Too good to be true? (Craigslist sell) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Put my note 1 up for sale on CL for $375 including lots of extras, got a email reply with a $450 offer to ship it to Florida and he would pay via paypal. Seems odd he would offer $75 over asking price to have it shipped. Wondering if there's anyway I can get scsmmed vis PayPal or maybe he could do something to the phone after a factory reset. I never had issues in the past selling on CL, but this just seems to strange.

Definite scam. Happens every time I list on craigslist.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Probably a fake PayPal email. It'll say money sent but being held until item received. If you have to come on a forum to ask this stuff, that should tell you a few things...

The rule of thumb is that if it seems too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.

I got the same email when I listed it today. Definitely a scam
Sent from the TermiNOTEr!

Every time I list something I get an email from someone wanting me to ship. Always deal locally in person in a busy restaurant. I always have them come in and sit down with me. If it's a good deal then they'll have no problem doing this. Gives you/them the chance to use the device in good light. I've bought and sold quite a few android devices and iPhones on Craigslist.

I hide my email and put "text/call:" and my Google Voice number. Just so no spam and you have to be a real person.

My rule of thumb is never use paypal when on craigslist.

I got this same scam, difference for me is that they wanted me to send the phone to the Republic of South Africa!!! The shipping cost they were willing to front me was no where near enough lol. They must have been scammers in training. I think PayPal is fine for Craigslist so long as you don't ship anything until the funds are moved from Paypal to your checking account.
BTW, do any of you expect an updated variant to the GNote 2 in the next 6mos? Maybe new colors or an "HD/Max" version?

Never ever EVER do any Craigslist deals with anyone who even so much as MENTIONS paypal. It is definitely a scam. CL is supposed to be for local people to meet in person to exchange goods & services, it's not meant to be another ebay.

I disagree. I was a buyer looking for an Alpinestar motorcycle jacket that had been discontinued. I searched all online shops including eBay and could never find a new/used one... that is until I ran across a seller on CL. Needless to say they were not local. The only method of payment I was willing to use was PayPal.
As the seller (of anything, not just phones) you don't have anything to lose if you wait for funds to appear in your PayPal account. What this scam requires is that you rely solely on an email for verification, which is ridiculous. It's not really a PayPal scam because that would suggest that there is some loop hole within the PayPal payment system. It's just another dressed up email scam.
As a seller, I was kinda relieved someone wanted to deal over PayPal. I don't really like having to give people my phone number and meet them. I know people that will rob you in broad a$$ daylight. You can scream "Hey, that guy just took my phone!" but who is really gonna help you? Most likely people are just gonna watch and feel sorry for you and keep it moving.

What would you do...if you suspect someone stealing?

Ok.....heres the deal. About 3 weeks ago i saw a ad on craigslist about a epic touch for sale. I use Textplus App when I text someone on Craigslist...but anyways, i texted the person to inquire about the phone.. He said he was a manager at the Sprint Kiosk in the mall down the street from my job. He said that he was selling the phone for $500. I was like, thats full price. So I declined and took my business elsewhere.
About a week later i see an add in Craigslist from the same person, this time selling a iphone 4. I use my sister's phone to send the guy a text about the iphone 4. Again he says its brand new and still in its wrappings and he's selling it for $400. I passed again...
So last Friday, i see another ad on Craigslist for a Epic Touch, brand new and sealed. I make contact with the person, via regular text. Its the same person as before. He tells me that he's selling the Touch for $500 or willing to trade it for a good computer.
I offered him a laptop or two phones. He accepted the offer but after a couple hours, i contacted him to let him know i had to think about it.
Yesterday he texted me and now says he has a brand new Iphone 4s, wrapped and seal and that he can get me any color i want. He told me he'll sale it to me for $650 or my laptop, one of my phones plus $150...i said, hell no. Thats too much to give away. I then tried to call his bluff. I told him to text me a copy of the receipt showing he paid $650+ for the phone. He said that he didnt have a receipt and that it was a direct ship to his job (the sprint kiosk). He said that the order receipt doesnt have his name nor a price on it. I then told him that i noticed that he was selling a new phone almost every week and selling them for full retail. He claimed that he has a family plan and that since he's a sprint employee, he gets phones for the 2 year price.
My guess is that he's stealing the phones and then selling them. I find it strange that someone has a different high end phone every week and brand new at that.
What do you all guess?

I'd say if your worried about it then make a call to Sprint and report what info you have. Then it will be up to them to look into it. If they don't, you did your part and Sprint can only blame themselves.
if it's a corporate kiosk he could get fired for that whether he bought them legitimately or not. our employment agreement says we can't sell phones at all as it's a conflict of interest since you would be competing with the company you work for. most of the kiosks that are left are 3rd party but i'm sure they have a similar agreement

if youre going to accuse someone of stealing you better be sure they are. it sounds like you do not have any real evidence to prove that he is.
Still sounds fishy.
I would give what info I had, the links on craigslist, and let Sprint or the 3rd party store take care of it themselves. Let them do the investigating.

I'm basically just going off of speculation and assumption. But all in all, it just doesn't sound right....selling high end phones every week, brand new, can't produce a receipt...then says it was a direct order to his job....(the spirit kiosk)....sounds fishy..

I would still call Sprint and have them transfer you to the right department and have them investigate, try HR - Human Resources. BE SURE TO CALL AND HAVE THEM INVESTIGATE!!! Ask if they can call you back and let you know what the story is. Good luck!!! Make sure to call, because this will make prices go up if he is stealing!!!
What do you mean prices will go up?

First off bro, don't mean sound rude or anything cause that ain't me...but if something doesn't seem right to a person, they normally stay away...no matter how good the deal may be. I definitely don't need the police knocking at my door saying I received stolen property or sprint contacting me telling me the phone I have was stolen....
Also, remember he texted me this past time about the iphone...I didn't contact him. In addition, I don't think i NEED cold hard evidence...this isn't "The Peoples Court"...lol. But I do feel that maybe Sprint or whomever should look into the matter...

I'm going to be honest here. I used to work for tmo in the past and I sold phones on Craigslist, **** ton of them. I was the #1 rep in my district for a very long time and I had new devices falling out of my ass lol. I won so many phones from HTC, moto, Nokia, Samsung, blackberry etc I didn't know what to do with them. Before tmo changed up everything I think I won 2 or 3 phones a month. They said we couldn't sell them but what the hell else were I supposed to do with all these smartphones? Was I wrong? probably. Did I care? Ehh not really I was young and just saw this $_$. The moral of the story is either hes winning them in contest/drawings or has stealing them and others are in on it. I wouldn't get involved though let sprint etc catch em!

Getting ripped off/scammed on eBay.

Hi everyone, I was looking forward to join the I717 community but sadly, I don't think I'll be getting my Note because of some ******* who decided to rip off people thru ebay, I was so happy by the fact that I was getting a new Note, and now I'm trying to get my money back and the guy keeps giving excuses, ebay told me to wait until Saturday to open a didn't receive item case, but for what I know is gonna take some time, the bad thing is that I sold my Sensation and my T-Mobile's Galaxy S2 to be able to buy the Note and now I'm stuck with a Prepaid LG Flip phone. Beware when using ebay, don't wanna end up like me. Bad thing $600
Anyone here can point me on the right direction...

Buyers are always covered. Which is tough for selling. But it gives buyers some confidence that they have some sort of recourse. Without buyers ebay can't survive, even with millions of sellers
Only way the seller can win the dispute, is if he can show tracking signature delivery to the registered pay pal address.
It takes 10 days at least, sorry to hear you have to go through this, it will just take some patience.
Try not to instigate or piss the seller off. Just keep it cool and let ebay/paypal work for you. At times they may end up sending you the item damaged on purpose, then the claiming gets harder.
I used Ebay to get mine and they were a great seller i believe their name was cellstoreusa and also got a 2 year squaretrade warranty as well I would just say next time make sure you are buying from those sellers who have the highest ratings, Im sorry this happened to you though i hope you get your money back

From what I heard, you have to use eBay for shipping in order for eBay to trust your tracking information. If you shipping the stuff youself without using eBay to produce shipping labels, you are SOL.
Not true.you have to use a shipper that provides online tracking our a method where deliver can be confirmed. You can use USPS with delivery confirmation, UPS with tracking, Fed Ex, DHL, etc.as long add you can show that it had tracking and show proof it was delivered via online for example. I am a Powerseller on EBay btw.

Don't worry. You will get your money back, but it will take some time. I got scammed some years ago. It took a few weeks of going back and forth with ebay, paypal, and the seller. Paypal finally awarded me the money. But (at that time) they could only award me from money that was in his account. That may have changed. Best of luck.
Can't provide any direction, but I"ll chime in with my own Note from ebay experience.
Won one on ebay last month, posted as "brand new". When I received it; no stylus, aftermarket rear cover, and aftermarket battery. Most likely stolen Returned and still waiting on refund.
Had a similar experience... Long time ago with a 300+ dollar phone
Hit that bastard up with a paypal claim.. No seller likes those. Keep all emails and records of attempts to contact. You are protected via paypal "xxxx.xx" amount of dollars

Sorry to hear that, sounds like you may have been sold a Best Buy demo unit. Those are usually missing the Stylus, battery door, but everything can be bought OEM except the box. No box to compare the IMEI usually is cause to be alert and weary.
I was offered a phone in that condition, while testing it, it would go into the orange demo screen and randomly show feature videos. But it can be reset via recovery.
I mostly buy my devices locally on Craigslist. Usually cheaper than ebay and I get to really test it out before paying. Not say youre guaranteed anything tho. Still a risk. YMMV
I've always wondered, how would PayPal get you your money back if the seller just closed their account (banking account)? Do they actually come out of pocket for you?

If OP paid by CC or bank to paypal to seller you can dispute the charge through them
If you paid with funds already in your paypal account you have to wait through the process unfortunately (a good reason why I always pay via one of my credit cards, and not my paypal balance)

I just sold my Iphone on Ebay and they are so anal about protecting the buyer, I was upset on how long I had to wait to get my money. Now I'm not that upset about it. If you do exactly what they want and either use Ebay to print yor shipping label or upload your tracking data immediatley, there's no way to get ripped off except maybe for missing items or defects. I didn't get my money until Ebay got confirmation of delivery. I then had to wait 4 days to get my money from Paypal. I don't know what takes so long for Paypal unless they try to mske a couple days interest off my money.

64GB Mobile Ultra Best Deal!!!!!

UPDATED!!!! (09/06/2012) I got the money refund back to PayPal by eBay support since the seller did not reply to my email regarding this product not came. Whoever ordered this product with this link, you should do the same.
UPDATED (8/26/2012) I still hasn't receive the SD card and it was suppose to come within 23rd of August. I already contact the eBay seller, and if the seller did not reply back within 2 day, I will contact eBay and PayPal about this issue.
UPDATED (8/15/2012) I have not receive the SD-Card in the mail yet. The Seller claimed it will come between 15 to 25 business day. I ordered on July 22nd and should be here between now until 23rd of August. Will wait and see...
I bought a Sandisk Mobile Ultra 64GB for $16.99. I know it sound too good to be true, but when I check the seller feedback, percent, reputation, I figure I go ahead and order since it only a measly 17 buck. It also stated it brand new. You don't have to order it. Once I got the item, I will do a test to see if this item really is a Sandisk owned brand that have transfer speed of 30mb.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SanDisk-Mob...=932427320887601399&pid=100012&prg=1014&rk=1&
I promise I will come back once I got the item and give you a full review of the seller and the item.
Good lord, $17 and free shipping. No way it's real, but if it works who cares for that price.
:highfive:thanks for this!

it is a good deal. But from my experience Paypal doesn't handle international disputes. I was burned for $100 over fake thumbdrives. The seller has a lot of reviews but most are for small things, he has no items listed at all and it doesn't look like he's planning on doing so.. BUT with all that said, $17 is worth the risk! Poll: Craigslist Or Ebay For Selling Old Devices?

Just wondering what everyone's preference is.
I jumped on the $49 refurbish Galaxy S3 deal to upgrade my wife's iPhone 4.
I may look into upgrading to Note 2 as soon as a refurbish is available (3-6 months?).
Android devices get AWFUL resale value (my Note 1 is worth less than my wife's iPhone 4) from online sites like Amazon/Gazelle, so only way to go is Craigslist or Ebay. I am in New York City so just wondering what is everyone's experience? Her phone is in great condition but power port and home button are not as reliable as it once was (both typical issues for iPhone's).
In my experiences you're going to get the top dollar amount from E-Bay selling your device unlocked. But then you have to deal with shipping, feedback, eBay's %, etc.
I strictly use Craigslist. I'm usually flexible on the price. Plus, start a little high and leave room to barter. Everyone likes to barter. It makes them feel like they got a better deal. You also don't have to wait while your auction ends. You get cash as soon as you sell.
Now, this all depends on the device you're selling. A Note1: Craigslist. Much more common device and not as high of a price tag. A Note2: EBay. Catch the big market of people willing to drop $600-800 for a device. You'll rarely find that on CList.

Both are good place to buy phone from provided the seller can put it in writing that the device will not be reported stolen, insurance claim or lost.
The device may work for several months or so, then suddenly it won't. The seller has then reported it either stolen lost or claimed insurance on it, the IMEI or ESN is then block by the carrier. Buyer beware.
I prefer eBay simply because you can get a good idea of who you are buying from or selling to by their feedback scores. You can require buyers have certain scores or higher as well as require immediate payment through PayPal. You can charge them shipping. One con is you get hit with a seller fee of around 9% if it sells. But craigslist people are more likely to try to haggle your selling price.

I liked ebay till they got greedy between their fees and paypal fees, your losing at least 25% of your profit. You have to raise your price to offset them and nobody will buy.
The last 2 devices I sold weren't touched on ebay. Must have relisted for free 6 times. I put them on craigslist and they sold in 3 weeks. I got $275 for a 2 year old iphone 3gs-32gb/wht (mint) and $275 for my 6 month infuse (mint). I would not have gotten nearly this much profit on ebay. And Craigslist is free.
Beware of people wanting to pay via paypal and have you ship when selling on craigslist. Usually a scam.
Deal face to face and cash only. Sell local.
I like CL but man the spam and bs you get is really getting out of hand

There needs to be some admins that clean it up like the ones in xda.

I dont think that would help. What they do (spammers) is send you an email from one address and the reply is to another. And then the spamming begins. "I like to arrange for payment and shipment and I am going to pay you x dollars more than your asking price blah blah blah. Or its a simple as "is this item still available for sale" seems innocent but nope. they also put the signature as if they are emailing from a cell phone. Smart F ers.....
Use swappa.com for selling android devices, $10 flat flee and PayPal free.

One thing I've noticed on eBay when selling my smart phones is that buyers will refuse to pay. One time the guy was bidding on multiple phones and thought he paid to much for mine. Another I never received any communication from the buyer.
I was able to realist but what a hassle and time consumer. Then of course you have the eBay and PayPal fees.

I usually sell my phone on CL before ebay. Only thing i hate selling on Cl is people spamming me with i'll pay by paypal and you ship it to Africa etc.... Ebay is ok for me if i'm buying. Hate to deal with all the hassle of shipping and then paying ebay and paypal after your item is sold!
Yeah the spam lately on cl is out of control

Swappa is so easy. Ebay is my thorn.
I am ttrying to sell my old hero. I posted it as rooted and on a custom Rom. Now the guy has my funds on hold because he can't get it activated. Such a pain. Swappa is so simple and easy. It is where i picked up my note.

I listed my og note on Craigslist, eBay and Amazon. Ebay is not the place to sell of you want to get the most money for your sale and there are many people that buy and no pay so it becomes a hassle and time wasting. Amazon is the safest one if you want to sell something quick (given a competitive price) I had a guy purchase it for 420 but after shipping and fees I was going to make 375$. I had my listing on Craigslist until the last day when I had to ship it and I received a text from a guy interested on it. We met up 400$ after (made sure real bills) I went home and canceled the Amazon order. Lollll Craigslist is all about patience and knowing when to lower your price as time passes. Hence I started to sell my note for 470 plus accessories lolll

I've bought and sold ten devices on CL in the past couple years. Its a great place to get good deals.
I never use eBay anymore really. Not like I used to.
Three times on eBay I have had an auction go through the roof on price within the first couple of hours only to find at the end of the auction that the "buyer" was a fake. I have no proof, but I think other sellers use throwaway email addresses to artificially boost the price on competing auctions. Case in point: I listed my wife's old Galaxy Skyrocket when I bought her the refurb Note for $49. Within 2 hours of the listing start (at $80), the auction hit $719. Seven days later at the end of the auction, no payment. After filing the complaint, no word from eBay. And they are STILL going to charge me the listing fee even though the buyer was bogus.
Then on the Skyrocket I tried Craig's List. Four Western Union and PayPal offers for twice as much as I was asking for within the first hour if I would "ship immediately". One even sent a bogus "Western Union" payment email without knowing my name, email address or virtually anything else. I updated the add to say "local pickup only" and next came the "please drive the phone to my location as I don't own a car" messages. The ad lived for a day on Craig's List before I pulled it.
Years ago, I sold a couple of things on Amazon's auction site. I am not sure how to do that today, and even if I did (assuming they still do that), I am not sure I would get much because I am not convinced there is the same traffic there.
I went to Gazelle. They sent me a box and when they got it, a $125 e-gift card from Amazon. I probably could have had more selling it myself, but who has the time to deal with the BS? I guess I was lucky in that Gazelle saw value in what I had. I have a Asus Transformer TF700T that I am about to sell, and they aren't interested in that. And I hate the thought of having to use either Craig's List or eBay, but I am not sure there is another way.
I sold one of my old CB radio mics on eBay, as is, no returns, because it was old, and I can't control how the buyer hooks it up. The buyer complained to eBay it didn't work, they MADE me return his money, then a couple weeks later I got a different mic back. You have to be extremely careful how you word your ad, I try not to use them anymore.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the XDA Marketplace. I've bought and sold many devices on both Ebay and CL but I have gotten the best results lately right here. No fees, cool community, and the ability to negotiate trades is great! I run an electronics store and I'm going to start selling some of our clearance merchandise on the market if it doesn't break any rules.

Xperia Z2 at $130 on Ebay!!

What is this? Legit or fake?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321441546170#shpCntId
that is mistake. most likely the auction starting price. good luck if he ships
Most likely fake, look at his feedback

"eBay member since May 25, 2014"
"ship the item with USPS Priority mail", although the seller is in HK. Shouldn't it be Hongkong Post?
It may be just a simple mistake or an idotic faker
Please don't give this scammer your money. He/she has no previous sales on eBay, so there is nobody to corroborate whether the person exists.
More importantly, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to sell a $600-650 phone for $130. I'm sorry, but bank errors in your favor only occur in Monopoly...
LOL ... eBay lesson : Don't ever buy from a seller whose feedback score is 0
Lol!! I like those pictures of the non-genuine stuff!
One thing to keep in mind. If the price it too good to be true, it's counterfeit. Don't fall to ePrey!!
Just buy it using Paypal. Then if it is fake or doesn't show up, you can easily get a refund.
