Hi guys,
I'm really new to this, so please excuse me asking basic stuff.
I am an iPhone user and I am familiar with linux and flashing of a huge number of different devices (Nokia, Xbox360, Xbox, Siemens, PSX...). I am living in the US, but my girlfriend lives in Germany. What I did is, I got her a AT&T locked HTC Aria for x-mas. I am aware of the difference between rooting and unlocking, but still I have some basic questions:
1. Do I unlock the device before or after I root? Does it make a difference at all?
2. As the phone is meant to be used in Germany, which (as unbranded as possible) image should I use? Can I use liberated R012/FR006 or doesn't this work in Europe? Could I use the Gratia Image?
2a.) Shall I go for FroYo or rather stick with Eclair?
3. Does the change/upgrade/renew of the image affect the unlock in any way?
4. Can I unlock the phone with an app or similar, when the device is rooted or do I have to pay for the unlock code?

I unlocked first with HTCSimUnlock.com - had to pay the extended search fee.

I used liberated_aria_R012, then the "update": la_www_update_R002_signed referenced in the first post in his thread. However I can't get Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware social networking stuff like facebook, ppok, etc., as others recommend. I also couldn't remove them using the complicated "SDK" method as the "ADB" can't find the phone. I don't know whether this is anything to do with the version of the ROM (I know there are more recent versions), but I got fed up after 6 hours trying, so now my wife (it's her phone) just has to live with the clutter

The version I have is Eclair - works fine, not noticeably faster or slower than the stock ROM.

Don't think so - not for me anyway, I have used many network SIM cards in the UK, US, Poland, Macedonia, Qatar, UAE, Italy (haven't been to Germany recently, sorry!)

I think I know how you feel. Even after a few years of familiarity with custom ROMs for Windows Mobile phones, this business of android "rooting", "ADB-ing", etc. and commands that look like Unix, it all sounds a a bit intimidating, especially since the "flash menu" entries aren't quite as the guides say in respect of the USB connection, bot following this thread about "unrevoked" is the way I went.

I don't think the rom you use will really matter, so I'd recomnd (if you don't mind running on the experimental side) the cm6.1 roms.
For unlocking, just call att and tell them you want to use it for international travel. They'll give you the code for free. I did this with my old blackberry 9000, took a few weeks, but it was basically 0 hassle. My experience was with an off contract phone, but I understand it works with on contract phones as well, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but theres no harm in trying.

i would suggest to wait for gratia in europe (i think it should be released in some days)
i use a aria in austria (ordered a week before htc pronounced that gratia will come to europe ) - works fine but only edge not hsdpa is working for data connection (due to differenze frequences in us & europe)

I get HSPDA with my wife's AT&T Aria, in all the European countries & Middle Eastern I visited and except rarely when in the UK and she doesn't get an Orange signal (her carrier), and it switches to T-Mobile's GPRS. Not sure if Austria's different, or may be the APN settings are working, but in my experience HSPDA is possible with the Aria phone hardware.

I tried that but they refused as I wasn't the original AT&T owner (got it from eBay). Maybe you'll be luckier.
There's a helpful looking video on youtube by the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjgg__m-KHc. Although it doesn't look like an AT&T phone, it seems to cover all the steps.

Like it says in the Aria specs you've quoted above: "HSDPA". When I'm roaming in Europe & UAE, etc. I get an "H" and a fast connection if I turn the data on in most cities/countries. In other places sometimes "3G". I don't know what frequency Austria uses for it's networks (Due to be back in Salzburg after x-mas so will try it next month.), but I do know that in the past when I've only had a "G" or "E", it has been if I had the wrong APN settings. e.g. with O2, if you pick the "MMS" or "Wap" APN instead of the o2web, and similar for T-Mobile

First of all, I want to thank you for all of your advices. I have not been around for the last days, so I couldn't reply earlier. I read your answers and they were really helpful to me!
As I mentioned before, I am a total newbie when it comes to Android OS or HTC handsets. The HTC homepage and many other forums say, that the aria won't operate on the European UMTS standard. Is this due to a hardware limitation or might this be fixed by using a different rom (like the one of the gratia)?
If this won't be working, is it possible to use skype on mobile with Edge?

I would also like to know how you got HSDPA to work in europe. I have a AT&T Aria wich I'm trying to get to work with 3G/HSDPA in Sweden. It's unlocked through the same site you used and has the "liberated_aria_R012" rom with the "la_www_update_R002_signed" update. I have tested several different APN settings but I'm still stuck with Edge. I've read that the Aria's hardware doesn't support the 2100/900MHz band but your experiences says otherwise. Please bring some light to this problem
Any updates on that? I really would like to operate the phone in europe using full 3G speed!
Maybe it's possible to reflash the radio image?

The AT&T branded Aria does not support the 900/2100MHz bands for UTMS. Only 850/1900, so you probably won't be able to get 3G. Flashing a new radio will not work because the frequencies are in the hardware, not controlled by software.

I just reread Dopsi's replies and he said he only gets EDGE, not HSPA despite all of the different settings he has tried.

Hello guys,
actually there are two types of HTC Aria:
HTC Gratia (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100
HTC Aria A6380 (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100
HTC Aria A6366 (HTC Liberty):
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900
So you want to use HTC Gratia or Aria A6380 in Europe and I guess AT&T is selling Aria A6366.
Btw, you can find all 3 of them in the Device Database of this site.
I am not sure where you can verify which version you have. If you figure it out please let me know...

Hey may actually have the Aria sold in Asia, which is compatible with euro HSDPA.

my Aria from ATT via Amazon shows Model number "HTC Gratia A6380" from Settings>About Phone>Phone Identity. It was shipped in Aug. Thought this was interesting based on the list of available models.

Interesting indeed. HTC didn't even announce the Gratia until October 2010. So does your Aria have the AT&T logo on it?

i have one short question.
I'm currently living in the US for the next few months and my HTC Desire keeps on rebooting and HTC won't repair it in the US, because it's an german vodafone branded version.
Anyways, i need a new phone.
If I buy the SGSII here in the US, will I be able to use it in Germany aswell?
Because currently I cannot use 3G with my Desire (carrier is t-mobile), only EDGE. It would be a real bummer if I couldn't use the SGSII to it's full extend (meaning 3G etc.) in Germany.

Th unlocked Europe version is compatible with both Europe and US 3g radios.

That's what I meant... Plus there are a stores in the US that will sell it.
gs2 unlocked version is quadband 3g 850, 900, 1900, 2100mhz. i'm assuming german is 900mhz. so you can use 3g in anywhere except tmobile usa (1700mhz).
My family will be taking a trip to Costa Rica this coming February. You can buy a prepaid SIM card from Kölbi (ICE) at the airport. I've done a little research and it appears that an unlocked phone should work for both voice and 3G data so long as the phone supports Costa Rica's bands, 1800 on GSM and 850 on UMTS.
I've come across an inexpensive Android phones, the Pantech Crossover, that seem to fit the bill. Do you guys think that this phone will work? Other than requesting 3G data and setting the APN, is there anything else I need to do to get 3G data to work?

Yes it should work but make sure that the phone is SIM unlocked first before you leave on your trip. Then once you get the SIM card put it in the phone and activate it, making sure to request 3g data and setting the APN properly. If you do these things you should be all set.

Google maps should work just fine, unfortunately Costa Rica isn't know for having blazing fast mobile data speeds so finding the map routes might take a while to load. That being said yes it can create directions based on address or others points of interest. Overall, it should work fine you just might have to be a little patient with waiting for map directions.

The LG Thrive P506 Black 3G Unlocked Cell Phone should fit the bill for you. Its only $105 and has the required wireless bands, is unlocked, and should be more then enough for a cheap phone to be used for getting some gps directions, making a couple calls, or looking up some points of interest.

shimp208, thanks for the suggestion. Since I've got some time before the trip, I'm weighing my options. Currently I'm considering the following:
A used AT&T phone (assuming that I can unlock it) off eBay - under $100
A new unlocked Pantech Crossover - under $70
A new unlocked LG Thrive from NewEgg - $105
A Zopo ZP500 cheap Chinese Android phone, but appears to work on AT&T's frequencies - $170
The reason why I'm sticking the ZP500 into the mix is that it's specs are better than the low end Android phones that I'm also considering. Does anybody have any experience with this phone? Does it do 3G on AT&T's 850Mhz band?

BTW, I posted a question on the TripAdvisor forum for Costa Rica regarding buying a prepaid sim card when I get in country and somebody suggested that I acquire the sim card through costaricacellularconnection before I go and activate the sim/phone when I get in country. Has anybody used this service?

While I haven't used it personally it seems to have good reviews with people being really happy with the performance you get for the price. And to answer your question about 3G on the 850Mhz band yes that should work.

Unfortunately the Phoenix arrived and had a busted microSD slot as it would not recognize any of my cards. So I wound up getting a new Pantech Burst. Worked out in my favor as the Burst seems to be (at least on paper) a significantly more powerful device (1.5Ghz dual core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB RAM, & 16GB flash).

Yes that is a much more powerful device compared to the Phoenix dual 1.2 Ghz (From what I read) vs 800 mhz and 1 GB vs 512 RAM, plus bigger and better screen is the better choice.

I ordered a ZOPO ZP500+. I've read it is identical to the ZP500 with the exception that the single core MTK6575 CPU was swapped out with the pin-for-pin-compatible dual core MTK6577. In addition to the dual SIM functionality, I like the fact it is dual core and a quad band where both 2G and 3G should work in Asia, Europe, and North America.
It purports to have 850MHz 3G, and I have read of an Australian user using this phone's 3G with 850MHz and also a Canadian with 3G at 850MHz. It reads to be reasonably popular amongst Russian users. Can't say I know the specifics of AT&T's 850 MHz implementation so I can't comment.
I anticipate delivery of the phone in a week's time, when I am keen to get a good look at it then.

What specifically are you trying to figure out about AT&T's 850 MHz implementation? Here is a map of where AT&T has 850 MHz 3G coverage in the U.S, if you follow the link and scroll up there should also be a map of AT&T's 1900 MHz spectrum coverage.

Those are great maps of AT&T's 850MHz (and 1900 MHz coverage).
I'm not looking for AT&T coverage myself, but rather interested in coverage in Canada (specifically Saskatchewan and also Ontario). I only mentioned AT&T in this thread because of this post in the thread:

Again, AT&T is not of interest to me.

If your looking to get coverage in those Canadian areas I would use the website you looked at to find out which carriers have 3G 850 MHz coverage in the areas you want. Then once you know what carriers have coverage in the areas you want, I'd go out and buy a prepaid SIM from among the the carrier that offers the coverage your looking for and then go with whatever carrier has the best value for the money in terms of data usage, etc. and use that.

Let us know how the Zopo works out. I'm interested in knowing how well these Chinese MTK6575/6577 phones work. Had I not gotten a great deal on a new Burst on eBay I would have really been considering one of these. An interesting development (at least in the GSM space) is that the Nexus 4 is within $100 US of most of the currently available Chinese dual core phones. That will put a real price squeeze on the next gen quad core phones...

Sure will, to me unless your really on a tight budget it seems like a no brainer to invest the extra $100 or so for not only significantly more powerful hardware but also a lot better community support due to the very open nature of nexus devices.

Maybe it's just my games talking, but the Xperia Play is pretty cheap unlocked now.
I am currently on vacation in the United Arab Emirates, and I would like to purchase the One X+ here. I live in the US and have service with AT&T. All the stores that I talk to here say that the version of the phone they carry has built-in LTE. According to wiki, however, it seems like only the at&t model has an LTE radio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_X).
Do these stores know what they're talking about? They have working phone display models, but there isn't an LTE network in place here yet for me to verify whether the phone has it or not. Any other ways that I can check?

Nope, there isn't. I live in the UK and the only LTE version of anything remotely similar to a One X+ LTE version is the One XL, it's the International version of the One X in America. There is no One X+ XL or anything. Besides, LTE is really not all that. HSDPA+ is good enough for me.

According to wiki, however, it seems like only the at&t model has an LTE radio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_X).
Do these stores know what they're talking about? They have working phone display models, but there isn't an LTE network in place here yet for me to verify whether the phone has it or not. Any other ways that I can check?

Lol, sounds like they want to just sell u a phone. If you're going to be gone for awhile then wait til u get home and maybe the new HTC M7 device will be out and maybe with tegra 4. No, USA and Telus version phones are only with LTE built in.
I really want to get my hands on an HDX. I could get one from amazon Germany - but they say that LTE functionality in Switzerland is not available at the moment.
Now I am wondering whether it is a Hardware or software issue?
In Switzerland we use the 800, 1800 and 2600MHz bands.
Can anyone help or has anyone actually bought a device in one country and successfully used LTE in another?
