roms and was never satisfied with them. Back to stock, and yet missing being a poweruser if you know what i mean! What are the recommended hacks/mods/tweaks that one can apply to takeover stock firmware? I have already rooted, tried changing dpi, playing with cpu governors, etc...but I want something reliable that can really improve the stock firmware. Like, is a kernel going to make it any better? Assumed that I do want to stick with stock (no pun intended) at least until CM9 (if ever).

Thank you for your reply. As i said, i already rooted. it's a good idea to remove useless apps, i'll totally do this.
And so you say lag free and turboboost can be helpful? Won't they break or mess the perfection of stock rom (irony)? it's not worth flashing a better kernel, maybe with more governors/schedulers or ext4 support?

CF-Root
Even I am on stock XWKT7 and I dont have any problems with CF-Root. The phone is very fast, smooth and battery life is good too

So here's what i did. Wiped cache/dalvik cache, flashed b84. then wiped again and flashed turboboostv8.5, and then lagfreev3. Then i rebooted and in CWM Manager i flashed b84fix. Then i installed CF-Root-ext4-v1.3-Addon.apk found in Chainfire's thread, but when i launch this app it says that a CF-Root kernel was not detected and therefore ext4manager may not function properly. i ignored this and choose convert to ext4 option nonetheless. phone reboots into recovery, does something very fast and then goes back to normal functioning. seems like nothing happened. what should i do?
P.S: i have understood that i need to use another ext4manager on s5830. i am successfully converting to ext4 fs. thanks
Bcoz u have to install kernel via cwm app not install zip from recovery...
The b84 fixed is a kernel not to flash in recovery but in cwm app...u have option to install kernel there...

Thank you, but i did install b84 in cwm recovery. in fact my phone is running cf-root kernel at the moment. as i stated before, everything runs nicely. as far as i can tell, this thread can be closed as well. Props to everyone who helped!

There are a lot of stable roms. Do you want touchwiz based or AOSP based? I don't have an opinion on AOSP roms because I've barely used any of them.
For Samsung based roms, Shoman94's roms are very stable and popular. That's what I use as my daily driver. For ICS, use SHOstock2, but for the latest JB use SHOstock3.

When you flash a new ROM you will have to wipe. Also that's caused by using a foreign kernel aka one from galaxys2root.com

Siyah-v2.6.14-att-CWM , apparently I wiped it again , back to square one (she aint gonna be happy) , this is it still wont recognize wifi ?? what else can I do ,? I want to flash a rom with this keneral can I flash any of the roms you mentioned? will that fix my wifi? should I try to re-install this kernel , or use entropys? I hat to sound new , but I dont have this problem on the note or my a500 , I feel lost in here!

If I remember correctly, I think that version of the Siyah kernel was put out by zedomax on GalaxyS2Root website. That kernel combined with UCKK6 was always a problem. In fact, that package was always a problem.
Anyway, the kernel has ClockworkMod Recovery. You should decide on a good rom, as discussed above, download the zip file and use usb to transfer it to the sdcard on the phone, then boot into recovery, perform a wipe data/factory reset, and flash the rom. It doesn't matter that you are on Gingerbread right now. You can flash either an ICS or JellyBean rom because the package will contain the complete system and kernel and modem, everything.

Enter recovery by holding down all three of vol + vol - and power buttons continuously until it boots into recovery. If it won't boot into recovery, then it might be a bad flash.
Thank you, I got the siyah kernel from a thread here,when I first got the phone (off ebay )it did in fact have the wrong kernel,I used entropy flash back to get back,I guess I did something else,but I will use one of the roms you mentioned ,glad we have you here ,I've been messing with wp7 the last few years and finally getting back to android (cept been playing with boot loaders in a500)

Strangely enough ,o couldn't get restore to work from cwm BUT there was a cwm app I had and when it came back all my backups were there I went back to one to get back to where I was,will flash the roms you talked about for sure at 20% now so will have to wait

Pls i want to upgrade to Shostock3 jb, apart from d shostock Rom what other installations do i need on my phone to enable me flash d shostock3 Rom successfully?

It is exactly that, a counter, and the only purpose of it as far as we know is warranty protection, so I would say no, it's not important. On the other hand, most folks don't like the splash screen with the yellow triangle, but you can remove that easily enough if you still get it on boot.

I don't also have warranty so the flash counter is not my concern here, getting Shostock3 JB running on my phone is. pls my question is are there any other packages apart from the Shostock3 Rom that i would need to download to enable me flash the Shostock3 Rom?
What i have at the moment is the "I777UCKH7 Return/Unbrick to Stock with Root" that i downloded thru your signature. Dose this contain everything i would be needing to successfully flash the Shostock3 Rom?

No. You also need to install a custom kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery. Please read through the guide "How to install custom firmware without incrementing the flash counter" (link in sig) because it will help you see how things fit together.

A while earlier i tried the lupus kernel. but from the moment i boot, the phone starts heating like mad. I didn't get a rom just got stuck in the boot process So i flashed stock with lupus kernel. as soon as it turned on, battery would heat up. Baattery life was crazy ( like 4 hours or so).I didn't have wifi or data then ( long story), so i don't know if its governor based problem.
Thing is i wanna know whether it was caused by the governor and whether changing it would help the issue.

Depending on how the developer set up lupus kernel, it may boot up fully overclocked, which could be as high as 2.2 GHz. Next time, make sure you have something like incredicontrol (from the play store) loaded onto your device and then flash over Lupus kernel. As soon as it boots, use
incredicontrol to set the cpu max freq to something safe for your phone.
With lupus kernel you will need to flash the wifi modules with CWM recovery in order to get wifi to work.

Lupus wifi modules are from here: http://dds.vigaas.com/kernels/LuPuS_kernel/Version3/ You should download both the modules zip and the ti wlan zip and flash them both. One contains the stuff for wifi and the other stuff for things like OTG.
I am not sure what you are asking about with the nandroid back up. If the back up is made by the same version of Recovery then it should restore with out errors. For example if the kernel that made the back up had CWM v5 and Lupus kernel has CWM v5 then you should be OK. But if your version of Lupus kernel has CWM v6 or TWRP, then you are likely to have issues with the restore.

I think there is a downloard link for Lupus kernel with TWRP, it is the same link where you get the modules. I believe there is also a dual version (has both cwm and twrp). Check the OP for Lupus kernel.
I think you will have issues with trying to restore a back up made with CWMv6 using a kernel with CWMv5. Might work the other way around,
but I am not completely sure. Certainly, the back up made with CWM and TWRP are not compatible.

I am not sure if you need to flash a new ROM or not. It will depend on whether the kernel and the ROM are compatible. As long as you are staying with ICS based ROMs, I would first try to flash the new ROM with out factory reseting. This way you won't lose all your apps that are in
/data. So I would:
1. Flash new kernel
2. Boot into the new kernel's recovery
3. Flash the ROM that you want
4. Flash the modules that you need for the new kernel (these have to be flashed after the ROM is flashed)
5. Flash anything else you like.
6. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
7. Boot into ROM.
I rarely do a factory reset unless I am changing different versions of Android (ICS to JB for example) or if the new ROM is behaving badly. If I have to, I typically get all the apps back from the play store. Often times the play store does it automatically, but you can do it really fast from your computer. I also use Flashbackups: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951478 but I had to change the update-binary to get it to work properly on my device.

Titanium Backup is also good if you are new to android btw I think in some roms wiping dalvik-cache and cache just before flashing causes bootloop so I think he should first check without wiping them, then wipe if necessary.

if its a dual recovery, how do i get cwm and twrp individually? (theres only one volume down button ) or is it volume up or something else for twrp

Just delete the first three lines from it or send me your updater script and I'll do it for u... But still if it doesn't gets fixed the zip might be corrupt and u may have to download it again...
