[Q] Transfer contacts from S1 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my S3 today (I9305 actually), what's going to be the easiest way of getting my contacts off my S1? All of my contacts are joined multiple entries, mostly a mix of Google, Facebook and Phone contacts. Most of them are synced with Google, but some aren't for some reason.
I'd like to keep them in their organised, joined state if possible so I don't have to go through all of that rigmarole again. Would Exporting to SD and then Importing work, or backing up and restoring with Kies?
Thanks

contact app. export as vcf file. import it into your s3. everything should follow including pics and fb locale data
EDIT: you do have to resync your facebook contacts when you first log into facebook. just remember to restore your contacts THEN sync facebook. It should be able to resync all the contacts back to the right place since the locale data is still embedded with each contact.

Change contact type

Hey all..
Have imported contacts from my previous phone. They all now show up as phone contacts. Is there a simple way to change these to google contacts so that they will sync with my gmail contacts?
Only info I could find involved creating contacts as Google contacts, not converting from one type to another.
Anyways, hope theres a solution to this.
Thanks
Craig
there is an app in the market, forgot the name, didn't work anyway. it changed the contacts to type google, but they were not synced with gmail. also on the hero after using this program it causes FC's for the acore process.
here's what i did: synced my hero to outlook, deleted all contacts on the hero, exported the contacts to a .csv, imported that .csv in googlemail and then synced back.

[Q] Backing merged contacts up

Hi everyone.
Is there a way to save the information on which contacts were merged to each other, and simply load it if I change my ROM? Because I have lots of contacts which have accounts on many networks (Google account, Facebook, Skype and so on)
Will a simple export from the Android system save such information?
I just use Google to Backup all my contacts. I go into contacts and make sure they're all listed as Google contacts. That way when I flash a new Rom, then sign into Google they just automatically get loaded back onto the phone. I Believe you can also Export the contacts to the SD Card. Which should make a backup of the contacts on the card. But I have never tried that method.
But will the information about which contacts are merged with which be saved? For instance, if I have derp as a contact on Facebook and Google, merge his accs in my Android phone, then backup, update and load, will both the facebook and google accounts be merged as I resync my contacts?

When you first reload the phone after a flash you sign into Google. It will load all Google contacts. Now when you sign in FB on your phone it will see the contact name, as long as they are the same it will ask if you want to sync/merge them.

Did you solved this problem? It's a big issue for me too
I believe Titanium backup can backup contacts with merging information.

[Q] No Contact Names in Stock Messaging App

Hi,
Since I updated my SGS2 to 4.0.3, I can't see the contact names in the stock messaging app. It seems that there is no sync to my contacts. But, and that's the strange part, not all names are gone. A few of my contacts are shown.
Any advice?
Multiple scenarios....
You saved you're contacts on phone and did not sync with Google. So after upgrading to ics they are wiped.
You didn't signed in to google or sync is not active for contacts
contacts you are seeing are from your Sim, and you didn't signed in to google or didn't synced.
Atifsh you are the greatest!
My contacts weren't synced with google. That wasn't the problem but I suppose it can't hurt. After that I realized that all my contact are neither on my SIM nore on my phone. They existed in the nether ^^. What I did to solve my problem was:
1. Export all my contacts to USB Storage
2. Import all contacts from USB Storage to my phone.
3. Profit
thank you for the hint Atifsh.

[Q] contact app for phone contacts? (non-google contacts?)

hi
Is there a way to create normal phone contacts that are not "google contacts" ?
It seems that in 4.2.2 you always have to have contacts linked to accounts, and therefore either create a google account or exchange email account...
And I also searched some time, but did not find a satisfying application that can backup contacts to excel and reinsert them... why always passing by google or sending it by email?
Is there maybe also an alternative contact application (compared to the standard android one)?
any help would be appreciated
Because syncing it with Google is the easier way including backup.
You can still save contacts on your phone or sim though and export to csv or whatever should be there no?

Go contacts can do this. Use local phone to store contacts only, export to csv format..

Restoring factory settings while keeping contacts?

Hello everyone.
My phone started behaving weird.. it keeps switching to vibrate by itself. I'm not sure yet whats causing this but I searched around and I found that it might be caused be some app. So I'm thinking about restoring factory settings, but I want to keep my contacts intact.
The thing about my contacts is that I spent a lot of time joining people's phone numbers with emails, Facebook accounts.. etc.. I tried to export a backup using Contacts app but it said some info fields might be lost. So I'm wondering if there is a way to keep contacts as s after resetting the device.
Thanks in advance,

Go into Settings > Accounts and make sure all of the ones you have contacts with are synced and if you have some that are just stored on the phone only, make sure to sync to your Google account.
Will this keep Facebook, and other profiles linked to their contacts in the contact app?
Also, I deleted some Facebook contacts from my contacts app. If I synced Facebook app, will this remove the contacts from my Facebook account,? or re-adding them again to the contact app?

When you install the Facebook app back to your phone after factory reset and login. It will ask you to sync your contacts with the Facebook Profiles. In other words. This will link your contacts with the Facebook profiles on your friends list. And no it will not remove the contacts from your Facebook.

But note that when I installed fb app and synced contacts with the fb profiles, most profiles (I believe the ones that had no phone number) were not linked to contacts. I had to use the Join feature in Contacts app to link them one by one. I wouldn't have to do it again, would I?

Yes you would they don't save joined. Most just in case you don't install one of the apps again.
There is no way to do what your looking to do without redoing them.
