[Q] editing the build.prop has no effect on Polaroid PMID4311 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a few questions concerning the Polaroid PMID4311 (a cheapo 4.3 inch allwinner CPU device running 4.0 my little brother picked up). Fist off let me say I am no noob at android, and have had much experience modding my galaxy player. The problem is he wants to play some Gameloft games (nova 2, asphalt 6), but of course they give infamous "this device is not compatible request a refund" message. So no biggie, I just change the model in build.prop, right? Now here is the mystery; it doesn't make any difference what I change the model to - it still gives the error and still shows the original model under "about device" in system settings. I have done this countless times on other devices with no problem. I have checked the default.prop, and the boot image is insecure (ro.secure=0). The device came rooted. Any thoughts? Also, if anyone has this device, I seem to have lost my backup of the original build.prop, and would appreciate a copy. Thank you!

I use notepad++ on windows, but have also edited it on the device using root explorer. I know this isn't the issue since certain properties will work if I change them (example: I can change the firmware version from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2).

Ok, get root explorer plus, using web. Edit build.prop with text editor. Delete backup. Turn off tablet. Turn back on. Done!

Dude, I'm not an idiot! I have been telling you I have already done this multiple times. I know perfectly well how to edit a build.prop, but what I am saying it's it seems to have no effect on this device for some reason. I really don't need to figure it out anymore since I just edited the apks to remove the compatibly check.
Sent from my YP-G1 running Nebula B1

Sorry was more stupid back then get root explorer and edit it once you have done so reboot. If that doesn't work maybe what you are trying to do on there doesn't work look at the experience in my eyes

I just want to get this out of the way.. Install superuser then edit the build.Prop
Should work.

Porting ROMs from other devices?

I asked this over in Android General and I was pointed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598713
Could anyone confirm if this would allow porting of a ROM like HTC Sense to the Xperia?
I posted this here as I reckon that if it is indeed possible, it could be of some use to the dev community in here. If not, mods can delete this
Our phone only has 480mb internal storage.
HTC Sense is well over 1gb just for the ROM.
Sent from R800x
that's wron
a normal sense 4.0a rom needs 420mb system partition
our is only 300mb.
so we need to decrease the zip (remove apps) and move some apps to /data in zip.
then symlink /data
and then we can go porting it
I would use a Sense 4 rom , I'm going to mess around later lol.

Remember, you can only use a ROM for a device on the same Arm as Xperia Play.
I'm gonna have a look at messing around with the HTC One S firmware

I know what the error is. I need to jump into Linux to unpack the kernel and edit the init.rc file (Only possible on Linux).
Going to flash back to MIUI temporarily to move the files onto my SD card to shift them onto Linux. Going to do that a bit later on as Im going to be a bit busy. If I get anything working I'll PM you and Dropbox the ROM for you to try If all comes back working, I'll release it to the general users
This will hopefully be my first ROM development
Tried again and can't get past the kernel screen.
Back to the drawing board. Gonna try a Samsung CM7 build now
Having no luck with this. Any devs with more knowledge than me feel free to take over

Status 6 Error with flashing ROM cooked with dsixda's Rom Kitchen

Hey there,
I've just been getting into ROM development and have a Sprint Samsung GNEX (toroplus) and a Google Nexus 7 (grouper). I made an AOSP build of 4.1.1 for my N7 and was using dsixda's ROM Kitchen to add root functionality, busybox, and to change the name of the ROM. I keep getting a "Status 6" error when trying to flash the ROM after building it.
I looked in the FAQ section of the thread and saw that it had to do with incorrect formatting due to using the wrong text editor, but the thing is that I haven't touched Windows while building this, it's all been on Linux.
So after flashing it, I used the "Report Error" function and check the recovery log, looks like there are some syntax errors. Could anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Of course, the first thread I make has a typo in the Title. Wow. Can a moderator fix the typo in the title? Thanks!
Just click on edit then advanced and edit the title.
Personally I would suggest just building with those features from source.

You are using an aosp rom. There shouldn't be any reason you need the android kitchen. Go to github.com/cyanogenmod/android_build read the commit history. Should give you some insight with building a better busy box and root. Look up the system su from cyanogenmod ect ect.

Well if you read and understand then, you know you have to edit the emulator binary. Another option would be to compile the emulator from source using a simple random.random generator replacing the string your looking to change.

[Q]Android version identification

Hi everyone!
I hope someone here will have an asnwer for my question...
So , the question is, How can I know for sure, which Android version runs on my device, if I don't trust the information
provided in "build.prop" file.
Specifically, how can I be sure I have an ICS and not GB ?
Thank you in advance!

Furthermore if your running ICS for android version it should have a number ranging from 4-4.04.

Thanks, but both answers don't help in my case, as they do use the contents of "build.prop".
In my case, I don't trust "build.prop" , and hence looking for alternative ways to determine the Android version.

What's your beef with build.prop? The only other way I know is to download a ROM of your choice, unzip it, Look in META-INF>com>android> and open up the metadata file and you should be able to see it in there. But, I suppose that could be fudged as well. Is someone launching some sort of Android conspiracy against you?

LOL .
OK I'll explain myself...
I have a chinese phone, which runs Android.
Manufacturer , releases new ROMs from time to time.
Last few ROMs, were "4.0.3", as it was written in "build.prop", but after installation,
I saw there is no Right to Left support, and for me , that is a sign, that the ROM isn't really 4.0.3,
as (AFAIK) 4.0.3 supports RTL out ofthe box...
Now, I still hope they will release real 4.0.X ROM some day, but till then, I don't want
to install every ROM they release. I want to identify whether ROM is 2.3.6 or 4.0.X before I Install it,
and not based on "build.prop".
So, I hope now you have full explanation, and will be able to help.
Thanks!

Download the rom open it with 7zip and go to system-SW_configuration.xml
Open it with notepad++ and check the firmware.
The same thing you can do it with root explorer in your phone.
I don't believe he changed all the xml's just to make users believe is an ICS rom

[Q] Help Please- 70b Internet Tablet-What SDE or ROM to use

Hello Everyone,
I am not new to flashing.
I have an Archos 70b IT.
I have the newest Honeycomb firmware on it.
The SDE from Archos for Gen8 or Gen9 does not work.
I keep getting Update Failed 1 error.
So if someone has this tablet, how did you update it to ICS???
How do I root this thing?
The Specs for the 70b vs. the 70
http://www.arctablet.com/blog/archos-tablet/archos-70b-it-review-part-1-introduction/
***funny note- Archos has this tablet listed under Gen9 in the firmware downloads section. I spoke to their Tech Support and they said it is a Gen8 device. They said there is a JB unit called the 70 Titanium that will be released soon.
Can someone help me here please.
I can't get ADB to work.
Can you tell me what you did or send me the files you are using for ADB?
I would like to root this unit or better put ICS on it.

Wow man, you are just way too helpful.
This site is for people to help each other or so I thought.
I clearly told you that I tried a few times to do it and I could not get it to work. You have the file that can help me get things up and running but you rather not help out.
Whatever man, keep it.
KARMA!
This Archos section is the least helpful section of XDA that I have encountered thus far. This does not HELP promote getting more people to use or support these devices.
You should do yourself a favor and see how the Samsung community helps each other e.g. this section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41185753#post41185753

I will not share you a file that you can make by a simple command.
For Linux users only: You need to add a udev rule if ADB only works as root:
Create a file /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules that contains the following lines:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device",
ENV{PRODUCT}=="e79/*", MODE="0666"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="e79", MODE="0666"
Make the rule known to udev with the following command:
udevadm control --reload-rules (or udevcontrol reload_rules on older systems)

I don't use Linux.
Not interested in learning something else.
I will just sell this crap and buy another Galaxy Tab which is much better.
Problem solved.
U have to calm down. I was asking so many questions before like "I dont use linux blabla" and then Divx told me "mavasilisk is afraid of learning new things" and I started to find the answers myself. Its not only about the linux, dude.
