Hi, I'm really new at this where it comes to my Prime.
It's just I'm wondering what's the main Reason to root My Prime, and what benefits would I get when My Prime is Rooted ?

-backup all your apps +user data
-block all ads
-being able to edit all files in /system which is needed for mods.
And many more things, there was a thread around like that last week i think you could look for that
Up to now - since we can't have custom roms - my reason is simply to be able to use switchme.
This makes the prime a multi user device.
And since the busybox installed along su seems to break the Asus backup tool I am happy to have titanium backup.
Those are my major reason to Root.
Other than that : its my toy and i wanna have full access regardless if needed or not. :-D

But why not? There is no harm in rooting the device, you get nothing but positive if you do it, plus it's not a difficult task. I just don't see why you wouldn't do it. There are a number of apps that require root access, and without it, you're out of luck.

I haven't come across anything I need root for on my prime so far. My Galaxy S I9000M is rooted and running Cyanogenmod9 so I'm no stranger, just have yet to find a real need for it on the prime.

It's an easy task, but I haven't really wanted an app/feature bad enough on the Prime to want to root. And quite honestly, I don't have a permanent attachment to the Prime to want to get the *most* out of it. With a locked bootloader, constant updates from ASUS, multiple hardware issues that may be addressed and limited developer support for ICS in general, I don't quite have that 'going concern' nor do I get a feeling of accomplishment in rooting it.

-custom roms
-ATP tweaks to add new modules/drivers that doesn't come with prime stock

What app do you use?
Touchscreen tune. I can now take notes with a stylus in my classes. I could before using this app but its a night and day difference

More customization and safety/security options.
Titanium Backup and Adfree were the first to get installed.
Root Browser/ES File Explorer are levels above the Asus File Manager
File sharing over WiFi via a number of root-only apps as well
Ad blocking would be my main reason. That and being able to shell into the device to mess around.

I mostly rooted to allow me to backup apps etc. properly and restore apps with data from another device using Titanium. When there are stable ROMS available that add value I may well be tempted to play.
CIFS support: Ability to mount a shared directory from a Windows, Linux, or Mac network on the Prime as if it were located on the prime itself...I can open 10 terrabytes worth of movies, tv shows, comics and music from my home server, directly from their respective apps, on the prime without touching ES or any other file explorer type app. Heck, my installs of BS Player and PerfectViewer all default to a directory that isn't even on the Prime!
App backup, better user data backup, and perhaps overclocking all seem like good reasons to me as well.
And let's not confuse root with the ability to load a custom ROM...you can do all the above on an Asus ROM using a reversible root process...while root is also a necessity for loading a custom ROM, it does not by itself enable that capability...the boot loader unlock tool that is also necessary to allow custom ROMs to be loaded on the Prime breaks warranty and there's no work-around I know of. Root != custom rom.

This right here would be my main reason for root, if I root. So far, I haven't come across anything I couldn't do with the Prime in a stock state. ES File Explorer lets me get at my windows shares, and I haven't really needed direct access like CIFS would provide.
Then again, I generally don't watch movies/tv or listen to music on my Prime.

You can acomplished the above using ES File Explorer or BS Player no Root required. I know it works because I did it before I rooted mine.

My girlfriend has a Samsung Galaxy S II that has been acting a bit weird recently. Battery life has become extremely short, and she discovered hundreds of files all with names beginning with "tracker-c6446d57267343". Most mysterious of all is that something is somehow using the GPS even though it has been deactivated in the settings.
I'm suspecting her phone is infected with malware, and I'm planning to do a full wipe next time we meet. She's downloading AVG from Google Play right now to run a scan, but I'm going to do a full wipe anyway just to be sure and because she wants to have a clean start anyway.
I'm mostly curious if anyone has encountered this before. Is it malware? If so, how harmful is it? Keylogger, possibly?

dont waste your time with AVG. just wipe the phone. and tell her not to install a bunch of stupid apps.

Exactly. It is. Odds are someone installed an app on yer girlfriends phone to be able to track her, tape pictures with the camera remotely, steal her credit card info, use the mic to record what's going on , etc. All of this can be achieved with ONE app and allows the person who installed it to remotely access the device. Also the app hides itself from detection in the app drawer and in the app manager . The legal reasons to install it are for if u lose your phone. But if someone got a hold of her phone they could easily have put this on and set it up within minutes. In other words. Someone can hear and see everything she's been doing.

I'm finding it highly unlikely that any of her friends would do something like that, not to mention that none of them have the technical know-how (yes, I know it's not hard, but none of her friends are even technologically adept to pull something like this off) to do it. If such malware has been installed on her phone, it most likely came bundled with some app she downloaded. She doesn't get all her app downloads from Google Play.

There is no such thing as malware on android. everything you install tells you what it has access to.
The only thing like malware, would be an application that records stuff and sends it out, which would be listed when she installed the app, Tho im sure most rarely pay attention to that screen other than hitting install.
There are no viruses, no malware, or anything "hidden" that can attack stuff without your permission.
Wipe the phone. Dont install pirated apps or stupid pointless apps.

Malware can definitely affect android. Sure there are safeguards built in to reduce the chances of it happening, but they rely on the user to enforce them. I can almost guarantee that a majority of android users don't look at what permissions an app is asking for prior to installation. I know for a fact that out of the 5 android users in my house I am the only one that checks permissions before I install anything. In addition, even if one is checking the permissions, a malicious app can easily disguise itself as an everyday app that requires the permissions the Malware needs but would be overlooked because the host app has a valid reason for needing those permissions.
A dialer, email, sms, social networking app will all ask for access to your contacts. And it's necessary for that app to do its job. Well if that same app has unlimited access to your network then it can now take your contacts and upload them.
Now a virus is another thing all together. While it's possible on a rooted phone with rw permissions in the system directory, it's unlikely since most apps exist in a "sandbox" so to speak. It wouldn't be that difficult for a root explorer app to gain access to your /system directory and wreak havoc and then target your sdcard and wipe out your data. But not before uploading whatever it wants (a lot of explorers require network permissions for cloud service, etc). But then I guess that would be classified as malware and not a virus
And lets not leave out all the apps that use social networks to login..
But the last two Lines of your post say it all. Stay away from pirated apps and watch what 3rd party apps you're trusting these permissions with.
So I now have a Samusng S2 LTE, and sold the Nexus 4, what an upgrade ! yah (removable batteries needed on sailing trips, an a tough to break phone, USB OTG and can bring files i need on SD cards..
Anyways so I rooted and installed CW10 - and it seems that they have now jumped the shark in a mainstream attempt so the most important feature is gone, set permissions...
Coming from a blackberry I can hardly imagine why some stupid app I have to delete has permission to use my phone for things that are none of their junk, like my SMS and phone calls, even my phone number, MY LOCATION...
Can't wait for this new Firefox OS ! should clear the spying on us problems up I hope... but in the meantime, what to do ? I want to tell an app what permissions it has, most have no permission for anything unless i need them to do that function, but right now it is open season on my privacy.
ANy tips ?

I use LBE Privacy Guard, look for it in the Play Store. Quick note, it only works on ICS, its not compatible with JB.
Ya, I sadly installed and got all set up with cw 10 on JB only to find out they decided to remove all the permissions stuff to please google... why does google want you not to choose to block certain apps permissions... it's creepy.
I don't think Firefox is gaining much ground for our device. Ubuntu touch is gaining a lot of ground imo. I personally use permissions free

This just a conversation to get me to finally bite the bullet and finally root and install a ROM.
With all the delays or possible cancelations of JB on my i717, I have just about convinced myself to root and installation a rom. Avatar is looking good.
I have been using the go launcher and all its sub systems: phone, IM, twitter all the stuff so I need to figure out to remove all the go replace sub components. Is there a panel on one of the releases that makes this easy?
So do yous guys still think the i717 will still get an official 717 update?
Also, if looks like jb will remove the ability to move apps to the sd. At lease it did on my note 10.1. Think they will do the same if they release jb on the 717?
I read through all the fans and understand backup the IMs, data, contacts. What about apps (I have a ton and chagrin having reinstall
So first root, use titanium backup and then install a ROM? Also what is a modem? Usually I am familiar with the term as in phone interface. What is modem rom for?

I bet the original note gets a JB update. But I also bet the Note 3 will be out by then and Note 2 people will be begging for their key lime pie!!!
It doesn't matter what phone your on, your always going to be waiting for an update of some sort. So why wait... root it! It unlocks SO much potential in these phones. I've been flashing roms for years and love it! I've never had any problems because I've always done a lil research on software out there and followed the directions to a TEE! Since you're new at this I will direct you to this thread. Read the first 3 posts. They will answer 90% of your questions, especially post 3. Once your schooled and brain has cooled a lil, this is basically what you gotta do to get started.
So happy reading and rooting!

But with regards to rooting, its not like you're climbing Mt. Everest naked without oxygen. Its a two minute project.
And you only need to root if there is some app or some system action you need to do that having a stock system won't allow.
If you're undecided, then you don't need to do it. Those that need to just do it.

and also you can remove applications placed by the phone company that sometimes only eat some of the battery, even if you never even open them!
You can remove ad banners off the browser as well! saving data if you are not on unlimited plan(like myself)
hmm.. personally i root because of that reason, the ad blocking on the browser(i don't mind them on the apps unless they're sketching apps)
2nd reason would be being able to use the app named "autostarts" which controls the autorun's of any app on your phone! Wisely used, you can stop user apps from restarting themselves and such, just never use on system apps and that means more ram and more battery

Maybe it isn't climbing Everest, but I do rely on my phone and in turn I need it reliable. Lockups and waiting for reboots is a worry.
I need apps to work at least 95 percent of the time. I understand and occasionally sunspot caused glitch is acceptable but should be occasional. So yes, I do worry about my constant companion.
I am not just talking about rooting but finding the right ROM which will make my phone more usable and more reliable than the At&t stock rom, just trying to find the right one and install it right the first time.

the best part is it is very easy to do! even a silly girl like me could root and do all this "mt everest" stuff ehehe its very simple!
and really nothing bad will happen to your phone and i assume you take good care of it :highfive:
i dont evne mind those warrantys things, i take care of my androids as i would a pet or something
and make sure they come in good state and all when out of the box
when i had my first android some years ago i softbricked it and cried! on my first attempt.. because i skipped one step(NEVER SKIP A STEP) but then i saw there's solution to everything.. unless it exploded or something but that never happens yay :victory:
and now i feel these things are useless without root permissions.. it's the first thing i do the moment i get them and come back home! :fingers-crossed:

You don't need a rooted phone to install roms. Just a PC, cable, and Odin software.
What you could possibly need is to install a custom recovery like TWRP. That is WAY more important that worrying about rooting your phone. Why? Because you could install roms from your phone and skip the PC. All non-stock roms are already rooted.
You have 16gigs of internal memory for apps - thats like about 200 apps, so you don't need to move them to external sd card.
What you should do is make sure all those apps store their data on the external card. Then you have protected your data and kept your memory for apps.
What app/process you you need to do that requires root permission of your file system? Every concern you mentioned has nothing to do with root permisions of your file system.
Maybe your question should be "Why should I flash non-stock roms over the stock Gingerbread I have now? A Conversation"

If you want dependable, don't go past 4.04 ICS ROMs, because above that, the ROMs come from other phones and developers have to squeeze them into our phone. The result is random reboots, freezing, main features not working (TV out, s-pen, Bluetooth connectivity issues, to name a few main ones).
Everyone else is going to argue to defend their reason for what they did to their phone -- I answered based on your stated needs.

Thanks for the advice, one of the reasons I am looking at upgrading is I also want google now which only cones with jb.

That's a good reason. But our JB ROMs are the result of great effort and professionalism from our developers, but they are experimental and have issues. So to gain some features, you will definitely lose some.
I have been using 4.1.# then 4.2.2 and I think I'm going back to the N7005 ROM because I miss the features I bought the phone for. Anyway, as someone said, read and decide what the tradeoffs are, and you can always go backwards.
Ok, decided to go with Kangparanoid rom... Right now I have a stock unrooted ROM. What is the best way to create a perfect backup of what I have now to restore current state.
Also is there an easy way to restore all my apps (include what's been moved to my external sd card) post jb upgrade?

Nice rom choice! I'm actually using it right now!!
I vote for titanium backup to backup all your stuff. I use the pro version so I can't remember if you can move apps to sd card in the free version or not. Once you open titanium you have it backup EVERYTHING! It will backup your apps, call logs, text messages, wifi passwords, bookmarks, alarms, etc..... Do this on your phone now. Then root your phone and make a nandroid backup in recovery. Install your rom and sign into your phone using the same gmail acct you had previously. You'll find that most of your apps will begin to reinstall themselves. Once you got titanium on your new rom installed open it but do not, I repeat do NOT restore everything! Titanium backs up system files that shouldn't be restored because they were from your previous rom. Just click individual apps that you want to restore. Titanium color codes everything nicely. System files are red and mean business! Apps installed already are white. Your call logs and messages will be yellow. Those you can restore. Backed up apps not installed will have a line thru them. I've been using titanium for years since android 1.5 came out. So it works on any rom!

I vote for titanium backup to backup all your stuff. I use the pro version so I can't remember if you can move apps to sd card in the free version or not. Once you open titanium you have it backup EVERYTHING! It will backup your apps, call logs, text messages, wifi passwords, bookmarks, alarms, etc..... Do this on your phone now. Thank you Thank you! I have had titanium backup for year but only on an old tablet that I can't do anything with anymore. It's rooted but no roms available for it.
Thought I would have to root the phone before I could back it up, but will follow you plan.

pardon me, but i'm pissed. I started fiddling with this thing yesterday with no luck now i've just spent the past 5 hours with this crap...i upgraded from the s3 and have no fkn idea why they've made some features so fkn difficult....excuse my language.
here's my problem, before changing phones i used mybackup to backup sms, mms, call logs, contacts and apps. Well after searching i see the reware directory needs to be put in the legacy/emulated folder....i did that but mybackup still can't see it. No problem, i'll do everything with good old Kies...but i can't find kies on the S5, market or samsung store. i've tried every fkn thing...i plugged in my old phone and downloaded easy back up and some other crap that's for rooted phones only. i can't find the easybackup directory. i downloaded some wifi transfer apps and the free ones have transfer limits...
can someone please help me before i throw this fkn phone and break it? thanks and btw my s5 and s3 aren't rooted.

First a question: Are you afraid of rooting/tripping knox?
Answers: 1) Root will help with this. Get titanium backup PRO, but it requires root. I have been using it for I don't know how long.
2) Root will help with this. The S3 can be rooted and then returned to stock for your backing up needs. Once you root the S5 for your restoring needs, knox flag will trip and stay with you.

I use My Backup Pro and if I'm not mistaken only the pro version will restore from one phone to a different phone. I'd also suggest using the cloud option. I backed up my S4 and restored to my S5 in minutes using the cloud and did not attempt it on a memory chip. It's also possible that KitKat security changes might make reading the data from the chip a problem. I am also not rooted yet.

Good idea to try the cloud, I never tried that.
KitKat only messed up the WRITE to SD card permissions, there's an app that restores it though on the play store. READING from the SD card to restore your backups and other things is not a problem even without the fix.

Super Backup from the play store is great for backing up and restoring all your messages, contacts, and call log. It saves them as tiny XML files, and even gives you the option to e-mail it to yourself. Then you can restore it just as easily in the app on the new phone. You can browse for the file, so you don't have to worry about where it's saved. Just e-mail it to your gmail and download it right back on the new phone.
I used this method for myself (I have the stupid AT&T variant that is going back soon, no root, no hope, no nothing) and friends and family with no root.
As for the apps, I just let Play Store reinstall it it whether it's after a full wipe and install of a ROM or moving to a new phone.. But if you have certain apps that can't be obtained from Play Store, and since you obviously don't have Titanium Backup having no root, Super Backup can also backup the apps, then browse to the backup folder for the APK files it saves and move it over manually. Use a file explorer to open the apk and install.

thanks for the advice, but i'm not rooting right now. this is my 7th Android phone, i rooted the first 5, but i didn't root the s3 and have no plans of rooting this unless there's some incredible features that i really desire. i use to root back in the day to get the features that now come stock. Most of the things i dreamed of having on my phone now come stock, so i now don't see much need to root. Besides i have nightmares about the last 2 devices i rooted....gps no longer worked, phones started rebooting by themselves more often (every android i had did that but after rooting it seemed to happen more often)....i got tired of doing camera fixes, gps fixes, bluetooth not working.......i don't know, maybe the game has changed in 2014 and roms are more stable. I was deep into that starting with my g1, then my Nexus (the very first Nexus, i paid like $500 for it). I respect the developers and those who root their devices, i just don't see much personal need for it with these megaphones on the market in 2014.
What would rooting my S5 this early give me? Its currently fast enough, smooth, i love the camera, everything works like a charm(gps, bluetooth, etc...), my battery is CURRENTLY lasting all day with heavy use (i'm no fool, i know that wont last forever, especially coming from the another samsung phone). With all the widgets and things i have, i don't have a desire to root, maybe months from now, i'll get bored with the phone and see some good features....but rooting now.....you care to share your favorite features that a rooted S5 is currently bringing?

do you know the name of the app that restores it? also, Strychtnine, i have mybackuppro, but saved the backup to sdcard...i no longer have another phone so i can't backup mybackuppro online. i used easy backup and saved to google drive, thankfully I was able to restore my sms, mms and call logs....unfortunately many of my contacts didnt restore, i never had that issue with mybackup, its always been my preferred and most trusted backup app dating back to the G1.
A couple other questions while I have a few of you in this thread.
Where is Kies? is it no longer available....i used it heavily with the S3, i don't see it on the s5, playstore, or samsung store. Is there another free app that will allow me to view files on my computer and make changes like Kies? Wifi Transfer is cool but it has a very small transfer limit (i think it was like 10mb or something). I'm not into Google Drive, i use it for hosting music but its a pain to me....first 100mb takes around an hr to upload, then i have to download it on my phone, which takes another few minutes. I honestly prefer the good ole days of plugging the usb to the computer and boom! By the way, has that feature returned with the s5? i plugged usb to computer but it says can't find software. I searched online for s5 drivers and can't find a thing. Any suggestions? i took several pics that i want to send to computer, i don't feel like using google drive, with gmail, i'd have to attach all the files then download them.....i wish i could just connect phone to computer (usb or wireless) and copy/paste files. thanks

I feel what your saying about the past devices and the problems that Custom Roms can create. Root however is different. I use root to run apps that require root i.e., Titanium backup, Greenify, GSAM battery, etc...
Kitkat 4.4.2 and probably Android going forward is some what weird if you think about it. It brought great features like being able to turn off apps (bloat) that you don't use in manage apps, and allows moving apps to the sd card...But on the same note they crippled the SD card write permissions for what reason? Oxymoron? So again here you need root to be able to edit the permissions file or use that SDfix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix from the playstore. Note the first thing In the description is ROOT REQUIRED.
I also like Xposed and modules which allows me to customize certain things without needing a custom rom. Note that Xposed is causing some people problems with lag, S health, and Private mode not working.
I have two S5's both with root. On one S health works but Private mode doesn't. NO noticed lag.
The other one however, has extreme lag and freezing, and both S health and Private modes broken don't know why the difference. I don't use S health nor Private mode so no problem there but the lag was terrible so had to uninstall Xposed on the second one. Root alone doesn't break anything.

Kies 3 is available I don't see it on the phone which is good it connects right up once you plug up with computer. http://www.samsung.com/sg/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP . Make sure you select the install for the NEWER phones Note 3 and newer I think it says.

I just plugged it in and windows 7 installed the drivers right away...Maybe once you install Kies above it will install the drivers for you... The S5 actually come with USB 3.0. If you have USB 3.0 on your computer the transfer speeds will be insanely faster than previous phones. Why use Kies just use windows explorer for transfers, Kies just becomes a middle man!
