Aren't there any nice apps for android? - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Most android applications are so ugly and poorly made I cant even use them. I have spent all day looking for a simple note taking app. Evernote is too complicated, I'm looking for just a simple notes app. There arent any.
Look at iOS apps.

Theyre beautiful.
As opposed to android apps.
Thats a very basic look. No disrespect to the developers, but iOS apps seem to always be nicer. Is it the apple SDK?
This isnt just with notes apps. All apps have that same ugly style.
What apps are you using to make your phone look nice and modern?
Thanks

Niskay NY, nice. I'm near Albany.
I use the stock Tasks app.

I know tell me about it. Wouldn't you think the most selling mobile devices would have better app support.

Try out Color Note, not too complicated, looks alot like iOS; at least from the screen shots you posted, and it does apple one better - it has a note widget for your home screen.

Slide Notes look very polished: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mbile.notes
For Tasks, a really good app is "Tasks": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.teamtasks.tasks.paid
Both are well polished and elegant looking, while tasks is written with the modern ICS UI guidelines. Though Slide Notes isn't yet using the Holo design principle, it is still elegant and has good typography in my opinion. It doesn't have the sticky note widget though... You oughta search hard, but I admit I too had a hard time getting a good note taking app until I found Slide Notes.

Classic Notes Lite https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flufflydelusions.app.enotesclassiclite&hl=en
Google Tasks Incredible Lite https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.freethinkinc.tasks.lite&hl=en
Evernote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.evernote&hl=en

Anything that can sync within gmail, simplenote or Evernote. Or one that has an iOS app? I was hoping I could sync notes with my ipad. But it's not that important.
Thanks!

One of the few reasons why I like manufacturer skins is the apps that they bundle sometimes that are actually good and augument stock android. HTC notes is actually quite good and so is the tasks. Then sound recorder and FM (FM not available on this phone though) which stock android ignores somehow.
And on the side note, my old Droid x2 had a email client on gingerbread that was a god send. The stock gingerbread email client was god awful without any search function. The one moto packed was about as good as the one included in ICS.
There are a few gems in this phone too and a lot of turds. But it is sometimes worthwhile and sense is pretty smooth...

Does anyone else using the tasks app have duplicating tasks? When I create a task attached to my Google account and not a local one it syncs fine. If I edit the task, it duplicates. If I create a task on the web based Google account, it syncs to my tasks app one day earlier. I see other people on the evo posted about this but no one has mentioned it here. Has anyone else come across this bug? Only started using this app while on viper 2 also.

I don't know what it is about posting on here but my browser crashes each time I write something thorough. :|
Any who to be short and save myself from tossing this computer I've been talking with the Dev of Handcent [it's a sms/mms application] about making an experimental new build with a new UI.
I like using handcent because it shows the users photo next to there name and sub text underneath it from the last message sent.
And my idea for a new UI falls along the lines of the dev of Buka and Totem? And recently Radiant. At the home screen it has a gallery button and it has a sliding UI similar to the Ipod touch album chooser and HTC Hero's Album chooser as well.
What the Idea is it to make the contact photo like the album, and then place the users text underneath it.
I drew my own crude version of it below, [this is why I'm asking if you're good at photo shop, I clearly don't have the first hint on using it.] and I'll include the Ipod touch's UI

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
And just for some talk back what do you guys thing about this idea?
I personally see it like this:
Slide to select the users photo, then when it's set and locked on the user text falls down in an animated way then piles up correctly like the threaded text does.
Then to view someone else you'd select the photo and here is where my idea splits.
I'm not too sure if I'd like the screen to rotate in a 3d square like motion or just slide like the album covers.
Of course I know there's plenty work to be had about this and it would take a lot of CPU and for good contact photos it would have to be a place in handcent to assign them and not based off of the Google image you have since that can only be blown up and that makes it blurry.
And of course I am not a dev at all!
So if you'd like to make this image I'd appreciate it :]
And mind you the proportions of portrait and landscape.
And so far here is the work of some friends and forum people that have helped me along with this idea.
From "Konzern" Over at Android Community dot com.

well you made me smile. lol but i think that would be a really nice ui. hope to see it up here on the forums sometime soon!

I think thats actually a pretty cool idea for a messaging UI. I'll try to draft something up as well but one thing I would like to point out in the development of this is to also have an option for list selection. While this is cool for one or two conversations, if you have to scroll through many it "could" be annoying depending on how smooth the sliding between photos goes. Awesome idea anyway. I cant wait to see it.
I'm lovin the drawing. You should just use that

Well now that I have more time to type.
In my orginal email to the dev I also throgh that in as well.
I thought about it like how Google maps has the list selection at the bottom left corner.
But overall I think we all could be productive here and help the dev with a guideline of how we see it and be supportive :]
Or maybe he'll read here and pick and choose.
i removed the app tab because i realized its not supposed to be there lol
Here is my mock-up. I chose to do it in like the hand-drawn example above, with chat-room style texts instead of bubbles.

Just give me a name or email or what you want submitted.
I emailed handcent and they replied
"Hello, thanks for your suggestion, the new UI example is cool and something same as i think (but no implement ), i will let ui design view the thread first and add it to develop plan"
So don't run around expecting it, but it definitely could happen.
Am just pending on the OP of the image to give me some info so I can give him more credit.

all i have to say to that is... damn that looks amazing... i still thought the paper ui was a good one though, and that font man, that font.
but for real hettbeans, that is amazing and i would use whichever app implements that idea.
also to the ones designing this, you should pm or somehow alert rvg151 (the guy with the modded mms.apk) to this thread, and see if he can incorporate something like this into the standard mms.apk. that would be killer.

I've PMed it.
Well aside from getting that particular dev to do this, why not start an XDA project to see if any devs are interested in implementing that UI on a new sms app. It doesn't seem like the UI will see the light of day unless someone makes it happen. I gotta admit, its a shame since I do like the mockup UI created by hettbeans even though I'm not really a fan of iphone-esque design of coverflow.

Both of you guys, go download the Buka game demo and go to that gallery option and tell me if that can be implemented/was made for a messaging app you wouldn't want it lol.
I don't like the Iphone style either but when I saw it in that game and the color scheme I thought of Handcent and how awesome it would be.

I'm a big fan of UI uniformity. I think the proper thing to do would just be a row of side-scrolling thumbnils like what the Market used to have.

Espire Launcher. MiUi/iOS style launcher.

http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39...id-look-exactly-like-an-iphone/?tag=cnetRiver
With all the iPhone and iOS coverage recently, you might be experiencing a little iPhone envy. Sure, your Android phone already has many iOS 5 functions, but for some reason, the features just seem sexier on the iPhone.
To help you during this difficult time, we found a free app that makes your Android phone look and feel exactly like an iPhone. Actually, it's so believable, you might even forget about your iOS envy.
Espier Launcher replaces your default Android home screens with an iPhone-style interface.
Impressively enough, Espier even functions like an iPhone--swipe left to search your phone, create folders by dragging app icons over each other, swipe up to reveal the multitasking toolbar, and view notification counts on messages and missed calls.
You'll also find some things iOS lacks. For example, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, then swipe right to access helpful shortcuts to Wi-Fi, rotation lock, network settings, brightness, and volume.
Here are some tips for navigating Espier Launcher:
If you have an older Android phone, the interface might be a little laggy, but can be improved by tapping the menu button, Preferences, and unchecking animation effects.
To uninstall an app from the home screen, tap an hold an app icon, and hit the X.
To rearrange apps, tap and hold any app and drag the icons to the desired location.
Close running apps by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, long-press an icon, and tap the minus sign on any apps you want to shut down.
To make Espier Launcher your default interface, tap the home button, check the box next to "use by default for this action," and tap Espier Launcher.
Let's be honest--it's probably only a matter of time before Espier disappears from the Android Market. It's a blatant rip-off of Apple's mobile operating system, so don't expect it to stick around. Grab it now so you can enjoy the interface, even for just a while.

I agree i'm not much on the iOS look on the #teamandroid. But i've seen some post about it in the past and here it.
I Will say this. The launcher is SUPER smooth and works VERY well. It's coded right.
will i personally use it? most likely not. unless i want to mess with some one.
using it on my galaxy s. it's ok, but the MIUI launcher is better.
plus, it does a weird thing around all the icons...

Well I use MIUI ... which is somewhat like iOS. I was jus saying that cuz of the ignorance she displays: "Iphone-envy" LOL.
I put up with this EVERY TIME I GO OUT. Im at a table with all iphone users. They show off their features. im getting them ed hardy cases
Give it a bit of time to grow!
I mean, isn't Android all about customisation? Now we have satisfied both Android AND iPhone needs. All in one!
I mean, it has been in the Market for about a month. Yes, it might not be great. But, it is actually the only app I have seen that responds to user requests.
Give it some time and it will end up looking as good as the iPhone launcher itself.
Sure, Android is more Widgets. But, for people who do not actually use widgets, this is a GREAT app.
I like it but i want stick wit it over HTC sense

HUBS for Transformer Prime

Hey everyone! Hope you guys are enjoying your prime.
I've been very interested in HUBS for the android tablets and I've searched many places and some youtube tutorials but none of them seem to work 100%. I'm hoping someone can post a step by step tutorial on transformer prime ICS on how to make hubs for everyone who wants hubs on their prime.
Thanks!
P.S. I've looked around on the forums and I've found a couple hubs thread but none helped.
I'm not really sure what you're talking about as the threads I've looked at for hubs and the YouTube videos I've seen have been very informative. I set up a hubs layout the other week that I love. A few more tweaks and I'll be posting on the homescreens thread.
Perhaps you should be more specific as to what you've been having trouble with.
There is a topic, I think it's on the first page, with a awesome tutorial with lots of screenshots for ideias on original Transformer ''Themes and apps''

Holy crap this looks slick! And I thought spb had some nice eye candy. I'm def going to have to try this out. I wonder if there's a way to combine this layout with spb. You would lose the nice transition animations though which is a large part of the appeal.

Hey how did you get those app folders to pop up in the middle of the screen like that when you clicked those side icons?
One way to do it is to use folder organizer or app organizer, then use an invisible icon which you would place behind the widget. So when you touch the widget, you're really touching the icon underneath which brings up the apps. Hope that helps. Still trying to get mine all set up, very time consuming.

And here is the link for the whole album. I think I use some rather nice wallpapers. http://imgur.com/a/bJ106#0
For my personal use, I set it up with two things in mind.
It has to be functional. I'm an organization freak and so the different hubs would have to legitimately be useful and not just for design. For example, when I'm doing schoolwork The only things I see on my screen are applications I let myself use (and I further enforce this by combining Pomordroido and Tasker to kill any apps not seen on that screen).
Work well with two handed use. While it's kind of a moot point a majority of the time because my tablet is in the dock, when I do use it undocked I want to be able to access everything quickly. You'll notice that all of my buttons are on the left and right hand side of the screens, and all are clickable with either thumb, never having to lift my hand.
Apps I use to achieve this are ADW EX Launcher, Minimalistic Text, and Pure Calendar Widget.
I'll post a video of it sometime later; it's pretty slick. Funnily enough, I was already using the exact same transitions the guy in the video posted above used, so you already know how that looks.

[Q] TouchWiz-style Contacts/Dialer/SMS on AOKP?

I know most users are the reverse of me, but here's my puzzle.
I love AOKP in almost every way except... I really love the TouchWiz contacts/dialer (go figure). I use the swipe left to sms/right to call at least once a day. To the point that I went back to Shostock3 (and its battery-heavy ways) so I could have this core functionality back.
In the stock SGS2 thread, someone asked the question of whether there's a contacts/dialer replacement that acts like TW contacts/dialer and nobody responded.
So I'm asking here... Does what I'm looking for exist?
EDIT: refined title
EDIT2: Further refined title to include SMS

Awesome, thanks! Now I just need an messaging replacement that also has the swiping feature. Any thoughts?

Sorry, I don't understand. exDailer has both swipe features by default, and you can fiddle about with certain behaviors under the Advanced tab to make their contracts have swipe as well.

Try exDialer in the store; it's related more to MIUI but it has the swipe feature you're looking for.

When I open a contact in exDialer to SMS, it opens the default messaging app... But if I start out in the messaging app and want to call the person, then I am SOL. The nice thing about the TW integration is that any time you interact with a contact (from any of the three apps) is that the swipe left/right thing works.
As a result, I am now looking for a messaging replacement app that can also do the swipey thing.
Far as I know there isn't anything like that for AOSP, but if you DO find something that works the way you want it to let us know.

Not sure I get it. Are you talking about the AOSP Messaging app? There's a call button in the title bar. Furthermore, if you press on the contact icon, a popup appears, and you have the option to do a lot more than call them. You can send an email, map their address, etc.

You could try flashing shostock3 (that's what I'm on) and backing up the dialer with Titanium (and the messaging & contacts apps, whatever you need) and then reflashing your current rom and restoring the app without data. There probably wouldn't be any data to restore at that time anyway.
But, I have no idea if that will work, or if it will give you problems or even brick your device (which I doubt would happen), but there was a thread where someone did something like that with the Touchwiz task manager. I think they were running a TW ROM on an N7 and went back to a AOSP ROM and it worked perfectly.
Good luck. I personally am a big fan of touchwiz, especially with a nexus style blue theme to the toggles and other system colors instead of green. Samsung has some pretty awesome user friendly stuff like the swipe to call/text, the quick toggles, even the s planner calendar app stands out.

Yeah, I understand that functionality exists, but that's not what I'm looking for. It's less elegant (for me). I'd rather have a certain specific one-touch experience rather than the two-click experience.
And TouchWiz apks, as far as I've read, don't work on non-Samsung kernels.

5 Productivity Apps You Should Check Out

5 Productivity Apps You Should Check Out
Do you ever run into one of those really useful apps where you're like "I really wish I had known about this earlier" but now it's too late because you moved to New Zealand and you're not fitting in? Productivity apps are everywhere. When you go to the Play store you'll see all of the usual suspects like Word, Adobe Reader, Dropbox and some others that I'm sure you are familiar with. I have a few productivity apps that I use regularly and they aren't very popular. You wouldn't really find these apps unless you're specifically looking for that exact type of app on the Play store. So I will recommend that you check out these five apps that you've probably never had the chance to try before.
Chromer
This is a brilliant app that will always be one of the first things I download on any of my new Android devices. So here is the thing. When you're browsing twitter and you click on a link that takes you to an external site, twitter will use the System WebView browser. Since this is not Chrome you will not have your saved passwords, autofill info, default apps or any of the personalized features of Chrome. This will happen is most apps that use a browser to display external links. Chromer solves this issue by forcing apps to use Google Chrome instead of System WebView. This is a fantastic app and fixes a lot of frustration caused by in-app browsers.

Tiny Apps (multiwindow)
After becoming addicted to windowed apps from my Sony Xperia device, it's difficult to use other devices when I can't run my Small Apps. Tiny Apps is the next best thing, offering a wide range of basic apps that run in windows on top of your current tasks. Each window can be moved and resized to your liking. There is no limit to the amount of Tiny Apps that you can run at once, so you'll be able to truly multitask. An app like this will be most effective on a large high resolution screen.

Coffitivity
Just a little ambient noise app to silence the demons in your head. You're all familiar with these types of apps by now and there are plenty to choose from. The reason I personally use this one is because it's the only one that I've used that will continue to play audio on top of my music from my media player. This allows me to quietly play music as I listen to the mumbling of strangers in a coffee shop, as I pretend that all of these people are my friends and really enjoy my company. Maybe they're saying nice things to me like complimenting my shoes or inviting me to dinner. It's a really nice feeling and tends to make me more productive.

Sunrise Calendar
Calendars are garbage. They are literally the most complicated apps I've ever used. 99% of the time I attempt to figure one out but end up uninstalling it within a few minutes. The only calendar app that I've actually been able to use is Sunrise Calendar. This is an app put together by Microsoft and they tend to make really good software. The features of this calendar aren't what make it stand out but rather it's the ease of use. If you find yourself getting frustrated with calendar apps, give this one a try.

Snowball - Smart Notifications
I like this app so much and cannot recommend it enough. Snowball turns your notifications into much more than just an alert. With this app you'll be able to respond to many different types of notifications without having to launch the actual app that they're coming from. Your notifications will also be sorted by importance and the most important notification will always be on top. If you get a lot of notifications then you're going to really enjoy this app.

Productivity apps are in a category that is so extensive that you wont always find the best apps for you. So post some of your favorite productivity apps in the comments.
You know Sunrise calendar will eventually be killed, Microsoft is integrating it all into Outlook.

Most likely. Probably a good reason to get it now before they remove it!

The app will be useless without the back end cloud services though. It's not most likely either, Microsoft have confirmed this is happening.
I would like to say thanks for Snowball. I like it very much.
Thank's very Good apps =D>

Among these 5 apps, I have been using Snowball for last few days. Seems to me a good and useful app.
Snowball & Chromer looks promising. I'll give it a try.
It's so amazing and beautiful app man
What I chose was Chromer & Tiny app
You have wonderful threads Sir
Keep it up
Snowball s awsm.... Made it easy...
Thanks for directing me towards Chromer and Snowball. Both are great finds and do a great job.
I don't have any apps to add to the list, as I don't generally try out new apps, but I'll certainly update here if I find any which are worthy
Thank you for Chromer ! it's really useful !
thanks got chromer looks cool
Thanks for the list! The chromer link leads to making a new thread btw.
Chromer seems to be working wel with Jswarts CAF Chromium build.
I don't like snowball's new notification UI. I'd rather use it's heads-up notification UI and functionality with the default notification pull-down UI. I'm trying Sunrise and Chromer right now and they seem very nice to me. Thanks!
thanks
Thanks man, I have been using chromer for a while now
Gonna try out snowball
Also
There's a new app being released by the old es file explorer developer called fooView in XDA. It's still in alpha but it's a good productivity app.
Give it a try
is there anything for firefox same like chromer? coz i dont like chrome...
thanks snowball will try...thanks to gesture can use both system UI and snowball too.
Does sunrise calendar actually gives you the sunrise and sunset time?
I thought it was about this but it doesn't seem to be the case. Too bad, it would have been a great feature, knowing at first glance if it is day or night is not only great for planning outdoor activities but also gives you an intuitive sense of time.
Snowball looks good. going to test it
