Confusion about the term 'unlocked'? - HTC Droid DNA

Hey all...
A friend of mine would be visiting the US next month. I was thinking of ordering the DNA at a full retail price (obviously). But this term of 'unlocking' confuses the hell out of me.
What does it actually unlock? From what I read, it is already unlocked and can be used with ANY SIM around the world. So, my friend just walks in to a store, buys the phone and gets it here in Delhi, India for me, I pop in my SIM card and everything just works fine.
Is that right?
Do I need to be aware of something that might not work. There is no 4G here yet, but I use 3G. Will that work?
Everything from 3/2G, MMS, calls, Msgs...everything will work just fine right?
THANKS!

Most of the unlocking in the DNA forum is referring to the bootloader. Since Verizon is the Anti-Christ of cell phone carriers, they don't allow phones to be sold with an unlockable bootloader. However an exploit was discovered that allowed HTCdev (website to that is used to unlock non-Verizon/AT&T HTC phones) to see the Droid NDA as a different phone and then unlock it.
The phone is GSM unlocked out of the box. Meaning you should be able to put your SIM in, plug in your carrier's APN settings, and theoretically be able to use 2G/3G/MMS/SMS/Calls. However, I'm not sure what frequencies carriers in India use for GSM and if the Droid DNA supports those frequencies.
There are some CDMA carriers in India I believe. I don't know what steps need to be taken to use the Droid DNA on them or if that is even possible. (I don't think it is)
(if I did a bad job of explaining it, or got some details wrong, someone please correct me)

Thank you sir for your reply...however, I didn't get the last line about CDMA bit. Is the phone CDMA or GSM. I don't care for CDMA devices as of now as I am never going to switch. Also, is there a way to find out about the frequencies you mentioned...?
And, what about the price. What should my friend tell the rep? As in, wha phone is she looking for, locked, unlocked, carrier unlocked?
thanks a lot for your reply.

Thanks again...doesnt really matter. Im and will always be GSM...Would you what it is priced at, an unlocked version?

The retail price is $599 plus tax, and what carrier do you use in India ? Each carrier has different frequencies and the DNA might or might not support you specific carrier frequencies

Sent from my RaZr on MIUI.

I searched Google and found that Vadafone India uses 900/1800 Mhz and the DNA supports 850/900/1900/2100 MHz. Looks like it will work on 2G only.

CDMA and GSM

I am always confused between CDMA and GSM...
Why a 4 band phone ,Evo 3d will not work in Europe?
BTW I am searching to buy one at Ebay. the search shows only Spirit branded phones. do they work in Europe (GSM)?
What is ESN clean or Bad ESN? Whats is the meaning of "unlocked" and if i buy a locked one can i unlock it by my self?
Thank You

I'm far from the expert so I'll give your questions my best shot and maybe somebody else with more experience on GSM can fill in some of the gaps.
bad/clean ESN only applies to CDMA. CDMA does not use a SIM card. once a CDMA phone has had its ESN marked as bad, it will not operate on that carrier. example, sprint (only CDMA network) evo 3d, the owner doesnt pay his bills, they mark the ESN as Bad for that device. if he sells the evo 3d, it can't be activated on sprint's cdma network. if you want to activate it on another CDMA network, like metropcs, it is doable, but sometimes considered a legally *gray* area.
"unlocked" in regards to the carrier of the device only applies to GSM type devices. on GSM type devices, once they has been "unlocked" they will operate on any GSM carrier.
i'm not about the band count, i.e. 4 band GSM. i would suggest looking at which frequencies are used in those bands and matching them up by frequencies and GSM/CDMA. as your profile is marked albania, i think most of europe uses GSM so CDMA will probably not be useful for you.
hope that helps some of the questions!
thank you... you were very clear.
still searching for the last question. If i buy a locked GSM phone, can i unlock it here by myself or i have to buy unlock code?
Well, doesn't all phones come unlocked in Europe anyway? Locking applies to GSM phones, and I've always thought only north American carriers do that. For example, if you, living in Europe, wanted the infuse 4G which is locked to ATT in America, you would need to unlock it to use it. Moreover, you must make sure the phone's frequencies match your carrier's. If I'm not mistaken, I think unlocking an Android phone is similar to rooting it. It's a different process all together, but its something you would do on your own.
Before Android tho, you simply need to call your carrier, tell them you're traveling overseas and you wanna use your phone there, and they'll give you the unlock code. Use some special commands to bring up the carrier unlock screen, input the unlock code, and bam, you're good to go.
I don't know if you still need an unlock code with Android phones, but if you want it, you would get it from the carrier of the phone.
You won't see any unlocking tutorials for the EVO 3d in the forums for the obvious reason that its cdma phone in America. But I'm sure once its released on Tmo-us, then there'll be a method.

UK/EU release this year?

I see this phone isn't getting released in the UK/EU first, which is..... different!
I would like to know if there are plans to release this device or a similar HTC device anytime this year in the UK/EU region.
I hope HTC it will be available for sale before the beginning of December
I would rather have had the Droid DNA/J Butterfly instead of the One X+ in the UK.
You would think that with HTC's recent financial results, that they would be looking to release this highly anticipated device in many markets as possible.
Does anyone know if the Droid DNA will work on GSM 3G HSPA networks? Obviously the LTE wont work.
I wonder if any of the Frequencies Vodafone or O2 are going to use are the same as the US ones? I do remember reading it somewhere, and I don't think they are the same.

The problem is not the LTE, it is the basic network of the phone. The Verizon network is not compatible with any European network - they use a completely different system as the base which is not GSM compatible. Same reason the Nexus 4 "world" phone works pretty much everywhere except on their network.
Until HTC make a model with different radio chips (GSM standard) this phone will only be for Verizon and a couple of Japanese networks.

From Verizon's DNA specs list:
CDMA1x/EV-DO Rev A, LTE/DO Rx diversity
Global Network: GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz), UMTS (850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz)
Since it has GSM, will it be possible to use in Europe or Australia?

Yes.. It's just a matter of whether or not it is unlocked out of the box like the Rezound was (Limited at first before update). Or sim locked like previous droids.

Thank you for posting this... I hate when people (read: nexus161) give outdated facts based on the way the tech ran several years ago... vzw has released several devices with a quad band antenna in the past several years. The gsm bands listed are frequencies that all gsm providers currently use at least one of so the answer to the original question is yes, in theory. I'm assuming the international bands are unlocked so there should be no issue using it with a gsm provider, however I'm not sure how vzw has played this in the past so I can't speak to how this will work in practice. My guess though? Similar to the rezound. Locked for first 6-8 months, then an unlock will roll out in an update later.
That's great, so it will work over here. I'm not bothered about 4G yet as its only in a few cities.
I'm new to this whole Verizon CDMA unlocked thing. Can I use a US T-mobile SIM card and pop it into the SIM slot and it will work? What size SIM does it use? Micro?
Do you think it will be possible to buy a Us handset and unlock it?
Will it be 4G enabled?
I just spoke with three different verizon customer service representatives and they all said the phone is locked to Verizon. Two of them said Verizon never unlocks their phones and the last one said devices can be unlocked if you have 90 days of good payment history. Is there a different way to unlock android devices other than having carriers do it for you?

Sometimes... I think you need to have S-Off though... I could be wrong though.
Just because it has GSM support in the radio, doesn't necessarily mean it has a SIM slot! If I'm not mistaken, the Photon Q or whatever the Moto slider for Sprint is has a pentaband radio but no SIM slot...
Anyone got details on that?

[Q]Why Droid DNA can't use other CDMA network ?

Sorry for asking stupid question....
I did some research, but I still can't figure out why DNA can't uses other CDMA network.
Is it the problem if radio???
According what I see, DNA is able to unlock bootloader, s-off, root.
What stuff should I waiting for? Radio?
Your answer will help me know what kind of threads I should pay attention to. Thanks a LOT in advanced!
BTW, I am planning use DNA in Taiwan with a CDMA network provider.
I had checked the hardware is fitted to my network (CDMA2000 800Mhz). Thanks for all concerned!

Hi,
First of all, you must understand that GSM & CDMA are dissimilar technologies, whereas with GSM you can easily swap between carriers so long as they have the same/supported radio frequencies and your phone is sim-unlocked, this is not possible with CDMA. CDMA devices do not use a sim card to retain your account information or activation abilities. When it comes to CDMA (from my understanding) the ESN is key, the ESN must be added to your networks (for lack of a better term at the moment) ESN database. In the United States, most CDMA carriers will not add ESN's of other carriers phones to their network, your results may be different, because of your location. If your carrier were to allow or be willing to add the ESN of the DNA you obtain to their database than there is a possibility that it may work. (I am unsure if that can just be done or if it would have to be removed from Verizon's network & so forth, because I've never personally had to do such a thing)
There is a second problem though, the LTE radio / sim card interface. Because of the way these phones work on Verizon with LTE, I am unsure if you could even activate it, because it looks like the LTE sim is needed to authenticate your account to the carrier like a regular GSM phone. I have no idea how you would activate this phone without LTE / GSM on your carrier, even with the CDMA ESN added. It seems like it would be a double edged sword, but I could be wrong in this respect.
Also at this current time, this phone has root, and an unlocked bootloader through HTCDev, but is still **S-ON**.
Though none of those things have to do with you being able to use this phone on your carrier.
If your carrier was GSM I would say go for it because this is a GSM Global phone as well, but because its CDMA that you need I really incredibly doubt you'll be able to use this phone, but I may be wrong, but until someone else states otherwise I would look for a different phone.
Hope this Helps!
I am also interested in it. How can we check it out? I should go to my CDMA carrier and ask to activate my ESN?
Where can i find ESN? In Settings-About there is only MEID, IMEI, Phone serial number and IMSIAdded
I work for a CDMA carrier in the USA and with lte on the phones now, they truly act as gsm phones. If your CDMA carrier has lte then they can give you a sim and it will activate your DNA. However, if they only operate on 2g/3g then the post above me is correct with the ESN database and will USUALLY not activate the phone (in store sales reps usually don't even have the ability). Even if they have lte, activating another carrier's phone is not in the best interest of the sales Rep and they usually won't.
YMMV

From my experience, they will not be able to activate it if they do not have lte, as they would need to have a settings file made for that phone to get it to work on their network. Nevers hurts to call and ask though.

Unlock to use on any carrier?

The Dev forum has a neat tutorial to unlock your phone through Htcdev.com.
Noob question: does this mean you can use an AT&T One with T-mobile and foreign carriers?
Also, the AT&T One includes all the LTE bands covered by the T-mobile One. AT&T also includes most HSPA bands covered by T-mobile One.
Does this mean AT&T One can use HSPA and LTE on T-mobile?

The unlock on htcdev is for the bootloader, not carrier unlock. To carrier unlock an AT&T phone you would need the unlock code from AT&T which they would give if you purchased the phone at full price (not sure why somebody would that when you could order the carrier unlocked version directly from HTC which would be bloat free; the only reason to do that would be the fact that you can get AT&T HTC one much faster than carrier unlocked from HTC/Letstalk)
You are right about the AT&T one and T-mobile both capable of LTE on both carriers. But both the AT&T and carrier unlocked phone from HTC lack the 1700 AWS HSPA T-mobile band, so those will get 3G/4G/HSPA only if you live in a T-mobile 1900mhz refarmed area (and speeds on that 1900 refarmed spectrum seem to vary from person to person or place to place)

You can unlock your Note 2 without root and without paying. You'll have to downgrade to 4.1.1 regardless because T-Mobile and other carriers put a block on 4.1.2 (I know this because I just got rid of my Note 2 and had to find all this out through a lot of searching. The unlock code I ordered was correct but wouldn't work until I downgraded.)

Don't forget that voice goes over AWS *exclusively* via UMTS/HSPA in markets that either have no 1900 licenses or very bad 1900 coverage.
It pisses me off that they are *STILL* splitting bands between carriers... It really wouldn't take that much to make a universal GSM phone... Tha being said, it *may* be possible to unlock the AWS frequency in the future - that is, if all the internals are the same between the devices. It wouldn't surprise me if it is gimped like the T-Mobile S3 got gimped in terms of LTE support.

Of course it's not hard, especially with current gen basebands, to support a full range of UMTS frequencies. Network operators get OEMs to restrict bands to make buying their subsidized phones less desirable to other operators, i.e. it makes it harder for someone to move from AT&T to T-Mobile. This is an easy business decision for the operators and OEMs don't seem to care much, since I doubt many consumers even know that they should expect their GSM phone from AT&T to work on another GSM network. I remember some people on twitter earlier aptly likening it to DRM--its only purpose is to make their customers' lives more difficult. The fact that Google has supported pentaband UMTS on the Nexus 4/7 and Galaxy Nexus is a great reason to love them, but I digress.
As for granting UMTS over AWS to the AT&T One, it seems pretty unlikely. It's already been shown to be not as simple as a radio flash, and I haven't heard of anyone successfully adding new bands to MDM9x15 devices the way they did with earlier basebands like on US GS2 variants. It's possible that there is some obscure configuration point in our firmware somewhere that will enable such support--and I'm sure there are people out there digging--but I'm not holding my breath, personally.

Oh I agree with you completely but stranger things have happened like at&t S3s having hidden AWS LTE support... all it takes to activate is a special ROM/radio/bootloader/recovery set that T-Mobile made to test their LTE network... flashes right over the I747 via Odin and unlocks AWS HSPA and LTE. And the Nexus 4 AWS LTE hack too.
Its still annoying... I think we will start to see more compatibility coming up though for roaming revenue purposes... At least between at&t and T-Mobile. I guess we will see. I am waiting to see what comes of the mysterious LG D810 that is running the Snapdragon 800 before deciding on my next device but I'm almost 100% sure I will be passing the GS4 up though.
I thought you could not factory unlocked phones in the USA that were manufactured after Jan 26. 2013 unless the carrier unlocked them? Or is this over now because I'm getting my ONE today and was curious

The OP is talking about Bootloader unlock, you're talking about network unlock. It's not illegal to get network unlock if it is through your provider, I believe the whole no unlocking thing has more to do with 3rd party unlockers.
Anyways if the government told you that it's against the law to unlock your toilet so you could take a $hit, would you listen to them or would you just unlock the door and take a $hit anyways? I'll choose the latter thank you

SIM unlocking a phone is not a bodily function, so I don't think your example applies.

I know the two actions are completely different. My point was that a law against unlocking your mobile device would be as stupid as not being allowed to perform a regular "bodily function". It's just a stupid law that was lobbied by the contract sucking mobile carriers. The actual phone manufacturers could care less. Another example is: if you buy a car and have it financed then being told you can't add custom wheels or exhaust system. That's a good example right?

Look, I don't particularly like the rule, but if I need my phone unlocked tmobile will provide a code. The carriers subsidize the phones, even tmo through their zero interest loans. So from their perspective it makes sense.

T-Mobile isn't subsidizing AT ALL now, you pay full retail for any device. They should *HAVE* to provide unlock codes right off the bat.
And they do -
Devices Purchased at Full Retail Price
If you paid full retail price for an eligible device:
T-Mobile will provide the SIM unlock code as long as:
Your T-Mobile account is in good standing; and
The device has been completely paid for (you must fax the proof of purchase to T-Mobile).

They are subsidizing the cost of the loan. The unlock is only available if you have paid the phone off.
They are charging zero percent interest on a consumer item.

All HTC Droid DNAs purchased through Verizon are factory locked. You can find ones online that may be unlocked but most are locked.
But, fortunately, it's extremely trivial to unlock an HTC Droid DNA and, from what I've heard, they work just find on GSM networks like T-Mobile, etc.
Good luck!
The dna is factory unlocked if your going to run on a gsm carrier just grab that sim pop it in and switch the network mode on your phone to gsm through settings.

You also need to change the APN settings to get Internet and mms to work. I just switched to Net10 AT&T version. You can also use T-Mobile just takes a different sim. You won't get 4g lte since our phone only has that band for Verizon but your 3g will be faster.

They are bootloader locked, not carrier locked, which is what he was asking. There's more then one type of lock on these devices.
So, all DNAs are carrier unlocked for GSM use, in case it comes up again and you answer

People out there still give misinformation about the DNA not being unlocked. The term doesn't really apply since its a Global phone. Both GSM or LTE Sim cards work so any GSM carrier and Verizon on the CDMA side will work.
thx guys for your prompt replies! The only other time ive used a verizon phone on gsm network was the droid 2 global. Which was "unlocked" well atleast sim unlocked but had a band lock and needed the TBH band unlock ( great group btw) to unlock the bands to use american gsm networks. I just wanted to confirm that the DNA didn't have a band lock like the droid 2 global.

nopes, no band locks..i have used the DNA on AT&T and T-Mobile in USA. Airtel & Idea in India with no issues. 3g worked on all 4 carriers.
what about cdma
would the phone work if i put in a cdma ruim from anothe operator (want to use this on reliance cdma in India)?
or does the bootloader need some fixing before it can recognize the reliance ruim?
