Picked up my Droid DNA at local Verizon Store (NYC) - HTC Droid DNA

This will update over time as I have more findings.
First,
The signal strength is amazing. HTC must have done it right . With completely new chips and radios??
The cubicle I am in now is a "dead spot". For HTC One-x , it stays consistently at edge (for both ATT and Tmobile sim card, even Tmobile's 1900mhz is available on the street in NYC near my building).
Galaxy Nexus and Droid Razr (Maxx) all these three can only pick up one bar of 4G or 1 bar of 3G , most of time 3G or nothing at my spot. Everyday so much battery was wasted here due to cell signal and switching between 1G/2G/3G/4G, for all ROMS. (stock, CM10, etc etc). And I don't care the displayed cell strength, but for email/news/apps, the data was simply UNUSABLE.
And guess what... 4 bars of 4G with HTC Droind DNA here, without a hiccup. It is ONE bar short of full bar , at my same cubicle here...
I think this is first surprise.
Screen is amazing , and I don't have better words for it than those reviews. But for my situation, who sits at a corner where there were almost no cell coverage, this is the very first and biggest surprise so far
Will update on Battery Life soon.

Glad to hear about your signal... My gnex was always in the middle but I do notice less switch back to 3g ... Battery life is pretty unbelievable considering the size of the device and size of the battery... Pleasantly surprised

While the DNA does have excellent reception, you may want to check the actual numerical value, I've caught the meter being a little overstated, but nothing terrible.

Getting better service on this phone as well. For the first time being on Verizon I'm getting full 4G bars in my area. Phone so far has been nothing less than amazing! Screen is just beautiful, and a must see in person. Phone is super fast and smooth as butter.

That is a good point.
I checked before the main post to make sure the signal is actually better.
It was -95 at my current location.
Used to be easily smaller than -110 if not -120 which is completely no signal.
End of the day, it is the ability to open Google Play Store, Sync Email, use WeChat , Make phone calls that actually impressed me .

With the phone now in the wild will be interesting to see how it lives up to the expectations.
My wife picked one up this afternoon. The battery died very quickly from its 40% reported level, but will likely hold up better after we charge it properly. Also, the Sense keyboard got borked after a couple hours. It would enlarge the letter on the keyboard itself when pressed, but nothing would show up in the text field. A reboot fixed that issue (hopefully permanently).
I am still undecided between the DNA, GN2 and the Razr HD. So far the DNA looks like the best from the bunch, especially if we end up getting an AOSP ROM on it eventually.

Yes I plugged into my T-Mobile sim card.
It is a instance OK to go. no issues.

I didn't pick mine up in New York but I didn't want to start a new topic
Yesterday i decided I would give the DNA a try. I've been debating if I want this or the Note 2 but the Note 2 isn't out yet, so I figured if I didn't like the DNA I could always return it within 14 days.
I got the impression yesterday that the people at the store didn't really want to sell me the phone. I got there at 11:00 AM and I was told they didn't have their shipments in yet. The guy took my number and said he'd call me as soon as I got them. At 4:00 PM I have not received a call yet and I decide to call them. Lady on the phone tells me they do have them she sounded surprised when I told her about my 11:00 AM experience so she went back to double check and came back telling me they did have them. At 4:15 PM I arrive at the store and tell one of the guys that I'm t here for the phone and he tells me that they don't have them. I tel him I was just told they did and he mentions something about only having them to ship, but then he goes back and comes back telling me they do have them.
Either they didn't really want to sell them, or the people at the Verizon store in Vernon Hills, Illinois are horrible at communicating with each other.
As for the phone, I have to say that right away I started to remember how much I disliked Sense. But that's based on previous experience with the Thunderbolt. The only real complaint I have is the power button, it's quite difficult for me to get to but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon, I'm just so used to devices with the power button on the side now.
The screen is beautiful but I've never been a huge resolution freak, When I look at it next to my Galaxy Nexus they look the same to me. I mean, its bigger and brighter but what I mean is I'm not all like "oh obviously this one is so much sharper". I'm far sighted, they all look blurry to me anyway
Anyway, pretty happy with it so far. Very fast phone, very bright nice screen, good loud speaker. We'll see how well it handles a full Thanksgiving day!
Happy Thanksgiving day to those celebrating today

If you're willing to drive another 15 minutes next time you need to go to a Verizon store, I'd recommend using the Northbrook store. They've always been very helpful and surprisingly knowledgeable.

I also bought my DNA at the Vernon Hills, IL store and had the exact same experience. First they said it's not in stock, then while I'm making arrangements to have it shipped they walk out and hand me one.

At least you were given the option to have it shipped, I didn't even get that lol.
I had a phone conversation with my sister today while I used speaker phone on the DNA, everything sounded perfect! Really liking this phone so far.

New Photon With Issue

I bought a Photon from a guy off CL today. It was new but one that was sent back as a warranty replacement phone. Still had the screen protector on it, the battery was in a sealed as was the back plate.
Here's my issue
When youre using the phone, about every 15 seconds, the displays shuts down. It doesnt actually shut down, it just displays nothing.. the display light at the bottom is still on and pressing the power button twice fixes it for about 15-20 seconds. Basically you have to put the screen to sleep and then wake it back up to the lock screen.
Is this a known issue or did I get a lemon? Ill probably never track this guy down again to make this right.
Have you tried chaning the display settings?
Settings >> Display >>> Screen time out increase to something else??? While you are there make sure it is not on 15second timeout????
Having the timeout at this setting would explain this weirdness?

Take it to the sprint store. My first off ebay was riddled with issues, second from asurion is still running flawless

Try
Settings,Dispaly, Screen time out.
It not the screen timeout. The screen isnt actually going off.. its just going black.. the backlight stays on and the buttons stay lit up and touching the screen actually makes things happen, you just cant see them happening. Actually turning the screen off and then back on with the power button is the only way to fix it.
Well, took it to Sprint and they wouldnt touch it. Told me it had to be on the account for 30 days. I doubt I have any luck getting the guy I bought it from to help me get it warrantied so I guess Im stuck with yet another Sprint POS.
Took the phone to a non corporate store and talked the tech into ordering me a replacement. We discussed that phone versus the Epic 4G Touch and he agreed with me that the Photon was a far superior device from an actual phone standpoint.
Nice you lucked out.

This is garbage if you have TEP there is no reason they shouldn't work on your phone...
Rule #1. Never tell sprint you bought a phone from Craigslist or any other place besides radio shack, target, bestbuy etc. I've purchased a **** ton of CL phones so i have experience lol. When you buy a CL phone you just call to activate it and if they ask just say you got it full price from best buy. They shouldn't really ask questions. Also, if your previous phone was insured it should transfer over without question. As far as getting a replacement, you need to create an elaborate story with details and make believe issues then they'll send you out a replacement lol. They like to "troubleshoot" first.

Yeah mine expires feb 17th this year. Not sure if I'm staying or switching. I've definitely never had an issue getting a replacement phone for one that I purchased from CL. I hope it works out for you!!
Hello,
With Sprint switching to LTE and the fact that there are Cities like Las Vegas where 3G Speeds have increased greatly has me leaning towards staying.
In truth, thanks to my EVO 3D fiasco, I have a 0 Dollar ETF so I could leave Sprint today without paying a dime. It is just after being with them for almost 13 years with a perfect Payment History really helps when it comes to getting credits, swaps, etc..
Also, I really think that the Photon is about as good as any Android Device out there. I do think the RAZR is rad and hope that Sprint gets something similar when the LTE Devices are released in June or so.
Cheers,
JJ
Sprints beefing up 3G and 4G. So for cities without LTE by mid 2012 3G updates should start rolling out. Of course their goal is to have LTE coverage everywhere by 2013. As much as sprint pisses me off they by far have the best plans for voice and data.
The coverage where I live is awful. Not to mention that Sprint has treated me like crap throughout this whole Epic 4G Touch ordeal. I seriously have almost become unemployed because of this phone and Ive gotten no sympathy from Sprint whatsoever.
I understand there are policies and stuff in place but when you have someone telling you "Look, this phone loses signal and you guys KNOW It loses signal and Ive already been written up twice at work because of this phone" youd think you'd get a little sympathy. All I got from Sprint was "Well, just reboot it when that happens" and told to go on my merry way.

When people expect to be able to get in touch with you and cant, why not? Makes it look like Im not doing my job when people call me and the calls go straight to voicemail and when LoS happens on the Epic 4G Touch, thats exactly what happens.

Yep and I work in IT support so a lot of times, Im in server rooms all the time and those things are like standing in wind tunnels. Its hard enough to hear a phone ring in there when its working right. When it goes LoS, I have no way of knowing until I can get somewhere and pull the phone out of my pocket.
Its Samsung.. I got sucked back in and bought another one after I swore after the Nexus S I was done with them. But, I mistakenly thought "Well, theyve had this phone out overseas for 6 months, they have the bugs worked out of it." I guess I should have considered that overseas is GSM and that added a whole new wrinkle to the equation.

I'm kinda torn on what to do right now..

Ive had my Razr since Dec and ive loved it. Im not a super user, as root is enough for me and I dont use custom ROMs. But still, everything with Moto has been frustraiting with bootloaders, ICS, ect.
I am also grandfathered in for unlim VZ data, as I typicalled use 25ish GB per month. Ive been worried about loosing it with a future upgrade.
Well it turns out that I have an upgrade at the end of this month... and the SIII is coming out (pre ordres start tomorrow). And Vz said you will keep unlim data if you preorder (supposed anyways):
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/0...erizon-and-you-keep-your-unlimited-data-plan/
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/galaxy-s3/
The SIII looks slick and I like some of the new features. Only thing I can think of right now is that it does not have HDMI, and I do use that a few times a month..
So if I chose to upgrade, Im sure I could sell my Razr for a couple hundred and basically pay for my upgrade. Or if I didnt like the SIII, i should have the 14 days to return it. Or if I didnt like it, I could sell it to another VZ customer who doesnt have an upgrade yet. I could make a little money and save them from paying full retail on it.
Really not sure what I wanna do right now.
comparision of some phones
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/0...credible-4g-lte-vs-galaxy-nexus-vs-razr-maxx/
I would be very careful about upgrading to the Galaxy S III. It uses a variation of the same radio set in the Galaxy Nexus, and the reception is *horrible* on that phone (compared to the Razr or Rezound). In many places, I had no data signal at all (-120dBm), but in those same places my RAZR Maxx and Rezound both have 2+ bars of 4G and -89dBm...which I realize is not the 4G signal strength, but the results are in the speeds.
Using the Nexus in places that I had 0 bars I'd have no signal (couldn't connect at all). Turn on the RAZR Maxx or Rezound and I connect with 2-3 bars of 4G and speedtests average around 4-7Mbps. Not awesome, but at least I have signal (and it's still faster than most 3G). That kind of compromise is a *big* one. I work close to the lake and have absolutely no data signal at work on the Nexus...yet I have a great signal all day long with my RAZR.
I'd say give it a shot and see how it performs, but make sure to pay attention to how strong of a signal you have.
Mo-to! Mo-to! Mo-to!

Then it's up to you to decide, man. The SIII also has a higher resolution screen, but I feel the Motorola screen is much more "natural looking"... Not to mention the SIII has a terrible design compared to the Razr.
Really though, look at what forum where you're asking this in.

My friend at work has the Nexus and his signal here is fine. As for what kind of signal i would get at home, well that could be a different story.
But they also just got the .04 update and it was supposed to fix some radio issues. He said he could notice a difference on it as well. Hopfully they didnt make the same mistake on the SIII

You know I don't work in the same place as your friend, right? lol Where *I* work, I get no signal at all in the Nexus...yet all of the other Verizon LTE phones get perfectly fine signal. It's a known problem with the Nexus radio (Samsung makes poor CDMA radios).
And that was on 4.0.4. I've had it for about 2 months already. The one going out now is the same one I've had. It did improve reception, but not at work.
If you don't use custom ROMs, why do you mind the bootloader?
My ex gets LTE on her RAZR Maxx while on my GNEX I Would get 3G. The Nexus does have a ****ty radio compared to the RAZR. Also the handoff between 3G and LTE is not that great even with the 4.0.4 radios.
SIII voice quality (outgoing) is HORRIBLE!! Call into someone's voicemail with both phones and record yourself reading a paragraph. Then listen to yourself. It's astonishing to me that people put up with such horrible outgoing quality.
+1 on the useless radio.
The SIII isn't branded as a "Nexus", so it's not a Google-pick. You'd just be buying another shackled phone... And if you're going to buy a shackled phone, buy one with a good radio.
This advice comes with a 100% money-back guarantee. If for any reason you are not satisfied with this advice, I will refund every penny you paid for it.
Not sure if this means anything to you, but I just upgraded to a RAZR MAXX knowing full well the S3 is due in a week or so. For me cost was part of the issue as I was looking to do an upgrade while still keeping my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I am just 12 months into my contract and not eligible for a new subsidized phone, but apparently they are clearing stock of the MAXX as the HD is approaching and I got the MAXX for $199.
My only complaint is the yellowishness of the whites. I'm taking this one to the store tomorrow to see if I can get one with white whites. I'm using a color calibrator to increase the blues to get me a real white, but that seems to be a work around and not a fix.
Other than that I cannot get over the thinness of the phone even though this is the thicker of the two RAZRs. Very comfortable to use. I'm not a Blur fan, but I love Moto hardware. Great voice quality.

Beings that my friend at work has the Nexus and gets good service... I too would get good service there... but idk about at home. Its just one of the major places i would be on my phone the most. If the S3 will have the same radio, well then it should work fine at work for me.

What phone did you upgrade from?
Since ive already got the regular Razr, I fell like it would be a waste of money to spend my upgrade on a Maxx. You can buy the conversion kits for like $127 shipped (last time i checked anyways) with everything you need.

Loving the HTC EVO 4G LTE : Disliking Sprint Support & Coverage

So I bit and ported out of my (off-contract) nearly 12yr+ VerizonWireless service a few days ago and went for this phone and Sprint's unlimitted data, ect... on a 3 line plan which included a base LGE Android Rezound for my girlfriend & was also talked into their "Home Connect" box since I already had long ago dropped my home line since Verizon's coverage was superb in my home and I don't make enough calls outside of the network to bother with a home phone.
Here I am, All modded up running [ROM] Sep-13 MeanROM ICS v4.2 | 2.13.651.1 | Mods | Batt saver and a happy camper with my EVO other than:
-I only get about 1 bar in my house if any and numerous dropped calls.
-My Phone is stuck on "Roaming" even in a top/solid GREEN area on the Verizon coverage map where I work.
-The "Home Connect" is being shipped to me and won't arrive until Monday (This isn't a problem in itself). I just expect to have the same ****ty service with it as my home phone since I'm told it still uses the Sprint towers. (Note: My home is on the frings of good/fair regarding my address and Sprint's Coverage map which has been ruthlessly pointed out to me by the Sprint support techs I've talked to as of late)... Thus their excuse as to maybe I should just switch to another provider. (Insert another sarcasm smiley ---> )
So my first discussion with a Sprint Agent via *2 yesterday sounded promising. Immediately she recgonized and sympathized with my problem at home and mentioned/recommended a "Free" AirAve box system to plug into my highspeed cable wifi in order to boost my signal. She also had me try a "Profile" update just for kicks which did absolutely nothing. This agent felt like I was a strong candidate for one of these boxes and advised that it would likely be approved free of charge in order to retain me as a new customer.
Today, A whole new story. I first get a call back from that former agent that was working on the approval for the AirAve. She felt again, after I reported having several dropped calls today, one while we were attempting to converse, that I would get one of these shipped out. I told her about my concerns of the 14-day trial I was in and wanted to assure I would get and know if this device would benefit me before that was up and I would have no recourse then on getting a refund and out of my 2yr contract. She assured me she was working on getting it approved with her supervisor as we spoke and was just about to read me a confirmation number of some sorts when (*BINGO*) my call dropped yet again.
So back I go on the phone dialing *2 and going through all the bs steps to connect with yet another agent (you never get the same one, nor do they have the ability to connect you to that other one even when you give them their name...) This agent takes a new turn with me after I go through my dilema. I am told absolutely no free AirAve until I am with Sprint for 90 days. I tell her I can't accept this as I'm not going to chance waiting out my 14day return window in hopes to months later find out if I can actually have phone conversations whilst at home. She puts me on hold to connect to her supervisor to discuss but (*BOING*), yet another dropped call.
I call back several more times and speak to several different agents while not as harsh as the last, inform me that their normal policy is 90 days to qualify for an AirAve assist device BUT that their supervisors can sometimes over-ride this depending on the conditions. So things are left at their records indicating that the original Agent from yesterday whom is in my corner in trying to get me the AirAve has submitted for supervisor approval, however, they won't be making that decision until a weekday (Monday) at the earliest.
-----------------------------
So here I am pondering what to do.
-Keep having faith and patience with this run-around in hopes that this AirAve will solve my problems even if I do qualify to get one.
-Start shopping other providers: AT&T or back to Verizon which I don't really want to do. :crying:
Anyone have opinions on this or a similar experience?
Sprint is great but do not put yourself in a service crunch. The 14 days are there for you to review this. I suggest trying, T-Mobile & *cringe* AT&T before crawling back to Verizon.
Whatever carrier, just make sure you have reliable coverage where you frequent.
The cost will be restocking fees, .vs getting locked in a 2 year agreement you're unhappy with.

Did you have LTE coverage with Verizon at your house?? I'd be tempted to go back even if their data plans are getting ridiculous. AT&T basically just announced an almost identical sharing plan as Verizon so I guess the lessor of the 2 evils will depend on 4g coverage. At least AT&T has the HTC One so you can get close to the same phone as the EVO LTE. It really does suck being on fringe coverage and you definitely don't want to get locked in to 2 years.

Yep, I believe Verizon did/does have the LTE coverage at my house if you mean the 4G. I had the Droid X so never benefited by that though. I'm really at a toss as to what to do. I never chewed through that much data even when on Verizon, it was just the fact of them screwing us former subscribers updating to the Non-Unlimited along with the "New every 2 perks" ending up being a $30 off but +$30 upgrade fee and **** like that had me burned. I even had my Ford motor company 20% discount with Verizon. Wonder if I could even get back to where I was with that if I went back. :crying: Sprint was going to be giving me a 23% discount.'
Had my eye on that damn Droid Razr Maxx to, damnit!!! Actually, the girlfriend doesn't really even need a smartphone, just something to text with and I could do without a home phone since with Verizon my coverage was good.
Oh, what to do..... I'm still erked about having to leave Spring behind. Especially the EVO :crying:
Sprint provided us with an Airave because after 7+ years, all of a sudden we were getting poor signal strength at our house. My EVO didn't seem to be affected but my wife's flip phone was dropping calls so often it was pointless to use. Really just wanted to let you know that the Airave does work well (at least in our case) always 4+ bars and no more dropped calls. Doesn't do anything for data transfer though.
Hope you can get yours free, we did but have been with Sprint for 10+ years.
Good Luck!
Welcome to sprint..I have spent countless hours of non pleasure dealing with them on the phone.
Tip #1. Get it in writing...they hardly ever follow thru... I record our conversations and tell them up front that I am..2 out of 3 agents hang up ( accidental disconnect) as soon as I tell them

Sprint Airave
I was having horrible signal and dropped calls in my house for almost 18 months. I wasn't aware of the airave and was close to cancelling my contract. After finally taking on the issue (which was prolonged via work, kids, etc) I came across information on the airave. I called sprint and gave them the old sob story on service and how disappointed I was. The supervisor spoke with me about my issue and explained the airave further. 10 minutes later I had an airave shipped out to me for free and no service charge (4.99/m). It absolutely makes a difference. I went from having like 0-1 bars and dropping calls to 5-6 bars instantly. Call quality is great and data moves like it should (I got the 3g airave that does voice and data)...it's absolutely worth it. Keep on pressing them...you should be able to qualify and get the device with service for free..Good Luck

Thanks for your post. It gives me some hope, althought admittedly I'm currently on hold with the Verizon Winback Dept to check out my options in coming back to their service. The last thing I wanted to do but unfortunately Sprint CS has drivin me away and hard with last night's described communications as per the OP. I'll keep you all dated.
If your service is that bad and the Airave does not help out any(which if on fringe of signal it might b/c its able to pull more power to get signal as its not worried about battery life we are with cell phones...amongst other differences)....
If that doesn't help out and you can't get through the current time with it, then you might be best off switching to anyone else at least till Sprint makes it's NetworkVision upgrades in your area....After they are done you very well might see a signal increase as the upgrades will make some big changes to the markets overall...Sprint is set to have these completed by end of 2013, and you market isn't one of the early ones I dont think....thats why I suggest switch till then if the airave doesn't help...

Oh, I agree 100%. My real problem seems to be even having the chance at obtaining the Airave device at this point and I'm not willing to wait out the 90days I'm being told in order to acquire it on the whim it may or may not work if that is their stance I am prepared to go back to Verizon I guess the way it looks at this point. I will know by the end of tmrw on my decision and based on whether Sprint gets back in touch with me with a final answer and/or Verizon "Win Back" dept. gives me satisifaction and reason to come back. Their "limited" data pisses me off though. That is my biggest drawback, however, having non-limited data with Sprint as per how my service is now is useless. And no, I'm not looking or expecting to have the data necessarily at home as I have a strong Time Warner Cable Internet connection with Wi-Fi for that and also Comcast business for Wi-Fi at work, it's the situations like when streaming music whilst driving and/or out and about with no Wi-Fit/hotspots and wanting to watch Netflix, ect... where the "Un-limited" becomes viable to me.
This thing has totally consumed my time the past few days and my nerves are so shot. Why Sprint, Oh why..... Please treat the customer better and not give multiple conflicting answers between your agents that are misleading.
Just an update. I've called Verizon and had much better luck with their "Winback" department. Activation fees waived and all, even got my previous company discount re-enstated Phone on the way so a fair goodbye to Sprint, they had there chance and blew it. Never could cooperate between the reps in authorizing me an Airave device so I'm going with the coverage I know that works for me.
Farewell and thanks for the help!

The Sprint 14 day return policy is really a 13 day, plus the remainder of the day you activated policy..
If you you activated on a tuesday you have a week from monday to return the phones.

Just a heads up, if you decide not to stay with Sprint. And go with any other carrier. Not that you might have the same problem with other networks. And note that if you go with AT&T, they no longer carry Unlimited Data. From experience 4+ years...If you had Unlimited Data with AT&T and you use more then 3GB they will Slow down your Data Speed. I know this because I was a victim and got notitied by text messages.
That is one of the reason I canceled and came to Sprint.
I recently moved to a new home about two weeks now and noticed that when I had At&t. I could not get a signal for shut while I was indoors with the iPhone 4 I had. Now being a proud owner of a EVO I can use the phone indoors but to tell you the truth I am having issues with Internet. If I go upstairs or chilling in the living downstairs I can get decent Network speed to surf the web. At least its better then the no Data with the iPhone. Its weird cause my girl has the iPhone 4S with At&t. (she stayed with them cause she just upgraded to the iPhone 4S) She can not use the phone downstairs but can rock it upstairs with no problem. Internet and all..Well as we tested only in our room. Don't know about the other rooms. But yea she still needs to go out side to use her phone when making calls or surfing facebook when down stairs. So my point is, either check your other resource before pushing out on Sprint. Btw, at work I wasn't able to use my iPhone with ATT due to service. But now I can go all the way with this Sprint EVO at work. That's how I'm writing to you. Lol... Well even though I'm having Internet problems at my Casa, Im not that concern cause I will be getting WiFi soon from Comcast. Also check this link out:

Thanks for the reply and concerns along with the suggestions and help. Much more than SPRINT CS offered me other than the one lady whom disappeared into the wind...
I already have re-committed to Verizon. And I'm rather stoked and happy as they have waived the activation fees on the two lines and also upon me receiving an email from their winback dept after the fact, have granted me another $50 discount to be applied on my first bill for the purchase of my DROID RAZR MAXX of $199 so -$50 net cost will be $149 and my girlfriends phone will net out free after the $50 rebate.
I know I get great coverage with Verizon and will now even benefit from their LTE/4G expansion in my areas which SPRINT doesn't yet offer not is on their road map.
The Verizon winback rep even went over my previous account over the years and the max data usage I ever had (1-line though was just on a data plan then) was 2GB and my base plan includes Unlimited calling to anyone landline or cell / Unlimited Text to anyone / and 4GB Data which I can always upgrade/downgrade to an extra 2GB per month for $15
All in all I'm getting what I would have got with SPRINT regarding the price end of things. Aprox $160 a month plus the benefits I've stated above.
Again, SPRINT could have kept me IF they would have been more understanding and open with getting me an AIRAVE device and better explaining what roaming really meant on my plan. The store kiosk manager claimed I would incur absolutely no roaming charges ever no matter what and the last CS rep I spoke with at SPRINT claimed I would incur a .41 cent per minute charge beyond 800 min. per month roaming.
I'm roaming at work and roaming with very little signal at home. On their coverage map ironically, my work area shows in one of their Excellent/Good areas whilst my home shows Good/Fair.
Nothing makes sense with them. I have no idea why all this went south so quick but glad it did as it gave me the opportunity to return to a known reliable provider with good coverage and some extra perks/incentives for coming back. :highfive:

Why I'll stay with Motorola

So, based on my lurking here, I'm going to be in a small minority on this one. I own the Electrify, have it unlocked and after running jokersax's cm10 for a while, I returned to the stock cm7 build (cybix, I believe...) cause I like the 15 hour battery life I get from it. Anyways, not the point...
My next phone will still be a Motorola. There, I said it. Why? Cause I like buying a phone from a company that's literally right next door. I know they are all made in China, but Moto's headquarters are basically 6 hours from where I live.
I've owned 3 Motorola phones now. They've all had really good radios and been stable and reliable. Granted the Electrify is my 1st smart phone. I've been in places where 3 people around me with Samsung or HTC phones have little or no signal, and my Moto is fine. It's also a good size for my hands, it fits in my palm, it fits in the car's cupholder, it's not garmungus like a lot of the new phones are becoming, but it's not iPhone small.
I like the phone, I dislike that Moto made a (sucky, yes) decision to not release any ICS/JB goodness for it, but that's how business works. They make more money by selling the masses a new phone rather than supporting the old ones. I'm not up for replacement until July of next year, but I probably won't replace my Electrify then either so long as it's still working. The specs are still pretty top-end and I suspect they still will be through 2013.
Thanks for letting me add a (hopefully) positive review on the Photon/Electrify board. It's great being able to lurk around here and learn stuff. :highfive:
I guess I'm in the minority also. This has been the best phone I've ever had, I'm unlocked, and can run whatever I want. I recommended this phone to everyone I know on sprint. It just works
CodeNamed JellyBean MoPho
Nothing wrong with that.
Is there actual proof that the radio or antenna is actually better? If it truely does get better signal across the board. I'm on board. But I need hard evidence

Based on my own use I think it's better than most. I get a strong signal everywhere, including the marginal-coverage areas.

I liked my photon while i had it, but was VERY frustrated with the lack of support. First Android phone i've ever owned that didn't get updated to a new version of android. I can confirm the signal is a little better as my g/f now rocks my photon and i'm pimpin' a S3 I picked up off contract, but it's marginal really. Photon still has pretty good specs, but i can attest, the S3 is FAST and the big hd screen is pretty nice. Also, the thickness of the phone is shocking compared to my photon. Oh, and one of the best things about it is the unlocked bootloader out of the box. Had CWM installed and rocking a custom ROM within an hour of buying the phone. Based on the raw deal Motorola stuck us with, i most likely will not own anymore of their products. This is coming from a home with a photon and two Motorola Xoom's. Build quality is fantastic, support sucks a fat one except for the Xoom's ofcourse..

From my experience in selling the phone it does have one of the best radios out there. At least better than the GS2 and the most HTC devices that were comparable spec. I can't really say much for the newer devices as sprint network issues have worsened since the photon went End of life.
I just moved to Moto from iPhone (i know Im a shame to the android community), before that i had samsung and htc.
At&t has spotty service where i live, but the atrix gets service better than the other phones. Im so happy with the service i get with this phone.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
the electrify is a great phone and all. only when unlocked really. but it's done the job. i wouldn't say moto gets the best signal. my htc desire actually gets an equal to slightly better signal. so htc makes good phones to i'm testing out samsung tomorrow with the note ii. i hope it's as good as moto and htc.
i will never own another moto though. not after the update fiasco and locked bootloader situations. if i can't touch my own phone. then i don't want it. mainly why i'm moving to the note ii. so much freedom!
Moto build quality and signal quality are the stuff of legend. I don't know that hard evidence exists to prove it, though.
I live way out in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T don't provide service here. Their service is known to be spotty in the cities like Greenville, New Bern, Jacksonville, etc. Between them, if you have signal at home, generally you have US Cellular. Even with US Cellular, I have signal issues. With a Samsung or HTC, the phone has to be in the window. For the most part, so does the Motorola Electrify, but it can get service (1 bar) at the computer, in bed, or in an extreme case, the bathroom (typically a Faraday cage). So it is a little stronger. And Apple uses Samsung parts, so for the sake of argument I can say Apple=Samsung WRT signal.
Another fun anecdote (since that's all we've got). 2007. Went to visit my mother in California. A state that doesn't even know what US Cellular is. My wife and I have Kyocera KX-5 Slider Remix dumbphones. My mother says "your carrier is who now?". Anyway, we get into town, we have some Round Table (hands down the best pizza I've had), the next morning she wants to take us into the mountains to go visit my nephew. Long story. Anyway, we're out of town. East of San Francisco. There's a city after you're well out of the San Francisco metropolitan area, starts with a C, I think. We stop there for burgers and fries. Another hour, we're in the mountains, middle of nowhere. My mother decides she needs to call somebody. (Probably call ahead.) Takes out her LG flip phone, on Verizon. No Signal. My wife and I check our phones -- we both have 5 bars. She borrows my phone, the call connects, she gets great call quality, no drop, no static. To this day she thinks we have satellite phones like in that one Jurassic Park movie, that get service in the jungle. It's pretty funny. A friend of mine who has worked for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint tells me that what US Cellular lacks in phone selection, they more than make up for in signal coverage, usually due to roaming agreements with other CDMA carriers. Since US Cellular does not carry the iPhone, I can safely say that Android goes places that iPhone cannot.
OP, you're okay with me. My wife is staying with Motorola as well, and can't understand why I hate 'em now, especially as I got my phone unlocked and running the OS I want. She only upgraded because her last phone was a bona fide piece of sh!t (Samsung Acclaim... 160MB RAM). She will probably use the Electrify until it breaks. 8 months later she has only changed the wallpaper. Unrooted, locked, running Blur Home as the launcher. I put Holo Launcher up there and she didn't like it, made me put it back, haha.

On GSM signal strength, my Sony Ericsson Naite is much better than Photon. Call drops are frequent on Photon. On 100$ Naite you can even make GSM video calls where all Androids and Iphones fails.

you made that up, there is no such thing as good pizza west of Chicago
My unlocked Electrify has been a wonderful phone for me and I will keep it for a long while. That doesn't mean I will buy another Motorola though. Me and Motorola are over forever. I had the Desire (upgraded to 2.2) and the Mesmerize (upgraded to 2.2 then 2.3) before and I should have stuck with Samsung. I now use the Electrify and the Galaxy S3. My S3 has already received 2 updates and Jellybean is coming. Samsung for life.
I believe management of Motorola Mobility was screwed up since the takeover; probably lack of leadership and no clarity whatsoever from anyone at the top..
The recent transfer of Soni from Google shows that Google has decided to get serious about MM.
In terms of devices, they have started by cleaning house. EOL most phones, free up labor to concentrate on current & newer devices and creating the BL unlock program.
MM is trying to get back on track.
But for me, its useless; too little, too late.
Next device will definitely not be from Motorola.
Most likely the Note II (not that Samsung is friendly to developers either); but its just a beast of a phone.

Yeah, go on telling yourself that. Northern California can keep its pizza secret.
I'm actually a big fan of both Chicago deep dish and Brooklyn wide slices. Round Table is nothing like either of them. On one hand they're just a fancy Pizza Hut or Dominoes, but on the other, they use top quality ingredients and have great recipes that justify them costing 2-3 times more than them.

MM is trying to get back on track...

I'm hoping they have their house in order by the time I decide to update. If they don't by then, perhaps I'll start looking elsewhere.

Purchasing this weekend

Hey guys,
I'm going to be purchasing this device this weekend and just wondered how your experience has been and what carrier you are using.
Using AT&T, love the screen, love the awesome battery life, love how snappy the HAM2 is.

love it, use it with straight talk.
when my year is over, probably switch to using straight talk tablet and google voice/hangouts for half the price.
L03 top tier unlimited 45 a month on T-Mobile. Get the black one
Thanks for the info. Are you guys getting LTE with it? I'm considering going with Cricket because they have been bought by AT&T and have a large LTE coverage area here in Phoenix
I've had mine since mid July. It has changed my mind, on the issue of "flagship" specs....
I'm of the opinion now, that super duper specs, unless you are running some sort of 3d gaming, video editing or something
similar, is OVERKILL. I was surprised how snappy, lag free this device is, and how clear & bright "just" a 720p screen is.
I have had NO problems with mine. 100% stock, no root, no unlocked bootloaded, nothing. Different launcher (Nova prime).
Running Straight talk (at&t card). I use around 1500-2000 minutes talk per month, few hundred emails/month, maybe 10-20
photos/month, maybe 20-30 texts/month and it is EASY to get 2 days, sometimes I could if needed, squeeze 3 days out of it.
I came from a Note1, so the size wasn't an issue. I sat them both and it's the same width & depth, and about 1/2" taller, but I
went from a 5.3" to a 6.1" screen. Huawei knocked one out of the park, and it's one of the best kept phone device secrets on
the web. When you optimize the screen with the SOC, couple that with a tweaked OS and a huge battery, who cares about
kit kat...I LOVE it being so stable and no FC's.
I'm using mine on metro PCs and couldn't be happier, unlimited 4g LTE

Right on guys. I'm looking forward to getting mine and selling my Note 3, or might keep it for a backup. Not sure yet. My point of purchasing this is to get away from Sprint and their terrible service. I'm getting anxious now lol
Oh my......I did the same, Sprint sucks

True story. They wont even let me change my plan without upgrading a phone and spending more money.
Do you guys recommend the black or white one?
I would say black, i think the back cover has a better grip and doesnt scratch as easy as the white one.

I say black also, mostly just personal preference (I've had two white phones and somewhere down the line regretted white each time).
Plus as stated above the black one has a textured finish while the white one is glossier.
Ultimately personal preference will win out and that's exactly how it should be. You're gonna be happy with this device regardless. I honestly don't remember reading anyone's regrets over purchasing the HAM2.

White one with white/black trident cyclops case. It stays in the case so I have the case back rather than the phone back to hold on to and it is plenty grippy. Also the white black contrast theme matches the software look and is pretty classy. That's my personal preference though.

^^^ this totally. Bought mine direct from huawei in the final hours of their pre-sale release back in June. The 720p screen is no problem at all. In fact, I wouldn't want the current fad of HD screens due to their battery draw.
I also get 10hrs avg on-screen time, using screen brightness of 70-100% (lots of outdoor FL sunshine use). I use the internal 'Normal' battery saving mode, after having some app/notif issues on the other battery-save modes. I keep wifi on 24/7.
Currently using the $45 Straight Talk plan. Had wanted to use the Tmo $30 plan, but coverage inside my home was just miserable. Will keep hoping for some changes there, so I can switch back. But I have no problem with LTE speeds on att.
Snappiness is superb. I have just over 500+ apps and don't have any issues. I use all 9 home screens (Apex Launcher) covered with 95% widgets, not counting SwipePad and all my widget-pad use there. I use Apex+ for a launcher (but I use Nova+ on my old tab). Both equally as good. I think it's rebooted on me twice since June, and that was clearly me pushing the boundaries on using tons of widgets hidden in layers. And I push it to the limits!
You're allowed to 'disable' any app bloat, which wasn't much at all to my surprise. But I still disabled the few usual suspects - FB, GBooks/Music/etc, preinstalled Games, etc.
There's also network level control on each app. I believe that went away in KitKat (unless rooted), so I'm not so sure I'm pushing for that upgrade atm. Especially with the KK sdcard problems. I'm happy with what I have. Using a new 32gb inside for the 'default' storage.
Just want to root now for the Exposed module to change the puke-grey nav bar on the bottom to black. That's really the only thing that bugs me atm.
Was one of those in the early One+ rat race, but so glad I got fed up early on and someone on their forum mentioned the Mate2 back in June. I thought about it, then jumped on it last minute and never looked back.
Really, really happy with my Mate2. Hope you will be too!

Right on, yeah I went with Cricket here in Phoenix and it's the first time I have had constant LTE and I went from place to place yesterday. Even to Apache Junction and Queen Creek which we refer to as BFE here. When I had Sprint I was lucky to even get 3g and a cell signal out there. Had no issues yesterday on Cricket with this new device
