[Q] Battery life while listening to music? - HTC Droid DNA

I looked at the other topics but couldn't find this answer. If it has been posted, please shoot me a link.
I listen to music on my phone all day, about 6-8 hours. All from the phone, no streaming, no WiFi, no LTE. I had the original Dinc, and its battery was terrible. I got 3ish hours of music before it died. I bought the iPhone 4s because it got great battery life while listening to music.
Has anyone tested the DNA while listening to music? I really want this phone, but if I can't go 8ish hours while listening to music, I'll have to get the Note 2.
Thanks guys, love this forum!

I used Google cloud today for about 5 hours, Went to work at 6:00am and I just plugged the phone with 25% of battery. Not sure if I helped you...

Well if you got that battery life from streaming music, I can only assume that it would be better playing music from the phone itself. I am about 95% sure I'm about to get this phone.

So how bad _is_ the battery problem

I have been dying to get this phone for weeks, but every review I see posted has bad news about the battery. I'd really love to hear some real world numbers to see if this phone could work for me. I really need to get through 'til late evening, and I need to be able to make 1.5-2 hrs of voice calls per day. Am I dreaming?
What is your experience?
Thanks for responding - I really appreciate your input!
My first real day with my Amaze
Woke up at 6 am EST. Went to the in-laws and usewd my phone to check traffic to ATL Hartsfield. Checked a few more times while texting and checking a few notifications. Get on plane. Airplane mode. Play some angry birds and teeter. try to figure out what all these widget things are all about since I am new to Android. Get to Chicago. Walk about 4 miles through the city snapin pics (see amazing photos thread) Stopped and ate at a resturant. More facebook, text email. Back to where we are staying and it just turned yellow. Not too bad if you ask me considering it was only yellow and I have juice defender for 25% or lower. I could have gone couple hours longer normal use.

cool - what time was it when you got back, and how long were you i nairplane mode?
very simply put, this phone is great... buy it. I had the sensation and i truly think its better on ALL aspects, including battery life, unless you NEED, absolutely cant live without wifi calling, i'd say its a great investment.
switching to 2G so far has saved a ton of battery... I'll see how tomorrow goes.

I noticed in your other thread that you were getting 19 hours - what is your usage pattern like? Also, why is wifi calling an issue - I thought that this had it. Not a deal breaker, but I'd love it for calling home when I'm overseas.
Simply put, from 100 - 0% battery...I haven't hit 7 hours yet (4.5-6.8 hours). That's on moderate-heavy use.
I've now gone through three cycles and will begin to use the device "normally" this coming week. Let's just say I'll be hanging onto my blackberry bold 9780 for travels or times when I know i wont be near a charger for a day. This is one of those - plug in at the office - kind of phones. haha.
Turning off 4g would help, as well as GPS.
I expect once I go back to my Android ways (I've been spoiled by BlackBerry battery life) I can push past 12 hours on this phone.

Hour and a half plane ride.... Got back close to 4 probably.
no major testing but i charged both of my devices to 100% Evo and Amaze. took them off the charger at 1am didn't touch them until 7 am and the Evo went down to 75% and the Amaze 73%. the Evo is rooted ad the Amaze is of course stock.
I have 3 gmail accounts on automatic sync as well as an exchange account set to push delivery. also a news and Facebook widget set to sync every hour.
Yesterday I watched my battery life carefully. I went 8+40 before the first battery warning at 29%. It went an hour and 10 minutes more to yellow at 19%. Then finally turned red after a total of 13+10. I would characterize my usage as light. I listened to an .mp3 while getting ready, did a little messaging. got maybe 20 emails during the day. Had a few short phone calls. Responded to an email from work. Downloaded and installed an app from thre Market. Watched a few short Youtube videos, etc. I have four email accounts, three of which push to the phone. Since I might need to respond to an emergency from the office, I can't see normally letting my phone go below 30%, so that means I have about 8 and a half hours of light use. I was really hoping for more.
As soon as we get root we will have wifi calling. That's if we don't get an OTA with that sooner.
Mine gets horrible battery life when I use it. But when it is on standby its almost crazy how little it actually seems to use.

Lol. That's about right.
For those of you having terrible battery life I suggest going to the market and downloading juice defender and juice plotter. I took my phone off the charger today around 6:15 am and it’s now 1:05am and I still have 26% battery remaining. That is with moderate use and a short 15 minute charge through a computer usb. I took about 8 calls averaging 5 minutes a call, one was 7, watched two YouTube videos, sent 11 text messages, played a game for about 5 minutes wasting time, checked a couple of my posts on xda 3 or 4 times, as well as using the weather app frequently (I’m in Florida and we've been getting hammered with rain!) O... and most of the things that required connectivity my phone was connected to Wi-Fi. With the correct profiles and settings enabled it should increase battery life considerably, and if you have root, even more so!! Been using it with my old g2 and myt4g, and now Amaze!!

How is the battery life?

So for anyone who has one, had is the battery life? How many hours of use? Thanks
Bob

well i guess you guys will know on 11/11/11 at 11:11AM.
sucks about the non-removable battery...
at least there's still the possibility of some sort of external battery device that'll connect to it's USB port.
my 2c
Mine is on its third charge, and its still getting better
charge overnight via AC,
unplug at 8am for a full workday
2 push email accounts with up to 100 emails a day (1 gmail, 1 exchange)
whatsapp messages all day
bluetooth on in the car for 2 hours a day
bit of browsing and RSS reading thru the day
10 minutes of calls
end of work day ~ 40%.
get to 20% at about 10pm
so enough to get thru a work day, if you need to go out at night, get a car charger or similar.

Very good and detailed information. Thanks!
if the battery goes that quickly with such minimal use, i'd be screwed big time. with my current setup(thunderbolt - no razr here till Friday) I have a 4500mAh extended battery + a 5000mAh external power pack(9500mAh total) I easily blow through that in less then a day.
I am a heavy data user though. constant HQ audio streaming, downloading, video streaming, etc. around 30GB/month on a slow month.

hahaha, you do sound like a real heavy user, I dont have time to stream anything as I'm replying to the 100 push emails in an average work day!
Ps. My screen on time would be higher than most due to the typing.
I'm an average user, don't stream much at all. Granted, it's only the first day, but I charged this baby up and have been using it nonstop for email, web, and text for close to 5 hours and I'm at 50%. Played a couple of short videos as well.
As I said, it's the first charge so I assume the life will get better over the next couple of days. But so far so good.
To the guy who burns through nearly 10,000 MaH a day, there's no reason in the world you should get a phone without a removable battery!!!!

2 days with it now, getting better day after day... Smart Actions really a big add to the battery life.. On the first day, with out smart actions, It was over for 22 hours with good usage of internet/calls/display/music streaming from motocast etc..
And the next day, I have done some settings on smart actions, already 25 hours over, I still have 30% left though the same way I have used it on the first day... So, Thumbs-up Guys.... I expect it for another 4-5 hours as such we get it for 30 hours... That is better than any phone right now in the markret.. Smart Actions is the magic...
horrible battery life
I might be taking mine back. I've had it off the charger since 8:30AM, it is now 1:30 and the battery is at 30%. This is very unacceptable to me, especially since I really haven't done anything on it today. I really like the phone, but I can't have it charging all day.

You are, I'm assuming?
I've been off the charger for 4 hours and 15 minutes, and I'm at 70%, with moderate use and no smart actions, with a mix of 4G, 3G, and Wifi (it switcehs between 4G and 3G a lot). I'm satisfied with those numbers, especially considering I'm upgrading from an Incredible.
I'd give it an understandable amount of battery life credit. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. This is compared to my sgs2.

Best screen on time on LTE?

On my Nexus, I get the following screen times:
2100mah battery : 2 hours
3800mah : 3 hours (still breaking it in, might be defective?)
I also had a Razr Maxx on which I got ~4 hours.
I am hoping the Rezound can reach 4-5 hours with the extended battery on LTE. What are you guys getting?

It really depends what you are doing during this "screen on" time. If you are playing fairly complicated CPU/GPU intensive task, you will likely not ever see better than the Razr Maxx got. However, I don't see how your time on the GNex could be so low with a 3800mah battery. I've been using my Rezound mostly for texting, email, and checking up on news and feeds, as well as google music, it haven't had any trouble hitting the 4hr mark, been up to 5 but that was sporadic and kind of all over the place usage. Meaning that I might do something that is battery consuming but not for very long...

wait are those the times before your phone dies? if soo id say you must live in a bad signal area because the razr maxx should go for well over a day with medium to heavy usage.

I mostly send texts with google voice, read feeds on reader, use instagram & fb. I use about 300-500MB of data a day.

That's the amound of time the screen was on. I am a pretty heavy user, always on my phone.
The screen uses the same amount of power whether LTE is on or not. LTE uses more power than 3G, but both are tiny consumers compared with the screen. I get between 3.5-4 hours of "screen on" time in one charge, regardless of what else I do. If I use LTE instead of 3G, the phone dies a little faster, but I still average between 3.5 - 4 hours of screen time a day on one charge.

Thanks for the input.
I haven't found that to be the case on my GNex. I can easily get 3-4 hours of screen time on wifi, but with LTE I'm only getting 2-2.5.
there's no question regardless if im on wifi, 4g or 3g the rezound sucks up some serious battery life when the lcd is on. if you want good battery life you basically have to not use your device.
This Anandtech review does reflect that.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5533/motorola-droid-razr-maxx-review-18x-the-battery/2
On 4G and 3G, the Rezound gets about 5 hours of browsing.
The Razr Maxx gets 5 hours on LTE, and 8 on 3G. Nexus 3.8/5.7.
This is good. The Rezound with the extended battery must be a beast.

if that's true about the razr maxx with a 3300mah battery that's not good at all.
I find the biggest battery killer BY FAR is audio streaming.
I listen to either iheart radio or Sirius online all day at work.
With the extended battery I can go like two days unless I stream audio. When I am listening to iheart or Sirius I get around eight hours and the battery is totally dead.

Maybe its the app you're using? I use Google Play Music and stream music every day on my 7 mile bike and bus ride to and from work and don't notice any significant battery drain. Often it takes me about an hour each direction and the battery drains maybe 3-4% during that time.

It's not like there is any choice. I use the iheart app and the sirius/XM app.
Everybody who has used these apps has said the same thing about battery drain.

Sure, that may be the case... I'm just pointing out that in my experience, its not the streaming itself that causes the drain, but mostly something about the app itself that you're using to do the streaming. When I stream music using Google's app and Google's Music service, it seems the battery holds out just fine.
When I had Words With Friends installed on my phone, it dropped my battery life significantly. Why? I have no idea, cause I know I only opened that stupid app maybe once a day for 2 minutes. Maybe its just be a poorly written app? Who knows...
Anyways, you yourself just said that you've noticed everybody who uses these apps complains about battery life, which is exactly what I was indicating with my last post.

I get 2 hours on the 1620mah battery. I bought an extended battery which is 2750 mah which is about 70% more so that should yield 3.5-4 hours of screen on time.

Battery life on Music player

So im going on holiday soon and just want a rough idea on how long to expect from the battery with just listening to music in plane mode.
Im currently using xlite v1.3 ROM so my battery use day to day is awesome i get on avg 15 hours use and have 70%+ remaining(bout 40 mins music listening in car, web browsing, calls, texting and maybe 15 mins playing snake), also do headphones make a massive impact on the battery life? Headphones i will be using re either Audio Tecnica ATH M50 or Shure SRH 840 (the Shures are mine and the M50s a friends).
Would really appreciate if someone could roughly tell me as i have a 11.5 hour flight then a 5 hour waiting time and then a second flight of 5.5 hours...
Regards Matt
buy a second battery then you have no worries
I get well over a full day when listening to music (and taking a few photos etc) through headphones. Can't comment on using loudspeaker though.
I use Poweramp and am on Omega v11 so would expect similar battery life to you.

I agree. I'd try that. plus look to see part of the phone is draining the power (system, apps etc.) My battery lasts all day, unless i use it a lot. But I noticed when i flashed a new rom on it, it was like a brand new battery. Standby lasted for days, Not a day..
Mine's good
my battery lasts all day when i don't play games for long periods of times.
Better than my battery. Mine dies within a matter of 3-4 hours. Phone idle is my only culprit when looking in the battery usage. I've never figured it out, just kind of dealt with it for the moment. My phone does get really hot a lot. Norm running 112F. Anyways, I had one of my volume buttons sticking.. The internal button, not the pushing one.. and I assume that is what caused it to overheat. I dunno. Hope my ranting helped at least brainstorm your situation.
Wait, did you fix it? I have the same problem, and I notice the top volume button on mine is a bit thinner than the bottom one (although my cameras aren't working either), was this really the culprit for you?
