[Q][XPU] GPS after .153 ICS Update - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hello folks,
can anyone confirm if their gps locking works as well as it did in the last version of ICS. I used to get a lock within 10 seconds and after the update it takes as long as 5 minutes. I flashed b.1.10 2 and .154 2 times just to check and it seems .154 has the problem and not 1.10.
Anyone else here facing the same issue?

Try initial lock
I am on GB 2.3.7 so I can't really say. But when I was on ICS B.10, my first lock took 10 minutes and then it was down to 30sec-1min
Download an app called Android Speedometer to find out about satellite status. Do a factory reset and then leave your phone with GPS on
outside for around 20 min to get a first fix. Then it should work fine. Also try procuring the right gps.conf file for your country. I don't know how
to do that, but try searching the forums.
Hope I helped..........

Re:
Even I had the same issue. I'd advice you open gps.conf in system/etc folder and edit the NTP servers with ones which are closer to you Also use GPS Toolkit from Market to clear all previous data and download new AGPS data. The first lock might be slow but future locks will be much faster Best of Luck !
Cheers

Help! GPS has stopped working (t-mobile uk)

Hi there - wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can help me. Have seen some similar-ish threads dating back many months but nothing exactly seems to answer this
Until last week, the GPS on my S2 was working fine. Always locked pretty quickly etc.
But for the last week or so, I cannot seem to get a GPS fix AT ALL. I have tried restarting, clearing the aGPS data, etc. etc.
I have installed GPS Status and GPS Aids from the marketplace as recommended in some places. GPS Status shows many satellites being detected in grey, but nothing locks on to them. My phone is not rooted so I have not tried to alter settings etc. as yet, as not really sure this is the problem as I have not changed anything recently. (Could t-mobile have done something on their end that is causing it maybe.. ??)
I am running stock ICS on t-mobile.
Any illumination anyone could offer would be most appreciated!
many thanks
Have you flashed any rom?

Even if it was a carrier update, no need to be a custom rom.
I use GPS-Test to "test" my GPS, can you please install it tell us what is the biggest SNR you get?
I think you will only get a lock if you have at least 3 sats with SNR above 30.

i was using gps status and aid like you did. didnt work till i tried gps test plus.
Many thanks for all the replies
@arc Have not flashed a ROM, just using stock ROM which got upgraded automatically to ICS from gingerbread a few months ago
@zedread Installed GPS Test and tried it briefly just now. Get 7-9 satellites with SNRs of between 20 and 40. All of them stay grey and none of them get used for locking. This is similar to what I have seen in GPS status etc. (i.e. it seems to find satellites but does not proceed to try and lock any of them...all of them always stay grey)
@happily can you advise what it is in GPS Test Plus that helped? Just got the free version at the moment.
Anyone have any more ideas?
Many thanks
Try FasterFix from Google Play Store.....good luck.

[Q] GPS performance issues Australia

Hey Guys,
Loving my galaxy s3 however something strange is now happening. I used to live in Brisbane and recently moved to Sydney, whilst I was in Brisbane I often used the GPS and google maps navigation (google navigation whatever you want to call it ) and it performed amazing! it locked onto location instantly and would guide me and track my position superbly.
Now I've been in Sydney for 3 days, and I tried to use the navigation several times and it was terrible! It would take a minute or two to lock onto my position but would still be fairly innacurate and would not engage the navigation, just sat in that screen where it is zoomed out and roughly shows the route to take, sometimes it would engage into the navigation but then would stop tracking me and just say it lost GPS location.
Has anyone experienced this problem? or know what I can do to fix it!! Thanks
Couple of suggestions:
Have you changed your Google location? Whenever I've changed ROM's I get asked to let Google use my location - maybe there is something in the Google set up that still thinks you are in Brisbane and has to keep scanning for your new location?
Have you got the map for Sydney - I know you can get maps on your phone but maybe only your home location is auto-downloaded, so you get a zoomed out version for other places? Maybe go into the Maps app and select Sydney and see if it brings down a more detailed version?
Maybe check for Maps/Navigation updates? I got a Maps one a few days back.
I hope this helps - not sure at all if any of them are applicable but it is what I'd be checking...
For the google location, I sort of reset it, I turned it off (the option to let google use your location) and turned it back on. Not sure what else you can do in that department.
Ive got the map for sydney and my maps and navigation are up to date! Thanks for the suggestions but, its just really frustrating as it used to work so well
Use either GPS test or GPS status to see how well your GPS is working. Both are available free in market. They will also download agps data to help with a faster fix.
Check that you do have satellites switched on in settings.
If you are rooted you could try the wildfire agps patch. I think it is posted in the development thread.

thanks for the suggestion! just downloaded GPS status and one of the reviewers had the same issue that was resolved by clearing and downloading agps data (just like you mentioned). So will try tonight and hopefully problems will be gone, thanks!

That method always worked for me on the S2 when I was in a different location. Takes seconds to reload the new data.

I can't really help but my s3 in sydney has almost instant lock, except when in a tunnel.
By a strange quirk of fate I have just experienced the same issue that you faced.
After a lot of frustration I found a simple fix.
Turn off GPS and other location settings in main settings, power of and reboot. Switch everything back on in settings and all should be well again.
Hope this, belatedly, helps.

If you are on a custom ROM then the first line of the GPS.conf file in system/etc will be set to "north-america.pool.ntp.org". Change the "north-america" part to "au" and restart. Then reset/redownload gaps data.using GPS status. Hope this helps.

GPS does not work (tried everything)

Hello,
I am using SGH-i777 outside USA (in Kosovo). I purchased it unlocked so everything works as expected, except GPS. The phone came with Gingerbread (not rooted). I tried GPS through google maps but i was getting "You location is temporarily unavaliable" and the scan was taking ~10 minutes without any results. Applications such as AccuWeather were also not able to find my location.
After this dissapointment, i decided to root the phone and install a custom ROM. I followed the guide posted at this link and followed the steps there 100% without making any changes/mistakes. I installed the Siyah 2.6 Kernel and the ROM that i choose to install was Aberration. I also followed the guides for this and did everything as advised. I turned the phone on but the GPS was still behaving the same. After this, i purchased GPS Doctor and clicked "Quick Fix". After this i downloaded GPS Test to see if the signal was alive, and after ~2 minutes of scanning, GPS Test found around 7 satellites and the signal appeared green within this app. I followed this by opening Google Maps and i got the correct location after ~2 minutes scan. This made me happy and i believed the GPS issue got fixed. But after trying after few hours, i saw that maps was again facing the same issues and apps that require location access were not being able to do so.
And the last step that i did was install a gps fix as posted on this thread. I know this thread states that they do not officially support sgh-i777, but i was out of options so i had to try something else. I followed all the instructions and downloaded and installed the Google Specific v 1.3 from that website. But this did not fix the problem either.
To conclude; the GPS is simply not working as expected. Finding the location takes to long and i was able to get the location in Google Maps only 10% of the time (my old iPhone 3gs finds the location in 3seconds!). I have tried this indoors and outdoors but the problem remains the same. During all the times, Wi-Fi, GPS and Data were turned on
Currently i have un-rooted the phone (followed the guides here) and am currently running the official ICS which i installed through Odin. Tried GPS again and it still does not work.
Sorry for the long thread but i wanted to explain all the details.
Hope someone can help me.
Looks to me like one of 2 problems:
1) You're not getting a good time from NTP server, try downloading FasterFix and selecting your area (need root). Not very likely, since with good GPS you'll still have a fix within 1-2 min.
2) HW problem, possibly antenna contacts.
So any go around for hardware problem?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
HW problems are solved in HW. You can't "go around" and make the bulbs light in your house when the power has been cut off, can you? So how exactly can you "go around" a bad contact with antenna, that practically equals a missing antenna?
Just fix it.
In settings under location services did you check "use internal GPS" ?
Not even sure if aberration has that option. Jelly Bean ROMs do.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
All the ROMs do. It's a stock Android option, equals to toggling the "GPS" toggle on in pull-down toggles.
And of course if he didn't have it toggled, he wouldn't see any satellites at all.
Plus, the original post is 2 months old. I believe the OP has already solved the problem or moved on.

[Sola] CM9 GPS Issue/ Help needed.

Hi everyone.
I've recently flashed back to fxp's 151 cm9 couse i got enough from stock rom, even after clenup.
The reason i got back to stock is that on cm9 it took abot 15-30 minutes to fix gps sats, sometimes no fix at all.
I really love cm9 couse there is nothing else alike, not even close, but even in fxp151 no change on gps.
BTW tryed to modify the gps.conf to my country (Israel), NO luck.
Can anyone please configure something with that???
Hope for your help guys...
anyone, please...
Download "GPS test" from play store, go to settings and clear A-GPS and check "keep screen on". After that, leave phone somewhere with a clean view to sky for 5 minutes.
Now you can watch what is actually going on while locking signal.
Download GPS test, go to settings and check leave screen on, clear A-GPS data and update A-GPS data.
Leave the phone somewhere with a clear view to the sky, window is OK also if you can see the sky. After 10 minutes check what you can see on the main screen.
You should see something like this:
I've noticed that on CM9 GPS doesn't work as it works on b.10 (Xperia U) where it needs only few seconds to lock signal but it works.
Just leave it for 15-20 minutes and it will lock. That screenshot is from CM9.
Is your 3G activated when you run your GPS scans?
No luck either
I have a very similar problem with my xperia u.
I recently rooted the phone and once I had it up and running I checked everything including the GPS. It was a little slow but still got a positive lock. The next day, boom, no gps and none since.
Things I've tried:
Unrooting
Soft restore
Hard reset
Toggling flightmode/bluetooth on and off
I even took the back off and made sure the antenna was connected properly.
With the back cover off I was able to get 4 very weak signals in places where I usually get lock in under a minute
I've left it out with the GPS Status tool running for at least 30 minutes and no luck.
I'm running ICS 4.0.4
My personal theory is that something has screwed the antenna cause it just seems to be getting zero signal.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I got it working!!!!!
I think I cracked it!!!
Just to cover all my bases I relocked the boot loader. Now I get signals and a lock! I don't know what on earth the boot loader lock has to do with the GPS but apparently there is enough to prevent the signals.
Hope this helps people in the threat a bit.
Still got problems
Use an application called fast GPS. It's on the play store

Slow gps fix?

I have a p760 and I found gps performance are very bad without agps.
To get an offline fix it took 10+ minutes, in the same conditions my old acer s120 got it in less than 2 minutes.

I have similar problem, fix is slow and not stable, even with agps, using nav aps in car is imposible.
I've installed GPS Status to help fix faster but it didnt helped much.
Any one found a solution for this?
I have the same problem, fix is fast but GPS connection is not stable. Tried install another navigation but doesn't work.
If youre rooted try to install this app FasterGPS
Thanks is much better, but not perfect. Connected with 6-10 satellite have low quality signal(in GPS test ~20 SNR), localization is not ideal. Any ideas ? Sorry for my english
Also, if your rooted, I recommend Pimp My Rom (alpha) from the Play Store. It has lots of useful tweaks, but it also allows you to get the correct GPS config file for your country. As my phone was from Taiwan, it would have the config files for that country and not the UK - where I am. Correct location = Faster connection.
You just get the app then move to the 'Tools' tab then scroll to the bottom, One up from that should be the GPS Configuration, choose your region then country and 'Apply Selected Tweak'. It only takes a few seconds and it makes sure your GPS is configured for your country.
Hopefully this helps out.
I just geve up with fixing GPS, i factory reseted the device, and even uploaded software using "emergency software recovery" from LG tool to try all options, but no success.
Today phone was sent to the service center. Now waiting for the results.
==========================================================
Phone is back from service, and it works now
Fix in less then 10 sec and stable.
Service center replaced back side of the phone (not the battery cover ), there are aerials there i think.
