[Q] Kernel for nandroid backups? - JB 4.1.2 leak - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on the stock leaked ROM & kernel. I hear that Philz kernel has some added functionality but dodgy with nandroid backups. Can anyone confirm this? Are there any other kernels yet which are better for this?

apart from 'Philz' kernel no other Custom kernels will wrk with Stock JB leak ma8

OK thanks for that. Guess I'll have to wait. I really want to be able to do a nandroid backup in case things screw up and I have to spend ages restoring everything.

I never had problem with backups on Philz kernel. At least for me to do backup and restore working well.

Can't seem to install this! Just tried flashing the latest - PhilZ-cwm6-XXLSJ-OXX-3.70 - using Mobile Odin. It just reboots the phone and the kernel isn't flashed. Tried it twice with/without the md5 tag but didn't work either time. What am I doing wrong?

Is your phone rooted properly in order to use mobile odin. Else flash the philz .tar.md5 in download mode via odin.

Well, it's rooted - not sure about properly. I flashed a file (posted on XDA) which rooted it after flashing the ROM. Everything appears to be rooted - Superuser, Busybox, etc
Problem is I can't use Odin cause I'm on a Mac so I have to use the mobile version.

Your rooted for sure, i also flash that update.zip on recovery, but the thing is you cant flash a kernel via mobileodin.. i dont have an experience of flashing fw,kernel on M .O,but i read somewhere many users experiencing issues when using that, thats why i prefer windows odin. im not saying dont use M.O.. but if you want a guaranteed flashing just used odin for windows.

OK cheers.
Just out of interest I just booted into recovery <3e> and I get an error message in red at the bottom:
"E:Failed to seek in /cache/update.zip )invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed"
I'm confused. Does this refer to the root "update.zip" or to the kernel which didn't flash?

What does mobile odin says when you flash the kernel lately?and did you rename this

Yes, I renamed it "update.zip" before moving it to the ex SD and flashing it.
When I try and flash Philz kernel, it selects OK in Mobile Odin but when I press "flash" the phone just reboots normally, not into recovery and the kernel isn't flashed.

[Q] Update CWM on incorrect kernel

I am having a little bit of trouble trying to solve a problem with CWM. I rooted my phone earlier last year and decided to try some roms lately but I am now in a bad position as CWM is telling me I have a different kernel and I am unable to get the option to restore my previous rom backup. I keep hearing to use Odin which I previously used to root my phone, to update CWM in the kernel to the latest version. Normally when I update the kernel it is quite simple - just install from the zip on sd, but Odin is a complete mess to understand. I am probably approaching this incorrectly. What can I do to restore to my previous CWM backup?
Try using ROM Manager to flash CWM, this might solve your problem.

That did not seem to work. Rom Manager stops working and after awhile it asks if I want to wait or stop the program.
Is there a way to get this to work through odin? I am unable to reset to the default firmware as some files are irretrievable now.

[Q] Flashed ICS on Note, now CANNOT get root!

I'm running IML74K.UCLd3, kernel 3.0.8 and android version 4.0.3.
For some reason, that ROM flashes fine. When I try to flash att_note_root.tar in Odin to get root, it all seems to go fine, then I can't boot the phone at all. It took a few tries to get back into download mode. The only thing I could do to boot the phone up was to flash the ROM again. So I still don't have root.
How can I:
Get root
Reinstall my apps (I have a Titanium backup)
Will installing old apps mess the new ROM up?
Do I need a new kernel?
I've been told to flash CWM to get root, but I don't know which version to flash.
HELP!!

Yup...did follow the instructions. What I could NOT do was to reboot into recovery mode to finish the job. Held down vol up/down and power till the screen went black, the released vol up and power. All it did was put me in the yellow triangle screen with the options of vol down to reboot or vol up to download. No way to access recovery mode.
You let go of the wrong button...
All three buttons till you feel a vibrate..Then let off the POWER BUTTON

That's weird, You may try downloading the zip fresh, or if ask else fails grab the Odin flashable tar and use that.

That has the Odin flashable cwm touch file... that version is outdated so after flashing that, you'll have cwm, but flashing a newer Rom zip might end up with a "status 7 error" in recovery.
At that point I'd personally use goo manager go grab the latest version of a cwm zip, that'll be usable in the version of cwm I posted above.

Are you saying I should _not_ use TWRP to put CWM on?
No, it should work, just saying if it still gives you the proverbial finger, Odin is your friend and that version is just the latest with an Odin .tar
So to have your cake (cwm) and eat it too (flash new roms) you'll need to update your recovery from that older version of cwm
So you said you get an error when you tap to install? You should be flashing that zip in recovery like you would a ROM or mod. Is that what you did? After it installs just reboot recovery within twrp and bam!!! You'll have cwm.
Thanks so much for your help...my problem remains, so I may go back to a stock ROM for T-Mobile, since that is my provider, and see if I can solve it... Before I installed CWM, I could sms/mms to my e-mail address...I can't any longer.

I removed the battery because it was not charging and I thought I won't can flash any rom with the battery low,so I will seek more advices before turning it back on,so..
Wipe removed all my files, including stock rom,but I don't know if volume down + power + home button will work.Well I went into choose zip from sdcard and they all were there,I ran super wipe as it was said in the flash tutorial and it deleted almost everything,I am stuck into recovery and I cannot enter sdcard because there are no files anymore, such as the rom needed to be flashed.
If I mount sdcard n the mount and storage in cwm will windows explorer be able to put the rom back there? So i can flash it with.
update: volume down+home+power works perfectly, should I flash the rom with odin directly? the sdcard is empty too.

I will flash stock rom then I will try again to do android revolution hd 2.2.0 ( the step I missed is about creating a virtual ssd )
I will come with an update if the flash stock rom through odin works.
Checkrom comes in two versions, one is Odin flashable, flash that.then u are rooted after flashing
Next time u use superwipe remember to move the rom to EXTERNAL SD-card ,because internal SD-card is wiped.
Weird..odin exits after a while it says Please wait then it quits, while trying to flash stock rom, what's the problem?
I found a way to put the rom back there, but it is in sdcard, and I cannot enter it ( cannot mount )
How can I solve this from the recovery mode? I am still stuck in recovery mode or download mode..and the rom is on the card now,but cannot access to flash it with cwm

The rom had to be put on a virtual/external sdcard, but because I didn't read carefully I put it on sdcard aslong with superwipe,so after I launched superwipe it deleted the sdcard files and the stock OS too,so it just says samsung galaxy siii like before it boots, but it stays that way..
I don't know how to get into the sdcard, cwm recovery says it cannot mount it,sdcard contains my rom,and because I cannot access it,I cannot flash it..I need a way to help cwm to mount sdcard,so I can flash it from there..
Otherwise I tried flashing stock rom but odin crashes, like I press start, then it says check md5 then Please wait,it gets stuck and quits..

As I remind all ICS kernels worked also on GB.
Only problems where JB kernels with Mali driver.

Okay. But does this error say to me that the nandroid backupping was unsuccessful or can i handle it like a notice so that I've got a correct nandroid backup un my system ?
I think it just "aborts" if it fails.

Is there a way to check that ?
I don't want to install a new kernel when it already works with the old one
They are stored in clockworkmod>backup folder. So successful ones should be there...

OK. I don't have this folder on my System. So I think it is either an application error so that it would not create that folder or it is not created because the backup doesn't run complete.

I think u won't get further with this kernel.
It's written that it isn't possible to get into the CSC.
So maybe it's because the kernel is not able to OR because soemthing wrong with the CSC.
Backup all ur important data to PC and try, or u can life without a nandroid backup

Okay. I saw in my Smartphone, that everytime I've tried to start the CWM Recovery it was landing in the Android System Recovery. It doesn't matter when I start the Backupping over the ROM-Manager or over the 3-Button-Mehtod. I don't come into the CWM Recovery.
My installed Verison is the 3.0.0.x version for Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100). When I choose the Samsung Galaxy S2 (galaxys2) CWM Recovery version, then i am coming into the CWM recovery tool but then it hang with that message

Right, with what you are saying you do not have permanent cwm and you mention rom manager. That doesnt work properly with s2 so if I was you I would
Flash that kernel mentioned earlier or
Get siyah 2.6.14 .tar kernel and flash it using odin
