Rooted but not able to gain root rights - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my phone months ago but suddenly today I noticed when trying to make a backup with Titanium backup, a few weeks after my most recent backup, that the app lost it's root rights. Normally this wouldn't be a problem because when an app needs root access a pop-up display asks you if you want to grant or deny access. But since the pop-up wasn't showing up either I started searching on my phone for the superuser app. All settings seemd correct, also the premission manager which comes default with MIUI rom looked ok.
To keep the story short, I eventually found out that my phone lost it's root rights. Don't know why... perhaps a new kernel I tried the other day but even then it would be weird that my phone has suddenly unrooted.
So I tried rooting my phone again using Odin. I got all the confirmation messages I used to get after the rooting proces has completed so I re-ran Titanium backup. But this time after a few seconds I got a message onscreen that the root rights had been denied! I checked Superuser app and the log area showed me the same but I can't seem to find out why I keep getting this message instead of the regular Grant/Deny root access pop-up box.
I eventually even tried unrooting my phone. Then re-root using Odin including flashing of CWM touch and Superuser app. Still the same problem: every root based app I try (even typing "su" in the terminal) gets a toaster saying root access denied without even an option to grant or deny root access to this app.
What is happing with my SGS3 and how can I get my root access back to working state?

Already tried that but didn't solve my problem.

Anyone? Maybe the solution is in the "Unable to update SU binary" message Super SU gave me?

I would see that as the only solution too. But how do you suppose that I make a backup without a working Titanium Backup?

Try getting an older version of super user and then updating it.

I believe the Carbon backup app from Koush doesn't require root, and there are other ADB backup tools out there, just search.

Get Root Explorer and use that, or if you're not sure and need to make sure you have root access just download busybox from the market and it will check to see if you have root, that's a fast way to determine if your root access is functioning or not.

Nevermind, I used viperboy scripts and a reboot later and the bloatware is gone from the app drawer as well. I'm not sure if it was viperboy scripts or titanium backup that removed it from the app drawer but a reboot helped.

Running into strange issue.
Have complete root. Using root explorer, root user granted.
When i first go into the program I can set to R/W. However, once R/W is set and then I go into the system folder it goes back to R/O. If I back out to the first page it goes back to R/W.
It's very weird that it'll only stay R/W on some folders and not others.
Any ideas what might cause this?
UPDATE: I uninstalled root explorer and downloaded ES File Explorer. Gave ES root permissions, and hurrayyyy. I can delete the bloatware.

Miui 1.9.2.3- No Root!

Ok, I had been running miui v1.9.3.0 but it had too many glitches and bugs, so I downgraded to v1.9.2.3 and soon realized that titanium backup no longer works, due to no root access. I've gone into superuser and turned on the superuser permissions, i've tried reflashing, rebooting, using Odin and going back to stock and reflashing... everything! But whenever I use titanium backup, "no root access"! What happened?! Please, someone help...

remove everything and anything that relates to superuser. use rootexplorer or something and search it, and then remove everything, and then odin.
Then root using superoneclick or something like that.
That may do the trick.
maybe you had like a bad binary or something? idk

ADDITIONAL INFO: Also, the reason for this issue could be because I tried to update superuser with an app in the market and another bit of info is that although Titanium Backup and some other root apps don't work, SetCPU and a few other root apps do work. So I'm in a vey confusing situation.

Oh...
Uhm, a question, the stock odin files that you have, are they TOTAL stock? like no root? or is it one of the rooted ones?
Can you go back into the market, go into superuser, and try to uninstall it? or go into settings>applications> and then go into superuser and it should say like undo update or something? Maybe those can fix?
Has titanium backup been allowed superuser before? Has SetCPU been allowed superuser before? If it has been done before, that may be why some work and some don't.
Yes, they should be totally stock. I downloaded them from "s15274n". And also, I'm not sure if you're familiar with MIUI but it has its own version of superuser that comes with it that's different from the one downloaded from the market... So this is a very confusing problem... Also, Titanium did work before and I never had issues until I tried updating the SU bianary and busybox. It seems as if odin isn't cleaning up everything, but I'm not sure... I made a big mistake thinking that the market SU app could update MIUI's SU bianary and now I can't seem to truly start from scratch...
This is a feature, I assume, as MIUI will soon be preinstalled on phones (MI-One). All you need to do is go into the Super User app after flashing MIUI, hit menu -> settings (I think) and check to enable root.
No ODIN, no reflash, just that. It's not just the Vibrant, and I think it's the new norm for MIUI.
That's the thing though, I've already turned on superuser in it's settings. I'm not sure what to do...

he prob. Forgot to enable root permissions.
Actually, I did have root permissions enabled. But when I restored titanium and other root apps with miui's built in backup/restore utility I guess it just made them glitchy. Uninstalling and reinstalling all the apps that need root solved the problem. Thanks "boystuff"!

Yeah, post ICS. I saved root prior to ICS update. I guess the updated didn't format the system partition.
After ICS, ran rootkeeper and it installed root perfectly.
Thanks. I just downloaded it, ran it, appeared to "save" it, now I guess when I finally get ICS - I am on West Coast - I will open it and run it and restore root after ICS.

Sadly, it's not that simple. OTA Rootkeeper relies on being able to copy the su binary somewhere on the system and keep the special permissions intact. The permissions have to be set originally while running as root, which is why it requires a root exploit to get it set up in the first place. If you just tried copying a downloaded file on there, it wouldn't work.

Yep. Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, Sixaxis Controller. Root seems to be working fine after restoring with OTA Rootkeeper. Root Explorer is able to remount the file system, TiBu is able to backup and restore apps, and Sixaxis Controller is able to connect to my PS3 controller (although touch emulation is broken, as I mentioned).

Hello everyone!
This is my first post here; however, I am new to this tooting phones experience, and learning alot from this site. I have rooted my HTC thunderbolt properly and is working well; I also installed OTA rootkeeper and seems to work ok, the question I have is this: Now that I have OTA rootkeeper installed in my phone can I accept firmware updates from verizon without loosing my root??? Also, do I need to use ROM manager, and Titanium for backups????
Any help will be appreciated!

I'd recommend posting this question in the Q&A section of the Thunderbolt area of XDA, as they would be more familiar with your situation, and should be able to help you. Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1103

[Q] Root Question

So I have the HTC Evo 4G LTE and i upgraded to the 3.16 update. Ran QBKING77's root and unlock method and everything worked great, my question is, i was using the phone and ran my backup of titanium and after i did that it said that i lost root access, so i did the twrp recovery (2.4.1) and reset the phone to right after the unlock, i deleted the titanium backup i had and downloaded all my apps and settings again manually, If i use Root checker basic (one with a white background and hashtag with a green checkmark) it says i have root access, if i use Root Checker (with blue android) it says i do not, if i try to use titanium backup it says i do not have root, but every other root program i have works fine and says i have root access, ROM Toolbox Pro works just fine...how do i get Titanium Backup to work???
edit- this is the error i get with titanium backup: sorry, i could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again. This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command
What rom are you on?? Also you can try to update your su app from within the app or flash the su zip found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
to see if it will resolve the issue. Also what version of titanium backup are you using? You should have the option to hit the problems button and download a reliable version of busy box from within the titanium backup app. If not and your running a stock rom then download busybox from the play store, install latest ver and see if it helps.

Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Download busybox from the play store, run the app and get latest ver of busy box, clear data on tb, reboot, and see if you still get the error. If so try flashing the su zip from the link. If that's a no go I'd recommend backing up your data via other apps, making a nand & flashing a stock rooted rom.

It says it has access, says grant, but now the root checker basic i was using says i do not have access, restarting to see if i can change it, when i start SuperuserSU, it say i need to update the binaries and when i hit ok, it says installing and then operation failed and starts the program. As well, anything that has been granted access, a little black popup shell shows at the bottom of the screen real quick saying that super setcpu has been granted root access for the interactive shell?
I have tried two versions of busybox, busybox free which tells me there was a problem opening a shell with root access and then closes and i tried busybox installer which says device is rooted but when i hit install it says that instillation failed.
Im on the stock rom from the 3.16 update, everything i have read is that i would not be able to flash a rom because of compatibility issues and i the 3.16RUU is not available for download anywhere..and just FYI, still fairly new to rooting, but learning!
Thanks

No Dice, still getting dead android:
Unlinked all apps and unistalled Link2sd

I did use the Mass Storage script from this thread. It was installed via CWM. Could that be causing the problem? If so, what should I do to fix it?
Now I've gone and made a mess.
I didn't uninstall BusyBox, I only uninstalled the BusyBox installer APK. Now I can't reinstall that package to use it to remove the actual busybox binary. When I try to install Stericson's BusyBox installer from google play store I get "error downloading" RPC:S-5:AEC-0

Thanks, I'm all set now.
Here's what I did:
Installed a rooted V20D nandroid from the sticky thread
Installed BusyBox
Used Voodoo Rootkeeper to preserve root
Installed the OTA upgrade (clear data for Google Services Framework then check for update in the settings menu to force this)
Upgraded SuperSU binary
Restored Root (I might have done this before the SuperSU binary upgrade)
Let the phone fully update itself
Reboot into CWM
Make an initial backup
Wipe all data and cache
Make a clean backup for the next time this happens (per Nathan's advice)
Restore the initial backup
Perfect glad I could help.
