New Development - Android

Greetings fellow Android Devs!
I'm currently in the process of building a ROM for use on Galaxy Nexus (maguro) devices. For various reasons, I would like to remove the settings shortcut on the notification drawer on AOSP 4.1.2. I have done some customization and I'm relatively familiar with Android and Java (for a newb at least). But I was wondering if it would be possible to point me in the right direction for how to do this.
I'm not too fussed about the icon, I would just like to know where the code is in the AOSP that tells the Settings button to go to settings.
Thank you all very much for your help.
P.S. This is my first thread, I am used to helping others or searching endlessly for my answers, but I believe this is just beyond my knowledge and searching capabilities (I have attempted and failed so far).
If I'm breaking any rules, please let me know and I'll remove the thread and try to redo it or post elsewhere.
Oh! And...
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Eclipse with the relevant plugins.
I'm also familiar with using kitchens for cooking ROMs.

best is always to go from stock, as it forces you to implement things and know what you're doing.
copy cyanogen do not make you a "rom cooker"
Hey Guys,
I'd like to get involved with making Android ROMs as well. I have a Droid and would LOVE to make my own Droid ROMs . I am already a student software developer so I don't mind getting into the nitty gritty, in fact, the deeper the better, so I can fully learn how to build and work with Android. I also hope to be able to make Android apps eventually too. I know Java and Perl fairly well and have recently started C and C++.
Any suggestions for where to start would be greatly appreciated, i.e. tutorials, videos, guides, what languages I need to know, what tools I should use (eclipse, etc., with what plugins, etc.). Thanks a bunch, and let me know if you guys have ideas for apps you'd like to see on the Market .

i am trying to compile from aosp. since i have no programming experience at all, it is a slow learning process so far. my ubuntu has redo and git running perfect now. i have eclipse working but have not used it at all yet. androidsdk 2.2 adb is fine but fastboot is a hassle.
so far, two froyo alphas both flashed but buggy. not one decent tutorial that makes the kernel compile/framework/gapps process clear
My AOSP 2.2 for passion/n1 alpha2 is pretty darn solid now. It took mushing together instructions from 5 incomplete tutorials to fill in the blanks.
What a great feeling to have a ROM not kanged. The Repo/Git tool has gotten easy to use after several long sessions using it in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Anyone on the same OS, I suggest you research and install both Java 1.5 & 1.6 and get use to switching between the two. Also, I have not yet used Eclipse but it isinstalled and it works with SDK.
The Android Open Source site does a decent job of walking you through Repo...Git...and getting the source. After getting that far, I stumbled through setting up a "vendor tree" and looking through all the folders and files to see what it was all about. Much of it was totally over my head. But after attempting several crap builds, the "compile" process is sinking in a bit.

[PHONEGAP] possible problems with Gingerbread?

Hello everyone,
I don't know if PhoneGap is in anyway known and used by users of this forum, but this is the usual place where I normally find all my answers and I need to understand a strange behaviour of my app.
Unluckily I'm working on a thesys project and I signed for a closure contract so I can't provide any kind of source, but I'll try and explain what errors I'm getting.
Let's start with saying that I tested my app (built with jQueryMobile and PhoneGap 1.3.0) on three different environments:
my computer running Windows 7 and Chrome
my LG O2x running CyanogenMod 7.1 Nightly
my Samsung Corby i5500 running Motafoca FW based on FroYo
on my computer and my FroYo device the application runs properly, but when I test it on my LG, problems comes up:
once run the application, it just opens every single page making all the requests it has to (there are many buttons that would lead you to a different div and when you ask them, they make their requests, but when I try it on GB, it just makes all the requests at once, showing me all the pages, without any reason.
then, when I'm using webSql, on FroYo it runs properly, while on Gingerbread it looks like it neither save its own data.
I found on the net some links (here and here) but since they are quite old bugs, I thought they would have been fixed.
Can anyone help me figure this out?
Thanks
Tiwiz

How do you develop and app?

Hi all. Feel great to join such a huge forum and I have a question. Yeah. New stupid member with studpid question. But I hope it's not stupid enough and you guys be able to answer it(hope so).
It's kinda simple question for all of you who have some experience in Android Freelancing. For example you get an job request to build a Android Bluetooth App to detect other devices and some other functionality which client asked to do. So, what is your first steps to create the app using Android SDK Eclipse or whatever(PhoneGap, Titanium, etc...)? Creating from the scratch or already have pre-build code to start with. I always curious how developers start making app for clients, so it would be awesome if someone have something to say in this situation. Appreaciate any answers. Thank you

[Q] Start Theming without Device

Hey guys/girls! ;D
For the past few months, I've wanted to theme Android devices. Not just create a theme, but fully customise a ROM; so that a user can install a different ROM; since my customisations will run deep.
My first theme is to port perfectly the TouchWiz UX, since for some devices a "perfect" port does not exist. However the problem is that I don't have that specific device. So I'm stuck, and have been looking for ways around this; but no luck sink decided to ask this question to you guys/girls; whom are experts in this area.
Would it be possible for me to customise a device without actually owning the device? Can I not just use the SDK to view my development? If so, would it also be possible to customise a pre-packaged ROM? For example, develop/theme on top of CyanogenMod; and still view my customisations as I debug them on my computer, still without the device?
Or am I put of hopes? Do I need the device?
Sorry for so many questions, and for a long post. I sincerely appreciate your help. Thank you very much.
EDIT (15/10/2013): If anyone is also interested in an answer to this question (even if you're seeing this years ahead), feel free to post here to bump the thread.

[Q] How to create system app in Android Studio that will compile with AOSP ROM?

NOTE TO MODS: If this thread is in the wrong forum, my apologies; please move it to the appropriate forum if necessary.
I've been building my own personal AOSP ROMs for a while now (currently based on LineageOS 14.1, and before that, earlier versions of CyanogenMod), and have incorporated some new settings and features over time, such as the Substratum theme engine and Dirty Unicorns' DUI navbar. Highly configurable ROMs like AICP, DU, RR, etc. are excellent, but are honestly overkill for my needs, which was my motivation to "roll my own" (as well as to gain some behind-the-scenes experience with Android ROMs).
One of the things that these ROMs have in common is a separate settings app (like AicpExtras and DU-Tweaks) that is called from the Settings menu. These apps are incorporated into the ROM (ala Email, Gallery, Browser, etc.) and built using the AOSP build structure. I'd like to create something similar, using Android Studio; I know how to create a standalone app with it, but to (A) create one that can be built using the AOSP build structure as a packaged app, and (B) include access to the ROM's various internal features (i.e. android.provider.Settings) that are only available to system apps, is eluding me. Right now, the new settings are scattered throughout Settings; my goal is to put them all under one roof, so to speak.
(Note that my particular case involves a standalone settings app, but this technique could obviously apply to any app that is intended to be included as a package and built within the AOSP build system.)
I've been searching for information on how to do this, but either it's not out there, or the info is eluding me due to not searching for the right thing. That's why I'm turning to you guys for help. If anyone could offer some guidance and point me in the right direction(s), I would be very grateful. Thanks!
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Has no one tried to do this? Or is it just a matter of having asked in the wrong place?
EDIT: The mods moved the thread to a more appropriate forum. Thanks! Hopefully, it'll get more notice here.
Did you get help?
I'm in a similar situation, any tips or pointers?
