[Q] Deleted movie from gallery, still taking up space? - HTC Droid DNA

I just got the DNA the other day to replace my crappy Charge. I decided to load a 1080p movie (Iron Man 2 to be exact) to see how it looked. The movie took up about 7.4GB, and it looked fantastic. I decided I'd like to install Asphalt 7 which is huge, and to put some music on it so I just deleted the movie from the gallery app. However it doesn't appear to have actually gone away, the storage meter shows that I only have 2GB of free space. That seems odd since I don't really have anything on the phone and that 7.4GB should be freed space, the gallery no longer shows the movie either. Any suggestions?

Not rooted, didn't even know we could root yet. I literally just got the phone. I do have Astro and it'll show me the amount of storage each folder is taking up, however all it can see doesn't even come close to adding up to the 10GB I'm supposedly using.

I got it. Doing a hard restart did the trick (unchecking fast boot in settings/battery). I now have over 8GB available. Weird little glitch there.
I've had more than one weird little glitch with this phone since I got it. When I first started using it it wouldn't play music from any app or ring, but it would play sounds. After about 4 restarts it started working perfectly.

Yeah I think I read somewhere else that it still keeps it in memory somewhere until you restart the phone. Not really sure why but someone else has mentioned that before. Seems kind of weird that they would do that considering we only have 11gbs to use in the first place lol

That is dumb. I like the fast boot function though. I guess from now on I'll just have to delete stuff from the computer or Astro. Man watching a 1080p video on this thing is epic though. Netflix won't stream that high yet (and understandably so, there's only one phone that could use it), but it still looks pretty good.

Disabling Media Scanner

Does anyone know how to disable the media scanner, that runs on every boot?
I don't want to uninstall it, because sometimes you'll need to run it manually to detect new media files, but I don't want it running on every startup
I thought it was necessary so it can see what you have on your SD card?

Is this your first samsung phone? It always runs at the start by design in every samsung android phone, as far as i know there is nothing you can do about it unless a dev can find a way to change it in a custom rom.

Media Scanner is a process and just like any other process it either runs as a service, or invoked by some init.* startup script. I'm simply asking for guidance how to modify phone configuration to disable the startup of this process.
Contents of /sdcard are cached, so the only price you pay if it doesnt run is that it wont see any changes, occured since it was last active. If you dont add/remove files on your phone all that frequently - disabling it wont have much impact and it will noticeably improve startup performance
Back in the captivate days there was a script that as created to disable this but it proved to be more of a hinderence than a help, I don't recommend it. But if you really insist search the threads over there and see if you can find it. Who knows it may work maybe with a mod here or there
Rescan Media Root from the Market will disable the media scanner.
iirc Nitrality in the market can disable media scan too

I disagree. I added a 32 GB card a few days ago, nearly full with songs, and my time from power button to lock screen didn't change at all. Yes, the scan takes a while and doesn't finish until well after the lock screen appears but it is a background process. It doesn't prevent you from using the device.

Can you use the camera though?
I too have a 32 Gb card installed with a mixture of films, music and apps. My media scanner can take 2-3 hours to run and whilst I can use the phone for most things, it does prevent me from viewing photos and more critically taking photos.
I have on numerous occations not be able to take photos of the kids doing something funny, hours after unplugging my Note and it is very inconvenient at work when I need to take a photo of a business card or reciept or something.
To me this is a serious flaw on a device which is, as much as a phone, my on the go camera - and not a welcome feature of my first android phone!
I have tried a couple of methods (apps) but most of these seem to fill my notification area with adverts!

Wow. Could there be somethinks wrong with your sd card? Have you switched it from using on one device for a while to your note? I have 23gb out of 29 gb available filled with 10gb of that being music and 3gb of pics and my start up media scan takes about a minute max. Maybe not even that long. I initially had a 16gb card that i used in my LG thrill that when i switched to the not would take forever to scan. It eventually quit working so i bought the 32 and no problems now.

2-3 hours is ridiculous.
What class card are you using? You may need to upgrade to a faster card.

Run this in Terminal Emulator or Adb Shell:
Code:

pm disable com.android.providers.media.MediaScannerReceiver
an app can help you
You should try this:

But i do agree maybe an upgrade of your sd cards class...

I suggest formatting your card or replacing it. Bad sectors can cause funny stuff to happen. I couldn't even copy files using a card reader till I formatted it. Warning. This will erase all you files from the card, but you will have a clean slate to start.

Before erasing put the card in an adaptor and copy your stuff to a pc.

Well,on my NOTE, I cannot use the camera until Media Scanner Runs off round the corner - if I just unlock my phone (even when it is on) to take a photgraph, then I get this annoying message and the camera turns itself OFF repeatedly... finally the photo opportunity has gone... buggerit!

[Q] Mediaserver suddenly taking too much battery in LWW, any clue?

This forum is flooded with too much ICS issues. I've a problem apart from that. Recently I found in battery status that mediaserver is taking too much battery.
On an average my battery goes about 12 hrs with heavy use. recently I copied some 3gp and flv files in my 2gb card sizing about 500mb in total. after that my battery is lasting for only 7-8 hrs without any use! when I check battery status it shows 50-60% battery has been taken by mediaserver. to confirm my doubt I then deleted all the videos and recharged again. now media server only takes 2-5%!
strange,na?
Are you using ICS or Gb? Maybe the gallery application has something to do with it which is causing these unusually high drainage.
obviously strange, haven't seen such problem ever.

I'm still on GB. and yes i also think its related to gallery app because when I've these videos on my memory card then gallery takes minutes to load pics and viseos. most of the time it does not even show the pics and some time it shows thumbs of of pics that i've already deleted. first i thought as .flv file cant be played witout help of other app so system is trying to read .flv files and using battery. but it's not. even when there's only 3gp files then tha problems happed. i think a reset will help. but backing up everything is a pain

Oh! It's creating a loop in the media server when accessing the movies as you have mentioned. When the media server tries to read a file and if it fails, it reads it again and again. This is device specific bug bcoz this doesn't happen in aosp android. Update to ICS and see if anything improves or not.

Please Help, If you can...S3 is deleting pix by itself...

Ok, so last night I went to my aunt's 50th b-day party. I took some pix and a couple videos. This morning I go to reveiw them, and I can clearly see them in my gallery. I open a video to watch, and then get a "sorry video cannot be played" message about 3 seconds into the video, then it's closes the video. I'm returned to my gallery where I can still see the pix and video, the the screen flashes and now I can't see any of the pix or videos .....Is there anyway or any program I can use to recover these lost treasures of mine that my phone thought I wouldn't want. I have connected both the phone and my card to my PC and cannot find the files anywhere
Are u rooted? Are you on a custom Rom
Sent from my Galaxy S3
Yes I am rooted and running the blazer ROM 1.3
????
Have you tried transferring the files to pc or uploading to dropbox?
There have been times where i download or capture a small video and it doesn't show up in gallery until i reboot the device.
this isn't completely crazy, a friend has a Droid X and it did this exact thing to her with video and pictures... stock never rooted or anything internal memory, I've never had any issues at all with it on any of the three android devices I've had though.
I always hv the dropbox mobile upload on. With 50gb of cloud storage you should take advantage of it

I was reviewing them to see which ones I wanted to save. And while in my gallery view, the blinked and I guess reloaded itself, and all of the pix and videos from the night before, were gone. I connected the phone to my pc, and nothing....I took my sd card out and put it in my pc, and still, nothing..... It's as if they never existed

Might wanna try a file recovery program on the sd card to see if you can get them back.

Why is Gallery so SLOW!!??

I first saw this on my wife's S3 and now I have the same thing on my Note 2. Whenever I go into the Gallery app, it is so extremely slow. I thought it was building indexes or something, but my Thunderbolt wasn't this slow. I have searched around and can't find anything.
I do have images on an extSD card, but even before I put the card in the pics I took on camera were slow to come up. I can use other apps like quic pic but I don't think S-pen works with other apps.
Anyone else seen this?
EDIT: It appears the S-Pen works fine in quic pic. I was able to select and copy to clipboard just fine. I would still like to know why Gallery is so slow though.
hmm I'd call mine quite fast. I have 42 local pictures already and it that album and facebook ones instantly and when I click local, the pictures all pop right up instantly. Have you noticed reads/writes from your memory being slow with anything else?

My phone overall is very fast. It is just the gallery. The fact that I saw it on my wife's S3 made me wonder. I even moved her pics off of her extSD card and onto her internal memory. Then I reformatted her card. I also reformatted my card in the phone before putting the pics back on it. Quic Pic works like a champ, so I believe it has to be Gallery.
No issues here with opening gallery, pics taken from phone or photos on memory card. Also my s3 was fast.
Yep, mine too. I have a lot on my card, when i open the gallery it shows a bunch of gray squares that should be the folder names.it takes forever to show thumbnails for some reason. Never had this on my S3
I have 6000+ pictures separated into 50+ albums all stored on my 64gb xdhc and its fast. for an album of more than 600 pics, the gray boxes turn to thumbnails quick enough to keep up with my scrolling.
I'm in the same boat as the OP.... It takes quite a long time to load up my pictures in my gallery. Quite annoying...
use a ultra high speed sd card an it will help with gallery speed. i have a 64gb sandisk that reads 50mb/s...

I have had the same problem since owning the S3 and now the GN2. I have about 6gb of photos on my internal storage and a couple gb on my sd card.
I have been able to figure out that it's something with my home network. Try to turn off Wifi and then open Gallery on all 3 of my Sammy phones the gallery is instantly fast.
PS Someone also told me to disable Tag Buddy and Face Tag as well.
Motorola is similar yo this except that the moto gallery pinch room is choppy. Quick pic fixes. Its something about the ui that makes it drag along on the gallery. Hopefully they address it because my old gs2 didn't really have that issue.
Same issues with gallery sometimes
I've noticed some slowdown on the gallery but mostly when other apps try to access it.
Like if i try to look at the gallery from picsay or something.
I notice the camera folder shows up right away but it hangs on the other folders.
I have it showing all my facebook photos too. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
And I have noticed its quite hit or miss. Sometimes its instant sometimes it hangs.
It is quite weird when the phone is so fast.
I would love to know what is causing it.

If it's looking for facebook albums, it could be data connection that's affecting the speed.

I haven't found a way. I went into facebook sync and unchecked "sync gallery" and changed the gallery sync interval to never, then went and cleared all data from the gallery but it went through and downloaded them all over again.
Did you try changing the sd speed? I switched from the default 128k to 2048 and my galleries load as fast as I can scroll

I too have this issue. It would be worth trying what LordRalh3 mentions. Dont know if this is going to help. I had several pictures on internal memory until I remembered to install my external 32gb card, it is slow both ways.
I had the same issue, and found that gallery was caching a ton of data. Over 2 gigs the first day! I cleared it, and again the next day it began caching data again. I have resorted to disabling the app, and I am in the process of wiping to see if that helps. I will let you know what happens.
Stock gallery is bull****. Better is quickpic i use it nearly 1 year
Wiping did not help. Gallery still as slow as molasses. I will report back on cached data. How would I go about changing the sd speed?
I just changed the sd speed to 2048. There was no difference. This is really annoying. I turned off syncing with picasa, facebook, google +. Im not sure what else could cause such a slow down.

[Q] Disappearing photos, music, etc

About a week after I got my Edge, I noticed one day using the Samsung file explorer that the camera file had dropped in memory from having gb to mb in there. My heart sank and upon checking yes my photos had disappeared. Thought maybe because I was playing around with roms etc. Weird thing is I used ez file explorer to check and they were still there. So plugged phone into computer to back up to hard drive and next thing, they were gone.
Now I haven't changed anything on my phone for a couple of days, go to play music and sand thing has happened! None of my apps can see the music files except ez file explorer and can only play them from here. I'm worried if I plug into computer they will be gone again.
Any one else had similar issues?? Found a fix?
