Basically make sure your doing the GB Bootloaders and recovery at the right time and proper way

The upshot is that every time you use this file to go back to stock, you should odin the GB bootloader again at some point during your process. I generally like to do this:
1. odin CI500blahblahblah.tar. reboot and let it come up.
2. power off and go back into odin. now do the gb bootloader. use PDA, check "update bootloader." reboot and let it come up.
3. power off and go back into odin. now do the old cwm for CM7 recovery. 3-finger reboot directly to that recovery (don't let stock rom boot or it will blow away that recovery you just flashed).
4. flash whatever ROM you are going to from that recovery.
5. Profit.
i actually do all my odin stuff without any reboots and never boot into stock. i flash all odin packages and then go straight to 3 finger recovery.
ThanksThanks

It used to be important to let it boot through the stock recovery if you were re-partitioning the device, because the ext4 partitions were then built on top of the stock ones. ODIN couldn't create the MoviNAND partitions if they were corrupted, but the stock recovery could.
The new LVM formatter might be able to handle it, I'm not sure.

Can't flash ROMs no matter what i do

Im coming from 2.3.2 - XWJV1 [Gingerbread on Vibrant], after ODIN, and when i wanted to flash the latest Bionix i got an error
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
every time i get this, i have to do another ODIN because it just does a loop in the android system recovery and will not get out, so i had to ODIN 3 times.
now when i try to flash a ROM it just keeps replacing stock recovery with clockwork mod recovery, i do the usual steps to install a ROM and it just does a loop. i tried different clockwork flash versions and either it wont let me install the older ones or the only 2 versions that work have loop problems.
HOW DO I FIX THIS, IM SO STRESSED OUT, THIS IS UNNECESSARY!
after doing install rom from sd option, i was able to get out of the loop but i got
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
i still cant flash anything and i already tried eugenes files.
got into clockwork but when i put install files from sd card > choose from sd then it when i choose update.zip it just goes back to the android system recovery.
then i put reinstall files from the android system recovery and it just sends me back to clockwork recovery...
Try a diff. tar for when you Odin, you may have a corrupt file. Have you try Eugen JK2 tar file, prerooted?
Are you clicking reinstall packages?
Are you going through clockwork or rom manager?
Did you install the root update zip to reroot?

Odin back to JFD (make sure to check repartition) then boot and let it go through loading, then root the phone, Then load CWM, then load your new rom and load from recovery NOT CWM, you will have no problems.

Ok I just went through this less than a month ago with my captivate. I have a twenty page topic on this EXACT issue. I had all the major devs pming me and doing everything under the sun for probably a total of thirty hours. Result - NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS. This issue is not specific to our phones, there have been cases of this on almost every android phone. Your gonna get people telling you to do all this elementary trouble shooting...the problem is far too deep dont waste your time. You can flash back to stock with every tar and pit file this side of samsung...not gonna work. SOMETHING is not getting wiped. Save yourself the time and sell the phone to someone who will not use custom roms.
Also no rm/wipe command through abd is gonna help either! Sorry just telling you from someone who experienced this hell. Also every thread in existence on the internet on this subject has died out without an answer. If you read for enough hours you will find out the hard way! Good luck my friend!

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Are you able to re install the original rom? I and many others with this issue had that unique problem of being able to install ONLY the rom that was running before everything went to hell. There lies the key I believe to all of this. What makes only one work.

If you are not willing to accept the risk then you shouldn't be flashing roms at all. [q] cwm 3.0.2.8

Hey all,
Totally went back to stock...so started with DL09 and then proceeded up to ED04. I installed CWM (red) and rebooted into it and then rooted my phone. Worked great...this morning decided to wipe the battery stats...now it just goes to the Samsung (blue) recovery one. I decided to reflash with ODIN and it still just gives me the Samsung one. Any ideas on how to get this working again???
It sounds like your flash may have failed. Maybe try it again. It might be easier and more reliable to use heimdall in this situation as well.
Also, I know it's early, but this is a question and should be posted in the appropriate section.

You have to download this and ODIN to the phone ...

Heimdall works like Odin. Cwr is being overwritten by the stock kernel, you should flash a custom kernel if you want cwr to stick.

You may have to flash a custom kernel to get your recovery permanent. I did the same thing to get the ed04 ota.
1. Flash the dl09 tar file in odin, don't reboot.
2. Flash the cwm3 odin file of your choice, don't reboot.
3. Boot into recovery using the 3 finger salute (should be the one you just odined).
4. Flash the custom kernel of your choice & reboot.
That should keep it rooted & keep cwm available to you, at least it did for me. The key, fwig, is to repalce the stock kernel cuz that is what will replace cwm when it boots.

Problem with recovery

Why do I have such a problem with recovery on my phone. It seems that regardless of what I'm flashing I have a problem with the phone rebooting into recovery. At least since ICS first came out, maybe earlier, when I'd flash a rom, alot of the time it would reboot into recovery and I'd have to ODIN back to stock and reflash. I flashed PB 3 without any problems but I tried PB4 and it would not boot beyond recovery. It seems to do it in CWM and Devil. I restored to a backup of AOKP and still recovery, which is currently Devil. What am I doing wrong or what do I need to do? I also have a problem keeping it from booting into safe mode, when it does boot. Any suggestions?
From what I can gather from your post it really appears that you are flashing things wrong. First things first, read droidstyle's guide on hoe to flash rooms properly. Couple other notes to keep in mind, once you are on cm7, ics, or jellybean you cannot just go into recovery and flash a touchwiz rom. You also cannot three finger boot into recovery anymore.

I haven't gone back to TW in a long time. As far as flashing wrong, I may be but I'll download the rom, boot into recovery, wipe, wipe, and sometimes wipe again. Then flash rom. When I do ODIN back I push the stock EC09 I think it is (I'm on a different computer), Atlas 2.2. Let it fully boot, shut it down. Then push CWM fixed for CM7. Immediately boot into recovery with the 3-finger method (the only time I use the 3-finger). I flash THS ICS Version 2. Allow it to boot then flashed whatever AOKP is latest. What have I been doing wrong?
At what point does it get stuck in recovery, is it after you flash aokp or after you try to restore a backup?

Usually after I flash aokp, or another rom. If all I'm doing is doing a restore it's ok. Now I've flashed jt's JB and I can't keep it from booting in safe mode.
This morning after a full charge I booted into recovery to wipe battery stats because I was having poor battery life. I'm running JT's JB by the way. When I rebooted it booted into safe mode. I tried pulling the battery and still safe mode. It took me rebooting 8 times before it did not go into safe mode. What could be causing it? I must be doing something wrong.
It could be a hardware issue or corrupt files. I know this may sound obvious, but I would Odin back to stock a d follow droidstyles guide exactly and start over. Do a fresh install of everything and reinstall all apps. Don't restore backups or anything. This will give you some clues.

That may be part of my problem. I've read and re-read that and the only thing I'm not doing is checking repartition when I Odin to stock. When I do, Odin hangs up at the beginning and will not do anything else. It works fine when I uncheck repartition. I'm doinloading a new copy of Odin on a different computer and am going to try.

I have read and understood the guides, but from experience, you can't always just ODIN back to stock and have it work.
I found that ODIN'ing back to stock, from a rom that had voodoo lagfix enabled, seems to somewhat brick the phone. Where the after the successful ODIN flash, the install script doesn't run properly, and the phone gets stuck at a black screen.
To fix, you have to hunt down EUGENE's unbrickable rom, because for some reason, his ODIN package works and gets your phone working. Then you have flash back to stock. But EUGENE's rom is hard to find, because it is not hosted anywhere anymore.
Is there anything like this I have to watch out for when downgrading from jellybean and ICS? I haven't been around for this transition.
As long as you have the Odin files and know what your doing, go ahead and flash.
Then if something goes wrong, we can look at the symptoms and treat it accordingly.
It should go well, if it doesn't give us a shout.

I think you have read the misfortunes of others that probably didn't read before they flashed etc. I'm not real familiar with voodoo lagfix but I haven't heard of it causing Odin problems. And none of the ICS or JB ROMs have it. Another thing, if you are using Odin, coming back to stock from ICS or JB, you need to check the repartition box.
I will try to find Eugene's for you.

It's fairly straight forward. First flash it to stock Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2
Put this temporary CWM "update.zip" into the internal storage of the phone. Also put in the rom you want to flash. (If on Froyo you might need to run the 3e_recovery_installer first.)
Boot into recovery. Depend on the bootloader its either both Volumes + Power button, or Volume Down and Power.
Flash the update.zip twice, the green CWM screen will appear.
Wipe data and cache.
Flash your the rom. You might get an error, flash it again, the general behavior is it will permanently install a new version CWM and reboot, then stuck at the logo. Remove insert the battery, boot into recovery again and you will see the new version of CWM. Flash the rom again for the third time and it will work.
*If flashing the rom don't work and it doesn't install CWM, then do incremental upgrade. First by flashing CM7, then flash CM10.
Hey eksasol, I like the easy breakdown but he is going from JB using Odin to stock......

[Q] How to Remove Cyanogenmod 11 and go back to stock. [Galaxy Player 5.0 US]

I flashed this with Cyanogenmod 11 soon after I got it 2 months ago. Well times are tough and I have to sell it on eBay. I want to remove Cyanogenmod 11 and revert back to stock. I know the thread where the stock ROM and PIT files are (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192488) so thats half the battle there. Is it the same process as this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850) or is there something else I need to do. Do I have to install GA APPS like you do with custom ROMs or is that not needed
This is all pretty new to me. I know how to flash custom ROMs and such but flashing the stock ROM seems tricky to me. Sorry if this has all been covered so many times that it makes you tired of seeing this, I just have to be sure I do this right and dont brick it (cant sell a paper weight on eBay for too much money lol).
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all the hardwork that goes into making these ROMs as well
EDIT: Can I flash the stock ROM with the US Kernal, US PIT file and 2.3.5 gapps like I did with Cyanogenmod 11 or is that impossible?
Again sorry for the newbie question!

I think after flashing a factory firmware by Odin, the device will AUTOMATICALLY boot into stock recovery, where you can wipe data in the correct format. At least that's what it said in the guide I read, and also happens on my Player 4.0 for both Froyo and Gingerbread.

Well since you're getting mount errors, are you sure you flashed the correct PIT file? Mount errors are likely caused by a wrong pit file.
EDIT: I see you have pointed to a thread with correct PIT files. So I think you should flash the PIT file first, boot into download again and then flash the Stock ROM and Kernel. If it boot loops at the boot animation, boot into the stock recovery and wipe data.
