Not sure if the Nexus 10's size will work for you? Test drive a cut-out model! - Nexus 10 General

Basically, this involves you making some kind of cut-out with exactly (or as close as possible) the same measurements as the Nexus 10 itself. A decent way of testing out the form-factor of such a device, whenever you can't get access to such a device, or if you want to try it out before purchase.
Materials possibly needed:
- Cardboard (or paper, or whatever you want to construct the decoy tablet with)
- Ruler (at least 1 ft will do fine)
- Marker (or something to mark off measurements before cut-out)
- Scissors (or something sharp)
1. Get your material of choice. I used the bottom of some random cardboard box I had lying around:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. Mark off the height of the device. In the case of the Nexus 10, 177.6mm = 6.992126 inches
3. Mark off the length of the device. In the case of the Nexus 10, 263.9mm = 10.389764 inches
4. Draw some guidelines to make cut-out possibly easier.
5. Cut it out!
6. Next you'll want to get the actual usable area of the screen marked. My math probably failed somewhere, but the screen size at a diagonal-angle is 10 inches. The length of the total tablet at a diagonal angle is 12.5 inches (or at least my model was). 12.5 - 10 = 2.5 inches. I then took 2.5 and divided it by 2 (to get the placement in accordance to both sides) which came to 1.25 inches. Therefore, I put the screen 1.25 inches from the edge of the model. Not 100% sure if my math here was correct though, so if at all in doubt, may just want to measure the points yourself And also, my measurements were a bit sloppy here since 2 sides appear somewhat uneven
7. Draw some guidelines for the usable screen area and add whatever other details you want.
Now try walking around your house or wherever you want with the mock-tablet and see how it fares for you. See if swiping the cut-out feels good or not, see if you can hold it well while laying down on a couch or bed. Test if it will sit on your table, do whatever you would might normally do with the tablet, and just see if it generally works or not.
Not sure if you'd want to go out in public trying such a model though, so you might have to just get a general idea for that Also this would probably just work for... any device you'd want it to, just have to know the measurements for it
I found that I sort of like how the Nexus 10 feels. Could probably use it around the house without too much trouble at all, and even works out nicely while laying down.
As for simulating the weight; the Nexus 10 weighs 603 grams, or 1.32 pounds. Not really sure how you would simulate the weight and keep the form-factor of the cut-out, but I'm sure something creative can be thought up

I drew light bleed and a dead pixel on my cardboard cutout. I need to make a replacement .

You win one internet for this comment. Also some thanks. :good:

You should consider selling that on eBay for $300,000.

Does it have an SD card slot?!
oh and I think it's time to retire that table lol

now for an extra effect glue on a piece of glass and add some weights (glue some thick washers from the hardware store on the back to make it the exact weight of the tablet as well.

Hahaha

To simulate weight you could always tape a ziplock bag full some washers or change to the back. I did a quick calculation and it'd take ~100 quarters, so that's why I suggest just filling a bag with some weight. It might not be the best for getting a form feel, but probably the quickest/easiest way to simulate weight.

For the best effect leave some glue out and have a cushion that pushes the screen up. Oh sorry that's for the Nexus 7 lol.

Cheapest Solution for a Car Mount - $3

I've looking around online for a solution to mount my transformer on my dashboard for the longest time. Dissatisfied with overpriced plastic panels and metallic holders, I set off to find my own mount. I wanted something cheap because I couldnt justify spending 20 to 50 bucks on custom made holders that I probably wouldnt use again if I switched my car. Instead, I decided to order 3M velcro for 3 dollars. Here are the results:

I wont be able to mount it anywhere on the dashboard, as I need nice flat surface for it to stick properly. Im also aware that the transformer has a glossy screen which shows glare under the sun, but if you turn your brightness up, its really easy to see the navigation. In addition, its also great for whoevers sitting in the passenger seat.
Its definitely not the prettiest set up, but it is the cheapest.

lol i had an idea similar to this but after telling my girlfriend about the idea she smacked me on the head and called me nuts...

great idea, I'll test it on my Duster car

velcro on the tablet kills it for me...
...why don't they have those generic silicone skins for this thing?!
this is a great idea and all but...
as about said... velcro... not something i would want to put on my tablet nor my car
Awesome idea i was thinking of something similar using 3M picture frame holders the ones that you stick on then they are supposed to come off with no residue etc never got round to it ended up getting a thingy for the phone for maps and a bag that has a special poket for the tf with lots of padding

So I'm going to use velcro (4 inch by 2 inch strip) instead of the stuff in OP. Should I put the fuzzy side or the scratchy side on the TF? Also this is actual Velcro brand velcro, so the scratchy side is 1mm deep and the puffy side is 4mm deep.

How about just sticking the velcro to a generic Transformer case that's easy to slide in and slide out. That way you can just leave the case there, and take the transformer out whenever you leave your car.
HA! Love it.
That stuff is called Dual Lock by 3M. It's not Velcro or traditional hook and loop. It uses tiny mushroom heads that interlock together creating an amazing bond. They make it with several fasteners per inch variants. 160 250 and 400. And the adhesive back comes in standard and VHB ( very high bond) The 400 versions is almost like glue, in some applications you can't get it to come apart. I love this stuff, I build specialized helmet camera mounts and use the Dual Lock for helmet mounting. Sky divers use my mount with that stuff and it does not come off at terminal velocity.
From the photo it looks like the OP is using standard adhesive 150 or 250, if you used VHB and 400 you could make small 1X1 patches to mount it.
Search for Dual Lock on Ebay.
Curious about my mount?

has anyone tried this.
http://www.tetrax.com/us/
I have one for my iPhone and it is great. It is magnetic. Just a small round disc on the back of my phone and one on the dash.
The TF is much bigger but maybe two of these would hold it.
I dunno if the Tetrax will withstand the TF weight and size. Personally I doubt it, but I may be wrong!
Plus it's quite expensive!
I bought the same type of velcro, but black! Black Shtuff (2 feet X 1 inch) $1.79 (Int. shipping included)

MrNago is right - a single mount won't hold the TF. When I tried it, the weight of the tablet pulled the magnetic claw arm off the magnetic mount on my dashboard (no damage, it just separated the mount arm from the magnet attached to the dash). I don't have dashboard space anywhere in my car (that would be practical to view the TF, anyway) to use 2 mounts, so this is a wash.

Pay for Plastic Back Cover? (Fail: Too Expensive)

I have access to a fabricator and could probably come up with a high-quality plastic back cover. I don't want to waste my time or yours if people aren't interested. Assume somewhere between $50-75 uninstalled and about $15 if you want to send it in and have a done by a h/w engineer (yes, I have access to those too). The more people order the cheaper they would be - the $'s above are based on about 100 people.
Some questions:
1) What color should the back be and why?
2) Should the back have matching metal ornamentation so it looks cool with the dock? This would be more $'s
3) Do you think the majority would DIY or want it done by a tech?
Can't promise anything but I'd certainly look in to it if there's enough demand.
If confirmation occurs, count me in.
if asus don't come up with a fix and it came to this (which i don't think it will) i would definitely want a clear back. would looks so awesome

You actually made me think of something. Maybe the whole back doesn't need to be replaced. Perhaps just a fairly large cut out with a plastic insert. I guess it depends how much clearance there is between the back and the components and where the antennas are located. I don't know how feasible it is to try and cut aluminium but I'll ask.
I'd be in provided it's confirmed that fixes the issue. Clear would be slick, but I'm not picky.
I would definitely be interested in this. You could make an entire market out of this. "Custom Transformer Backs." I'm still interested to see whether ASUS will handle this on their own however. If they don't, I doubt you'll have many customers with Transformer Primes in order to sell them.

But a full back replacement would be better if folks ever have to return prime for future issues? Could just put the old back on before returning
What if you just cut a round circle out of the back of the aluminum where the Asus logo is and install some plastic cover with an Asus logo on it. I think this could be a DIY, type of thing. Seller ships instructions on how to take backplate off, a template of where exactly to cut out and then have a plastic piece to install it. Or make it simple, and and replace the whole back plate.
If you can make it! Please make it right!! I'm willing to pay $75 if you can make it fiberglass (Gray) as bugatti car

to the best of my knowledge, the antennas are just to the left and right of the FRONT-FACING camera. Yes, front-facing. This is how wifi is even able to work.
I don't know where the GPS antenna is located.

bottom right if im not mistaken saw it on the transformer tear down but im just not in for this too risky to do this to my device, great idea hope it works out for you but just not for me unless it was a clear backing and we threw some LEDS on the side like some red ones then we have a clear back the glows red that i would pay like 100 for
I'm in for $75
Demonstrate that plastic improves receptivity, make it clear, emboss it with XDA so it's a collector's item (like my 2 OG Droids), and I'm in.
Get Samsung to sell it, and I'll give you $100. ;-)
I was thinking like a flat black, but a clear back would look pretty sweet too. Once a Guinea pig or two tried it out, posted pics & real world experience, I might be game

For me too.
Looks like it just snaps in a groove near the edge.I think it would have to come off and can't be folded around to the back like a case cover. With the rounded back folding it around would not work well anyway.Works for me however since I only need it when putting the tablet away.I bet it comes with the tablet and does not have to be bought separately so that will be good too. jmo

They leave the camera unprotected because when your using the tablet you will have the cover folded back... The most common time for you to use the camera is when you are using the tablet... Therefore they must leave it uncovered to take pictures while using the tablet

The big question is if the case will act as a stand for viewing. I like that it's minimalism but realistically the only thing I care about in a case is if it props it up for viewing.

Looking at the gap in the middle, it would allow you to take pictures when it is folded back. I don't see why it wouldn't fold that way.

Agreed. I have $450 credit just waiting to buy this at Amazon. I tried asking them about it and their customer support was so clueless they didn't even know how to ask.

Just a Simple Stand (I just bought one)

Not a dock, or a charger, just a cheap little stand for the desk or the table to prop the N3 up hands free.
Why can I find one? What are you guys using?
My favourite hobby always is to build them with whatever I find on my desk with sticky tape... (I know that's not much help).
There's a great thread on here (which I can't find at the moment, it would have been on the HD2 threads two years ago), about how a few small cuts to a credit card make a great portable stand.

^^^ that. Its pretty nifty. Wish there was a heavier duty version in plastic or metal though. And wish the arms folded out closer so it will hold my note3 in portrait mode. Only works in landscape. I use a straw or flat chopstick to hold in portrait.

Standard business card holder. Holds the phone in landscape perfectly and you can still connect the power and stereo cords.

It looks like you could put a Qi charger on that, or maybe fasten it to the back of the mesh, then you'd have a wireless charging stand.
I think I'll go get one of those tomorrow to test with my LG WCP-300. If I don't forget overnight, that is!

ProCase SlimSnug Case

Thought I'd start up a dedicated thread for this case.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MJXK8VM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
At an average of under $10 on Amazon, this case is a quarter of the cost of the official case. It adds the protection of a hard cradle that the tablet sits in, which the official case doesn't offer.
Based on the popularity of the case on Amazon, I'd suggest NVidia may lose some sales of the official case to ProCase.
One thing to consider is that this case might interfere with passive cooling as suggested in https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/767648/shield-tablet/3rd-party-case-/
For that price, I'll drill vent holes in it if necessary. ?
In going to take the risk and have ordered one.
Looks nice, I have a similar case for my Nexus 7 but I don't want the back all covered up. I'm still holding out for a cover that snaps into the bottom of the tablet (like the official cover).
I kinda wish there was a really snug bumper for it with a lip that would cover the harsh bezel edges with rubbery comfort.

Yeah, they really are rather sharp. Not quite sure why they decided to go that way with the design.
I ordered one of these and it just shipped today. I probably won't get it until late next week (US holiday on Monday) but I can take pics and give some basic impressions when I get it if any is interested.

Right, it's winging its way over to me with the shield controller. Should have them in about 3 or 5 days.
Mine arrived yesterday; I got the green one. I very much like the protection provided by the snap-on case and the magnetic cover "latches" nicely in the closed position. Opening the cover does wake the tablet which is also nice.
The cover folds back but does not seem to magnetically "latch" to itself or the rear of the case in either the "keyboard" mode, the "movie" mode, or folded flat against the back of the case. The "keyboard" mode works easily enough as the weight of the tablet holds it in position but the "movie" mode doesn't work well for me but perhaps the cover joints will loosen up a bit and work better over time.
I find the protection aspect (and price) of this cover to be far superior to the nVidia case but the nVidia case works far, far, better as a stand than this one does, at least mine.
<edit> Please see additional comments and retraction in the next post. </edit>
I retract my previous statement regarding the cover not magnetically latching to itself in the "movie" stand mode. There is a magnetic clasp there but you have to fold the cover into the proper geometrical arrangement which I clearly had not been doing. When done properly, the cover does indeed snap to itself quite nicely and the tablet stands up properly for viewing a movie.
This is an excellent case and priced, in my opinion, lower than it is worth. :good:
Well I ordered the red one off of amazon, should be getting it tomorrow along with my 64GB Samsung SD card. Hopefully will have my shield next week, have to wait for Best Buy to ship it.
Update: I received my case, and I have to say I was actually impressed with the quality of the case. Much better than I was expecting. My Shield shipped already so I should have it soon.
Just got mine. Nice case.

@aznmode, yeah just got mine. Same colour as yours. It's performing great for me. I just wish the magnetic clasp was able to grab onto something more secure when it is in "stand mode". I find the magnet sometimes pops loose for me. It's trivial to reaffix it again, so for the price I'm certainly willing to turn a blind eye to this behavior.
With the Procase, do any of you guys notice the shield getting hotter than usual?

I played HL2 last night and it got as hot as it did when I didnt have a case. There aren't really any vents on the tablet that it covers, so I don't see how it could affect it. If anything it should act as a heat sync and help with the heat.

Ok Thanks for the quick reply. I'm debating if I should order this case as well as the controller or order the official cover

I played Sky Force 2014 (not Tegra enhanced, but pretty graphically rich for a shmup) and immediately after ending my 2 hour session of almost non-stop gaming, I opened System Monitor (app) and my temp was 40 deg Celsius. My Nexus 7 was climbing up to about 60 deg Celsius on the same game.
How is it when you have the covert folded back but flat against the back of the shield? does it lay completely flat? Can someone post a picture if they have it please.

It lays practically flat, with just the smallest amount of rake down from the cover fabric hinge to the metal clasp.
Hope it helps.
Thanks @jaredmorgs!!! I was waiting for someone to show a pic before I order it.
