Nokia Lumia 920 - review and why I returned it. - Nokia Lumia 920

I bought the 920 on weds..just returned today. The first one the shop had was DoA but the guy gave me another meant for another customer. The phone is top notch quality albeit on the heavier side. Camera placement in the center is not ideal and the phone could slip out of your hands..but its built like a tank. Screen is excellent and call quality is clear . Despite the weight it feels really good...better than the iphone 5 which i also have and night and day against any samsung phone (i had note 2 as well). Now the bad news.
Windows 8 mobile sucks!!! It took me an hour to setup my windows live or is it hotmail account. When I first setup it thought I was a child and gave me the round around telling me to check with family controls etc. Also I needed to put my credit card details etc just to access the app store. This process was also confusing since it redirected to the awful internet explorer mobile on the phone where the fonts were so small I couldnt see damn thing. Resizing the web page was cumbersome at best. I tried a few times...and i was so frustrated i felt like throwing the phone against the wall. In the end I did a hard reset and after more mucking around and searching on forums I got it working. But it was like pulling teeth.
Once I got my account setup..you cant change it unless you do a hard reset. So you are basically locked to that account. So if you have one older MS live account and a newer one , you wont be able to switch. This is the most retarded thing out. On android and iOs you can have many accounts as you want. I have a US, UK account which I like to use.
Anyway the first thing I did was go to the app store to download essentials such as Whatsapp , skype etc since nowadays we dont really talk anymore on the phone but message.Skype was ok and it has a special interface coz MS owns it. Slightly heavy to hold
It may be good for ppl who take a lot of photos since the camera is supposed to be the best on any phone..apart from that..would advise you to stay away until the win8 bugs are sorted.

I set up my mail and main account in less than 5 minutes on my 920. It synced perfectly and pulled down all my contacts, calendar, and photo.
Music syncing wasn't quite as smooth, but I got it working. I do agree about having only one main account and not being able to change it seems stupid.
As for apps, they are coming, but I have noticed some developers putting out subpar WP8 apps while their iOS and Android are fine. I blame the developers for that crap. It's inexcusable.

Hmm that's funny...
I have an adriod tablet... gmail account and credit card needed for the marketplace... hmm Sounds like an iPhone where an Apple id is required to use the iCrap. Same issue there. Now, I do have one customer that has a Blackberr..... uh nope just switched to a 920. Just saying, your first point has me wondering where else it is any different. The comparison to iOS, eh... one thing I don't have an issue wit on the phone is text size and reading all that, but you do realize you can change that in the settings!!!! This was a change over WP7. Yes there are some subpar apps, but that's what sets WP apart so much of the phone will do what you need 10 apps to do on iOS and Andriod. I can do most of what you do faster on any other platform. However, this is all a preference argument and I personally don't have an app hard on. I had to help a customer settle in coming from her iPhone, but we set up her outlook to use her Micosoft accout for her contacts and calander. She is all setup like if she had excange server at home without changing her other email address. There is a learning curve with any switch... you made one when you bought your first iPhone. You are not buying a new iPhone, it is a new platform.

I'm sorry you had such a hard time setting an account. In my case, it look me less than 2 mins. It would have been much easier for you to create an account on your computer and then just sign-in with your phone. Wish WP8 provided a "hint" like this to those who are completely new to this ecosystem.

Completely agree.. iCrap forces you to do it that way... the device does not even power on without initially hooking it up and setting it up with iTunes on a computer. I think Micrsoft could recomend it on that first setup screen. If you already have an MS account you don't need to go to the computer at all.... so at least with WP8 you can skip that step and have everything setup before you get home. Just when you thought that would be a feature!

OP, I feel your pain. I like my Nokia 920, but am starting to get cold feet because of the apps. One example, I drive a Toyota it uses ENTUNE, there is no app and possibly will never be fully compatible. ALso things like HBO GO and such. I dont use them much on a phone anyway, but I still miss it. And as my cable company adds Video Apps, they take forever to get to Android, how long until they even acknowledge WP8?? My Son is a college athlete, whats the odds his schools app will have a WP8 version? Again, I do like the phone, if I didnt also use a 7" Galaxy Tab, I probably would have returned it. However, the new Galaxy Note 2 is tempting me to switch phones again...

While the setup on mine was easy, I'll be returning it today for one big reason...the camera. Granted, I knew going in that they camera has problems in daylight shots, but I figured I'd give it a try in the real world and see how my results turned out. Honestly, even worse than I expected. I also have the SIII and this thing can't hold a candle to it's camera. Maybe Nokia fixes it with a software update, but what if they don't? I'd rather return it and wait and see rather than keep it, go beyond my return window, and be stuck with such a crappy camera that never gets fixed.
He's a comparison shot I did this morning. The 920 picture looks like it's been run through some sort of cartoon editing software. Look at the tree on the right with the dead leaves still on it compared to the shot from the SIII. Insanity.

The colors are alright, but there's absolutely NO clarity. Just awful. So, for now, while I love the phone in every other regard, I'll be returning it and waiting to see if the camera gets fixed.

set up hotmail, gmail, and facebook in seconds, downloaded my contacts from google having migrated from bustedrobot, besides the lack of apps (as its has been repeated their coming) wipes the floor with bustedrobot and i-crap and anything from RIM. easily the best phone ive owned in years

Yeah, I have seen a couple of those shots show up, but the majority of shots put the SIII to shame. Go indors and take some shots without the flash (turn it off) And yes the Lumia 900 had some simular issues and yep that got an update right away. The cam went from lackluster to pretty damn good. The pictures consistantly came out better than my transforer prime tablet which had a decent camera.

Hmm, I set mine up in the store while waiting for the receipt to be printed. But I did already have a .live account. I didn't have to input a credit card because if I buy anything I just add it to my ATT bill. Very unlike my iPad where Apple insists I have a CC on file.
As for locking you into one specific account, well, that's no different from Apple. I can't change my Apple ID either.
And apps? Well, I find that the OS does just about anything I need without specific apps. Whereas I find IOS not much more than a glorified 'app launcher'.
Don't get me wrong. I love my iPad. But I expect something more and different from my phone. I expect my phone to simplify my life and frankly I find this OS does that. I was a 'flashacholic' when I had previous windows phones so I really considered a new Android phone. But frankly WP8 is a dream to use.
OP, sorry you had such a hard time. I had the same hard time the first times tried to set up my first iPad. This comes from being familiar with an OS. Other OSs feel 'wrong'. The 920 isn't for everyone, nor is WinPhone 8, nor is IOS or even Android.
Ain't choice great!

That's the thing... I don't shoot indoor shots often. The camera is something I use in my job and those are outdoor shots. Great phone, but the camera software needs some work.

Agreed, and far, FAR beyond iPhone, which I ran with for over 2 years.
As for setting up the Microsoft account, I don't see how anyone could have a problem with it. More importantly, if you know you have to set one up...do it on your PC, not your phone. That's just common sense, or so I'd guess.
Windows Phone 8 is, hands down, the best mobile OS I've ever used, and I've used them all.

If that is the case, the Lumia has the most potential. The limitations are on the way the phone is processing the pictures (software) not a limitation on hardware. Hardware you can't change, software you can. Every phone today gets tweeked with after it's initial release. The 920 will be no different. The stabilization works, the low light performance works... Give them a chance to update and if it still doesn't perform... something better will be out there or coming out.

I absolutely agree the Lumia has tons of potential. And I'm sure they'll put out an update to the software to fix the camera. That's why I returned mine to wait until they do. I can promise you, once they fix it and the reviews start pouring in that the camera is good to go, I'll be picking another one up. Other than the camera software, this phone is amazing.

But even when i turned flash off the flash was still on for some reason. The lens placement in the center of the phone meant that you would take shots of your fingers instead. Since the phone is heavy it was hard to just hold the bottom half to take pics. They should put the lens on the top left/right.

Youre dont mean the focus-assist lighting? You know, the light that makes your camera able to focus on things it might normally be too dark for it to focus on? Cause thats not flash.
I never take a picture of my fingers. Also, pressing on the screen to take a photo could help you out if you feel its too heavy to hold while using the manual button.
Personally the WP8 experience is on par with the experience I had on my SGS3 with android 4.1.
I like the homescreen far more than on Android, and the way social and email is integrated with the native apps like messaging, contacts, etcetera.
I dont like IE10 as much as Chrome, but thats MOSTLY because of how IE10 handles doubletap to zoom and textwrapping plus certain messageboards. Why no mobile browser besides the microB-browser has had swirlzooming is beyond me.
All in all, the 920 is better for me than the SGS3, and Id choose it over SGS3 any day of the week.

Movies were good as display is excellent.. For some reason it also just shutdown completely last night (with 70% battery) and it took a soft reset to get it going again. The live tiles system is different and people who are tired of ios or droid may find this unique but the novelty factor wears off since not all tiles are live. The UI is smooth and there was no lag. Also little things like no batt percentage and some youtube videos wouldnt play (vevo) as it recognized win8 as mobile device. This works on ios and droid.

Got a Lumia 920 yesterday for my wife (not a technically savvy person at all!) Once she had her bearings (about 5 minutes navigating around) it took her less than 5 minutes to set up all her e-mails. There was no need to give any credit card information, and the camera is really good in low lights... compared it to my S2. Daylight shots are a little washed out, but READ! a camera firmware patch is coming soon. Tech specs on the camera are really good, and so is the screen... these two and the solid constructions are the reason i opted for this phone. Pretty sure others would agree.
And in conclusion, if it took you over an hour to set up email, it's a good thing you returned this phone. I would highly recommend staying miles away from Android or Windows devices; a Leap-frog or an Apple product would work best for you.

I read a post about how amazing Night mode was. So I played around with the scenes Close Ups, Cloudy, and Night Mode. So often, that stuff is just a gimmick, not on this phone!

I returned my Lumia 900 cause it was hard for me to transition from Android and it was lacking. I gave the 920 and WP8 another chance and never looked backed. It's restricted compared to how you have so much customization you can do on Android, but the 920 is far from being some kind of wash out. The stabilization of the camera is one of the best I've seen. I've take shots compared to my HTC One X and the stability feature is awesome.
Personally I love a heavy set phone. Gives me the feel of sturdiness. I've always liked heavier phone.
The screen in day light is simply the best thing I have ever seen. The way the color tones adjust to bright light is incredible. Even with the top down on my car I can see the screen crystal clear.
The speaker on this thing is SUPER loud. Louder than my Nexus 7. The EQ on this thing absolutely smashes anything my One X Beats Audio could dish out. It's even better than any EQ feature on Android 3rd party apps like Power Amp. When I adjust the EQ it adjust.
It took me minutes to set up my Live, Google, LinkedIn, Yahoo, NetZero, and Hotmail Account. The integration is very nice in how it works together.
I have my quarrels with WP8, but it's super stable and nicely integrated with apps optimized for it's ecosystem.
IMHO WP8 is at the point of what Froyo was for Android. One of those landmark version that will get this OS out in the wild.
Sorry to hear you not like it, I can understand as I been there with the 900, but I can't justify it with the 920. The apps will come, the stability will come, the updates to software will come.
I've actually had the worse upgrade of JB on my Nexus 7 when they fixed the bugs of forgetting to December in the calendar. And to be quite frank my 920 process faster than my One X with the same processor and my Nexus 7. I'll never stop using Android, but I'll never say WP8 sucks. There's no way.

I agree with OP regarding the email client; 1 account is not enought. For the rest i can only say that i setup my phone in 5 minutes with no problems at all. Using my 920 since 2 weeks, coming from an iphone4 and no regrets at all.

[q] is htchd2 really worth it?

ok so we all know that the htc leo has alot of cool features you can use on it and alot of its qaulity is unique. but unfortunatly it has lots of problems too. i so far has gotten 4 brand new htc hd2's and they all have bugs and problems within them like restarting by itself many times and freezes. tell me what u think?
I love the phone. But I also have very few freezes and have never had the phone reset itself.
I've never had a defective phone. I think a lot of it is things we do to them.

Same here. The only time I get lockups or slow-downs are after I install certain apps.
Same here..............
Had mine since November and the only problems have been ones that Ive caused through too much tweaking.....
And a problem with T Mobiles original stock rom but that was T Mobiles fault not the HD2.......

The HD2 is a wonderful machine that gives you best performance and wonderful features.
Especially when u compares it to competitive products or the price paid.
I have HD2 , T-8585, since January and never had any freeze or self restart.
All problems I had never cased from the HD2 itself. They cased from installing soft wares which sometimes do not work properly with other soft wares. That was easily recovered with the assistance of nice guys here.
Some problems occurred from defective accessories such as croppy cheap usb-micro cable.
The HD2 is wonderful machine that can be easily converted and modified according to your needs and imagination.
Thanks for the great answers ! I think its just the T-Mobile Rom thats a complete piece of crap. Because I didnt even add anything or tweaked the first 2 phones i got and they still caused many problems within the first day no B/S. Another quick question dough, how much would it cost to buy and repair an htc hd2 LCD screen, because one of my phones screen cracked. Its not the glass outer part that broke but the inner screen.
I am agree with you all, it's a great phone fast-big screen-cool design, but....
It's worth to pay 450 euro for this phone now (AUG)?? I mean I can wait for the next generation (mabe hd3/NOV or DECEMBER) thaat will have more features like an S-AMOLED and mabe a hdmi cable, and all of that with +50 euro.
Do you know anything about new HTC phones that will be released and when, and it is worth to wait more??? Thank you!
I believe the hd2 is one of the best devices on the market. It's fast, it has wonderful features, and now it is capable of running more then one os. Even the stock winmo isn't bad if yu change the rom and don't care about downloading apps. I believe for tmo usa, the hd2 is hands down the best phone they have, other then the n1. And yes better then the samsung vibrant, which is supposed to b upgrade but doesn't even have a camera flash.my experience with samsung phones has been horrible. I don't even think froyo has been released for it. Even tho it's ported, I've been running froyo on my hd2 since late july. As for up coming phones, google htc vision aka g1 blaze. 1GHz processor, medium sized screen, slide out keyboard and android. Basically the first legit replacement for the original g1. Much better then that mediocre mytouch slide 3g. The choice is yours.personally I love my hd2, but yu might just want to wait alittle while longer.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Btw the htc vision should b coming out before the years end. Also there is a rumored hd3 coming soon that is supposed to run wimo7. Decision, decisions lol best thing about the hd2, runs winmo 6.xx, runs linux, runs android, and most likely will run winmo7(I'm sure someone will figure out how to port it) what other phone can do that! Lol decisions decisions

i think its a Great phone, i love everything about it slim design customisation element big screen but unfortunately it does have its flaws eg battery life occasional freezing to name a few plus no further windows upgrade officially it looks like a dying breed imo but without the chefs on here this handset will be resurrected with android port coming through and presumably windows 7 the futures look good
I do love the phone alot and i do think its the best phone on the market but im just highly upset with its problems. My bad luck i guess hehe . I have another question dough.
What does the red or yellow dots on the back of the phone next to the battery on the lower left mean? I got a 3 phones with red dots but 1 with a yellos dot.

all that is a reset button. First it was red, then on the newer batch, it was changed to yellow.
For me, its the best windows phone I have ever used. Although if I was thinking of buying a new phone at this stage of the year, I think I would wait till around Oct-Nov or at least i'll wai for the first release of W7 and see if it is worth the wait. But the HD2's built I think is almost perfect(virtual keys at the bottom would have made it perfect for me).
Well dasz really true ! Thanksz for all da help guysz .. Ima jusz try to find the best rom out there . I wuld like sum help on dat too if u dont mind hehe This site is very supportive and useful !! Big thumbs up
Coming from a google phone for the past 2 years and then going back to Windows I was amazed how easy it was to deal with the phone.
The issues are the same as the others freezing, lag, etc. I think its the stock ROM itself, but I wonder? Sometimes it acts like my old dash and when you have to close the tasks and use a program to clear up ram space, it annoys me.
I don't like the windows market place, in google certain programs are free, but in windows you have to pay to use features? F-that.
I awating till they perfect a andriod rom to be put in the HD2 with no issues.
The good points of the phone is that it syncs to my outlook with ease..

So does this mean that no matter what rom i put into the phone, it will always be lagging and freezing as it normally would?

I wouldnt say that since most of the roms here seem to make it run better, but Windows mobile is crap compared to Linux.
The HD2 has the same features as my Andriod phone Google maps, You Tube, Google Browser, yet run like crap on the windows mobile phone. GPS take forever to lock on and the maps just has a differnet feel to it..Youtube runs differnet and the browser is crap
Does this phone really have a 1 ghz processor? It feels like my a phone is on 450ghz at times, again maybe window mobile requires too much?
I'm going to flash a rom on the phone since I am tired of the battery drain which is annoying
I have a Nexus One that I am in the process of selling since I like the Hd2 alot more.
The Hd2 does everything I could ever ask of a smartphone and more:
- Free turn by turn GPS directions
- Emulator gaming
- Word/Excel documents
- Bluetooth keyboard support (Android cant do this at all)
- Voice recorder
- Gorgeous 4.3' monster screen
- Tethering
I haven't had any problems with my Hd2 whatsoever. If anything Android gave me more problems than Windows Mobile. The only reason you hear about Android more is it's newer and the media want's to push it as hard as they do with Apple stuff for ratings...
I'm bored with my HD2. Because its working perfectly. I guess I need a new phone with lots of problems
I love the phone. It's design is great, the screen is amazing and the hardware is beefy. What really makes the phone though is the community and chefs here at XDA. I lose count of the amount of times I have reflashed my phone. With different ROMS, experimenting and messing around. It's a great device if you like doing that. It makes you pity the iSheep followers, really..
However, my main 2 drawbacks are this: 1) The battery life is poor.. although that is understandable with the screen and hardware it's got to supply. 2) the fact that HTC have confirmed that they will not be supporting/supplying WinMo 7 for the device. However, I hold out hope that will not be a problem for the clever guys here at XDA .

[Q] What's your Tab experiance?

I just got a new Tab 10.1 for Christmas (actually got it the 23rd) and I have to say I am a bit disappointed with it.
I am on vacation for three weeks so I have been on the tab pretty much constantly since the 23rd trying to personalize it and get it working as I believe it should.
Now don't misinterpret my post here, I'm not bashing it, I love everything Android, I'm just trying to understand what others are experiencing and maybe learn what I can do to make mine better.... I've read and read on this forum and already done several tips, tricks and other things that I would have assumed would have improved the device but so far it's still the same.
My biggest disappointment is video..... My phone plays everything I go watch with no lag or trouble... but This Tab will only play You-Tube videos.
If I go to a website it either tells me I need a plug-in (which is already installed)
or it does nothing and just gives me a black box where the video would be...
I've tried a bunch of different browsers: FireFox, Opera, Dolphin, even the built in android browser and they all do it.
I've reinstalled flash several times and updated it and still I only have video in You tube.
I have the hardest time getting apps to D/L from the market...I keep getting a no connection pop up. I'm using several other devices at the same time and they dont drop connection constantly so it gotta be something with the Tab itself.
Another thing that is kinda bugging me is all the lag in the screen and with the keyboard.... Everything moves kinda choppy or just is very slow to respond.
I did manage to D/L another keyboard which seems to be better.
I thought if I rooted it and got the bloatware off it would improve it but I can't see any improvement overall and it is disappointing...
So guys, what am I doing wrong with this thing? I'd love to be able to use it to watch news, play music and reply to the text and emails I get on my cell with the larger interface but I can't see that happening with how she's running at the present.
My cell does all of the above flawlessly running Cyanogen 7 on 2.3.7 so I'm wondering if I just need to get away from the stock rom or something...I've done everything else I can think of.
What do you all think, Thanks
Hey I bought a 4g version yesterday BNIB for 350 cnd off kijiji to replace my hp touchpad running cyanogenmod 7. It is no where near half the machine my hp was its already back on kijiji looking for trades maybe a asus... im on official 3.2 and it lags like crazy, fc's all the time and ive had to hard restart twice. no ports excepts the proprietary, terrible speaker placement and sound (compared to my hp **** even my sgs2) + barely no dev for the 4g version I dont understand why anyone would want this thing. feel free to flame this post but give facts to back it.
I actually used to love this device but now that i just look at it...its pretty bad build quality and software...the software can be taken care of but COME ON SAMSUNG...USE METAL FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!

they fixed the wifi right?...yeah i know gps is screwed up.
samsung is a pretty smart company..they can figure it out...i have faith..one day...they will use metal
I only have the Wi-Fi version and I payed $175 Cnd for it from a friend and I'm more then happy with it , never had problems with it playing videos on stock but I did find the sensitivity on stock was pretty bad but since I switched to task's rom it's much better there's an app to I believe to help with this issue I'm not sure of the name of it though. I've never ran into that browser plug in problem either.
As far as metal, really use metal? Personally I like the plastic it's lighter and I use the Pyroskins 360 case and never see the back of the case anyway, awesome case btw for the price. Overall for what I paid for this tab it's awesome but if I had to pay retail $499 Cdn for it my opinion may have been different.

Yea but Samsung is notorious for using thin plastic, Original Galaxy S phone, Galaxy S II ext all plastic.
I understand the plastic is not hard as a rock , its thin , its light and really is just good for keeping the dust out, protection is very minimal. Once it's in a case you add another layer of plastic on the back for protection anyway and you can no longer see what its made of and the case doubles as a stand , win win and problem solved.
I'm not sure why Samsung never uses an all aluminum case , could be cost, patent problems or could be heat issues, the tab does tend to get pretty warm sometimes I find in the upper left hand corner area and if your using metal that heat could spread.
I have the Verizon LTE version and can't live without it. Simply love this thing despite the issues people describe. On 3.2 with pershoots kernel, v6 supercharger and zipalign scripts lag is acceptable in ADW launcher. Its not iPad smooth but good enough for me as I wait for ice cream sandwich on this thing.
As for videos l love it, the screen is phenomenal. I don't do video streams in browsers much but instead download TV shows from eztv and watch them or I encode my bluray rips to 720p specific to this tab and play them on it. Only streams I watch regularly outside of YouTube are revision 3 shows which play fine for me in their app.
I'm satisfied with build quality on it, once its in my pyroskin 360 the nonmetal back is irrelevant to me. The tablet did show the oil slick problem early on but I just changed case and handling habits and they never returned.
What I love most is doing circles around my wifes ipad2 away from home when she is on 3g and I'm on LTE.
I understand peoples frustrations even if I don't share them. I knew what I was getting into though and where I wanted to go from the start (cm9) so I'm just enjoying the ride along the way.

I bought 2 of the 16gb wifi models for christmas for my wife and i and at first was completly upset and disappointed . When i opened mine it had the newtonring issue right out of the box and gave it a few days to see if it would go away but to no avail ... My wife was to use hers for buisness use and at first wouldent do what she wanted it to so was worthless .
This is my first experince with android and a samsung mobile (always had ios devices )product but after all the reading ,reviews i did i went with these tabs because everything was on the up till we started using them.
Any way got my tab replaced with a new one and since installed task 10 on both ,overclocked mine now they meet our needs and pretty happy with the purchase. With out being able to do this i would of returned both and went a different direction .

Find it funny that in all the footage they're using all kinds of stuff to use the screen and in reality it's no better than anything else. I remember seeing a demo after the event of sumone who wud swipe the iPhone really fast for like two seconds, the phone would move on the desk and not give it a chance, even using the ends of his fingers. Where as showing off the Lumia he'd press down smoother and firmer with the tips of his finger and take his time lol.
When Nokia are showing stuff off at events or any one for that matter, you cannot ever believe them, they're gonna bull**** to sell their phone. Just wait for the real reviews and go see the phone yourself before making a blind decision. It's like the camera and how the video they pretended was of the Nokia 920 and then someone spotted the reflection of a bigger camera. How when they compared those night shots between phones the 808 is somehow worse than the 920? Obviously they've made the others look worse by turning off night mode and what ever else.
This is not true, there are photo comparisons with night mode on also. This pics were made from,, the verge'' and also engadget made some comparison pics with night mode when they was in Finland. So stop talking bull****, cause you have no idea.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Then how do you explain the 808 being worse when it's got the better camera?
Also how do you explain the press shots being so smooth and perfect but in real world shots by people other than Nokia they're all grainy and poor? Also I know for a fact that the GS3 didn't have night mode on in those pictures because it came out as that and they refined it.

Lol. Way to go. thanks for the review.
I personally was really sad when I watched them and saw, as you stated, that Wifi turns off on sleep/standby. Its so obvious to make it optional. I dont want my 3G limit going off when I am covered with wifi both at work and home and push notification is always on. Plus skydrive wifi backup of photos and videos, those shouldn't stop just because phone goes to sleep. I mean like if I update something on my pc/notebook and it auto-syncs to my skydrive, then it will only START to sync on my phone when and if I wake it up??? Too bad.
Also similarly what happend if on standby and Skype call comes in. Does it switch to wifi when I pick up? That needs some seconds to reconnect doesn't it?
In short, common MS what the hell where you thinking? And you had a beta tested 7.0 for more that a year. Didn't anyone in your guru team notice why its stupid to not have option for this???

Wifi goes off after 1 minute in standby if there is no traffic. If you are downloading in standby it doesnt go off.
Not really a review, but imo the best hands-on video yet, 18 minutes long.

Huh why all the hate?
Ask the random Canadien guy () for example how he felt about the night shots? You can find tons real life pictures taken with Lumia 920.
Lumia 920 takes best low light shots out there, 808 will remain the best camera phone, but that's not a big surprise. Nobody is buying 808 phone with huge hump on the back.
Anyways so far looking really good. Will likely order white Lumia 920 by the end of this week.

Thant is well and ok, but what happens in the scenarios that I mentioned?
So:
1. Phone is on standby
a: Skype call comes in and I pick up? Video?
b: New file gets uploaded to my skydrive (from other source)? (This in particular is very often for business user)
c: I receive a mail or other push item?
a skype question: when the phone is in standby, and you receive a skype call, once you answer the data should change from mobile data to wifi; does the switch disconnect you from the call? only asking because had this problem on android (not to mention the skype app crashes constantly too...)

Not bad for the Verge and their anti Microsoft stance. Higher score than I thought
The Wi-Fi and multitasking thing really sux man...Damn, I really would like to switch to lumia 920 or a WP8 device generally but I don't know. Probably just gonna get the nexus 4 in the end, price/specs/software is just better...Thing is, I just want a more unique device this time around. Might forgive those flaws though, we will see.

Dude, those are some GREAT pics!! I can't wait to get mine!
A More Balanced Review!
Phones 4u have done a rather decent review of the 920. Worth a watch.

Is this phone really THAT bad?

I've been waiting for the Lumia 920 to be back in stock at the H3G shop here in my town. Now it's back but I've been feeling some bad vibes around the forums lately. I hear about users having reboots, lockups, dead phones, dust underneath the ffc, bad battery life, buggy browser, lag, light leaks, creaks, herpes and whatnot, so this got me wondering...is this stuff mostly bs or there's actually something wrong with this phone? Has anyone regretted his purchase badly so far? Did the Portico actually help or it's just too little and too late? Please let me know, because reading all of this stuff really puzzled my will. Keep in mind that at this point Android is no longer an option for me, so the only other phone I could go for right now instead of this one would be the iPhone5. I wouldn't mind waiting for something else to come out, but honestly this 800 feels a bit EOL right now and I'd really like to drop it, my battery is also starting to suck a bit so...
Looking forward to hear from you guys, I'm really starting to feel that itch, I've been using this phone for almost a year now, this is kind of a record to me lol.
You are unshure ... why should you by excatly this phone?
You mentioned all the negative threads but you could finde more positive threads about this phone.
It's just your focus. Go into a shop and test the phone.
If you buy and it serves the first week in a good way you can keep it otherwise return it.
I'm happy with my Lumia 920
I have my Lumia 920 (AT&T) for two months and I really love it!
I got the Portico update I the very first day and during the first week of use my phone hung up once. I was worried just like you because I read in the forums many users complaining about the stability issues they had, but honestly that's the only issue I've had with this device! No light leaks, reboots, dust, lag, etc..
There is strange rattling sound when the phone vibrates, but it's nothing to worry about and I got used to it anyway.
Hope this helps
@Anis108: Actually I always liked the phone, I love the design, the sturdyness, the screen, the camera, wireless charging, Nokia goodies, and overall I'm just in love with the platform. However I'm also concerned about the reliability of the phone in the software department and I'm also concerned about how the thing can hold up through an extended period of time, since I'm planning on keeping it for a good while. Holding a phone in my hand for a few minutes can't really tell me much about these things, and even a week may not be enough to me, since I tend to be quite picky. Getting a new device is always a big leap of faith for me, especially on contract.
@Boshko: thanks, this is the kind of feedback I'm after...I just wanna hear the good, the bad and the ugly about this phone, because obviously reading topics made by people having issues will make the phone look bad, whereas those about how great the 920 is will gather mostly hardcore fans. I just wanna hear some random opinions to make up my mind here
AW: Is this phone really THAT bad?
Portico fixed my random reboots...
Sent from my Windows Phone 8S by HTC using XDA Windows Phone 8 App
I've had mine since it was released. Love it. Great design, functions beautifully. Haven't had any of the issues posted. I must be living right.
Have mine since it was released last October. No major problems. I've rebooted twice because I think something was sucking my battery too fast. Uninstalled couple of stock apps (stock portfolio, finance apps) and things are back to normal. Love the camera even though I don't use it everyday. Battery life is awesome for me - I routinely get close to two full days (about 40 hrs or more).
All in all, I'm a happy customer.
As far as forum problems, you have to remember that you're more likely to hear what's wrong with the device rather than the positive. Those who have problems come and post their issues so that they can be resolved with other people's help. If you are happy with device and have no problems, you're less likely to post your positive experience.
I'd say don't go by the forums - try the phone yourself and see if you like it or not.
My $0.02.
Using the phone for month and a half I can say it was a good purchase:
Depending on the use that you have intended for it, it may be what you are looking for.
If you are a person who likes to hack things, and wants to see how can you make the phone more customizable via tweaks and those stuffs, then this may not be the ideal for you as this thing is very encrypted and secure(for now).
If you are a corporate guy office and exchange will suit you because are optimized for the platform and consume very little battery.
If you are a globetrotter (travels a lot) then the GPS Navigation apps will suit you.
For the battery life there are two points:
on the first 2 weeks the battery will calibrate itself and you may see that after that time battery life is considerably better.
All the apps that runs on the background only runs for 2 weeks if not opened by you, WP8 has this by default, to enable background running again or to reset the counter just open the app (Microsoft did this for battery life)
I don't have dust on my ffc, camera is very good, phone is solid and at first feels kind of heavy but one gets used to it.
the WP8 is still an ongoing project, so many things are missing on the software side, but are on their way.
Overall I like this phone because I bought it and fulfilled my expectations: Sunlight readability, screen usable with gloves and true offline GPS Navigation, those are what I need for doing my job and the phone is very good at it.
The downsides: Some apps make the phone really hot (not optimized GPS Apps, like "Navigation 3D"), the battery consumption increases way more than other smartphones in low coverage areas and drains the phone quickly (30% more o less), still many software features missing.
So far after portico I have had 3 reboots(1 freeze but occurs on specific hardware calls, like turning "bluetooth on" on very rare conditions).
I plan to stick with this phone for a while, after 3 years with android I felt that the platform was not bringing nothing new, new physical design yes but the OS was always the same and nothing new since android 2.3.

Couldn't say it better..
I've had mine now for about 3 months. Came from (Smart phones) HTC OneX, HTC Evo 3d, Samsung Galaxy S, Moto POS, HTC G1. The 920 is without a doubt, for me, the best phone I've had yet. Everyone's analysis is subjective. Mine is no exception obviously. I will say only this. I have no qualms what-so-ever about recommending this phone to others. Both the hardware performance and the OS for me have been exceptional. Maybe I'm lucky or the exception.
Unfortunately, I'm one of the victims here. To start off, I LOVE this phone - I really do. It has everything I could want, and when it does work it is amazing (wireless charging, NFC, beautiful screen). However I personally am on my 3rd phone. The first 2 had problems locking-up forcing me to do the "power + volume-down" reset. The second phone also got a large piece of dust under the front camera. Fortunately, the 3rd one seems to be working. My wife is on her 2nd phone - same locking-up problem however hers only seemed to lock-up when being wirelessly charged. Now, a friend of mine who just got one is having the same wireless charging lock-up problem.
So I have to ask - what the hell is going on with this phone? By now, Nokia should have all of the "kinks" worked-out, Portico has been delivered and we're still seeing this crap? Oh - and I forgot to mention the "rattle" when vibrate is turned on. Grrr.....
I'm now using an HTC 8x for a while as I moved to China and haven't gotten my 920T yet, and guess what? The 8x works like a champ. Just wish I had wireless charging and more flash storage and I wouldn't go back to the 920T....
Is it just me or does it sound like that people that have flashed from a non stock ROM are the ones that are talking about the most issues? Is debranding and unlocking really worth all the issues this seems to be creating?
I have had mine stock for 3 months now and have not had one single issue that anyone in this entire 920 section has complained about. There is one very tiny light leak if I look down at the screen from the speaker end at an angle that I would never normally look from so it is irrelevant to me.
It just seems that the one common thing that most of these issues have is they are all on flashed phones.
I don't see the point of unlocking and debranding if the phone works for you as it is. We all know from past models that even unlocked there is very little you can do to one of these to customize it.
I have always been taught that if it is not broken, then don't fix it. If it works and does what it needs to as stock then why not leave it stock? Seems a lot more dependable that way to me.
I had rebooting Issues with me german Lumia 920 until I flashed it to the Austrian Portico ROM (I live in Austria). I didn't want to wait for the Update. But I have not had any issues since so flashing seems not to be the culprit. Many of the other issues did not occur on my phone at all.
I'm very happy with it since Portico . Before Portico I had some reservations but that was mainly due to the anxiety that it might reboot again (happened every few days).
Let me just tell you now, I am a perfectionist in the worst kind of way. I have issues with this phone but for some reason, they don't bother me. I'm willing to put up with them, I LOVE this phone so much. I have the light leaks but they're not apparent unless you put your eye very very close to the screen, in the dark and inspect the inside edges of the phone. If I press on the SIM card tray, the chassis of the phone creaks a bit but it's also the thinnest part of the phone so it makes sense. My phone locks up in standby every now and again so I have to reboot it but volume down + power but it only started happening AFTER the portico update. Also, ALL the Lumia 920's rattle when they vibrate because of the OIS in the camera. It's normal. I turned off vibration anyway, cause I don't like it.
I can tell you, the camera is NEXT-TO-NONE, stills and video. The call quality is excellent. The display is awesome and the durability is excellent and I love the cleanliness of the OS. NFC works on this phone the way it SHOULD work. Intuitively. I'm really good with phone as I used to work for a carrier but I couldn't for the life of me get NFC to work on my galaxy nexus, or my S3. They will be updating the phone this holiday season and it can only get better from here! :good:
I have no problems at all from mine. Fantastic device.
well the core functions work flawlessly as compared to other smartphones.
catches gps signal easily for me, camera starts in instance, typing is comfortable and more accurate than android and entire UI is fluid as opposed to android and iphone5 for me.
only problems are the light leak, battery life (but almost all phones have battery life issues unless u use blackberry on 2g signal).
and the dust settles between screen and chassis very easily.
I love mine, the camera is great so is the screen.
Don't have any of the problems that others have had, the only issue for me was once I updated the nokia apps to the here versions, my battery life died a death. a quick uninstall fixed that. but now I only have the map app, will try the others one at a time to find the culprit.

We were unable to determine the media usage rights for this content" error Lumia 920
Hello there , I need some help , I am new on the Lumia 920 ,I have downloaded through XBOX and paid music songs but now suddenly and after one month I cant listen
to these songs and get instead : "We were unable to determine the media usage rights for this content" error Lumia 920" Its DRM related I think...Does anyone have a fix ? thanks for the help and sorry if its the wrong thread...
Thanks for your insights guys. Actually I kinda made up my mind, I'm getting the 920 either tomorrow or early next week, still can't decide between white and black tho, any suggestions? Are there any differences in terms of durability?
No problems here.
Go into a hospital and you'll see people with problems, you shouldn't assume humans are rubbish.
Go onto a forum and you'll see people post with problems, you shouldn't assume everyone will have problems.

How are you enjoying your 920?

It will almost be a year since I got this phone, and I have to say its going well! Love the hardware and even the Nokia exclusive apps (coming from a Samsung and HTC windows phone). Sure there have been times where I found small defects in the device, but still love it! My question is how are you guys liking your Lumia so far?

Very good atm coming from android this OS is refreshing and its simplicity and out of the box performance is good imo. Less fragmentation regarding updates compared to android devices where OEM`s decide which devices are updated and which not. Wouln`t choose for a Samsung or HTC WP though, i see the Lumia`s to Microsoft as the Nexus`s are to Google. So overall very happy and i hope MS and Nokia keep up the good work and the app developers will come automaticaly as the OS grows and becomes more and more significant :good:
the best phone ever... almost 7 months using... fell couple of times without any damage (only damage on wooden floor )

I feel you Mine has also fallen (except on tile, lets just say that tile didn't do well ;P) . As for the Lumia's being Microsoft's "Nexus line" it's defiantly true! I wonder if MS taking over Nokia's Mobile division would have any impact in security Microsoft maybe less careful leaving Diagnostic tools and such on the phone than Nokia currently is! (More Exploits?).

I've got the choice between the 920 and the HTC One for my upgrade this month. Leaning towards the 920 due to its old style Nokia strength from what I've heard haha

I have bought the phone a week ago. I really like Windows phone. I would like more games at the market!!!
Well I'm not currently "enjoying" it. It's out for repair for the fourth time now. After the second time I sent it back I received a refurb, which was all kinds of screwed up: bad soft keys lighting, screen burn-in in two spots, loose battery, and after a few days the earpiece started malfunction. I sent it the third time and it came back working, then it broke again. Now I really hope that they don't send me back the same unit, if that happens I won't even bother turning it on, and just keep using my "backup", the Ativ. I really hate the build and I'm not great fan of AMOLED but at least it works.

Yeah that's a cool plus, however we don't have much to toy with for the moment, just a couple of tweaks

Haha Still a great plus! New stuff is coming out every day! I'm trying to look for exploits in the L920 (I know some people are going to say your a Junior Member you can't do that stuff" I've actually been on the forums since '09 just never made a account, plus it's a challenge I want to push myself to do for fun )
I like it, but my GF does not it as she cannot use it as a vibrator. too weak. LOL.

Just dropped my HTC One and thought I'd give the Lumia a try. I will say the Lumia 920 has a better camera, and that's a very meaningful claim considering how the HTC One was marketed as having such an innovative camera. The HTC One camera does have a few features no other camera can touch, but the Lumia has seriously better *dynamic range* which makes images look so much better, especially people's faces.
Otherwise, well, I'm sorry to say this, but: Windows Phone is great, just not "great enough". It is about as good as Android or iOS in terms of usability and not as good in terms of app store.
So, having owned both phones I would definitely say go with an HTC One unless the camera matters to you (or you have some kind of all-Microsoft work environment or other reasons why WP can be a totally obvious choice).
Got the One. Spent too much in the Play store to just drop Android

I'd get the One too if I was going android. But the windows phone does what I want on a daily basis beautifully. Better than ios or android. Which is : telephone, email, enterprise outlook calendar, SMS, photos, Netflix, Hulu, Turn by turn Navigation. Definitely miss YouTube but YouTube has gotten boring lately and I don't miss it anymore. I don't even visit it on my computer. Social media hub is awesome and the best thing for a busy professional.
PS: the people/contact hub is the best thing I have experienced, and the synchronization with your SkyDrive is awesome.
The one compelling reason for using the Windows phone is the messaging over Bluetooth. Best thing since sliced bread and for texting while driving. Suck it IOS and android. You have to experience it to appreciate this feature.
And while I am at it: Lockscreen with weather and calendar + glance clock.

Android has lockscreen weather and calendar. Moto X now has glance (they call it "active display"). But you are *absolutely right* about that bluetooth text-to-speech feature. I just discovered this the other day and was amazed. My car talks to me now and somehow knows exactly the right thing to do and I never had to set up anything other than pairing it. Indispensable. Huge benefit in terms of safety and convenience. It *may* be possible to get this in android somehow but it was already set up and ready to go in WP8. Why other platforms don't work harder on this I don't know.

One day I took out some friends to lunch in my car and I got a text message come in. The whole interaction was so beautiful that they were shocked at how easily I could text and drive. Interestingly they all assumed it was a feature of my $50K Mercedes Benz. Poor iphone fanboys. Little do they know :cyclops:

Dat feel...phone feels like it's made of butter, it chips by looking at it, and the edges are getting dented as fuq, all of this just by laying in my cup holder. Can't wait to have my 920 back, the Ativ felt kinda ok at the beginning, but it got old real quick, like physically old, srs.
Hey guys, i am thinking of buying 920 and i was wondering about the sound in headphones? Are u happy with it? Or is it too quiet?
