Front-Facing Camera Quality - HTC Droid DNA

Is it just me, or is this front-facing camera like a Game Boy Color's camera?
Don't get me wrong people, I am on my second DNA and absolutely love it (waiting for Cyanogenmod) but this front camera is some garbage.

I never user font cameras. It might be cause it's adv wide angle camera. It looks really weird

Quality should be pretty good.

I think the quality from the front facing camera is fantastic. I've been using it with my friends on Snapchat a lot, and the improvement on the Galaxy Nexus is awesome.

I'll say this front facing camera isnt all that as well. Hell, the camera itself doesnt look too good either. I pulled out my rezound and took pictures side by side, flash/no flash, and the dna has a lot more noise and grainy over the rezound. Front and rear camera...

Its been like that since the EVO LTE came out the grainy effect . I actually likev the ffc but it is off putting to see that much its new to me but I see your point I think mods will clean that up like with the EVO hopefully

The issue is probably compression and higher ISO, people said the same thing about the One X until camera mods came out to fix the issues.

I'm considering buying the DNA for my girl for christmas. Any of you mind throwing up front camera pictures so I can compare with my One X and GN2?

Garbage? It shoots decent quality 1080p video and 2.1MP stills. It's better than the iPhone 5's front camera in every respect. What did you expect, a full frame dSLR sensor? Images are extremely better than the front camera on my old Thunderbolt.

I would hope the Italics are true.
I have the DNA as well and can say that the front-facing camera (with good lighting) is excellent. Colors seem a tad bit washed, but that is a very MINOR criticism.
However, I would not go as far as to say it is better than the iPhone 5's. I despise Apple and its stranglehold attitude, but the front-facing camera is not superior.

[Q] mms quality and camera quality

Hey,
Just got my atrix today after huge fiasco with att stores. Anyway, so far i love it this thing is blazing fast compared to my captivate and the gps works =).
My one gripe is the camera quality, everything looks washed out almost like there is a film on the camera lense that can't be removed. The same thing applies to when i recieve an mms picture. The quality looks so bad that it's hard to even tell what it is sometimes
Anyone have any workarounds or tips on taking photos?
Yeah, noticed the same thing, especially coming from an iPhone 4, the photo AND video quality on the Atrix look washed out and grainy. Hopefully it would be a software fix.
The only solution so far is just to take photos in the 5MP resolution. the 3MP and Widescreen (which is like 3.?) are horrible.
was just fixing to post how horrible the camera and video quality is compared to the captivate! ughhh... i hope it is fixable via a software tweak this is nasty. like dirty sand

Correct, I love the phone but MMS coming from iphone 4 purely suck!
Also coming from iPhone 4, setting the camera to 5mp does seem to help some for sure though.

aye it looks fine when not comparing it to anything. But hands down the ip4 camera is far superior and even my captivate camera looks better, meanwhile they're all 5mp

Evo 3D camera vs Evo 4G (Evo 1) cam

How do u guys think the Evo 3D still pictures will compare in quality to the original Evo?
I know megapixels isn't everything, and of course I'm talking only about 2D stills, but I'm wondering if the still pictures from the 3D will be better

I disagree. The Evo 1's camera is adequate and even better than my 4 year old camera. I take pictures exclusively with it now and they look pretty damn good.
Granted, I'd never spend $1500 on a freaking camera and you might be one of those "photographer" types (i put that in quotes because I don't consider that a real profession, merely a hobby that people get paid for) who believe that an 8mp cell phone camera should look like an 8mp nokia whatever-x5000. It's a cell phone, the camera is more a convenience. Considering 5 years ago, pictures with a cell phone looked like an 8-bit video games, I'd say they're making fantastic and amazing headway on itty bitty tiny mobile cameras.
On that note, since it's a year later and technology has improved, the Evo 3d really should have a better camera than an Evo 4g. Especially since the camera is a key feature in the new hardware.
From what I've seen in review videos (also taking into account that I'm not getting the full experience through a camera), the pictures have a pretty good quality, but I'd have to see them in person to accurately judge them.

Because MP have nothing to do with quality? It's how big it can be printed out, and to be honest you can't print a 3D picture, so yeah.
They did however mention that the cameras have a CMOS sensor (the sensor is what creates quality, MP have nothing to do with it) so I have extremely high hopes for this camera. If it does what I'm expecting it'll be my upgrade path most likely.
HTC usually either has hits or miss on the camera. Well just have to wait and see.

Two 8mp images per 3d picture is probably why. 5mp will take enough space as it is.
That and the thing is... there really is no way currently to have a "great" 8 mp camera on a phone, with a lens/ sensor that small.
Yea the reason for 5mp instead of dual 8mp has to do with image/video file size more than likely.
As for the Evo 1 camera, is have to say its the first phone camera I even considered replacing my real camera with. I have a 12mp ~$200 Sony camera that I never use. 4x6 prints look just as good on both. The Sony handles low light better, but its not worth carrying an extra device

My 2cents on this:
Photography is an art, just like painting, tattoos, piercings, acting (stage and TV) and have all been around for as long as history has been written (except for the acting on TV of course). But to talk about getting paid for a hobby, lets now include sports (ALL Sports) and these are also considered "hobbies" but these people get paid more than doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. You don't complain about them though.
About the camera, like said before....its a phone, 5MP is awesome AND IT HAS TWO. For daily use, it should/will get the job done. If your a "professional" D) then you would not even consider using the phone for your work. It's called convenience and it's why you pay $700 for a phone that can play movies, pictures, search the web, play low quality game (that can be addictive), TEXT, have a camera and flashlight with you at all times, GPS (all this on a relatively small screen) and I guess make a call.
Don't discriminate!
I'm a massive fan of the EVO and am pre-ordering the 3D immediately. That being said, the EVO 1 pictures aren't as good as the Iphones. In Outdoor, sunny situations they are excellent but indoors they suck compare to the iphone. Also, the flash handling really is garbage, I'm always trying to adjust the white balance to account for it or take my picture slightly further back etc etc. It's just ****ty and then I see my brother iPhone 4 pics using OOTB settings taking the same stupid picture of our family at the table and its way better.
I would really like to see some information stating that the CMOS sensor is 2x as good...it certainly better be!!
Another note, the iPhone 4 video is a WORLD above the EVO in lower light. It embarrassing. I brag about my phone but then can't use the video from a basketball game because its indoors and again...brothers iPhone videos look pretty good.
A side note, can't stand apple and their draconian koolaid they sell all the schmucks on
Camera Quality
I've found that when were dealing with pictures in natural lighting, the results are absolutely AMAZING, but when it comes to low light, darkness and requiring the flash, that is when the coloring was off and blurry etc. i would expect the same from the new camera just as basically every phone cam i've seen.

Hey! Pic quality will not likely improve on 3D fair?

3 D will be interesting and all but actual clarity, resolution etc etc will not improve I assume given the 5 megapixels?
Thanks
That's not a safe assumption. MP don't necessarily correlate with picture quality, at least not MP alone. Look at other phones with 5mp cameras that take better pics (iPhone, epic). HTC claimed to have improved the camera despite the lower resolution ...
Tapa tapa tapa
MP has nothing to do with quality. MP is strictly a rating to measure resolution. For the average user MP only matters if you wish to crop out a small portion of your picture. Otherwise anything over 5+ isn't a big deal, in my opinion at least
Considering the phone is being featured as a camera phone I sure hope they improved the quality.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Mp does not really have anything to do with pic Jesse is right by that also it is being marketed as a 3d cam phone soooo idkkk
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Its all about the CMOS sensor. Trust me, 5 MP is more than enough. You could easily blow up a well taken 5mp picture to a 5x7 or 8x10. If you need to do an immense amount of cropping...MP might come in handy but thats about it. Plus...a higher MP photo typically takes up a lot more space.
I really want to see them do some interesting things with the camera, like quick shot mode using both cameras or HDR etc.
This is all great to hear. I've come to use my camera a lot with my Evo for various things.
Look forward to the dedicated button too!

Selfie quality

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the LG G6 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So far on the demo in my store, the FFC is hazy and unclear, but that's the only thing so far I'm not particularly fond of about the G6...
Front camera has been really good so far. Only have taken a couple of pics but they have been good.
Sent from my SM-N920T using XDA Labs
Nothing to write home about. A little worse than the G4 in terms of image quality imo, but the wide angle probably makes up for that in usability. If you take a lot of selfies and the quality matters to you, not sure this would be my first phone choice.
well my G6 only lasted 3 hours, my note 5 took better pics with front and rear, the G6 I had flew performance wise but the camera is not very good, wish it would have taken better pics and I might have kept it.

I don't know why the 5-star rating.
Every comparison video I saw of the G6 FFC showed, that it has the worst result of all (vs P10,iP7,GS8,OP3T).
Anyone can post for the compare picture that taken by G6 and other new top devices?
The selfie camera is poor to say the least. The front camera on my S6 seems a lot better sadly..
Grainy and not focused no matter how much or little light there is.
The worst Selfie camera I ever seen on a 500 dollars flagship. Big **** omg, low light pic are ****, blured with grain, and high light photo quality is bad. 100% ****, wtf is this sensor ? I so disappointed..
le grand angle est plus utile que le selfie quand on habite près du Puy de Dome
Weird very little issues here. Low light sucks % but other than that I'm happy
yeah it's extremely blurred imo! so much smudge.

Not exactly new anymore. I picked up a oneplus 3t and couldn't be happier.
And I thought G4 had a bad selfie camera.. what a disaster.
Use the rear wide angle camera for selfies, don't know why LG dropped from 8mp to 5mp. LG V30 front camera 5mp seems better than the LG G6.

Why is the front facing camera so awful?

I'm comparing it to my old HTC 10 and the quality is night and day. It's blurry/fuzzy, the colors are washed out. It reminds me of the quality of my old cheap webcam from 10 years ago.
Because you didn't turn off all the skin toning and skin lighting junk that's on by default. I was able to shoot selfies with more detail than any model would ever want to see on themselves so I know it isn't the camera's fault.

My testing and photos say otherwise. Like I said, way more detail in the selfies I've taken than most people who sit for me would ever want to see in a photo. It's not the camera.
Hey, coming from a Nexus 6 ... this is a major improvement.
Okay let's settle this, 5 mp camera is not the best out there, especially compared to iPhone 8's new front facing camera or even Samsung's I guess, although I can only tell based on what I see on internet, as I don't own them. Makes me wonder why it's so hard to create a perfect phone? I mean you did almost everything perfectly right, put a damn 8 mp camera with ois or whatever and hit a home run, why did they choose this front facing camera is beyond my understanding
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Because the reality is that in order to actually see a doubling of resolution, you actually have to quadruple the megapixel count. So to see twice the detail of a 5mp sensor, you would have to use a 20mp sensor. 20mp at selfie cam size would be insane. The cameras that are using 16mp selfie cameras (such as the HTC U11) are actually using the main shooter from the V30. But to squeeze that extra sensor in with OIS would require more room and produce more heat which would cause issues with amp glow on your other sensors. Digital imaging can be a real P.I.T.A. even with dedicated cameras. Cellphone cameras are a miracle that they even produce anything worthwhile. And that's usually due to being conservative in your approach to what hardware you use.

Thanks! I already learned something interesting today Is that the reason why the Nokia 8 and the HTC U11 have larger bezels as well in order to have enough room to tackle these technical challenges?

Yes, bezels really only exist to hide hardware that they haven't figured out how to downsize or place elsewhere. To get tiny bezels, you have to use tiny camera, earpiece, and proximity sensor hardware or just get rid of them. OIS units make things much bigger as you have to put a ring of motors around the object you're stabilizing. Earpieces/speakers take up a lot of space. I'm guessing Google used the headphone jack space to add more battery and the second speaker, with the second speaker adding more bezel. Proximity sensor is probably the smallest thing in the bezels. Display drivers used to be a big contributor (Moto 360 flat tire was a display driver if I remember right) but with the modern OLED panels they just, er, tuck 'em.
Not passing judgement on the quality of the selfie cam, but I notice that as with the main camera, it too has a "wide angle" setting.
But with only the single camera, necessarily this means that the non-wide setting is digitally zoomed, plus I'd bet there's heavy software correction going on to get rid of all of the wide angle distortion. Perhaps that's asking too much from a 5 MP sensor?
However, I rarely take selfies, and when I do, I'm often trying to squeeze in the other people that are with me, or some scene in the background, so maybe I'll find the native wider angle appealing? Hard to tell in-store with all the florescent lighting.

I've never taken an awful photo with the front facing V30 camera. I really don't understand how anyone thinks it's awful.
Sent from my LG-H931 using Tapatalk
From my experience, it only does poorly in low light, that is, compared to 2017 flagships. I don't think it's nearly as bad a many claim it is.
If you look at a lot of of comparisons with the between the likes of the note 8, iphone x and pixel 2, it holds up really well. The biggest difference is really between the pixel 2 and pretty much every other flagship front facer, it has by far the best front facing cam on the market by a good margin imo. The v30 front cam can look really good, is just dosen't produce quite as much detail as the others, and maybe lacks in dynamic range a bit.
If you turn on flash in low light, you see better results. It’s not real flash obviously but I’ve been impressed when it gets it right.
maybe youre ugly lol jk
